Unitary Time Evolution and Vacuum for a Quantum Stable Ghost

We quantize a classically stable system of a harmonic oscillator polynomially coupled to a ghost with negative kinetic energy. We prove that due to an integral of motion with a positive discrete spectrum: i) the Hamiltonian has a pure point spectrum unbounded in both directions, ii) the evolution is manifestly unitary, iii) the vacuum is well-defined, iv) expectation values for squares of canonical variables are bounded. Numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation confirm these results. We argue that the discrete spectrum of the integral of motion enforces stability for extended interactions.

Quantum mechanics with a ghost: Counterexamples to spectral denseness

We quantise integrable point-particle systems with opposite-sign kinetic terms and nontrivial interactions. Using methods from separability theory, we show that previously determined classical stability conditions also imply discrete separated eigenvalue spectra. The resulting energy spectrum is unbounded above and below but not necessarily dense. We establish sufficient conditions for (i) exactly one accumulation point, or (ii) none at all. This dispels the widespread notion that ghostly quantum systems must have a continuous or dense energy spectrum.

Ghostly interactions in (1+1) dimensional classical field theory

We investigate the classical stability of two coupled scalar fields with opposite-sign kinetic terms evolving in 1+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime. In the first part, we characterise unquenched ghostly interactions and present numerical solutions that support the following statements. First, the classical instability is not instantaneous and can even be benign, i.e., free of finite-time singularities. Second, while the classical instability can cascade towards higher frequency excitations, it is not driven by high frequency modes: At fixed amplitude, high-frequency modes are more stable than low-frequency modes. In the second part, we demonstrate that the classical instability can be quenched by mass terms. In particular, we exemplify that heavy high-frequency ghost fields seem to not violate the decoupling theorem and can be integrated out classically. In the third part, we demonstrate how self-interactions can quench the instability, for instance, by postponing its onset to parametrically large times. Extrapolating numerical results at large but finite evolution time to infinite evolution time, we demonstrate that classical fluctuations around trivial and nontrivial field-theory vacua are increasingly long-lived with (i) smaller initial amplitude of fluctuations, (ii) higher initial frequency of fluctuations, (iii) larger masses of the fields, or (iv) weaker interaction coupling. Moreover, our numerical simulations for field-theoretical generalisations of some globally-stable ghostly mechanical models do not feature any instability.

Moduli Axions, Stabilizing Moduli and the Large Field Swampland Conjecture in Heterotic M-Theory

We compute the potential energy for the dilaton, complex structure and Kahler moduli and search of realistic vacua of heterotic M-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We present a protocol for deriving the potential that combines the non-perturbative complex structure, gaugino condensate and worldsheet instanton superpotentials in theories in which the hidden sector contains an anomalous $U(1)$ structure group. The Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation induces inhomogeneous axion transformations for the imaginary components of the dilaton and Kahler modulus. Using this protocol we obtain explicit examples in which potential has a global minimum at negative or zero vacuum density or a metastable minimum with positive vacuum density. In all three cases, the dilaton, Kahler modulus and associated axion moduli are completely stabilized. Finally, we show that, for any of these vacua, the potential energy satisfies the large scalar field Swampland conjecture.

Stable Vacua with Realistic Phenomenology and Cosmology in Heterotic M-theory Satisfying Swampland Conjectures

We recently described a protocol for computing the potential energy in heterotic M-theory for the dilaton, complex structure and Kähler moduli. This included the leading order non-perturbative contributions to the complex structure, gaugino condensation and worldsheet instantons assuming a hidden sector that contains an anomalous U(1) structure group embedded in $E_8$. In this paper, we elucidate, in detail, the mathematical and computational methods required to utilize this protocol. These methods are then applied to a realistic heterotic M-theory model, the $B-L$ MSSM, whose observable sector is consistent with all particle physics requirements. Within this context, it is shown that the dilaton and universal moduli can be completely stabilized at values compatible with every phenomenological and mathematical constraint -- as well as with $Λ$CDM cosmology. We also show that the heterotic M-theory vacua are consistent with all well-supported Swampland conjectures based on considerations of string theory and quantum gravity, and we discuss the implications of dark energy theorems for compactified theories.

Global and Local Stability for Ghosts Coupled to Positive Energy Degrees of Freedom

Negative kinetic energies correspond to ghost degrees of freedom, which are potentially of relevance for cosmology, quantum gravity, and high energy physics. We present a novel wide class of stable mechanical systems where a positive energy degree of freedom interacts with a ghost. These theories have Hamiltonians unbounded from above and from below, are integrable, and contain free functions. We show analytically that their classical motion is bounded for all initial data. Moreover, we derive conditions allowing for Lyapunov stable equilibrium points. A subclass of these stable systems has simple polynomial potentials with stable equilibrium points entirely due to interactions with the ghost. All these findings are fully supported by numerical computations which we also use to gather evidence for stability in various nonintegrable systems.

Ghosts without runaway

We present a simple class of mechanical models where a canonical degree of freedom interacts with another one with a negative kinetic term, i.e. with a ghost. We prove analytically that the classical motion of the system is completely stable for all initial conditions, notwithstanding that the conserved Hamiltonian is unbounded from below and above. This is fully supported by numerical computations. Systems with negative kinetic terms often appear in modern cosmology, quantum gravity and high energy physics and are usually deemed as unstable. Our result demonstrates that for mechanical systems this common lore can be too naive and that living with ghosts can be stable.

Degeneracy, matter coupling, and disformal transformations in scalar-tensor theories

Degenerate scalar-tensor theories of gravity extend general relativity by a single degree of freedom, despite their equations of motion being higher than second order. In some cases, this is a mere consequence of a disformal field redefinition carried out in a non-degenerate theory. More generally, this is made possible by the existence of an additional constraint that removes the would-be ghost. It has been noted that this constraint can be thwarted when the coupling to matter involves time derivatives of the metric, which results in a modification of the canonical momenta of the gravitational sector. In this note we expand on this issue by analyzing the precise ways in which the extra degree of freedom may reappear upon minimal coupling to matter. Specifically, we study examples of matter sectors that lead either to a direct loss of the special constraint or to a failure to generate a pair of secondary constraints. We also discuss the recurrence of the extra degree of freedom using the language of disformal transformations in particular for what concerns "veiled" gravity. On the positive side, we show that the minimal coupling of spinor fields is healthy and does not spoil the additional constraint. We argue that this virtue of spinor fields to preserve the number of degrees of freedom in the presence of higher derivatives is actually very general and can be seen from the level decomposition of Grassmann-valued classical variables.

Domain walls without a potential

We show that domain walls, or kinks, can be constructed in simple scalar theories where the scalar has no potential. These theories belong to a class of k-essence where the Lagrangian vanishes identically when one lets the derivatives of the scalar vanish. The domain walls we construct have positive energy and stable quadratic perturbations. As particular cases, we find families of theories with domain walls and their quadratic perturbations identical to the ones of the canonical Mexican hat or sine-Gordon scalar theories. We show that canonical and non canonical cases are nevertheless distinguishable via higher order perturbations or a careful examination of the energies. In particular, in contrast to the usual case, our walls are local minima of the energy among the field configuration having some fixed topological charge, but not global minima.

A theory for multiple partially massless spin-2 fields

We revisit the problem of building consistent interactions for a multiplet of partially massless spin-2 fields in (anti-)de Sitter space. After rederiving and strengthening the existing no-go result on the impossibility of Yang-Mills type non-abelian deformations of the partially massless gauge algebra, we prove the uniqueness of the cubic interaction vertex and field-dependent gauge transformation that generalize the structures known from single-field analyses and in four spacetime dimensions, where our results also hold. Unlike in the case of one partially massless field, however, we show that for two or more particle species the cubic deformations can be made consistent at the complete non-linear level, albeit at the expense of allowing for negative relative signs between kinetic terms, making our new theory akin to conformal gravity. Our construction thus provides the first example of an interacting theory containing only partially massless fields.

Consistent deformations of free massive field theories in the Stueckelberg formulation

Cohomological techniques within the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) extension of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism have proved invaluable for classifying consistent deformations of gauge theories. In this work we investigate the application of this idea to massive field theories in the Stueckelberg formulation. Starting with a collection of free massive vectors, we show that the cohomological method reproduces the cubic and quartic vertices of massive Yang-Mills theory. In the same way, taking a Fierz-Pauli graviton on a maximally symmetric space as the starting point, we are able to recover the consistent cubic vertices of nonlinear massive gravity. The formalism further sheds light on the characterization of Stueckelberg gauge theories, by demonstrating for instance that the gauge algebra of such models is necessarily Abelian and that they admit a Born-Infeld-like formulation in which the action is simply a combination of the gauge-invariant structures of the free theory.

Classifying Galileon $p$-form theories

We provide a complete classification of all abelian gauge invariant $p$-form theories with equations of motion depending only on the second derivative of the field---the $p$-form analogues of the Galileon scalar field theory. We construct explicitly the nontrivial actions that exist for spacetime dimension $D\leq11$, but our methods are general enough and can be extended to arbitrary $D$. We uncover in particular a new $4$-form Galileon cubic theory in $D\geq8$ dimensions. As a by-product we give a simple proof of the fact that the equations of motion depend on the $p$-form gauge fields only through their field strengths, and show this explicitly for the recently discovered $3$-form Galileon quartic theory.

On p-form theories with gauge invariant second order field equations

We explore field theories of a single p-form with equations of motions of order strictly equal to two and gauge invariance. We give a general method for the classification of such theories which are extensions to the p-forms of the Galileon models for scalars. Our classification scheme allows to compute an upper bound on the number of different such theories depending on p and on the space-time dimension. We are also able to build a non trivial Galileon like theory for a 3-form with gauge invariance and an action which is polynomial into the derivatives of the form. This theory has gauge invariant field equations but an action which is not, like a Chern-Simons theory. Hence the recently discovered no-go theorem stating that there are no non trivial gauge invariant vector Galileons (which we are also able here to confirm with our method) does not extend to other odd p cases.

On horizon structure of bimetric spacetimes

We discuss the structure of horizons in spacetimes with two metrics, with applications to the Vainshtein mechanism and other examples. We show, without using the field equations, that if the two metrics are static, spherically symmetric, nonsingular, and diagonal in a common coordinate system, then a Killing horizon for one must also be a Killing horizon for the other. We then generalize this result to the axisymmetric case. We also show that the surface gravities must agree if the bifurcation surface in one spacetime lies smoothly in the interior of the spacetime of the other metric. These results imply for example that the Vainshtein mechanism of nonlinear massive gravity theories cannot work to recover black holes if the dynamical metric and the non dynamical flat metric are both diagonal. They also explain the global structure of some known solutions of bigravity theories with one diagonal and one nondiagonal metric, in which the bifurcation surface of the Killing field lies in the interior of one spacetime and on the conformal boundary of the other.

From k-essence to generalised Galileons

We determine the most general scalar field theories which have an action that depends on derivatives of order two or less, and have equations of motion that stay second order and lower on flat space-time. We show that those theories can all be obtained from linear combinations of Lagrangians made by multiplying a particular form of the Galileon Lagrangian by an arbitrary scalar function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. We also obtain curved space-time extensions of those theories which have second order field equations for both the metric and the scalar field. This provide the most general extension, under the condition that field equations stay second order, of k-essence, Galileons, k-Mouflage as well as of the kinetically braided scalars. It also gives the most general action for a scalar classicalizer, which has second order field equations. We discuss the relation between our construction and the Euler hierachies of Fairlie et al, showing in particular that Euler hierachies allow one to obtain the most general theory when the latter is shift symmetric. As a simple application of our formalism, we give the covariantized version of the conformal Galileon.

Non linear Fierz-Pauli theory from torsion and bigravity

The non linear aspects of a recently proposed model of massive spin-2 particles with propagating torsion are studied. We obtain a nonlinear equation which reduces at linear order to a generalized Fierz-Pauli equation in any background space-time with or without a vanishing torsion. We contrast those results with properties of a class of bigravity theories in an arbitrary background Einstein manifold. It is known that the non perturbative spectrum of the bigravity model has 8 propagating physical degrees of freedom. This is identical to the physical propagating degrees of freedom of the massive spin-2 torsion model at the linearized order. The obtained non linear version of the Fierz-Pauli field equations, however, contains terms absent in the bigravity case which indicates that the curved space generalization of the unique flat space space Fierz-Pauli equation is not unique. Moreover, in the torsion massive gravity model the Fierz-Pauli field appears as a derivative of fundamental fields. This, however, does not generate any unwanted pole once coupled to some external sources.

A note on the wellposedness of scalar brane world cosmological perturbations

We discuss scalar brane world cosmological perturbations for a 3-brane world in a maximally symmetric 5D bulk. We show that Mukoyama's master equations leads, for adiabatic perturbations of a perfect fluid on the brane and for scalar field matter on the brane, to a well posed problem despite the "non local" aspect of the boundary condition on the brane. We discuss in relation to the wellposedness the way to specify initial data in the bulk.

Supernovae, CMB, and Gravitational Leakage into Extra Dimensions

We discuss observational constraints coming from CMB and type Ia supernovae, for the model of accelerated universe produced by gravitational leakage into extra dimensions. Our fits indicate that the model is currently in agreement with the data. We also give the equations governing the evolution of cosmological perturbations. Future observations will be able to severely constrain the model.
