Logarithmic supertranslations as asymptotic symmetries of gravity at null infinity

Logarithmic supertranslations have been shown recently to be symmetries of the gravitational field at spatial infinity. We extend this work by proving explicitly that they are also symmetries at null infinity. We also show that the logarithmic supertranslation charges match at the ``corner" where spatial infinity and null infinity meet. This fully establishes that the asymptotic symmetry group of gravity in the asymptotically flat context contains the logarithmic supertranslations.

Celestial Symmetries of Black Hole Horizons

We establish a correspondence between the gravitational phase space at null infinity and the subleading phase space near a finite-distance null hypersurface, such as a black hole horizon. Within this framework, we identify the celestial $Lw_{1+\infty}$ symmetries in the subleading phase space at the horizon by constructing their canonical generators and imposing self-duality conditions. This leads to an infinite tower of conserved charges in the absence of radiation, revealing new gravitational observables relevant to black hole physics.

Celestial $Lw_{1+\infty}$ Symmetries and Subleading Phase Space of Null Hypersurfaces

Pursuing our analysis of [1], we study the gravitational solution space around a null hypersurface in the bulk of spacetime, such as a black hole or a cosmological horizon. We discuss the corresponding characteristic initial value problem both in the metric and Newman-Penrose formalisms, and establish an explicit dictionary between the two. This allows us to identify Weyl-covariant structures in the solution space, including hierarchies of recursion relations encoding the flux-balance laws. We then establish a correspondence between the gravitational phase space at null infinity and the subleading phase space around the null hypersurface at finite distance. This connection is naturally formulated within the Newman-Penrose formalism by performing a partially off-shell conformal compactification and identifying the analogue of the Ashtekar-Streubel symplectic structure in the radial expansion near the null hypersurface. Using this framework, we identify the celestial $Lw_{1+\infty}$ symmetries in the subleading phase space at finite distance by constructing their canonical generators and imposing self-duality conditions. This allows us to define a notion of covariant radiation, whose absence gives rise to an infinite tower of conserved charges, revealing physical quantities relevant to observers near black hole or cosmological horizons. As a concrete illustration, we consider the case of the self-dual Taub-NUT black hole.

The symplectic potential for leaky boundaries

Charges associated with gauge symmetries are defined on boundaries of spacetimes. But these constructions typically involve divergent quantities when considering asymptotic boundaries. Different prescriptions exist to address this problem, based on ambiguities in the definition of the symplectic potential. We propose a method well suited to leaky boundaries, which describe spacetimes than can exchange matter or radiation with their environment. The main advantage of this approach is that it relies only on the bulk Lagrangian and it is not tied to a specific choice of boundary conditions. The prescription is applied to four dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity in the partial Bondi gauge. This leads to a finite symplectic potential for unconstrained boundary data and reveals two new corner symplectic pairs associated with the relaxation of the gauge.

Teleparallel gravity at null infinity

Four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes have been central to recent developments in infrared physics. Gravitational waves reaching the asymptotic boundary reveal an infinite-dimensional symmetry group known as the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group. The vacuum structure breaks this symmetry, giving rise to Goldstone modes that play a pivotal role in the analysis of scattering amplitudes. However, these modes must be added to the phase space of the metric formulation. In this work, we explore an alternative formulation of general relativity, teleparallel gravity, which is dynamically equivalent to the standard metric description in the bulk. This framework relies on a tetrad field to encode the gravitational degrees of freedom and a flat connection to represent inertial effects. Leveraging this decomposition, we propose a novel encoding of the Goldstone modes within the flat connection. We examine the implications of this approach in the covariant phase space framework, focusing on the symplectic potential and its connection to the Wald-Zoupas prescription.

(Anti)-de Sitter with leaky boundaries and corners

We construct charges for four-dimensional spacetimes with a non-vanishing cosmological constant, including charges that are not conserved because of a leaky boundary and charges associated with corner terms in the symplectic current. The construction leads to manifestly finite charges for any choice of boundary conditions, and reveals new charges in partial Bondi gauge for an enlarged class of field configurations which are not fully on-shell, including a Weyl charge for conformal boundary conditions. In addition, we generalize the variational principle for AdS$_4$ gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions to a wedge of spacetime where the conformal boundary includes a corner. The boundary data is completely general, with no conditions restricting time dependence or the determinant of the metric. The Ward identities associated with boundary diffeomorphisms are shown to reproduce the evolution equations for the mass and angular momentum of fully on-shell field configurations.

Symmetries of the gravitational scattering in the absence of peeling

The symmetries of the gravitational scattering are intimately tied to the symmetries which preserve asymptotic flatness at null infinity. In Penrose's definition of asymptotic flatness, a central role is played by the notion of asymptotic simplicity and the ensuing peeling behavior which dictates the decay rate of the Weyl tensor. However, there is now accumulating evidence that in a generic gravitational scattering the peeling property is broken, so that the spacetime is not asymptotically-flat in the usual sense. These obstructions to peeling can be traced back to the existence of universal radiative low frequency observables called "tails to the displacement memory". The universality of these tail modes is the statement of the classical logarithmic soft graviton theorem of Sahoo, Saha and Sen. Four-dimensional gravitation scattering therefore exhibits a rich infrared interplay between tail to the memory, loss of peeling, and universal logarithmic soft theorems. In this paper we study the solution space and the asymptotic symmetries for logarithmically-asymptotically-flat spacetimes. These are defined by a polyhomogeneous expansion of the Bondi metric which gives rise to a loss of peeling, and represent the classical arena which can accommodate a generic gravitational scattering containing tails to the memory. We show that while the codimension-two generalized BMS charges are sensitive to the loss of peeling at $\mathcal{I}^+$, the flux is insensitive to the fate of peeling. Due to the tail to the memory, the soft superrotation flux contains a logarithmic divergence whose coefficient is the quantity which is conserved in the scattering by virtue of the logarithmic soft theorem. In our analysis we also exhibit new logarithmic evolution equations and flux-balance laws, whose presence suggests the existence of an infinite tower of subleading logarithmic soft graviton theorems.

Finite Charges from the Bulk Action

Constructing charges in the covariant phase space formalism often leads to formally divergent expressions, even when the fields satisfy physically acceptable fall-off conditions. These expressions can be rendered finite by corner ambiguities in the definition of the presymplectic potential, which in some cases may be motivated by arguments involving boundary Lagrangians. We show that the necessary corner terms are already present in the variation of the bulk action and can be extracted in a straightforward way. Once these corner terms are included in the presymplectic potential, charges derived from an associated codimension-2 form are automatically finite. We illustrate the procedure with examples in two and three dimensions, working in Bondi gauge and obtaining integrable charges. As a by-product, actions are derived for these theories that admit a well-defined variational principle when the fields satisfy boundary conditions on a timelike surface with corners. An interesting feature of our analysis is that the fields are not required to be fully on-shell.

The partial Bondi gauge: Gauge fixings and asymptotic charges

In the companion paper [SciPost Phys. 13, 108 (2022), arXiv:2205.11401 [hep-th]] we have studied the solution space at null infinity for gravity in the partial Bondi gauge. This partial gauge enables to recover as particular cases and among other choices the Bondi-Sachs and Newman-Unti gauges, and to approach the question of the most general boundary conditions and asymptotic charges in gravity. Here we compute and study the asymptotic charges and their algebra in this partial Bondi gauge, by focusing on the flat case with a varying boundary metric $δq_{AB}\neq0$. In addition to the super-translations, super-rotations, and Weyl transformations, we find two extra asymptotic symmetries associated with non-vanishing charges labelled by free functions in the solution space. These new symmetries arise from a weaker definition of the radial coordinate and switch on traces in the transverse metric. We also exhibit complete gauge fixing conditions in which these extra asymptotic symmetries and charges survive. As a byproduct of this calculation we obtain the charges in Newman-Unti gauge, in which one of these extra asymptotic charges is already non-vanishing. We also apply the formula for the charges in the partial Bondi gauge to the computation of the charges for the Kerr spacetime in Bondi coordinates.

Symmetries and Charges in Weyl-Fefferman-Graham Gauge

We investigate the asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional AdS Einstein gravity in the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham gauge, which is a generalization of the Fefferman-Graham gauge inducing a Weyl connection as part of the boundary structure. We show that this gauge arises as a natural intermediary step of the gauge-fixing procedure in the Chern-Simons formulation. We prove that the diffeomorphism required to go to the usual Fefferman-Graham gauge can be charged, and thus its implementation has physical repercussions. We discuss the holographic renormalization and the variational principle offering a new holographic take on this gauge and its charges.

One-loop partition function of gravity with leaky boundary conditions

Leaky boundary conditions in asymptotically AdS spacetimes are relevant to discuss black hole evaporation and the evolution of the Page curve via the island formula. We explore the consequences of leaky boundary conditions on the one-loop partition function of gravity. We focus on JT gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field whose normalizable and non-normalizable modes are both turned on, allowing for leakiness through the AdS boundary. Classically, this yields a flux-balance law relating the scalar news to the time derivative of the mass. Semi-classically, we argue that the usual diffeomorphism-invariant measure is ill-defined, suggesting that the area-non-preserving diffeomorphisms are broken at one loop. We calculate the associated anomaly and its implication on the gravitational Gauss law. Finally, we generalize our arguments to higher dimensions and dS.

The partial Bondi gauge: Further enlarging the asymptotic structure of gravity

We present a detailed analysis of gravity in a partial Bondi gauge, where only the three conditions $g_{rr}=0=g_{rA}$ are fixed. We relax in particular the so-called determinant condition on the transverse metric, which is only assumed to admit a polyhomogeneous radial expansion. This is sufficient in order to build the solution space, which here includes a cosmological constant, time-dependent sources in the boundary metric, logarithmic branches, and an extra trace mode at subleading order in the transverse metric. The evolution equations are studied using the Newman-Penrose formalism in terms of covariant functionals identified from the Weyl scalars, and we build the explicit dictionary between this formalism and the tensorial Einstein equations. This provides in particular a new derivation of the (A)dS mass loss formula. We then study the holographic renormalisation of the symplectic potential, and the transformation laws under residual asymptotic symmetries. The advantage of the partial Bondi gauge is that it allows to contrast and treat in a unified manner the Bondi-Sachs and Newman-Unti gauges, which can each be reached upon imposing a further specific gauge condition. The differential determinant condition leads to the $Λ$-BMSW gauge, while a differential condition on $g_{ur}$ leads to a generalized Newman-Unti gauge. This latter gives access to a new asymptotic symmetry which acts on the asymptotic shear and further extends the $Λ$-BMSW group by an extra abelian radial translation. This generalizes results which we have recently obtained in three dimensions.

Generalized dilaton gravity in 2d

Generalized dilaton gravity in 2d is the most general consistent deformation of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model that maintains local Lorentz invariance. The action is generically not power-counting renormalizable, thus going beyond the class of models typically studied. Nevertheless, all these models are exactly soluble. We focus on a subclass of dilaton scale invariant models. Within this subclass, we identify a 3-parameter family of models that describe black holes asymptoting to AdS2 in the UV and to dS2 in the IR. Since these models could be interesting for holography, we address thermodynamics and boundary issues, including boundary charges, asymptotic symmetries and holographic renormalization.

3d gravity in Bondi-Weyl gauge: charges, corners, and integrability

We introduce a new gauge and solution space for three-dimensional gravity. As its name Bondi-Weyl suggests, it leads to non-trivial Weyl charges, and uses Bondi-like coordinates to allow for an arbitrary cosmological constant and therefore spacetimes which are asymptotically locally (A)dS or flat. We explain how integrability requires a choice of integrable slicing and also the introduction of a corner term. After discussing the holographic renormalization of the action and of the symplectic potential, we show that the charges are finite, symplectic and integrable, yet not conserved. We find four towers of charges forming an algebroid given by $\mathfrak{vir}\oplus\mathfrak{vir}\oplus\text{Heisenberg}$ with three central extensions, where the base space is parametrized by the retarded time. These four charges generate diffeomorphisms of the boundary cylinder, Weyl rescalings of the boundary metric, and radial translations. We perform this study both in metric and triad variables, and use the triad to explain the covariant origin of the corner terms needed for renormalization and integrability.

Conservation and Integrability in Lower-Dimensional Gravity

We address the questions of conservation and integrability of the charges in two and three-dimensional gravity theories at infinity. The analysis is performed in a framework that allows us to treat simultaneously asymptotically locally AdS and asymptotically locally flat spacetimes. In two dimensions, we start from a general class of models that includes JT and CGHS dilaton gravity theories, while in three dimensions, we work in Einstein gravity. In both cases, we construct the phase space and renormalize the divergences arising in the symplectic structure through a holographic renormalization procedure. We show that the charge expressions are generically finite, not conserved but can be made integrable by a field-dependent redefinition of the asymptotic symmetry parameters.

Spacetime structure near generic horizons and soft hair

We explore the spacetime structure near non-extremal horizons in any spacetime dimension greater than two and discover a wealth of novel results: 1. Different boundary conditions are specified by a functional of the dynamical variables, describing inequivalent interactions at the horizon with a thermal bath. 2. The near horizon algebra of a set of boundary conditions, labeled by a parameter $s$, is given by the semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms at the horizon with "spin-$s$ supertranslations". For $s=1$ we obtain the first explicit near horizon realization of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra. 3. For another choice, we find a non-linear extension of the Heisenberg algebra, generalizing recent results in three spacetime dimensions. This algebra allows to recover the aforementioned (linear) ones as composites. 4. These examples allow to equip not only black holes, but also cosmological horizons with soft hair. We also discuss implications of soft hair for black hole thermodynamics and entropy.

Asymptotic Symmetries of Three-Dimensional Black Strings

We determine a consistent phase space for a theory consisting in the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to matter fields (dilaton, one-form, two-form) and containing three-dimensional black strings (the Horne-Horowitz solution and generalizations thereof). The theory at hand is the low energy effective action for the bosonic sector of heterotic string theory. We find a consistent set of boundary conditions whose algebra of asymptotic charges consist in a single Virasoro algebra supplemented by three global $u(1)$ generators. We also discuss the thermodynamics of the zero-mode solutions and point out some peculiar features of this system.

BTZ Black Holes and Flat Space Cosmologies in Higher Derivative Theories

We consider BTZ black holes and flat space cosmologies in generic higher derivative gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. Our goal is to prove the match between the bulk Iyer-Wald entropy and the field theory entropy for various symmetry algebras (CFT$_2$, Warped CFT$_2$, BMS$_3$). We also discuss phase transitions in higher curvature theories, and argue that, in the flat case, there is strictly speaking no phase transition in the grand canonical ensemble.
