On the location of eigenvalues of matrix polynomials

A number $λ\in \mathbb C $ is called an {\it eigenvalue} of the matrix polynomial $P(z)$ if there exists a nonzero vector $x \in \mathbb C^n$ such that $P(λ)x = 0$. Note that each finite eigenvalue of $P(z)$ is a zero of the characteristic polynomial $\det(P(z))$. In this paper we establish some (upper and lower) bounds for eigenvalues of matrix polynomials based on the norm of their coefficient matrices and compare these bounds to those given by N.J. Higham and F. Tisseur, J. Maroulas and P. Psarrakos.

On Wielandt-Mirsky's conjecture for matrix polynomials

In matrix analysis, the \textit{Wielandt-Mirsky conjecture} states that $$ dist(σ(A), σ(B)) \leq \|A-B\|, $$ for any normal matrices $ A, B \in \mathbb C^{n\times n}$ and any operator norm $\|\cdot \|$ on $C^{n\times n}$. Here $dist(σ(A), σ(B))$ denotes the optimal matching distance between the spectra of the matrices $A$ and $B$. It was proved by A.J. Holbrook (1992) that this conjecture is false in general. However it is true for the Frobenius distance and the Frobenius norm (the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality). The main aim of this paper is to study the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality and some weaker versions of the Wielandt-Mirsky conjecture for matrix polynomials.

Handelman's Positivstellensatz for polynomial matrices positive definite on polyhedra

In this paper we give a matrix version of Handelman's Positivstellensatz [1], representing polynomial matrices which are positive definite on convex, compact polyhedra. Moreover, we propose also a procedure to find such a representation. As a corollary of Handelman's theorem, we give a special case of Schmüdgen's Positivstellensatz for polynomial matrices positive definite on convex, compact polyhedra.

A note on optimization with Morse polynomials

In this paper we prove that the gradient ideal of a Morse polynomial is radical. This gives a generic class of polynomials whose gradient ideals are radical. As a consequence we reclaim a previous result that the unconstrained polynomial optimization problem for Morse polynomials has a finite convergence.

On tangent cones at infinity of algebraic varieties

In this paper, we establish the following version at infinity of Whitney's theorem [6, 7]: Geometric and algebraic tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties coincide. The proof of this fact is based on a geometric characterization of geometric tangent cones at infinity and using the global Łojasiewicz inequality with explicit exponents for complex algebraic varieties. We also show that tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties can be computed using Gröbner bases.

Nonnegative Morse polynomial functions and polynomial optimization

In this paper we study the representation of Morse polynomial functions which are nonnegative on a compact basic closed semi-algebraic set in $\mathbb R^n$, and having only finitely many zeros in this set. Following C. Bivià-Ausina, we introduce two classes of non-degenerate polynomials for which the algebraic sets defined by them are compact. As a consequence, we study the representation of nonnegative Morse polynomials on these kinds of non-degenerate algebraic sets. Moreover, we apply these results to study the polynomial optimization problem for Morse polynomial functions.

Some Positivstellensätze for polynomial matrices

In this paper we give a version of Krivine-Stengle's Positivstellensatz, Schweighofer's Positivstellensatz, Scheiderer's local-global principle, Scheiderer's Hessian criterion and Marshall's boundary Hessian conditions for polynomial matrices, i.e. matrices with entries from the ring of polynomials in the variables (x_1,...,x_d) with real coefficients. Moreover, we characterize Archimedean quadratic modules of polynomial matrices, and study the relationship between the compactness of a subset in (\r^{d}) with respect to a subset (\hoa{G}) of polynomial matrices and the Archimedean property of the preordering and the quadratic module generated by (\hoa{G}).

Some remarks on flatness of morphisms over smooth base spaces

In this paper we study flatness of the restriction on some special subgerms (e.g. the reduction and the unmixed part) of the total space of a flat morphism over a smooth base space. We give a relationship between reducedness of the total space and that of the generic fibers of a flat morphism over a reduced Cohen-Macaulay base space. Moreover, we study flatness of the composition of a flat morphism over a smooth base space and the normalization of the total space of that morphism.

Jensen's functional equation on the symmetric group $\bold{S_n}$

Two natural extensions of Jensen's functional equation on the real line are the equations $f(xy)+f(xy^{-1}) = 2f(x)$ and $f(xy)+f(y^{-1}x) = 2f(x)$, where $f$ is a map from a multiplicative group $G$ into an abelian additive group $H$. In a series of papers \cite{Ng1}, \cite{Ng2}, \cite{Ng3}, C. T. Ng has solved these functional equations for the case where $G$ is a free group and the linear group $GL_n(R)$, $R=\z,\r$, a quadratically closed field or a finite field. He has also mentioned, without detailed proof, in the above papers and in \cite{Ng4} that when $G$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ the group of all solutions of these functional equations coincides with the group of all homomorphisms from $(S_n,\cdot)$ to $(H,+)$. The aim of this paper is to give an elementary and direct proof of this fact.

Equinormalizable theory for plane curve singularities with embedded points and the theory of equisingularity

In this paper we give some criteria for a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities to be equinormalizable. The first criterion is based on the $δ$-invariant of a (non-reduced) curve singularity which is introduced by Brücker-Greuel (\cite{BG}). The second criterion is based on the I-equisingularity of a $k$-parametric family ($k\geq 1$) of generically reduced plane curve singularities, which is introduced by Nobile (\cite{No}) for one-parametric families. The equivalence of some kinds of equisingularities of a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities is also studied.
