Relativistic Heavy Ion Excitation of Giant Resonances

Giant resonances and giant resonances built on other giant resonances in nuclei are observed with very large cross sections in relativistic heavy ion collisions. A theoretical effort is underway to understand the reaction mechanism which leads to this process, as well as a better understanding of the microscopic properties of multiphonon states, e.g., their strength, energy centroids, widths and anharmonicities.

Hot Topics in Ultra-Peripheral Collisions

Ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions involve long-ranged electromagnetic interactions at impact parameters too large for hadronic interactions to occur. The nuclear charges are large; with the coherent enhancement, the cross sections are also large. Many types of photonuclear and purely electromagnetic interactions are possible. We present here an introduction to ultra-peripheral collisions, and present four of the most compelling physics topics. This note developed from a discussion at a workshop on ``Electromagnetic Probes of Fundamental Physics,'' in Erice, Italy, Oct. 16-21, 2001.

Two- and Three-photon Fusion in Relativistic Heavy ion Collisions

The production of mesons in ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions is re-analyzed using a projection technique to calculate the amplitudes for the appropriate Feynman diagrams. The virtuality of the exchanged photons is fully accounted for in this approach. In the case of two-photon fusion, it is explicitly shown that the inclusion of nuclear form factors validates the equivalent photon approximation. However, this does not apply to three-photon fusion cross sections. The cross section of J/ψproduction in ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC and LHC are shown to be much smaller than the cross sections for the production of C=even mesons of similar masses.

Multipole Expansion for Relativistic Coulomb Excitation

We derive a general expression for the multipole expansion of the electro-magnetic interaction in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which can be employed in higher-order dynamical calculations of Coulomb excitation. The interaction has diagonal as well as off-diagonal multipole components, associated with the intrinsic and relative coordinates of projectile and target. A simple truncation in the off-diagonal components gives excellent results in first-order perturbation theory for distant collisions and for beam energies up to 200 MeV/nucleon.

Description of Double Giant Dipole Resonance within the Phonon Damping Model

In a recent Letter [1] an overall agreement with the experimental data for the excitation of the single and double giant dipole resonances in relativistic heavy ion collision in 136Xe and 208Pb nuclei has been reported. We point out that this agreement is achieved by a wrong calculation of the DGDR excitation mechanism. We also argue that the agreement with the data for the widths of resonances is achieved by an unrealistically large value of a model parameter. Density dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections

The lowest-order correction of the density dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections is obtained from geometrical considerations of Pauli-blocking effects. As a by-product, it is shown that the medium corrections imply an 1/E energy dependence of the density-dependent term.

Pair production with electron capture in peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions

The production of electron-positron pairs with the capture of the electron in an atomic orbital is investigated for the conditions of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider LHC). Dirac wave functions for the leptons are used, taking corrections to orders of Z.alpha into account. The dependence on the transverse momentum transfer is studied and the accuracy of the equivalent photon approximation is discussed as a function of the nuclear charge.

The stopping of swift protons in matter and its implication for astrophysical fusion reactions

The velocity dependence of the stopping power of swift protons and deuterons in low energy collisions is investigated. At low projectile energies the stopping is mainly due to nuclear stopping and charge exchange of the electron. The second mechanism dominates after Ep >=200 eV. A dynamical treatment of the charge exchange mechanism based on two-center electronic wavefunctions yields very transparent results for the exchange probability. We predict that the stopping cross sections vary approximately as v to the 1.35 power for projectile protons on hydrogen targets in the 1 keV energy region.

Charge exchange in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Elastic charge-exchange in relativistic heavy ion collisions is responsible for the non-disruptive change of the charge state of the nuclei. We show that it can be reliably calculated within the eikonal approximation for the reaction part. The formalism is applied to the charge-pickup cross sections of 158 GeV/nucleon Pb projectiles on several targets. The relative contributions of pion- and rho-exchange are determined, using a single-particle model for the internal structure of the nuclei. The calculated cross sections are non-negligible for heavy targets. It is shown that these cross sections can be useful to obtain information on the Gamow-Teller transition strengths of the nuclei.

A Measurement of the Coulomb Dissociation of 8B at 254 MeV/nucleon and the 8B Solar Neutrino Flux

We have measured the Coulomb dissociation of 8B into 7Be and proton at 254 MeV/nucleon using a large-acceptance focusing spectrometer. The astrophysical S17 factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction at E{c.m.} = 0.25-2.78 MeV is deduced yielding S17(0)=20.6 \pm 1.2 (exp.) \pm 1.0 (theo.) eV-b. This result agrees with the presently adopted zero-energy S17 factor obtained in direct-reaction measurements and with the results of other Coulomb-dissociation studies performed at 46.5 and 51.2 MeV/nucleon.

Microscopic Studies on Two-Phonon Giant Resonances

A new class of giant resonances in nuclei, namely double giant resonances, is discussed. They are giant resonances built on top of other giant resonances. Investigation on their properties, together with similar studies on low-lying two-phonon states, should give an answer on how far the harmonic picture of boson-type excitations holds in the finite fermion systems like atomic nuclei. The main attention in this review is paid to double giant dipole resonances (DGDR) which are observed in relativistic heavy ion collisions with very large cross sections. A great experimental and theoretical effort is underway to understand the reaction mechanism which leads to the excitation of these states in nuclei, as well as the better microscopic understanding of their properties. The Coulomb mechanism of the excitation of single and double giant resonances in heavy ion collision at different projectile energies is discussed in details. A contribution of the nuclear excitation to the total cross section of the reaction is also considered. The Coulomb excitation of double resonances is described within both, the second-order perturbation theory approach and in coupled-channels calculation. The properties of single and double resonances are considered within the phenomenologic harmonic vibrator model and microscopic quasiparticle-RPA approach. For the last we use the Quasiparticle-Phonon Model (QPM) the basic ideas and formalism of which are presented. The QPM predictions of the DGDR properties (energy centroids, widths, strength distributions, anharmonicities and excitation cross sections) are compared to predictions of harmonic vibrator model, results of other microscopic calculations and experimental data available.

Influence of damping on the excitation of the double giant resonance

We study the effect of the spreading widths on the excitation probabilities of the double giant dipole resonance. We solve the coupled-channels equations for the excitation of the giant dipole resonance and the double giant dipole resonance. Taking Pb+Pb collisions as example, we study the resulting effect on the excitation amplitudes, and cross sections as a function of the width of the states and of the bombarding energy.

Bremsstrahlung radiation by a tunneling particle

We study the bremsstrahlung radiation of a tunneling charged particle in a time-dependent picture. In particular, we treat the case of bremsstrahlung during alpha-decay, which has been suggested as a promissing tool to investigate the problem of tunneling times. We show deviations of the numerical results from the semiclassical estimates. A standard assumption of a preformed particle inside the well leads to sharp high-frequency lines in the bremsstrahlung emission. These lines correspond to "quantum beats" of the internal part of the wavefunction during tunneling arising from the interference of the neighboring resonances in the well.

Isospin structure of one- and two-phonon GDR excitations

Isospin is included in the description of Coulomb excitation of multiple giant isovector dipole resonances. In the excitation of even-even nuclei, a relevant portion of the excitation strength is shown to be associated with 1+ two-phonon states, which tends to be hindered or completely supressed in calculations in which the isospin degree of freedom is not considered. We find that the excitation cross sections is strongly dependent on the ground state isospin.

A Computer Program for Relativistic Multiple Coulomb and Nuclear Excitation

A computer program is presented by which one may calculate the multiple electric dipole, electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole Coulomb excitation with relativistic heavy ions. The program applies to an arbitrary nucleus, specified by the spins and energies of the levels and by all E1, E2 and M1 matrix elements. Nuclear excitation is calculated optionally for monopole, dipole and quadrupole excitations and needs inputs of optical potentials. For given bombarding conditions, the differential cross sections and statistical tensors (useful to calculate gamma-ray angular distribution functions) are computed.
