Object Boundary Guided Semantic Segmentation

Semantic segmentation is critical to image content understanding and object localization. Recent development in fully-convolutional neural network (FCN) has enabled accurate pixel-level labeling. One issue in previous works is that the FCN based method does not exploit the object boundary information to delineate segmentation details since the object boundary label is ignored in the network training. To tackle this problem, we introduce a double branch fully convolutional neural network, which separates the learning of the desirable semantic class labeling with mask-level object proposals guided by relabeled boundaries. This network, called object boundary guided FCN (OBG-FCN), is able to integrate the distinct properties of object shape and class features elegantly in a fully convolutional way with a designed masking architecture. We conduct experiments on the PASCAL VOC segmentation benchmark, and show that the end-to-end trainable OBG-FCN system offers great improvement in optimizing the target semantic segmentation quality.

A Coarse-to-Fine Indoor Layout Estimation (CFILE) Method

The task of estimating the spatial layout of cluttered indoor scenes from a single RGB image is addressed in this work. Existing solutions to this problems largely rely on hand-craft features and vanishing lines, and they often fail in highly cluttered indoor rooms. The proposed coarse-to-fine indoor layout estimation (CFILE) method consists of two stages: 1) coarse layout estimation; and 2) fine layout localization. In the first stage, we adopt a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) to obtain a coarse-scale room layout estimate that is close to the ground truth globally. The proposed FCN considers combines the layout contour property and the surface property so as to provide a robust estimate in the presence of cluttered objects. In the second stage, we formulate an optimization framework that enforces several constraints such as layout contour straightness, surface smoothness and geometric constraints for layout detail refinement. Our proposed system offers the state-of-the-art performance on two commonly used benchmark datasets.

A Two-Stage Shape Retrieval (TSR) Method with Global and Local Features

A robust two-stage shape retrieval (TSR) method is proposed to address the 2D shape retrieval problem. Most state-of-the-art shape retrieval methods are based on local features matching and ranking. Their retrieval performance is not robust since they may retrieve globally dissimilar shapes in high ranks. To overcome this challenge, we decompose the decision process into two stages. In the first irrelevant cluster filtering (ICF) stage, we consider both global and local features and use them to predict the relevance of gallery shapes with respect to the query. Irrelevant shapes are removed from the candidate shape set. After that, a local-features-based matching and ranking (LMR) method follows in the second stage. We apply the proposed TSR system to MPEG-7, Kimia99 and Tari1000 three datasets and show that it outperforms all other existing methods. The robust retrieval performance of the TSR system is demonstrated.

GAL: A Global-Attributes Assisted Labeling System for Outdoor Scenes

An approach that extracts global attributes from outdoor images to facilitate geometric layout labeling is investigated in this work. The proposed Global-attributes Assisted Labeling (GAL) system exploits both local features and global attributes. First, by following a classical method, we use local features to provide initial labels for all super-pixels. Then, we develop a set of techniques to extract global attributes from 2D outdoor images. They include sky lines, ground lines, vanishing lines, etc. Finally, we propose the GAL system that integrates global attributes in the conditional random field (CRF) framework to improve initial labels so as to offer a more robust labeling result. The performance of the proposed GAL system is demonstrated and benchmarked with several state-of-the-art algorithms against a popular outdoor scene layout dataset.

Robust Uncalibrated Stereo Rectification with Constrained Geometric Distortions (USR-CGD)

A novel algorithm for uncalibrated stereo image-pair rectification under the constraint of geometric distortion, called USR-CGD, is presented in this work. Although it is straightforward to define a rectifying transformation (or homography) given the epipolar geometry, many existing algorithms have unwanted geometric distortions as a side effect. To obtain rectified images with reduced geometric distortions while maintaining a small rectification error, we parameterize the homography by considering the influence of various kinds of geometric distortions. Next, we define several geometric measures and incorporate them into a new cost function for parameter optimization. Finally, we propose a constrained adaptive optimization scheme to allow a balanced performance between the rectification error and the geometric error. Extensive experimental results are provided to demonstrate the superb performance of the proposed USR-CGD method, which outperforms existing algorithms by a significant margin.

A ParaBoost Stereoscopic Image Quality Assessment (PBSIQA) System

The problem of stereoscopic image quality assessment, which finds applications in 3D visual content delivery such as 3DTV, is investigated in this work. Specifically, we propose a new ParaBoost (parallel-boosting) stereoscopic image quality assessment (PBSIQA) system. The system consists of two stages. In the first stage, various distortions are classified into a few types, and individual quality scorers targeting at a specific distortion type are developed. These scorers offer complementary performance in face of a database consisting of heterogeneous distortion types. In the second stage, scores from multiple quality scorers are fused to achieve the best overall performance, where the fuser is designed based on the parallel boosting idea borrowed from machine learning. Extensive experimental results are conducted to compare the performance of the proposed PBSIQA system with those of existing stereo image quality assessment (SIQA) metrics. The developed quality metric can serve as an objective function to optimize the performance of a 3D content delivery system.

A GMM-Based Stair Quality Model for Human Perceived JPEG Images

Based on the notion of just noticeable differences (JND), a stair quality function (SQF) was recently proposed to model human perception on JPEG images. Furthermore, a k-means clustering algorithm was adopted to aggregate JND data collected from multiple subjects to generate a single SQF. In this work, we propose a new method to derive the SQF using the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). The newly derived SQF can be interpreted as a way to characterize the mean viewer experience. Furthermore, it has a lower information criterion (BIC) value than the previous one, indicating that it offers a better model. A specific example is given to demonstrate the advantages of the new approach.

Recovering Missing Coefficients in DCT-Transformed Images

A general method for recovering missing DCT coefficients in DCT-transformed images is presented in this work. We model the DCT coefficients recovery problem as an optimization problem and recover all missing DCT coefficients via linear programming. The visual quality of the recovered image gradually decreases as the number of missing DCT coefficients increases. For some images, the quality is surprisingly good even when more than 10 most significant DCT coefficients are missing. When only the DC coefficient is missing, the proposed algorithm outperforms existing methods according to experimental results conducted on 200 test images. The proposed recovery method can be used for cryptanalysis of DCT based selective encryption schemes and other applications.

Collaborative Topic Regression with Social Matrix Factorization for Recommendation Systems

Social network websites, such as Facebook, YouTube, Lastfm etc, have become a popular platform for users to connect with each other and share content or opinions. They provide rich information for us to study the influence of user's social circle in their decision process. In this paper, we are interested in examining the effectiveness of social network information to predict the user's ratings of items. We propose a novel hierarchical Bayesian model which jointly incorporates topic modeling and probabilistic matrix factorization of social networks. A major advantage of our model is to automatically infer useful latent topics and social information as well as their importance to collaborative filtering from the training data. Empirical experiments on two large-scale datasets show that our algorithm provides a more effective recommendation system than the state-of-the art approaches. Our results reveal interesting insight that the social circles have more influence on people's decisions about the usefulness of information (e.g., bookmarking preference on Delicious) than personal taste (e.g., music preference on Lastfm). We also examine and discuss solutions on potential information leak in many recommendation systems that utilize social information.

An Improved DC Recovery Method from AC Coefficients of DCT-Transformed Images

Motivated by the work of Uehara et al. [1], an improved method to recover DC coefficients from AC coefficients of DCT-transformed images is investigated in this work, which finds applications in cryptanalysis of selective multimedia encryption. The proposed under/over-flow rate minimization (FRM) method employs an optimization process to get a statistically more accurate estimation of unknown DC coefficients, thus achieving a better recovery performance. It was shown by experimental results based on 200 test images that the proposed DC recovery method significantly improves the quality of most recovered images in terms of the PSNR values and several state-of-the-art objective image quality assessment (IQA) metrics such as SSIM and MS-SSIM.
