Testing Lorentz- and CPT-invariance with ultracold neutrons

In this paper we investigate, within the standard model extension framework, the influence of Lorentz- and CPT-violating terms on gravitational quantum states of ultracold neutrons. Using a semiclassical wave packet, we derive the effective nonrelativistic Hamiltonian which describes the neutrons vertical motion by averaging the contributions from the perpendicular coordinates to the free falling axis. We compute the physical implications of the Lorentz- and CPT-violating terms on the spectra. The comparison of our results with those obtained in the GRANIT experiment leads to an upper bound for the symmetries-violation $c_{μν} ^{n}$ coefficients. We find that ultracold neutrons are sensitive to the $a _{i} ^{n}$ and $e _{i} ^{n}$ coefficients, which thus far are unbounded by experiments in the neutron sector. We propose two additional problems involving ultracold neutrons which could be relevant for improving our current bounds; namely, gravity-resonance-spectroscopy and neutron whispering gallery wave.

Cosmic-ray fermion decay through tau-antitau emission with Lorentz violation

We study CPT and Lorentz violation in the tau-lepton sector of the Standard Model in the context of the Standard-Model Extension, described by a coefficient which is thus far unbounded by experiment. We show that any non-zero value of this coefficient implies that, for sufficiently large energies, standard-model fermions become unstable against decay due to the emission of a pair of tau-antitau leptons. We calculate the induced fermion energy-loss rate and we deduce the first limit on the Lorentz- and CPT-violating coefficient.

Three charges on a plane in a magnetic field: Special trajectories

As a generalization and extension of JMP 54 (2013) 022901, the classical dynamics of three non-relativistic Coulomb charges $(e_1, m_1)$, $(e_2, m_2)$ and $(e_3, m_3)$ on the plane placed in a constant magnetic field perpendicular to the plane is considered. Special trajectories for which the distances between the charges remain unchanged are presented and their corresponding integrals of motion are indicated. For these special trajectories the number of integrals of motion is larger than the dimension of the configuration space and hence they can be called \emph{particularly superintegrable}. Three physically relevant cases are analyzed in detail, namely that of three electrons, a neutral system and a Helium-like system. The $n$-body case is discussed as well.

Extended Nambu Models: their relation to gauge theories

Yang-Mills theories supplemented by an additional coordinate constraint, which is solved and substituted in the original Lagrangian, provide examples of the so called Nambu models, in the case where such constraints arise from spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. Some explicit calculations have shown that, after additional conditions are imposed, Nambu models are capable of reproducing the original gauge theories, thus making Lorentz violation unobservable and allowing the interpretation of the corresponding massless gauge bosons as the Goldstone bosons arising from the spontaneous symmetry breaking. A natural question posed by this approach in the realm of gauge theories is to determine under which conditions the recovery of an arbitrary gauge theory from the corresponding Nambu model, defined by a general constraint over the coordinates, becomes possible. We refer to these theories as extended Nambu models (ENM) and emphasize the fact that the {defining coordinate} constraint is not treated as a standard gauge fixing term. At this level, the mechanism for generating the constraint is irrelevant and the case of spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking is taken only as a motivation, which naturally bring this problem under consideration. Using a non-perturbative Hamiltonian analysis we prove that the ENM yields the original gauge theory after we demand current conservation for all time, together with the imposition of the Gauss laws constraints as initial conditions upon the dynamics of the ENM. The Nambu models yielding electrodynamics, Yang Mills theories and linearized gravity are particular examples of our general approach.

On the equivalence between bumblebee models and electrodynamics in a non-linear gauge

Bumblebee models are effective field theories describing a vector field with a nonzero vacuum expectation value that spontaneously breaks Lorentz invariance. They provide an alternative way of exploring the similarities between theories with spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking and gauge theories. The equivalence between bumblebee models with suitable conditions and standard electrodynamics in a non-linear gauge $A_μA^μ-b^2=0$ is taken for granted; however, this point is very subtle and has not yet been fully addressed. The main goal of this paper is to fill in this gap. More precisely, here we study the relation between a bumblebee model, with a smooth potential of the form $V(B _μ) = V (B _μ B ^μ - b ^{2})$, and standard electrodynamics in the non-linear gauge $A _μ A ^μ - b ^{2} = 0$, both at the classical and quantum levels. Using the Dirac's method we show that after introducing Dirac brackets with suitable initial conditions, the classical dynamics of the bumblebee model corresponds to that of standard electrodynamics in the aforementioned non-linear gauge. In the quantum case we demonstrate that perturbative calculations of Feynman amplitudes to any physical process in each model are indistinguishable. To do this, we show that the Feynman rules and propagators of standard electrodynamics in the non-linear gauge and those describing the bumblebee model are the same.

Local effects of the quantum vacuum in Lorentz-violating electrodynamics

The Casimir effect is one of the most remarkable consequences of the non-zero vacuum energy predicted by quantum field theory. In this paper we use a local approach to study the Lorentz violation effects of the minimal standard model extension on the Casimir force between two parallel conducting plates in the vacuum. Using a perturbative method similar to that used for obtaining the Born series for the scattering amplitudes in quantum mechanics, we compute, at leading order in the Lorentz-violating coefficients, the relevant Green's function which satisfies given boundary conditions. The standard point-splitting technique allow us to express the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor in terms of the Green's function. We discuss its structure in the region between the plates. We compute the renormalized vacuum stress, which is obtained as the difference between the vacuum stress in the presence of the plates and that of the vacuum. The Casimir force is evaluated in an analytical fashion by two methods: by differentiating the renormalized global energy density and by computing the normal-normal component of the renormalized vacuum stress. We compute the local Casimir energy, which is found to diverge as approaching the plates, and we demonstrate that it does not contribute to the observable force.

Casimir effect between ponderable media as modeled by the standard model extension

The CPT-even sector of the standard model extension amounts to extending Maxwell electrodynamics by a gauge invariant term of the form $- \frac{1}{4} (k _{F}) _{αβμν} F ^{αβ} F ^{μν}$, where the Lorentz-violating (LV) background tensor $(k _{F}) _{αβμν}$ possesses the symmetries of the Riemann tensor. The electrodynamics in ponderable media is still described by Maxwell equations in matter with modified constitutive relations which depend on the coefficients for Lorentz violation. We study the effects of this theory on the Casimir force between two semi-infinite ponderable media. The Fresnel coefficients characterizing the vacuum-medium interface are derived, and with the help of these, we compute the Casimir energy density. At leading-order in the LV coefficients, the Casimir energy density is numerically evaluated and successfully compared with the standard result. We also found a variety of intriguing effects, such as a non-trivial Kerr effect and the Casimir effect between two phases of the electromagnetic vacuum. We consider a bubble of Lorentz-symmetric (Maxwell) vacuum embedded in the infinite Lorentz-violating vacuum, and we calculate the Casimir energy at leading order, which in this case is quadratic in the LV coefficients. The Casimir force can be positive, zero, or negative, depending on the relative strengths between the LV coefficients.

Emergence of Yang Mills theory from the Non-Abelian Nambu Model

The equivalence between the Non-Abelian Nambu model (NANM) and Yang Mills theory is proved, after demanding the Gauss laws at some initial time to the first one. Thereby, the Lorentz violation encoded into the constraint that defines the NANM is physically unobservable. As result, the Goldstone bosons in the NANM arising from the spontaneous symmetry breaking can be identified as the standard gauge fields.

Photons emerging as Goldstone bosons from spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking: The Abelian Nambu model

After imposing current conservation together with the Gauss law as initial conditions on the Abelian Nambu model, we prove that the resulting theory is equivalent to standard QED in the non-linear gauge $\left(A_{μ}A^{μ}-n^{2}M^{2}\right)=0$, to all orders in perturbation theory. We show this by writing both models in terms of the same variables, which produce identical Feynman rules for the interactions and propagators. A crucial point is to verify that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts arising from the gauge fixing procedure in the QED sector decouple to all orders. We verify this decoupling by following a method like that employed in Yang-Mills theories when investigating the behavior of axial gauges. The equivalence between the two theories supports the idea that gauge particles can be envisaged as the Goldstone bosons originating from spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking.

Conditions for the emergence of gauge bosons from spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking

The emergence of gauge particles (e.g., photons and gravitons) as Goldstone bosons arising from spontaneous symmetry breaking is an interesting hypothesis which would provide a dynamical setting for the gauge principle. We investigate this proposal in the framework of a general $% SO(N)$ non-abelian Nambu model (NANM), effectively providing spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking in terms of the corresponding Goldstone bosons. Using a non-perturbative Hamiltonian analysis, we prove that the $SO(N)$ Yang--Mills theory is equivalent to the corresponding NANM, after current conservation together with the Gauss laws are imposed as initial conditions for the latter. This equivalence is independent of any gauge fixing in the YM theory. A substantial conceptual and practical improvement in the analysis arises by choosing a particular parametrization that solves the non-linear constraint defining the NANM. This choice allows us to show that the relation between the NANM canonical variables and the corresponding ones of the YM theory, $A_{i}^{a}$ and $E^{bj}$, is given by a canonical transformation. In terms of the latter variables, the NANM Hamiltonian has the same form as the YM Hamiltonian, except that the Gauss laws do not arise as first class constraints. The dynamics of the NANM further guarantees that it is sufficient to impose them only as initial conditions, in order to recover the full equivalence. It is interesting to observe that this particular parametrization exhibits the NANM as a regular theory, thus providing a substantial simplification in the calculations.

The Goldstone Theorem in non-linear electrodynamics

We construct a non-linear electrodynamics arising from the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking triggered by a non-zero vacuum expectation value of the electromagnetic field strength, instead of the electromagnetic potential. The expansion of the corresponding action in terms of the physical photon excitations is naturally written in terms of generalized permeabilities, in a manner similar to when the polarization is expanded in terms of the susceptibilities when studying non-linear effects in standard optics. The new version of the Goldstone theorem is investigated and implies that the lowest order permeability, been the analogous of the mass matrix in the standard case, has zero modes. These are interpreted as the corresponding Goldstone modes of the model and they are explicitly constructed for one of the two choices of vacua that the theory admits. Further iterations of the method employed to obtain such theorem yield relationships among the generalized permeabilities. Some preliminary results regarding the splitting of the two degrees of freedom of the model into Goldstone and non-Goldstone modes are presented.
