Dynamics and stability of Bose-Einstein solitons in tilted optical lattices

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates realize sensitive matter-wave interferometers. We investigate the dynamics and stability of bright-soliton wave packets in one-dimensional tilted optical lattices with a modulated mean-field interaction $g(t)$. By means of a time-reversal argument, we prove the stability of Bloch oscillations of breathing solitons that would be quasistatically unstable. Floquet theory shows that these breathing solitons can be more stable against certain experimental perturbations than rigid solitons or even non-interacting wave packets.

Stable Bloch oscillations of cold atoms with time-dependent interaction

We investigate Bloch oscillations of interacting cold atoms in a mean-field framework. In general, atom-atom interaction causes dephasing and destroys Bloch oscillations. Here, we show that Bloch oscillations are persistent if the interaction is modulated harmonically with suitable frequency and phase. For other modulations, Bloch oscillations are rapidly damped. We explain this behavior in terms of collective coordinates whose Hamiltonian dynamics permits to predict a whole family of stable solutions. In order to describe also the unstable cases, we carry out a stability analysis for Bogoliubov excitations. Using Floquet theory, we are able to predict the unstable modes as well as their growth rate, found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Quantum Diffusion of Matter Waves in 2D Speckle Potentials

This paper investigates quantum diffusion of matter waves in two-dimensional random potentials, focussing on expanding Bose-Einstein condensates in spatially correlated optical speckle potentials. Special care is taken to describe the effect of dephasing, finite system size, and an initial momentum distribution. We derive general expressions for the interference-renormalized diffusion constant, the disorder-averaged probability density distribution, the variance of the expanding atomic cloud, and the localized fraction of atoms. These quantities are studied in detail for the special case of an inverted-parabola momentum distribution as obtained from an expanding condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime. Lastly, we derive quantitative criteria for the unambiguous observation of localization effects in a possible 2D experiment.

Coherent Matter Wave Transport in Speckle Potentials

This article studies multiple scattering of matter waves by a disordered optical potential in two and in three dimensions. We calculate fundamental transport quantities such as the scattering mean free path $\ell_s$, the Boltzmann transport mean free path $\elltrb$, and the Boltzmann diffusion constant $D_B$, using a diagrammatic Green functions approach. Coherent multiple scattering induces interference corrections known as weak localization which entail a reduced diffusion constant. We derive the corresponding expressions for matter wave transport in an correlated speckle potential and provide the relevant parameter values for a possible experimental study of this coherent transport regime, including the critical crossover to the regime of strong or Anderson localization.

Localization of Matter Waves in 2D-Disordered Optical Potentials

We consider ultracold atoms in 2D-disordered optical potentials and calculate microscopic quantities characterizing matter wave quantum transport in the non-interacting regime. We derive the diffusion constant as function of all relevant microscopic parameters and show that coherent multiple scattering induces significant weak localization effects. In particular, we find that even the strong localization regime is accessible with current experimental techniques and calculate the corresponding localization length.

Mesoscopic scattering of spin s particles

Quantum effects in weakly disordered systems are governed by the properties of the elementary interaction between propagating particles and impurities. Long range mesoscopic effects due to multiple scattering are derived by iterating the single scattering vertex, which has to be appropriately diagonalized. In the present contribution, we present a systematic and detailed diagonalisation of the diffuson and cooperon vertices responsible for weak localisation effects. We obtain general expressions for eigenvalues and projectors onto eigenmodes, for any spin and arbitrary elementary interaction with impurities. This description provides a common frame for a unified theory of mesoscopic spin physics for electrons, photons, and other quantum particles. We treat in detail the case of spin-flip scattering of electrons by freely orientable magnetic impurities and briefly review the case of photon scattering from degenerate dipole transitions in cold atomic gases.

Weak localisation of light by atoms with quantum internal structure

The interference contrast observed in coherent backscattering by cold atoms is drastically reduced with respect to classical disordered media. We study the impact of the degeneracy of the resonant atomic dipole transition on multiple scattering of polarised photons. An analytical treatment allows to derive the diffusion coefficient and depolarisation times for the average light intensity, and dephasing times for the weak localisation corrections. The calculated CBS signals reproduce the experimental results.

Multiple scattering of light by atoms with internal degeneracy

An analytical microscopic theory for the resonant multiple scattering of light by cold atoms with arbitrary internal degeneracy is presented. It permits to calculate the average amplitude and the average intensity for one-photon states of the full transverse electromagnetic field in a dilute medium of unpolarized atoms. Special emphasis is laid upon an analysis in terms of irreducible representations of the rotation group. It allows to sum explicitly the ladder and maximally crossed diagrams, giving the average intensity in the Boltzmann approximation and the interference corrections responsible for weak localization and coherent backscattering. The exact decomposition into field modes shows that the atomic internal degeneracy contributes to the depolarization of the average intensity and suppresses the interference corrections. Static as well as dynamic quantities like the transport velocity, diffusion constants and relaxation times for all field modes and all atomic transitions are derived.

Hanle effect in coherent backscattering

We study the shape of the coherent backscattering (CBS) cone obtained when resonant light illuminates a thick cloud of laser-cooled rubidium atoms in presence of a homogenous magnetic field. We observe new magnetic field-dependent anisotropies in the CBS signal. We show that the observed behavior is due to the modification of the atomic radiation pattern by the magnetic field (Hanle effect in the excited state).

Coherent Backscattering of Light by Cold Atoms

Light propagating in an optically thick sample experiences multiple scattering. It is now known that interferences alter this propagation, leading to an enhanced backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization of light in such diffuse samples. This phenomenon has been extensively studied with classical scatterers. In this letter we report the first experimental evidence for coherent backscattering of light in a laser-cooled gas of Rubidium atoms.
