Dihadron azimuthal asymmetry and light-quark dipole moments at the Electron-Ion Collider

We propose a novel method to probe light-quark dipole moments by examining the azimuthal asymmetries between a collinear pair of hadrons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off an unpolarized proton target at the Electron-Ion Collider. These asymmetries provide a means to observe transversely polarized quarks, which arise exclusively from the interference between the dipole and the Standard Model interactions, thereby depending linearly on the dipole couplings. We demonstrate that this novel approach can enhance current constraints on light-quark dipole operators by an order of magnitude, free from contamination of other new physics effects. Furthermore, it allows for a simultaneous determination of both the real and imaginary parts of the dipole couplings, offering a new avenue for investigating potential $CP$-violating effects at high energies.

Transverse spin effects and light-quark dipole moments at colliders

In this talk, we present novel methods to investigate light-quark dipole interactions at colliders. Our approach includes: (1) measuring azimuthal asymmetries of a collinear dihadron in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off an unpolarized proton target at the Electron-Ion Collider, and (2) utilizing azimuthal asymmetries of dihadron $(h_1 h_2)$ produced in association with an additional hadron $h^\prime$ at lepton colliders. These asymmetries provide a unique means to observe transversely polarized quarks, which arise from quantum interference and are exclusively sensitive to dipole interactions at the leading power of the new physics scale. Consequently, they exhibit a linear dependence on the dipole couplings, free from contamination by other new physics effects. This approach has the potential to significantly strengthen current constraints by one to two orders of magnitude. By combining all possible channels of $h^\prime$, this novel approach enables the disentanglement of the up- and down-quark dipole moments. Additionally, by controlling the electron's longitudinal polarization and the center-of-mass energy, it separates the contributions mediated by photon and weak boson. Furthermore, it allows for a simultaneous determination of both real and imaginary parts of the dipole couplings, offering a new avenue for investigating potential $CP$-violating effects at high energies.

Strong Coupling Constant Determination from the new CTEQ-TEA Global QCD Analysis

We present a new determination of the strong coupling constant $α_s$ from a global QCD analysis CT25 of parton distribution functions (PDFs) that incorporates high-precision experimental measurements from the Run-2 of the Large Hadron Collider together with a large sample of other measurements over a wide interval of energies. This work addresses two objectives: providing an up-to-date determination of $α_s$ using NNLO calculations and a sensitive nucleon data set within a self-consistent framework, and critically assessing the robustness of the $α_s(M_Z)$ extraction in light of systematic uncertainties as well as correlations of $α_s(M_Z)$ with the functional forms of PDFs and other model parameters. In regard to the uncertainty assessment, we demonstrate that some commonly used criteria, including the dynamical tolerance and Bayesian hierarchical models, may produce significantly different or even unstable estimates for the net $α_s$ uncertainty, and we introduce a concept of \textit{data-clustering safety} that the replicable uncertainty estimates must satisfy. Based on this in-depth examination of the CT25 global hadronic data set using a combination of analysis methods, and after demonstrating a weak correlation between $α_s$ and the functional forms of CT25 PDF parametrizations, we find $α_s(M_Z)=0.1183^{+0.0023}_{-0.0020}$ at the 68\% credibility level.

CT25: Progress toward next-generation PDFs for precision phenomenology at the LHC

We summarize recent progress toward the next generation of CTEQ-TEA parton distribution functions, CT25, based on a global NNLO analysis that incorporates a significant sample of newly included LHC data. We present a baseline fit within the forthcoming full CT25 fit, which includes new Drell-Yan, top-pair, and inclusive-jet data at 8 and 13 TeV, and exhibits non-trivial pulls on the high-$x$ gluon and the flavor structure of the quark sea. In the context of progress toward CT25, we also summarize several recent and ongoing studies of the interplay between phenomenological PDFs and lattice-QCD calculations, simultaneous extractions of $α_s(M_Z)$ within the CT framework, and an expanded program of uncertainty quantification that treats parametrization dependence as an explicit source of epistemic uncertainty, among other issues. We also briefly highlight CT efforts to understand the effects of partial implementations of N$^3$LO corrections into PDF fits, which include benchmark calculations for Higgs and vector-boson processes. We comment on the implications of recent improvements to the CT analysis for precision phenomenology at the LHC and future facilities.

Collins-type fragmentation energy correlator in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering

We initiate a systematic study of fragmentation energy correlators (FECs), which generalize traditional fragmentation functions and encode non-perturbative information about transverse dynamics in parton fragmentation processes. We define boost-invariant, non-perturbative FECs and derive a corresponding collinear factorization formula. A spin decomposition of the FECs is carried out, analogous to that of transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. In this work we focus particularly on the Collins-type quark FEC, which is sensitive to chiral symmetry breaking and characterizes the azimuthal asymmetry in the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark. We perform a next-to-leading-order calculation of the corresponding hard coefficient in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering for the quark non-singlet component, thereby validating the consistency of our theoretical framework.

Flavour asymmetry of antiquarks in nucleon and nucleus

Over the years, comprehensive experiments have shown a fact that the nucleons, such as the proton and neutron, are formed by not only the "valence" up and down quarks which were thought to comprise the nucleons in a simple constituent picture, but also "sea" quarks which can be any other flavour. However, it is still unknown how sea quarks are generated inside the nucleons. Since 1990s, measurements on high energy deuterons (formed by a proton and a neutron) indicated that the anti-down quark contribution was higher than the anti-up quark in the proton, based on the assumptions of the proton-neutron isospin symmetry and a small nuclear effect of the deuteron. Henceforth, sea quarks are considered to be generated via some flavour-asymmetrical mechanisms. Here we report an analysis on a series of new measurements from pure proton interactions which are free from those assumptions, unexpectedly showing that the anti-down quark component is rather consistent with the anti-up quark. It appears to be evidence that the previously observed asymmetry was caused by an unknown nuclear effect in the deuteron, rather than by a difference between antiquarks. We anticipate this work to be an essential new discovery and a motivation for studying nuclear structure, both experimentally and theoretically, at high energy scales, as it now appears fundamentally different from our understanding established in the past.

Transverse spin effects and light-quark dipole moments at lepton colliders

We propose to probe light-quark dipole interactions at lepton colliders using the azimuthal asymmetry of a collinear dihadron pair $(h_1h_2)$ produced in association with another hadron $h'$. This asymmetry, arising from quantum interference in the quark spin space, is exclusively sensitive to dipole interactions at the leading power of the new physics scale and simultaneously probes both the real and imaginary components of the dipole couplings. By combining all possible channels of $h'$, this method allows for disentangling the up and down quark dipole moments and has the potential to significantly strengthen current constraints by one to two orders of magnitude.

Improved Hessian Method in Global Analysis of Parton Distribution Functions

The Hessian method is widely applied in the global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs), which uses a set of orthogonal eigenvectors to give predictions of a physical observable. Its uncertainty is estimated based on the assumption that all physical observables can be approximately expressed as linear functions of the non-perturbative parameters in PDF. In this article, we report an improved Hessian method which takes the non-linear effects into account in the uncertainty estimation. A pseudo global analysis is designed to numerically test the new method. The non-linear uncertainties can significantly enlarge the original linear ones. Such uncertainties can be reduced with high precision data introduced into the global analysis. However, the non-linear effect could still be sizable corresponding to the current precision of the experimental measurements.

A generalized statistical model for fits to parton distributions

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) form an essential part of particle physics calculations. Currently, the most precise predictions for these non-perturbative functions are generated through fits to global data. A problem that several PDF fitting groups encounter is the presence of tension in data sets that appear to pull the fits in different directions. In other words, the best fit depends on the choice of data set. Several methods to capture the uncertainty in PDFs in presence of seemingly inconsistent fits have been proposed and are currently in use. These methods are important to ensure that uncertainty in PDFs are not underestimated. Here we propose a novel method for estimating the uncertainty by introducing a generalized statistical model based on Bayesian Hierarchical models which is implemented via the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). The methodology is inspired by unsupervised machine learning techniques and is closely related to the statistical methods of Ensemble learning and Bayesian model averaging. Using a toy model of PDFs, we demonstrate how the GMM can be used to faithfully reconstruct the likelihood associated with PDF fits, which can in turn be used to accurately determine the uncertainty on PDFs, especially in the presence of tension in the fitted data sets. We further show how this statistical model reduces to the usual chi-squared likelihood function for a consistent data set and provide measures to optimize the number of Gaussians in the GMM.

Relative difference between up and down quark structure of the proton

We presen a novel determination of the down-to-up composition ratio using the forward-backward asymmetry observed in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC. This method offers unique insights into the flavor-specific difference between down and up quarks, which are difficult to isolate in traditional cross-section measurements due to the inherent mixing of contributions from both flavors. In this study, we systematically measure the down-to-up quark ratio over a broad momentum fraction (x) range of 0.01 to 0.1, utilizing the sensitivity of the forward-backward asymmetry to quark-level couplings. Our findings reveal significant deviations in both the value and x-dependence of this ratio compared to predictions from current parton distribution functions (PDFs). These discrepancies highlight potential limitations in existing PDF parameterization and emphasize the importance of flavor-separated measurements for advancing our understanding of proton structure.

Lam-Tung relation breaking in $Z$ boson production as a probe of SMEFT effects

The violation of Lam-Tung relation in the high-$p_T^{\ell\ell}$ region of the Drell-Yan process at the LHC presents a long-standing discrepancy with the standard model prediction at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ accuracy. In this Letter, we employed a model-independent analysis to investigate this phenomenon within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Our findings revealed that the leading contributions from SMEFT to this violation appear at the $1/Λ^4$ order with $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ accuracy in QCD interaction. Notably, we demonstrated that the quadratic effect of dimension-6 dipole operators, associated with the $Z$ boson, dominates the breaking effects induced by various dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators. This provides a possible explanation for the observed discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions at the LHC. Furthermore, the breaking effects could also serve as a powerful tool for constraining $Z$-boson dipole interactions, highlighting their importance among potential sources of new physics in the Drell-Yan process.

Impact of lattice gluon dataset on CTEQ-TEA global PDFs

We investigate the impact of the latest gluon parton results from lattice QCD on the global parton distribution function (PDF) analysis within the CTEQ-TEA framework. The dependence on PDF parameterization is explored using the CT18As variant, incorporating the ATLAS 7 TeV precision $W,Z$ dataset and introducing more flexible parameters to allow strangeness asymmetry at the starting scale $Q_0$. The interplay between lattice input and collider inclusive jet datasets is examined by including the post-CT18 inclusive jet datasets from recent LHC measurements and/or removing all collider inclusive jet datasets. Finally, we demonstrate several phenomenological implications at the LHC, focusing on gluon-gluon parton luminosity and related processes, such as the production of a Higgs-like scalar, top-quark pairs, and their associated production with an additional jet, Higgs, or $Z$ boson.

The impact of LHC precision measurements of inclusive jet and dijet production on the CTEQ-TEA global PDF fit

In this study, we investigate the impact of new LHC inclusive jet and dijet measurements on parton distribution functions (PDFs) that describe the proton structure, with a particular focus on the gluon distribution at large momentum fraction, $x$, and the corresponding partonic luminosities. We assess constraints from these datasets using next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) theoretical predictions, accounting for a range of uncertainties from scale dependence and numerical integration. From the scale choices available for the calculations, our analysis shows that the central predictions for inclusive jet production show a smaller scale dependence than dijet production. We examine the relative constraints on the gluon distribution provided by the inclusive jet and dijet distributions and also explore the phenomenological implications for inclusive $H$, $t\bar{t}$, and $t\bar{t}H$ production at the LHC at 14 TeV.

Progress in top-quark pair production cross section calculations and impact on parton distribution functions of the proton

We discuss the impact of eligible top-quark pair production differential cross-section measurements at the LHC with a collision energy of 13 TeV on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton as well as the impact of approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (aN$^3$LO) QCD corrections combined with next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections on $t\bar t$ observables. We illustrate the effects on the gluon PDF at large $x$ from an optimal baseline selection of data in NNLO global fits, and show comparisons between the theory prediction for $t\bar t$ total and differential cross sections at aN$^3$LO QCD combined with NLO EW and recent measurements from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC.

Determining the $CP$ Property of $ht\bar{t}$ Coupling via a Novel Jet Substructure Observable

Determining the $CP$ property of the Higgs boson is important for a precision test of the Standard Model as well as for the search for new physics. We propose a novel jet substructure observable based on the azimuthal anisotropy in a linearly polarized gluon jet that is produced in association with a Higgs boson at hadron colliders, and demonstrate that it provides a new $CP$-odd observable for determining the $CP$ property of the Higgs-top interaction. We introduce a factorization formalism to define a polarized gluon jet function with the insertion of an infrared-safe azimuthal observable to capture the linear polarization.

High-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections

We present a state-of-the-art prediction for cross sections of neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from nucleon at high neutrino energies, $E_ν$, from 100 GeV to 1000 EeV ($10^{12}$ GeV). Our calculations are based on the latest CT18 NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their associated uncertainties. In order to make predictions for the highest energies, we extrapolate the PDFs to small $x$ according to several procedures and assumptions, thus affecting the uncertainties at ultra-high $E_ν$; we quantify the uncertainties corresponding to these choices. Similarly, we quantify the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear corrections which are required to evaluate neutrino-nuclear cross sections for neutrino telescopes. These results can be applied to currently-running astrophysical neutrino observatories, such as IceCube and KM3NeT, as well as various future experiments which have been proposed.
