Minimalist Neural Networks training for phase classification in diluted-Ising models

In this article, we explore the potential of artificial neural networks, which are trained using an exceptionally simplified catalog of ideal configurations encompassing both order and disorder. We explore the generalisation power of these networks to classify phases in complex models that are far from the simplified training context. As a paradigmatic case, we analyse the order-disorder transition of the diluted Ising model on several two-dimensional crystalline lattices, which does not have an exact solution and presents challenges for most of the available analytical and numerical techniques. Quantitative agreement is obtained in the determination of transition temperatures and percolation densities, with comparatively much more expensive methods. These findings highlight the potential of minimalist training in neural networks to describe complex phenomena and have implications beyond condensed matter physics.

A theoretical model for tellurite-sulfates Na$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$ and K$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$

A theoretical model for two new tellurite-sulfates, namely Na$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$ and K$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$ (OH)$_4$ is determined to be compatible with ab-initio calculations. The results obtained in this work show that some previous speculations in the literature about the couplings are correct, obtaining a model with a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings. We use a combination of numerical techniques to study the magnetic properties of the model. Our numerical calculations based on the density-matrix renormalization group method reveal that the system presents Ising-like magnetization plateaux at rational values of the saturation magnetization.

An effective field theory approach for the $S = 3/2$ bilayer honeycomb antiferromagnet

The spin-3/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the bilayer honeycomb lattice is a minimal model to describe the magnetic behavior of Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$). We study this model with frustrating inter-layer second-neighbor couplings, taking into account quantum and thermal fluctuations. We use a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states to describe the low energy physics of the model. We show that for a particular point in the parameter space, close to the experimental estimated couplings, a continuum classical degeneracy is lifted by both quantum and thermal fluctuations, and a collinear state is then selected by an order by disorder mechanism. Our results provide a global perspective in the understanding of the experimental observations.

Exploring neural network training strategies to determine phase transitions in frustrated magnetic models

The transfer learning of a neural network is one of its most outstanding aspects and has given supervised learning with neural networks a prominent place in data science. Here we explore this feature in the context of strongly interacting many-body systems. Through case studies, we test the potential of this deep learning technique to detect phases and their transitions in frustrated spin systems, using fully-connected and convolutional neural networks. In addition, we explore a recently-introduced technique, which is at the middle point of supervised and unsupervised learning. It consists in evaluating the performance of a neural network that has been deliberately "confused" during its training. To properly demonstrate the capability of the "confusion" and transfer learning techniques, we apply them to a paradigmatic model of frustrated magnetism in two dimensions, to determine its phase diagram and compare it with high-performance Monte Carlo simulations.

Current jumps in flat band ladders with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Localized magnons states, due to flat bands in the spectrum, is an intensely studied phenomenon and can be found in many frustrated magnets of different spatial dimensionality. The presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions may change radically the behavior in such systems. In this context, we study a paradigmatic example of a one-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet, the sawtooth chain in the presence of DM interactions. Using both path integrals methods and numerical Density Matrix Renormalization Group, we revisit the physics of localized magnons and determine the consequences of the DM interaction on the ground state. We have studied the spin current behavior, finding three different regimes. First, a Luttinger-liquid regime where the spin current shows a step behavior as a function of parameter $D$, at a low magnetic field. Increasing the magnetic field, the system is in the Meissner phase at the $m = 1/2$ plateau, where the spin current is proportional to the DM parameter. Finally, further increasing the magnetic field and for finite $D$ there is a small stiffness regime where the spin current shows, at fixed magnetization, a jump to large values at $D = 0$, a phenomenon also due to the flat band.

Phase diagram study of a two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet via unsupervised machine learning

We apply unsupervised learning techniques to classify the different phases of the $J_1-J_2$ antiferromagnetic Ising model on the honeycomb lattice. We construct the phase diagram of the system using convolutional autoencoders. These neural networks can detect phase transitions in the system via `anomaly detection', without the need for any label or a priori knowledge of the phases. We present different ways of training these autoencoders and we evaluate them to discriminate between distinct magnetic phases. In this process, we highlight the case of high temperature or even random training data. Finally, we analyze the capability of the autoencoder to detect the ground state degeneracy through the reconstruction error.

Magnon crystals and magnetic phases in a Kagomé-stripe antiferromagnet

In this work we analyze the magnetization properties of an antiferromagnetic Kagomé stripe lattice, motivated by the recent synthesis of materials exhibiting this structure. By employing a variety of techniques that include numerical methods as Density Matrix Renormalization Group and Monte Carlo simulations, as well as analytical techniques, as perturbative low energy effective models and exact solutions, we characterize the magnetization process and magnetic phase diagram of a Kagomé stripe lattice. The model captures a variety of behaviors present in the two dimensional Kagomé lattice, which are described here by analytical models and numerically corroborated. In addition to the characterization of semiclassical intermediate plateaus, it is worth noting the determination of an exact magnon crystal phase which breaks the underlying symmetry of the lattice. This magnon crystal phase generalizes previous findings and according to our knowledge is reported here for the first time.

Optimizing configurations for determining the magnetic model based on ab-initio calculations

In this paper, it is presented a novel strategy to optimize the determination of magnetic couplings by using ab-initio calculations of the energy. This approach allows determining efficiently, in terms of a proposed effective magnetic spin model, an optimal set of magnetic configurations to be simulated by DFT methods. Moreover, a procedure to estimate the values of the coupling constants and their error bounds from the estimated energies is proposed. This method, based on Monte Carlo sampling, takes into account the accuracy of the ab - initio simulations. A strategy to refine models reusing previously computed configuration energies is also presented. We apply the method to determine a magnetic model for the recently synthesized material Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$). Finally, an open source software that implements and automatizes the whole process is presented.

Inducing critical phenomena in spin chains through sparse alternating fields

We analyze the phase diagram of the exact ground state (GS) of spin-$s$ chains with ferromagnetic $XXZ$ couplings under $n$-alternating field configurations, i.e, sparse alternating fields having nodes at $n-1$ contiguous sites. It is shown that such systems can exhibit a non-trivial magnetic behavior, which can differ significantly from that of the standard ($n=1$) alternating case and enable mechanisms for controlling their magnetic and entanglement properties. The boundary in field space of the fully aligned phase can be determined analytically $\forall\,n$, and shows that it becomes reachable only above a threshold value of the coupling anisotropy $J_z/J$, which depends on $n$ but is independent of the system size. Below this value the maximum attainable magnetization becomes much smaller. We then show that the GS can exhibit significant magnetization plateaus, persistent for large systems, at which the magnetization per site $m$ obeys the quantization rule $2n(s-m)=integer$, consistent with the Oshikawa, Yamanaka and Affleck (OYA) criterion. We also identify the emergence of field induced spin polymerization, which explains the presence of such plateaus. Entanglement and field induced frustration effects are also analyzed.

Nematic quantum phases in the bilayer honeycomb antiferromagnet

The spin$-1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb bilayer lattice is shown to display a rich variety of semiclassical and genuinely quantum phases, controlled by the interplay between intralayer frustration and interlayer exchange. Employing a complementary set of techniques, comprising spin rotationally invariant Schwinger boson mean field theory, bond operators, and series expansions we unveil the quantum phase diagram, analyzing low-energy excitations and order parameters. By virtue of Schwinger bosons we scan the complete range of exchange parameters, covering both long range ordered as well as quantum disordered ground states and reveal the existence of an extended, frustration induced lattice nematic phase in a range of intermediate exchange unexplored so far.

Magnetization process in a frustrated plaquette dimerized ladder

The magnetic phase diagram of a plaquette dimerized antiferromagnetic system is studied by using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. For the strongly frustrated regime, series expansions and bond operators techniques are employed to analyze zero magnetization plateau, whereas low energy effective models are used to study the complete magnetization process. The interplay between frustration and dimerization gives rise to a rich plateaus structure that is captured by effective models and corroborated by numerical density matrix renormalization group simulations, in particular the emergence of intermediate plateaus at M = 1/4 and 3/4 of saturation in the magnetization curve.

Dimerized ground states in spin-S frustrated systems

We study a family of frustrated anti-ferromagnetic spin-$S$ systems with a fully dimerized ground state. This state can be exactly obtained without the need to include any additional three-body interaction in the model. The simplest members of the family can be used as a building block to generate more complex geometries like spin tubes with a fully dimerized ground state. After present some numerical results about the phase diagram of these systems, we show that the ground state is robust against the inclusion of weak disorder in the couplings as well as several kinds of perturbations, allowing to study some other interesting models as a perturbative expansion of the exact one. A discussion on how to determine the dimerization region in terms of quantum information estimators is also presented. Finally, we explore the relation of these results with a the case of the a 4-leg spin tube which recently was proposed as the model for the description of the compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4$D$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$, delimiting the region of the parameter space where this model presents dimerization in its ground state.

Phase diagram study of a dimerized spin-S zig-zag ladder

The phase diagram of a frustrated spin-$S$ zig-zag ladder is studied through different numerical and analytical methods. We show that for arbitrary $S$, there is a family of Hamiltonians for which a fully-dimerized state is an exact ground state, being the Majumdar-Ghosh point a particular member of the family. We show that the system presents a transition between a dimerized phase to a Néel-like phase for $S=1/2$, and spiral phases can appear for large $S$. The phase diagram is characterized by means of a generalization of the usual Mean Field Approximation (MFA). The novelty in the present implementation is to consider the strongest coupled sites as the unit cell. The gap and the excitation spectrum is analyzed through the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). Also, a perturbative treatment to obtain the critical points is discussed. Comparisons of the results with numerical methods like DMRG are also presented.

Self consistent study of the quantum phases in a frustrated antiferromagnet on the bilayer honeycomb lattice

We study the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice. The ground-state energy and spin gap are calculated, using different bosonic representations at mean field level and numerical calculations, to explore different sectors of the phase diagram. In particular we make use of a bond operator formalism and series expansion calculations to study the extent of dimer inter-layer phase. On the other hand we use the Schwinger boson method and exact diagonalization on small systems to analyze the evolution of on-layer phases. In this case we specifically observe a phase that presents a spin gap and short range Neel correlations that survives even in the presence of non-zero next-nearest-neighbor interaction and inter-layer coupling.

Diagnosing order by disorder in quantum spin systems

In this paper we study the frustrated J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg model on the square lattice for J2 > 2J1, in a magnetic field. In this regime the classical system is known to have a degenerate manifold of lowest energy configurations, where standard thermal order by disorder occurs. In order to study its quantum version we use a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states. We show that the classical degeneracy in the plane transverse to the magnetic field is lifted by quantum fluctuations. Collinear states are then selected, in a similar pattern to that set by thermal order by disorder, leaving a Z2 degeneracy. A careful analysis reveals a purely quantum mechanical effect given by the tunneling between the two minima selected by fluctuations. The effective description contains two planar (XY -like) fields conjugate to the total magnetization and the difference of the two sublattice magnetizations. Disorder in either or both of these fields produces the locking of their conjugate observables. Furthermore, within this scenario we argue that the quantum state is close to a product state.

Quantum phases in the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice

We use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to study the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice. Using the Schwinger boson description of the spin operators followed by a mean field decoupling, the magnetic phase diagram is studied as a function of the frustration coupling $J_{2}$ and the interlayer coupling $J_{\bot}$. The presence of both magnetically ordered and disordered phases is investigated by means of the evaluation of ground-state energy, spin gap, local magnetization and spin-spin correlations. We observe a phase with a spin gap and short range Néel correlations that survives for non-zero next-nearest-neighbor interaction and interlayer coupling. Furthermore, we detect signatures of a reentrant behavior in the melting of Néel phase and symmetry restoring when the system undergoes a transition from an on-layer nematic valence bond crystal phase to an interlayer valence bond crystal phase. We complement our work with exact diagonalization on small clusters and dimer-series expansion calculations, together with a linear spin wave approach to study the phase diagram as a function of the spin $S$, the frustration and the interlayer couplings.

Exotic disordered phases in the quantum $J_1-J_2$ model on the honeycomb lattice

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated quantum $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice using a mean field approach in terms of the Schwinger boson representation of the spin operators. We present results for the ground-state energy, local magnetization, energy gap and spin-spin correlations. The system shows magnetic long range order for $0\leq J_{2}/J_{1}\lesssim 0.2075$ (Néel) and $0.398\lesssim J_{2}/J_{1}\leq 0.5$ (spiral). In the intermediate region, we find two magnetically disordered phases: a gapped spin liquid phase which shows short-range Néel correlations $(0.2075 \lesssim J_{2}/J_{1} \lesssim 0.3732)$, and a lattice nematic phase $(0.3732 \lesssim J_{2}/J_{1}\lesssim 0.398)$, which is magnetically disordered but breaks lattice rotational symmetry. The errors in the values of the phase boundaries which are implicit in the number of significant figures quoted, correspond purely to the error in the extrapolation of our finite-size results to the thermodynamic limit.

Statistics of holes and nature of superfluid phases in Quantum dimer models

Quantum Dimer Models (QDM) arise as low energy effective models for frustrated magnets. Some of these models have proven successful in generating a scenario for exotic spin liquid phases with deconfined spinons. Doping, i.e. the introduction of mobile holes, has been considered within the QDM framework and partially studied. A fundamental issue is the possible existence of a superconducting phase in such systems and its properties. For this purpose, the question of the statistics of the mobile holes (or "holons") shall be addressed first. Such issues are studied in details in this paper for generic doped QDM defined on the most common two-dimensional lattices (square, triangular, honeycomb, kagome,...) and involving general resonant loops. We prove a general "statistical transmutation" symmetry of such doped QDM by using composite operators of dimers and holes. This exact transformation enables to define duality equivalence classes (or families) of doped QDM, and provides the analytic framework to analyze dynamical statistical transmutations. We discuss various possible superconducting phases of the system. In particular, the possibility of an exotic superconducting phase originating from the condensation of (bosonic) charge-e holons is examined. A numerical evidence of such a superconducting phase is presented in the case of the triangular lattice, by introducing a novel gauge-invariant holon Green's function. We also make the connection with a Bose-Hubbard model on the kagome lattice which gives rise, as an effective model in the limit of strong interactions, to a doped QDM on the triangular lattice.
