Measurement of the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$ with ultracold neutrons

We present a detailed report of a measurement of the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$, the parity-violating angular correlation between the neutron spin and the decay electron momentum, performed with polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN were extracted from a pulsed spallation solid deuterium source and polarized via transport through a 7-T magnetic field. The polarized UCN were then transported through an adiabatic-fast-passage spin-flipper field region, prior to storage in a cylindrical decay volume situated within a 1-T $2 \times 2π$ solenoidal spectrometer. The asymmetry was extracted from measurements of the decay electrons in multiwire proportional chamber and plastic scintillator detector packages located on both ends of the spectrometer. From an analysis of data acquired during runs in 2008 and 2009, we report $A_0 = -0.11966 \pm 0.00089_{-0.00140} ^{+0.00123}$, from which we extract a value for the ratio of the weak axial-vector and vector coupling constants of the nucleon, $λ= g_A/g_V = -1.27590 \pm 0.00239_{-0.00377}^{+0.00331}$. Complete details of the analysis are presented.

Effect of an electric field on superfluid helium scintillation produced by alpha-particle sources

We report a study of the intensity and time dependence of scintillation produced by weak alpha particle sources in superfluid helium in the presence of an electric field (0 - 45 kV/cm) in the temperature range of 0.2 K to 1.1 K at the saturated vapor pressure. Both the prompt and the delayed components of the scintillation exhibit a reduction in intensity with the application of an electric field. The reduction in the intensity of the prompt component is well approximated by a linear dependence on the electric field strength with a reduction of 15% at 45 kV/cm. When analyzed using the Kramers theory of columnar recombination, this electric field dependence leads to the conclusion that roughly 40% of the scintillation results from species formed from atoms originally promoted to excited states and 60% from excimers created by ionization and subsequent recombination with the charges initially having a cylindrical Gaussian distribution about the alpha track of 60 nm radius. The intensity of the delayed component of the scintillation has a stronger dependence on the electric field strength and on temperature. The implications of these data on the mechanisms affecting scintillation in liquid helium are discussed.

Magnetic Neutron Scattering in Solid Oxygen and its Applications to Ultracold Neutron Production

Using neutron scattering, we investigate the static and dynamic structure functions $S(Q,ω)$ of 3 distinct solid phases (using powder average techniques), and characterize the corresponding modes of energy excitation, focusing primarily on the dynamics of spin interaction. With the $S(Q,ω)$ maps, we extract the temperature dependent production rate and upscattering cross section, that are relevant for understanding experimental data on ultracold neutron production in solid oxygen at the saturated vapor pressure.

Understanding Ultracold Neutron Production in Oxygen Solids from Volume and Temperature Dependent Yields

We present experimental data on ultracold neutron (UCN) production in solid oxygen from 5 K to 50 K. The experiment used 3 cells of different dimensions in order to study the excess UCN elastic scattering in s-O$_2$ due to source density non-uniformities. We present a combined $χ^2$ analysis with the aid of Monte-Carlo simulations which contain the detailed physics of UCN transport as well as cold neutron attenuation. The results validate the UCN production and upscattering cross-sections extracted from the dynamic structure function derived from inelastic neutron scattering, and illustrate the role of magnetic scattering in enhancing UCN production in s-O$_2$.

Determination of the Axial-Vector Weak Coupling Constant with Ultracold Neutrons

A precise measurement of the neutron decay $β$-asymmetry $A_0$ has been carried out using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN) from the pulsed spallation UCN source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). Combining data obtained in 2008 and 2009, we report $A_0 = -0.11966 \pm 0.00089_{-0.00140}^{+0.00123}$, from which we determine the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling of the nucleon $g_A/g_V = -1.27590_{-0.00445}^{+0.00409}$.

Coherent Neutron Scattering in Polycrystalline Deuterium and its Implications for Ultracold Neutron Production

This paper presents a calculation of the neutron cross-sections in solid materials (used in practical neutron sources) with a large coherent scattering contribution. In particular, the dynamic structure function S(Q, $ω$) of polycrystalline ortho-D$_2$ is evaluated using a Monte-Carlo calculation that performs an average over scattering angles relative to crystal axes in random orientations. This method uses an analytical dispersion function with force constants derived from neutron scattering data of single crystal D$_2$ in the framework of an axially symmetric force tensor. The resulting two dimensional map of S(Q, $ω$) captures details of the phonon branches as well as the molecular rotations, that can be compared directly to data from inelastic neutron scattering on polycrystalline D$_2$. This high resolution information is used to calculate the absolute cross-sections of production and upscattering loss of ultracold neutron (UCN). The resulting scattering cross-sections are significantly different, especially for UCN upscattering, from the previous predictions using the approach centered on the incoherent approximation.

Ultracold Neutron Production in a Pulsed Neutron Beam Line

We present the results of an Ultracold neutron (UCN) production experiment in a pulsed neutron beam line at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center. The experimental apparatus allows for a comprehensive set of measurements of UCN production as a function of target temperature, incident neutron energy, target volume, and applied magnetic field. However, the low counting statistics of the UCN signal expected can be overwhelmed by the large background associated with the scattering of the primary cold neutron flux that is required for UCN production. We have developed a background subtraction technique that takes advantage of the very different time-of-flight profiles between the UCN and the cold neutrons, in the pulsed beam. Using the unique timing structure, we can reliably extract the UCN signal. Solid ortho-D$_2$ is used to calibrate UCN transmission through the apparatus, which is designed primarily for studies of UCN production in solid O$_2$. In addition to setting the overall detection efficiency in the apparatus, UCN production data using solid D$_2$ suggest that the UCN upscattering cross-section is smaller than previous estimates, indicating the deficiency of the incoherent approximation widely used to estimate inelastic cross-sections in the thermal and cold regimes.

Dressed Spin of Helium-3

We report a measurement of dressed-spin effects of polarized 3He atoms from a cold atomic source traversing a region of constant magnetic field B0 and a transverse oscillatory dressing field Bd cos(omega * t). The observed effects are compared with a numerical simulation using the Bloch equation as well as a calculation based on the dressed-atom formalism. An application of the dressed spin of 3He for a proposed neutron electric dipole moment measurement is also discussed.

Ultra-cold Neutron Production in Anti-ferromagnetic Oxygen Solid

Spin waves, or magnons, in the anti-ferromagnetic $α$ phase of solid oxygen provide a novel mechanism for ultra-cold neutron (UCN) production. Magnons dominate the energy exchange mechanisms for cold neutrons and UCN in solid $α$-oxygen, much in the same way as do phonons in solid deuterium superthermal UCN sources. We present calculations of UCN production and upscattering rates in S-O$_2$. The results indicate that S-O$_2$ is potentially a much more efficient UCN source material than solid deuterium.

Demonstration of a solid deuterium source of ultra-cold neutrons

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN), neutrons with energies low enough to be confined by the Fermi potential in material bottles, are playing an increasing role in measurements of fundamental properties of the neutron. The ability to manipulate UCN with material guides and bottles, magnetic fields, and gravity can lead to experiments with lower systematic errors than have been obtained in experiments with cold neutron beams. The UCN densities provided by existing reactor sources limit these experiments. The promise of much higher densities from solid deuterium sources has led to proposed facilities coupled to both reactor and spallation neutron sources. In this paper we report on the performance of a prototype spallation neutron-driven solid deuterium source. This source produced bottled UCN densities of 145 +/-7 UCN/cm3, about three times greater than the largest bottled UCN densities previously reported. These results indicate that a production UCN source with substantially higher densities should be possible.

Temperature Dependent Neutron Scattering Sections for Polyethylene

This note presents neutron scattering cross sections for polyethylene at 296 K, 77 K and 4 K derived from a new scattering kernel for neutron scattering off of hydrogen in polyethylene. The kernel was developed in ENDF-6 format as a set of S(alpha, beta) tables using the LEAPR module of the NJOY94 code package. The polyethylene density of states (from 0 to sub eV) adopted to derive the new kernel is presented. We compare our calculated room temperature total scattering cross sections and double differential cross sections at 232 meV at various angles with the available experimental data (at room temperature), and then extrapolate the calculations to lower temperatures (77K and 4K). The new temperature dependent scattering kernel gives a good quantitative fit to the available room temperature data and has a temperature dependence that is qualitatively consistent with thermodynamics.

An Apparatus to Control and Monitor the Para-D2 Concentration in a Solid Deuterium, Superthermal Source of Ultra-cold Neutrons

Controlling and measuring the concentration of para-D2 is an essential step toward realizing solid deuterium as an intense ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source. To this end, we implemented an experimental technique to convert para- to ortho-deuterium molecules by flowing D2 gas through a cryogenic cell filled with paramagnetic hydrous ferric oxide granules. This process efficiently reduced the para-D2 concentration from 33.3% to 1.5%. Rotational Raman spectroscopy was applied to measure the residual para-D2 contamination to better than 2 parts in 10^3, and the hydrogen contamination to 1 part in 10^3. We also contrast our optical technique to conventional thermal conductivity measurements of the para-D2 concentration, reporting some of the relevant strengths and weaknesses of our implementation of each technique.

Measurements of ultracold neutron lifetimes in solid deuterium

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium SD2. This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. Superthermal UCN sources offer orders of magnitude improvement in the available densities of UCNs, and are of great importance to fundamental particle-physics experiments such as searches for a static electric dipole moment and lifetime measurements of the free neutron. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time.

UCN Upscattering rates in a molecular deuterium crystal

A calculation of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) upscattering rates in molecular deuterium solids has been carried out, taking into account intra-molecular exictations and phonons. The different moelcular species ortho-D2 (with even rotational quantum number J) and para-D2 (with odd J) exhibit significantly different UCN-phonon annihilation cross-sections. Para- to ortho-D2 conversion, furthermore, couples UCN to an energy bath of excited rotational states without mediating phonons. This anomalous upscattering mechanism restricts the UCN lifetime to 4.6 msec in a normal-D2 solid with 33% para content.
