Zero Temperature, Degenerate Fermion Stars

We study a zero temperature, degenerate, fermion gas with fermions of rest mass $m$, that only interacts with itself, gravitationally. We describe a self-consistent novel approach to the formation of a degenerate, quantum mechanical, star. In this approach, the fermions occupy the energy levels that are determined by the self consistent gravitational interactions, according to the Pauli exclusion principle. Then the size of the highest occupied level determines the radius of the star. In the Newtonian gravitational limit, the fermions feel a potential corresponding to a simple harmonic well that smoothly attaches in the exterior to the usual $1/r$ Newtonian gravitational potential. We find analytically, solutions for stars with any radius and mass, parametrized by $m$ and $N_s$, the total number of fermions. In the Newtonian limit, we easily find that we can construct a star that is more compact than the Buchdahl bound and indeed can even be smaller than the Schwarzschild radius. Clearly, such cases are outside of the purview of the Newtonian limit. Therefore we expand our analysis to fermions in the general relativistic context, interacting gravitationally with a metric. We consider the metric corresponding to the interior Schwarzschild solution smoothly connecting to the usual exterior Schwarzschild metric. Treating matter semi-classically, we recover the Buchdahl bound in a completely independent analysis. We briefly discuss classical stability of the Newtonian solution, and its relation to Newtonian polytropic fluids.

Limits on the Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics from geomagnetic data

Lorentz-symmetry violation may be described via the CPT-odd, dimension-3, Carroll-Field-Jackiw term, which couples the electromagnetic fields to a constant 4-vector $k_{\rm AF}$ selecting a preferred direction in spacetime. We solve the field equations using the Green's method for a static point-like magnetic dipole and find the $k_{\rm AF}$-dependent corrections to the standard dipolar magnetic field that strongly dominates the near-Earth magnetic field. Given the very good agreement between current models and ground- and satellite-based geomagnetic data, our strongest constraints on the components of $k_{\rm AF}$ in the Sun-centered frame read $|(k_{\rm AF})_Z| \lesssim 4 \times 10^{-25} \, {\rm GeV}$ for $|(k_{\rm AF})_X|, |(k_{\rm AF})_Y| \lesssim 10^{-24} \, {\rm GeV}$ at the two-sigma level. This represents an improvement of about four orders of magnitude over earlier bounds based on other geophysical phenomena.

Experimental signatures of Kalb-Ramond-like particles

We analyse phenomenological signatures of Kalb-Ramond-like particles, described by an antisymmetric rank-2 tensor, when coupled to fermionic matter. The latter is modelled by a tensor current coupled directly to the Kalb-Ramond field or by a pseudovector current coupled to the rank-1 dual of the field-strength tensor. We obtain limits on the coupling constants to fermions and mass of the Kalb-Ramond-like particles by investigating their impact on the hyperfine splittings of hydrogen, the tree-level unitarity of the $S$ matrix for $e^- + e^+ \rightarrow \ell^- + \ell^+$ scattering with $\ell \neq e$ and the differential cross section for Bhabha scattering. Assuming that the couplings to fermions are independent of the fermion species, the strongest 95\%-CL bounds we find are from LEP data at $\sqrt{s} = 136.23$~GeV, namely $g_{\rm PV}/Λ\lesssim 6.3 \times 10^{-13} \, {\rm eV}^{-1}$ and $g_{\rm T} \lesssim 1.3 \times 10^{-12} \left( m/{\rm eV} \right)$, both for $m \ll \sqrt{s}$ (here $Λ$ is a characteristic energy scale). These limits can be improved in upcoming lepton colliders due to enhanced precision, as well as higher energies.

Bounds on the photon mass via the Shapiro effect in the solar system

We study the effects of a finite mass for the photon on its propagation in a weak gravitational field. In particular, we analyse the gravitational time delay, also known as the Shapiro effect. We work in isotropic coordinates in the weak-field limit and find that the mass-dependent corrections enhance the gravitational time delay. Doppler-tracking data from the Cassini mission allow us to set an upper bound on the photon mass, namely $m_γ< 4.9 \times 10^{-7} \, {\rm eV/c^2}$ at $95\%$ CL. We also discuss next-generation solar-system tests of general relativity that could improve this upper limit, potentially by a factor of ten. Though not competitive with the currently best limits, our bound is at the ballpark of earlier ones based on the gravitational bending of light by the Sun.

Uniformly accelerated quantum counting detector in Minkowski and Fulling vacuum states

In this work we discuss the process of measurements by a detector in an uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, interacting linearly with a massive scalar field. The detector model for field quanta is a point-like system with a ground state and a continuum of unbounded states. We employ the Glauber theory of photodetection. In an uniformly accelerated reference frame, the detector, interacting with the field prepared in an arbitrary state of the Rindler Fock space, is excited only by absorption processes. For the uniformly accelerated detector prepared in the ground state, we evaluate the transition probability rate in three important situations. In the first one the field is prepared in an arbitrary state of $n$-Rindler quanta, then we consider a thermal Rindler state at a given temperature $β^{-1}$, and finally the case in which the state of the field is taken to be the Minkowski vacuum. The well-known result that the latter excitation rates are equal is recovered. Accelerated or inertial observer interpretations of the measurements performed by the accelerated detector is presented. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of the detector in a frame which is inertial in the remote past but in the far future becomes uniformly accelerated. For the massless case, we obtain that the transition probability rate of the detector in the far future is tantamount to the analogous quantity for the detector at rest in a non-inertial reference frame interacting with the field prepared in an usual thermal state.

Efficient algebraic solution for a time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator

Using operator ordering techniques based on BCH-like relations of the su(1,1) Lie algebra and a time-splitting approach,we present an alternative method of solving the dynamics of a time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator for any initial state. We find an iterative analytical solution given by simple recurrence relations that are very well suited for numerical calculations. We use our solution to reproduce and analyse some results from literature in order to prove the usefulness of the method and, based on these references, we discuss efficiency in squeezing, when comparing the parametric resonance modulation and the Janszky-Adam scheme.

New BCH-like relations of the su(1, 1), su(2) and so(2, 1) Lie algebras

In this work we demonstrate new BCH-like relations involving the generators of the su(1, 1), su(2) and so(2, 1) Lie algebras. We use our results to obtain in a straightforward way the composition of an arbitrary number of elements of the corresponding Lie groups. In order to make a self-consistent check of our results, as a first application we recover the non-trivial composition law of two arbitrary squeezing operators. As a second application, we show how our results can be used to compute the time evolution operator of physical systems described by time-dependent hamiltonians given by linear combinations of the generators of the aforementioned Lie algebras.

A time-dependent harmonic oscillator with two frequency jumps: an exact algebraic solution

We consider a harmonic oscillator (HO) with a time dependent frequency which undergoes two successive abrupt changes. By assumption, the HO starts in its fundamental state with frequency ω_{0}, then, at t = 0, its frequency suddenly increases to ω_{1} and, after a finite time interval τ, it comes back to its original value ω_{0}. Contrary to what one could naively think, this problem is a quite non-trivial one. Using algebraic methods we obtain its exact analytical solution and show that at any time t > 0 the HO is in a squeezed state. We compute explicitly the corresponding squeezing parameter (SP) relative to the initial state at an arbitrary instant and show that, surprisingly, it exhibits oscillations after the first frequency jump (from ω_{0} to ω_{1}), remaining constant after the second jump (from ω_{1} back to ω_{0}). We also compute the time evolution of the variance of a quadrature. Last, but not least, we calculate the vacuum (fundamental state) persistence probability amplitude of the HO, as well as its transition probability amplitude for any excited state.

Multiplicative Noise in Euclidean Schwarzschild Manifold

We discuss a $λφ^{4}+ρφ^{6}$ scalar field model defined in the Euclidean section of the Schwarzschild solution of the Einstein equations in the presence of multiplicative noise. The multiplicative random noise is a model for fluctuations of the Hawking temperature. We adopt the standard procedure of averaging the noise dependent generating functional of connected correlation functions of the model. The dominant contribution to this quantity is represented by a series of the moments of the generating functional of correlation functions of the system. Positive and negative effective coupling constants appear in these integer moments. Fluctuations in the Hawking temperature are able to generate first-order phase transitions. Using the Gaussian approximation, we compute $\langleφ^{2}\rangle$ for arbitrary values of the strength of the noise. Due to the presence of the multiplicative noise, we show that $\langleφ^{2}\rangle$ near the horizon must be written as a series of the the renormalized two-point correlation functions associated to a free scalar field in Euclidean Rindler manifold.

Disordered Bose-Einstein condensate in hard walls trap

We discuss the effects of quenched disorder in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a hard walls trap. Starting from the disordered Gross-Pitaevskii functional, we obtain a representation for the quenched free energy as a series of integer moments of the partition function. Positive and negative disorder-dependent effective coupling constants appear in the integer moments. Going beyond the mean-field approximation, we compute the static two-point correlation functions at first-order in the positive effective coupling constants. We obtain the combined contributions of effects due to boundary conditions and disorder in this weakly disordered condensate. The ground state renormalized density profile of the condensate is presented. We also discuss the appearance of metastable and true ground states for strong disorder, when the effective coupling constants become negative.

Disordered $λφ^{4}+ρφ^{6}$ Landau-Ginzburg model

We discuss a disordered $λφ^{4}+ρφ^{6}$ Landau-Ginzburg model defined in a d-dimensional space. First we adopt the standard procedure of averaging the disorder dependent free energy of the model. The dominant contribution to this quantity is represented by a series of the replica partition functions of the system. Next, using the replica symmetry ansatz in the saddle-point equations, we prove that the average free energy represents a system with multiple ground states with different order parameters. For low temperatures we show the presence of metastable equilibrium states for some replica fields for a range of values of the physical parameters. Finally, going beyond the mean-field approximation, the one-loop renormalization of this model is performed, in the leading order replica partition function.

Entanglement dynamics in random media

We study how the entanglement dynamics between two-level atoms is impacted by random fluctuations of the light cone. In our model the two-atom system is envisaged as an open system coupled with an electromagnetic field in the vacuum state. We employ the quantum master equation in the Born-Markov approximation in order to describe the completely positive time evolution of the atomic system. We restrict our investigations to the situation in which the atoms are coupled individually to two spatially separated cavities, one of which displaying the emergence of light-cone fluctuations. In such a disordered cavity, we assume that the coefficients of the Klein-Gordon equation are random functions of the spatial coordinates. The disordered medium is modeled by a centered, stationary and Gaussian process. We demonstrate that disorder has the effect of slowing down the entanglement decay. We conjecture that in a strong disorder environment the mean life of entangled states can be enhanced in such a way as to almost completely suppress quantum nonlocal decoherence.

Bubble nucleation in disordered Landau-Ginzburg model

In this paper we investigate bubble nucleation in a disordered Landau-Ginzburg model. First we adopt the standard procedure to average over the disordered free energy. This quantity is represented as a series of the replica partition functions of the system. Using the saddle-point equations in each replica partition function, we discuss the presence of a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. The leading term of the series is given by a large-N Euclidean replica field theory. Next, we consider finite temperature effects. Below some critical temperature, there are N real instantons-like solutions in the model. The transition from the false to the true vacuum for each replica field is given by the nucleation of a bubble of the true vacuum. In order to describe these irreversible processes of multiple nucleation, going beyond the diluted instanton approximation, an effective model is constructed, with one single mode of a bosonic field interacting with a reservoir of N identical two-level systems.

The Fermi problem in disordered systems

We revisit the Fermi two-atoms problem in the framework of disordered systems. In our model we consider a two-qubits system linearly coupled with a quantum massless scalar field. We analyze the energy transfer between the qubits under different experimental perspectives. In addition, we assume that the coefficients of the Klein-Gordon equation are random functions of the spatial coordinates. The disordered medium is modeled by a centered, stationary and Gaussian process. We demonstrate that the classical notion of causality emerges only in the wave zone in the presence of random fluctuations of the light cone. Possible repercussions are discussed.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in replica field theory

In this paper we discuss a disordered $d$-dimensional Euclidean $λφ^{4}$ model. The dominant contribution to the average free energy of this system is written as a series of the replica partition functions of the model. In each replica partition function, using the saddle-point equations and imposing the replica symmetric ansatz, we show the presence of a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism in the disordered model. Moreover, the leading replica partition function must be described by a large-$N$ Euclidean replica field theory. We discuss finite temperature effects considering periodic boundary condition in Euclidean time and also using the Landau-Ginzburg approach. In the low temperature regime we prove the existence of $N$ instantons in the model.

Lorentz invariance violation and simultaneous emission of electromagnetic and gravitational waves

In this work, we compute some phenomenological bounds for the electromagnetic and massive gravitational high-derivative extensions supposing that it is possible to have an astrophysical process that generates simultaneously gravitational and electromagnetic waves. We present Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) higher-order derivative models, following the Myers-Pospelov approach, to electrodynamics and massive gravitational waves. We compute the corrected equation of motion of these models, their dispersion relations and the velocities. The LIV parameters for the gravitational and electromagnetic sectors, $ξ_{g}$ and $ξ_γ$, respectively, were also obtained for three different approaches: luminal photons, time delay of flight and the difference of graviton and photon velocities. These LIV parameters depend on the mass scales where the LIV-terms become relevant, $M$ for the electromagnetic sector and $M_{1}$ for the gravitational one. We obtain, using the values for $M$ and $M_{1}$ found in the literature, that $ξ_{g}\sim10^{-2}$, which is expected to be phenomenologically relevant and $ξ_γ\sim10^{3}$, which cannot be suitable for an effective LIV theory. However, we show that $ξ_γ$ can be interesting in a phenomenological point of view if $M\gg M_{1}$. Finally the relation between the variation of the velocities of the photon and the graviton in relation to the speed of light was calculated and resulted in $Δv_{g}/Δv_γ\lesssim1.82\times 10^{-3}$.

Lifshitz-scaling to Lorentz-violating high derivative operator and gamma-ray busts

In this work we have used a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling to rewrite a Lorentz-violating higher-order derivative electrodynamics controlled by a background four-vector $n_μ$. The photon propagator was obtained and we have analyzed the dispersion relation and the observational results of gamma-ray burst (GRB) experiments were used. The limits of the critical exponent were discussed in the light of the GRB data and the physical implications were compared with the current GRB-Lorentz-invariance-violation literature. We show that the bound for the Lorentz-violating coupling for dimension-six operators, obtained from a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling, is eight orders of magnitude better than the result found without considering a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling, also this bound is nearby one, which is expected to be relevant phenomenologically.

Three-dimensional Lorentz-violating action

We demonstrate the generation of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons-like Lorentz-breaking ``mixed" quadratic action via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of vector and scalar fields to the spinor field and study some features of the scalar QED with such a term. We show that the same term emerges through a nonpertubative method, namely the Julia-Toulouse approach of condensation of charges and defects.
