Low-$x$ parton densities accounting for absorptive effects and exclusive $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ data from the LHC

Based on the combined Deep-Inelastic Scattering (DIS) data from HERA and the exclusive $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ cross sections measured at the LHC, we investigate the role of absorptive corrections on the low-$x$ behaviour of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at low and moderate scales. Using $\texttt{xFitter}$, we study the impact of these data and of non-linear evolution on PDFs at next-to-leading order (NLO) and through the NNLO$^*$ method introduced in a previous work. Finally, we determine the effective size of proton hot spots within this framework and discuss the implications of our results for future global PDF determinations.

Physics with high-luminosity proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC

The physics case for the operation of high-luminosity proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions during Run 3 and 4 at the LHC is reviewed. The collection of $\mathcal{O}$(1-10 pb$^{-1}$) of proton-lead ($p$Pb) collisions at the LHC will provide unique physics opportunities in a broad range of topics including proton and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs and nPDFs), generalised parton distributions (GPDs), transverse momentum dependent PDFs (TMDs), low-$x$ QCD and parton saturation, hadron spectroscopy, baseline studies for quark-gluon plasma and parton collectivity, double and triple parton scatterings (DPS/TPS), photon-photon collisions, and physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM); which are not otherwise as clearly accessible by exploiting data from any other colliding system at the LHC. This report summarises the accelerator aspects of high-luminosity $pA$ operation at the LHC, as well as each of the physics topics outlined above, including the relevant experimental measurements that motivate -- much -- larger $pA$ datasets.

A method to include exclusive heavy vector-meson production data at small $x$ in global parton analyses

We propose a method which allows the inclusion of exclusive heavy vector-meson production data at low $x$ in future global parton analyses. As an example we perform a study within xFitter to determine the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) at next-to-leading order (NLO) at moderate-to-low $x$ using the measurements of exclusive $J/ψ$ production in ep and pp collisions from HERA and LHC. We further study the constraints from the corresponding $Υ$ production process. We finish by discussing the possible effects at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) through incorporation of a K factor for the exclusive heavy vector-meson coefficient function at NLO.

Exclusive vector-quarkonium photoproduction at NLO in alpha_s in collinear factorisation with evolution of the generalised parton distributions and high-energy resummation

We perform the first complete one-loop study of exclusive photoproduction of vector quarkonia off protons in Collinear Factorisation (CF) including the scale evolution of the Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). We confirm the perturbative instability of the cross section at high photon-proton-collision energies (W_gamma+p) at Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s and solve this issue by resumming higher-order QCD corrections, which are enhanced by a logarithm of the parton energies, using High-Energy Factorisation (HEF) in the Doubly-Logarithmic Approximation (DLA) matched to CF. Our NLO CF + DLA HEF results are in agreement with the latest HERA data, show a smaller sensitivity to the factorisation and renormalisation scales compared to Born-order results. Quark-induced channels via interference with gluon ones are found to contribute at most 20% of the cross section for W_gamma+p > 100 GeV. Our results also show that such exclusive cross sections cannot be accurately obtained from the square of usual Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and clearly illustrate the importance of quarkonium exclusive photoproduction to advance our understanding of the 3D content of the nucleon in terms of gluons. Our work provides an important step towards a correct interpretation of present and future experimental data collected at HERA, the EIC, the LHC and future experiments.

Exclusive heavy vector meson photoproduction on nuclei in NLO perturbative QCD

We make predictions for the cross section of coherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction in Pb-Pb and O-O ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC as a function of the $J/ψ$ rapidity $y$ in the framework of collinear factorization and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD. We quantify the strong scale dependence and significant uncertainties due to nuclear PDFs and show that our approach provides a reasonable description of the LHC data on coherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction in Pb-Pb UPCs. We demonstrate that these uncertainties are reduced by approximately a factor of 10 in the scaled ratio of the O-O and Pb-Pb UPC cross sections. Our analysis indicates the dominance of the quark contribution to the UPC cross section at central rapidities, which affects the interpretation of the UPC data.

Exclusive $J/ψ$ production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions to NLO pQCD

We present the first NLO pQCD study of coherent exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions (UPCs) at the LHC. Taking the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in their forward limit, as parton distribution functions (PDFs), we quantify the NLO contributions in the rapidity-differential cross section, show that the real part of the amplitude must not be neglected, study the gluon and quark contributions, chart the scale-choice and PDF uncertainties, and compare the NLO results with LHC and HERA data. We show that the scale dependence is significant but a scale choice can be found with which we reproduce the 2.76 and 5.02 TeV UPC data. In particular, we show that the process is clearly more sensitive to the nuclear quark PDFs than thought before.

Exclusive production of heavy quarkonia as a probe of the low x and low scale gluon PDF

We discuss the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction process, as measured recently at LHCb, as a means of constraining and ultimately determining the low $x$ and low $Q$ gluon PDF. The scale dependence of the theoretical prediction for this process is shown to be systematically improved via a taming of the known $\bar{\text{MS}}$ result, this amounts to resumming logarithmically enhanced small-$x$ terms and implementing a small-$Q$ power correction. The cross section level predictions allow the behaviour of the gluon PDF in the low $(x, Q)$ domain to be determined.
