Possible coexistence of s-wave and unconventional pairing in Na_xCoO_2-yH2O:a new insight from impurity effects

To shed light on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in Na_xCoO_2-yH_2O, the Mn doping effects are studied. X-ray absorption spectroscopy verifies that the doped Mn impurities occupy the Co sites and are with a valance close to +4. Impurity scattering by Mn is in the unitary limit that, however, does not lead to strong Tc suppression. This absence of the strong impurity effects on T_c is not consistent with the simple picture of a sign-changing order parameter. Coexistence of the s-wave and unconventional order parameters is proposed to reconcile all existing experiments and has been directly observed by the specific heat experiments.

Magnetothermopower and Magnetoresistivity of RuSr2Gd1-xLaxCu2O8 (x=0, 0.1)

We report measurements of magnetothermopower and magnetoresistivity as a function of temperature on RuSr2Gd1-xLaxCu2O8 (x = 0, 0.1). The normal-state thermopower shows a dramatic decrease after applying a magnetic field of 5 T, whereas the resistivity shows only a small change after applying the same field. Our results suggest that RuO2 layers are conducting and the magnetic field induced decrease of the overall thermopower is caused by the decrease of partial thermopower decrease associated with the spin entropy decrease of the carriers in the RuO2 layers.

Transport properties of spiral carbon nanofiber mats containing Pd metal clusters using Pd2(dba)3 as catalyst

We have grown spiral carbon nanofibers containing Pd metal clusters using the Pd2(dba)3 catalyzed decomposition of gaseous acetylene on molecular sieves (AlPO4-5) support. The microstructure and composition of the spiral carbon nanofibers were examined by the powder x-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope. The conductivity of the mat in the temperature range from 14 to 250 K could be described by the form of exp[-(T-1/4)]. The thermopower shows a remarkably linear behavior down to 40 K, reminiscent of some conducting polymers. The sign change of the thermopower suggests there exists more than one type of charge carrier, which could be ascribed to the different types of nanotube with various sizes of radius. The transport behavior of spiral carbon nanofibers containing Pd metal clusters will be discussed in the framework of the heterogeneous model.

A novel route to phase formation of cobalt oxyhydrates using KMnO4 as an oxidizing agent

We have first succeefully synthesized the sodium cobalt oxyhydrate superconductors using KMnO4 as a de-intercalating and oxidizing agent. It is a novel route to form the superconductive phase of NaxCoO2.yH2O without resorting to the commonly used Br2/CH3CN solution. The role of the KMnO4 is to de-intercalate the Na+ from the parent compound Na0.7CoO2 and oxidize the Co ion as a result. The higher molar ratio of KMnO4 relative to the sodium content tends to remove more Na+ from the parent compound and results in a slight expansion of the c-axis in the unit cell. The superconducting transition temperature is 4.6-3.8 K for samples treated by the aqueous KMnO4 solution with the molar ratio of KMnO4 relative to the sodium content in the range of 0.3 and 2.29.

X-ray absorption and optical spectroscopy studies of (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)B$_2$

X-ray absorption spectroscopy and optical reflectance measurements have been carried out to elucidate the evolution of the electronic structure in (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$)B$_{2}$ for $\emph{x}$ = 0.0,0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The important role of B 2$\emph{p}$ $σ$ hole states to superconductivity has been identified, and the decrease in the hole carrier number is $\emph{quantitatively}$ determined. The rate of the decrease in the hole concentration agree well with the theoretical calculations. On the other hand, while the evolution of the electronic structure is gradual through the doping range, $T_c$ suppression is most significant at $\emph{x}$ = 0.4. These results suggest that the superstructure in (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$)B$_{2}$, in addition to the $σ$ holes, can affect the lattice dynamics and contributes to the $T_c$ suppression effect. Other possible explanations like the topological change of the $σ$ band Fermi surface are also discussed.
