Finite Size Scaling of the Higgs-Yukawa Model near the Gaussian Fixed Point

We study the scaling properties of Higgs-Yukawa models. Using the technique of Finite-Size Scaling, we are able to derive scaling functions that describe the observables of the model in the vicinity of a Gaussian fixed point. A feasibility study of our strategy is performed for the pure scalar theory in the weak-coupling regime. Choosing the on-shell renormalisation scheme gives us an advantage to fit the scaling functions against lattice data with only a small number of fit parameters. These formulae can be used to determine the universality of the observed phase transitions, and thus play an essential role in future investigations of Higgs-Yukawa models, in particular in the strong Yukawa coupling region.

Large mass hierarchies from strongly-coupled dynamics

Besides the Higgs particle discovered in 2012, with mass 125 GeV, recent LHC data show tentative signals for new resonances in diboson as well as diphoton searches at high center-of-mass energies (2 TeV and 750 GeV, respectively). If these signals are confirmed (or other new resonances are discovered at the TeV scale), the large hierarchies between masses of new bosons require a dynamical explanation. Motivated by these tentative signals of new physics, we investigate the theoretical possibility that large hierarchies in the masses of glueballs could arise dynamically in new strongly-coupled gauge theories extending the standard model of particle physics. We study lattice data on non-Abelian gauge theories in the (near-)conformal regime as well as a simple toy model in the context of gauge/gravity dualities. We focus our attention on the ratio $R$ between the mass of the lightest spin-2 and spin-0 resonances, that for technical reasons is a particularly convenient and clean observable to study. For models in which (non-perturbative) large anomalous dimensions arise dynamically, we show indications that this mass ratio can be large, with $R>5$. Moreover, our results suggest that $R$ might be related to universal properties of the IR fixed point. Our findings provide an interesting step towards understanding large mass ratios in the non-perturbative regime of quantum field theories with (near) IR conformal behaviour.

The Yang-Mills gradient flow and SU(3) gauge theory with 12 massless fundamental fermions in a colour-twisted box

We perform the step-scaling investigation of the running coupling constant, using the gradient-flow scheme, in SU(3) gauge theory with twelve massless fermions in the fundamental representation. The Wilson plaquette gauge action and massless unimproved staggered fermions are used in the simulations. Our lattice data are prepared at high accuracy, such that the statistical error for the renormalised coupling, g_GF, is at the subpercentage level. To investigate the reliability of the continuum extrapolation, we employ two different lattice discretisations to obtain g_GF. For our simulation setting, the corresponding gauge-field averaging radius in the gradient flow has to be almost half of the lattice size, in order to have this extrapolation under control. We can determine the renormalisation group evolution of the coupling up to g^2_GF ~ 6, before the onset of the bulk phase structure. In this infrared regime, the running of the coupling is significantly slower than the two-loop perturbative prediction, although we cannot draw definite conclusion regarding possible infrared conformality of this theory. Furthermore, we comment on the issue regarding the continuum extrapolation near an infrared fixed point. In addition to adopting the fit ansatz a'la Symanzik for performing this task, we discuss a possible alternative procedure inspired by properties derived from low-energy scale invariance at strong coupling. Based on this procedure, we propose a finite-size scaling method for the renormalised coupling as a means to search for infrared fixed point. Using this method, it can be shown that the behaviour of the theory around g^2_GF ~ 6 is still not governed by possible infrared conformality.

Lattice study for conformal windows of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories with fundamental fermions

We present our investigation of SU(2) gauge theory with 8 flavours, and SU(3) gauge theory with 12 flavours. For the SU(2) case, at strong bare coupling, $β\lesssim 1.45$, the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirac operator can be described by chiral random matrix theory for the Gaussian symplectic ensemble. Our preliminary result indicates that the chiral phase transition in this theory is of bulk nature. For the SU(3) theory, we use high-precision lattice data to perform the step-scaling study of the coupling, $g_{\rm GF}$, in the Gradient Flow scheme. We carefully examine the reliability of the continuum extrapolation in the analysis, and conclude that the scaling behaviour of this SU(3) theory is not governed by possible infrared conformality at $g_{\rm GF}^{2} \lesssim 6$.

Lattice study of the Higgs-Yukawa model in and beyond the Standard Model

We derive finite-size scaling formulae for four-dimensional Higgs-Yukawa models near the Gaussian fixed point. These formulae will play an essential role in future, detailed investigation of such models. In particular, they can be used to determine the nature of the observed phase transitions, and confirm or rule out the possibility of having non-trivial fixed points in the Higgs-Yukawa models. Our scaling formula for Binder's cumulant is tested against lattice simulations carried out at weak couplings, and good agreement is found. As a separate project, we also present preliminary results from our study of a chirally-invariant Higgs-Yukawa model including a dimension-six operator at finite temperature. Our work provides first indications of first-order temperature-induced phase transitions near the infinite cutoff limit in this model.

A lattice study of a chirally invariant Higgs-Yukawa model including a higher dimensional $Φ^6$-term

We discuss the non-thermal phase structure of a chirally invariant Higgs-Yukawa model on the lattice in the presence of a higher dimensional $Φ^6$-term. For the exploration of the phase diagram we use analytical, lattice perturbative calculations of the constraint effectice potential as well as numerical simulations. We also present first results of the effects of the $Φ^6$-term on the lower Higgs boson mass bounds.

Phase structure and Higgs boson mass in a Higgs-Yukawa model with a dimension-6 operator

We investigate the impact of a $λ_6 φ^6$ term included in a chirally invariant lattice Higgs-Yukawa model. Such a term could emerge from BSM physics at some larger energy scale. We map out the phase structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model with positive $λ_6$ and negative quartic self coupling of the scalar fields. To this end, we evaluate the constraint effective potential in lattice perturbation theory and also determine the magnetization of the model via numerical simulations which allow us to reach also non-perturbative values of the couplings. As a result, we find a complex phase structure with first and second order phase transitions identified through the magnetization. Further we analyze the effect of such a $φ^6$ term on the lower Higgs boson mass bound to see, whether the standard model lower mass bound can be altered.

Phase Structure Study of SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory with 8 Flavors

We present the investigation of the strong bare-coupling regime of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with 8 fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. The simulations are performed with unimproved staggered fermions and the plaquette gauge action. One bulk phase transition is observed through the measurement of the plaquette. The results of cold-start and hot-start simulations, as well as the hysteresis study, indicate the order of this transition can be weakly first order. Using the smeared Polyakov loops, and a method inspired by the constraint effective potential, we study the vacuum structure near the confining-deconfining phase transition. The Dirac operator eigenvalue spectrum is investigated, where further analysis is needed to clarify the properties of the chiral phase structure.

SU(3) gauge theory with 12 flavours in a twisted box

We present preliminary result for the step-scaling study of the coupling constant with the Yang-Mills gradient flow, in the twelve-favour SU(3) gauge theory. In this work, the lattice simulation is performed using unimproved staggered fermions and the Wilson plaquette gauge action, from which the gradient flow is also implemented. Imposing twisted boundary condition a'la t'Hooft and Parisi, our calculation is performed at zero fermion mass. The renormalised coupling constant is extracted via the computation of the energy density. In order to examine the reliability of the continuum extrapolation, we investigate this coupling constant using two different lattice discretisations. Our result shows that in order to control the systematic effects in the continuum extrapolation, it is necessary to implement a large enough gradient-flow time. In the current calculation, the gauge-field averaging radius corresponding to the flow time has to be as large as 40% of the lattice size.

Stabilizing the electroweak vacuum by higher dimensional operators in a Higgs-Yukawa model

The Higgs boson discovery at the LHC with a mass of approximately 126 GeV suggests, that the electroweak vacuum of the standard model may be metastable at very high energies. However, any new physics beyond the standard model can change this picture. We want to address this important question within a lattice Higgs-Yukawa model as the limit of the standard model (SM). In this framework we will probe the effect of a higher dimensional operator for which we take a $(ϕ^{\dagger}ϕ)^3$-term. Such a term could easily originate as a remnant of physics beyond the SM at very large scales. As a first step we investigate the phase diagram of the model including such a $(ϕ^{\dagger}ϕ)^3$ operator. Exploratory results suggest the existence of regions in parameter space where first order transitions turn to second order ones, indicating the existence of a tri-critical line. We will explore the phase structure and the consequences for the stability of the SM, both analytically by investigating the constraint effective potential in lattice perturbation theory, and by studying the system non-perturbatively using lattice simulations.

The phase structure of a chirally-invariant Higgs-Yukawa model

We present new results of our ongoing project on the investigation of the phase structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model at small and large bare Yukawa couplings. The critical exponents of the second order bulk phase transitions of this model are determined from finite-size analyses and compared to the pure O(4)-model to test for triviality and the possibility of having a non-Gaussian fixed point. In addition, we will present a first study of Higgs boson masses and fermion correlation functions.

$Λ_b \to p l^- \barν$ form factors from lattice QCD with static b quarks

We present a lattice QCD calculation of form factors for the decay $Λ_b \to p μ^- \barν$, which is a promising channel for determining the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ at the Large Hadron Collider. In this initial study we work in the limit of static b quarks, where the number of independent form factors reduces to two. We use dynamical domain-wall fermions for the light quarks, and perform the calculation at two different lattice spacings and at multiple values of the light-quark masses in a single large volume. Using our form factor results, we calculate the $Λ_b \to p μ^- \barν$ differential decay rate in the range $14 GeV^2 \leq q^2 \leq q^2_{max}$, and obtain the integral $\int_{14 GeV^2}^{q^2_{max}} [dΓ/dq^2] dq^2 / |V_{ub}|^2 = 15.3 \pm 4.2 ps^{-1}$. Combined with future experimental data, this will give a novel determination of $|V_{ub}|$ with about 15\% theoretical uncertainty. The uncertainty is dominated by the use of the static approximation for the b quark, and can be reduced further by performing the lattice calculation with a more sophisticated heavy-quark action.

Higgs-Yukawa model in chirally-invariant lattice field theory

Non-perturbative numerical lattice studies of the Higgs-Yukawa sector of the standard model with exact chiral symmetry are reviewed. In particular, we discuss bounds on the Higgs boson mass at the standard model top quark mass, and in the presence of heavy fermions. We present a comprehensive study of the phase structure of the theory at weak and very strong values of the Yukawa coupling as well as at non-zero temperature.

Form factors for Lambda_b -> Lambda transitions from lattice QCD

The rare baryonic decays $Λ_b \to Λμ^+ μ^-$ and $Λ_b \to Λγ$ can complement rare $B$ meson decays in constraining models of new physics. In this work, we calculate the relevant $Λ_b \to Λ$ transition form factors at leading order in heavy-quark effective theory using lattice QCD. Our analysis is based on RBC/UKQCD gauge field ensembles with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions, and with lattice spacings of $a\approx 0.11$ fm and $a\approx 0.08$ fm. We compute appropriate ratios of three-point and two-point correlation functions for a wide range of source-sink separations, and extrapolate to infinite separation in order to eliminate excited-state contamination. We then extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and to the physical values of the light-quark masses.

Lambda_b -> Lambda l+ l- form factors and differential branching fraction from lattice QCD

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the $Λ_b \to Λ$ transition form factors that govern the rare baryonic decays $Λ_b \to Λl^+ l^-$ at leading order in heavy-quark effective theory. Our calculations are performed with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions, at two lattice spacings and with pion masses down to 227 MeV. Three-point functions with a wide range of source-sink separations are used to extract the ground-state contributions. The form factors are extrapolated to the physical values of the light-quark masses and to the continuum limit. We use our results to calculate the differential branching fractions for $Λ_b \to Λl^+ l^-$ with $l=e,μ,τ$ within the standard model. We find agreement with a recent CDF measurement of the $Λ_b \to Λμ^+ μ^-$ differential branching fraction.

Conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 fundamental fermions

We study the infrared properties of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to 12 massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. The renormalized running coupling constant is calculated in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme on the lattice. From the step-scaling analysis, we find that the infrared behavior of the theory is governed by a non-trivial fixed point.

Investigation of the phase structure of a chirally-invariant Higgs-Yukawa model

We present new data on our ongoing project on the investigation of the phase structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model at large bare Yukawa couplings. The data presented last year are extended in terms of statistics, the number of bare Yukawa couplings at existing, and new larger volumes. In addition, this study is extended by a finite temperature project at the physical top quark mass m_t =175 GeV and a hypothetical fourth generation top quark with a mass of m_t' =700 GeV .

Lattice study of infrared behaviour in SU(3) gauge theory with twelve massless flavours

We present details of a lattice study of infrared behaviour in SU(3) gauge theory with twelve massless fermions in the fundamental representation. Using the step-scaling method, we compute the coupling constant in this theory over a large range of scale. The renormalisation scheme in this work is defined by the ratio of Polyakov loops in the directions with different boundary conditions. We closely examine systematic effects, and find that they are dominated by errors arising from the continuum extrapolation. Our investigation suggests that SU(3) gauge theory with twelve flavours contains an infrared fixed point.
