Localization and Topological Properties of SU(3) Fermions in non-Abelian Gauge Fields: Color-Orbit Coupling and Color-Flip Fields

The interplay between disorder, gauge fields, and internal degrees of freedom fundamentally affects localization and topological properties of quantum many-body systems. Motivated by recent experimental realizations of synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields for SU(3) colored fermions, we investigate their localization and topological properties in 1D bichromatic optical lattices consisting of strong and weak laser beams. Describing the non-Abelian gauge field via color-orbit coupling and color-flip (Rabi) fields, we obtain a tight-binding description of trapped SU(3) colored fermions corresponding to a generalized three-color Aubry-André model. We show that these fields explicitly break the conventional self-duality of a simple three-color Aubry-André system. This duality breaking generates mobility regions across the energy spectrum, demonstrating that non-Abelian fields can either enhance or hinder color localization. Using exact diagonalization, density-of-states evaluations, and finite-size scaling of the inverse participation ratio, we obtain phase diagrams that identify regions of extended or localized bulk states. Furthermore, the color-orbit and Rabi fields induce edge states with topological properties. We develop an exact mapping from our 1D disorder model into a 2D color Harper model with a fictitious magnetic flux ratio and dimension controlled by the weak laser beam's phase. Using this mapping, we evaluate topological invariants, such as the charge-charge Chern number, for edge states emerging in energy gaps, revealing the topological insulating nature of several gapped phases. Lastly, we identify that these topological color-insulator phases can energetically neighbor three configurations: two extended, two localized, or one of each. This sharply contrasts with conventional topological insulators, which always neighbor two extended phases.

Tighter upper bounds on the critical temperature of two-dimensional superconductors and superfluids from the BCS to the Bose regime

We discuss standard and tighter upper bounds on the critical temperature $T_c$ of two-dimensional (2D) superconductors and superfluids versus particle density $n$ or filling factor $ν$ for continuum and lattice systems from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose regime. We discuss only one-band Hamiltonians, where the transition from the normal to superconducting (superfluid) phase is governed by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) mechanism of vortex-antivortex binding, such that a direct relation between the superfluid density tensor and $T_c$ exists. We demonstrate that it is imperative to consider at least the full effect of phase fluctuations of order parameter for superconductivity (superfluidity) to establish tighter bounds. Using the renormalization group, we obtain phase-fluctuation critical temperature $T_c^θ$, a much tighter upper bound to critical temperature supremum $T_c^{\rm sup}$ than standard critical temperature upper bound $T_c^{\rm up1}$ from Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule. We go beyond textbook phase-fluctuation theories and show that chemical potential renormalization, order parameter equation, and Nelson-Kosterlitz relation need to be solved self-consistently and simultaneously with renormalization group flow equation to produce $T_c^θ$ over the entire BCS-Bose crossover. We note that an analytic theory including modulus fluctuations of the order parameter valid throughout the BCS-Bose evolution is still lacking, but the inclusion of modulus fluctuations can only produce a critical temperature lower than $T_c^θ$ and thus produce an even tighter bound to $T_c^{\rm sup}$. We conclude by indicating that if the measured critical temperature exceeds $T_c^θ$ in experiments involving 2D single-band systems, then a non-BKT mechanism must be invoked to describe the superconducting (superfluid) transition.

Eigenspectrum, Chern Numbers and Phase Diagrams of Ultracold Color-orbit Coupled SU(3) Fermions in Optical Lattices

We study ultracold color fermions with three internal states Red, Green and Blue with ${\rm SU(3)}$ symmetry in optical lattices, when color-orbit coupling and color-flip fields are present. This system corresponds to a generalization of two-internal state fermions with ${\rm SU(2)}$ symmetry in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and spin-flipping Zeeman fields. We investigate the eigenspectrum and Chern numbers to describe different topological phases that emerge in the phase diagrams of color-orbit coupled fermions in optical lattices. We obtain the phases as a function of artificial magnetic, color-orbit and color-flip fields that can be independently controlled. For fixed artificial magnetic flux ratio, we identify topological quantum phases and phase transitions in the phase diagrams of chemical potential versus color-flip fields or color-orbit coupling, where the chirality and number of midgap edge states changes. The topologically non-trivial phases are classified in three groups: the first group has total non-zero chirality and exhibit only the quantum charge Hall effect; the second group has total non-zero chirality and exhibit both quantum charge and quantum color Hall effects; and the third group has total zero chirality, but exhibit the quantum color Hall effect. These phases are generalizations of the quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall phases for charged spin-$1/2$ fermions. Lastly, we also describe the color density of states and a staircase structure in the total and color filling factors versus chemical potential for fixed color-orbit, color-flip and magnetic flux ratio. We show the existence of incompressible states at rational filling factors precisely given by a gap-labelling theorem that relates the filling factors to the magnetic flux ratio and topological quantum numbers.

Enhanced transport of spin-orbit coupled Bose gases in disordered potentials

Anderson localization is a single particle localization phenomena in disordered media that is accompanied by an absence of diffusion. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) describes an interaction between a particle's spin and its momentum that directly affects its energy dispersion, for example creating dispersion relations with gaps and multiple local minima. We show theoretically that combining one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling with a transverse Zeeman field suppresses the effects of disorder, thereby increasing the localization length and conductivity. This increase results from a suppression of back scattering between states in the gap of the SOC dispersion relation. Here, we focus specifically on the interplay of disorder from an optical speckle potential and SOC generated by two-photon Raman processes in quasi-1D Bose-Einstein condensates. We first describe back-scattering using a Fermi's golden rule approach, and then numerically confirm this picture by solving the time-dependent 1D Gross Pitaevskii equation for a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate with SOC and disorder. We find that on the 10's of millisecond time scale of typical cold atom experiments moving in harmonic traps, initial states with momentum in the zero-momentum SOC gap evolve with negligible back-scattering, while without SOC these same states rapidly localize.

Nematic-orbit coupling and nematic density waves in spin-1 condensates

We propose the creation of artificial nematic-orbit coupling in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, in analogy to spin-orbit coupling. Using a suitably designed microwave chip, the quadratic Zeeman shift, normally uniform in space, can be made to be spatio-temporally varying, leading to a coupling between spatial and nematic degrees of freedom. A phase diagram is explored where three quantum phases with the nematic order emerge: easy-axis, easy-plane with single-well and easy-plane with double well structure in momentum space. By including spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions, we also obtain the low energy excitation spectra in these three phases. Lastly, we show that the nematic-orbit coupling leads to a periodic nematic density modulation in relation to the period $λ_T$ of the cosinusoidal quadratic Zeeman term. Our results point to the rich possibilities for manipulation of tensorial degrees of freedom in ultracold gases without requiring Raman lasers, and therefore, obviating light-scattering induced heating.

Topological Color-Hall Insulators: SU(3) Fermions in Optical Lattices

We discuss the emergence of topological color insulators in optical lattices as quantum phases of SU(3) ultra-cold neutral fermions. We construct the Chern matrix and classify all insulating phases in terms of three topological invariants: the charge-charge, the color-charge and the color-color Chern numbers. Our classification transcends that of SU(2) systems which require only the charge-charge (charge-Hall) and spin-charge (spin-Hall) Chern numbers. To illustrate the topological classification of the insulating phases of SU(3) fermions, we construct phase diagrams of chemical potential and color-orbit parameter versus color-flip fields for fixed magnetic flux ratio.

Unconventional color superfluidity in ultra-cold fermions: Quintuplet pairing, quintuple point and pentacriticality

We describe the emergence of color superfluidity in ultra-cold fermions induced by color-orbit and color-flip fields that transform a conventional singlet-pairing s-wave system into an unconventional non-s-wave superfluid with quintuplet pairing. We show that the tuning of interactions, color-orbit and color-flip fields transforms a momentum-independent scalar order parameter into an explicitly momentum-dependent tensor order parameter. We classify all unconventional superfluid phases in terms of the {\it loci} of zeros of their quasi-particle excitation spectrum in momentum space and we identify several Lifshitz-type topological transitions. Furthermore, when boundaries between phases are crossed, non-analyticities in the compressibility arise. We find a quintuple point, which is also pentacritical, where four gapless superfluid phases converge into a fully gapped superfluid phase.

Staircase in magnetization and entanglement entropy of spin squeezed condensates

Staircases in response functions are associated with physically observable quantities that respond discretely to continuous tuning of a control parameter. A well-known example is the quantization of the Hall conductivity in two dimensional electron gases at high magnetic fields. Here, we show that such a staircase response also appears in the magnetization of spin-1 atomic ensembles evolving under several spin-squeezing Hamiltonians. We discuss three examples, two mesoscopic and one macroscopic, where the system's magnetization vector responds discretely to continuous tuning of the applied magnetic field or the atom density, thus producing a magnetization staircase. The examples that we consider are directly related to Hamiltonians that have been implemented experimentally in the context of spin and spin-nematic squeezing. Thus, our results can be readily put to experimental test in spin-1 ferromagnetic $^{87}$Rb and anti-ferromagnetic $^{23}$Na condensates.

Quantum Phases of Two-Component Bosons with Spin-Orbit Coupling in Optical Lattices

Ultracold bosons in optical lattices are one of the few systems where bosonic matter is known to exhibit strong correlations. Here we push the frontier of our understanding of interacting bosons in optical lattices by adding synthetic spin-orbit coupling, and show that new kinds of density- and chiral-orders develop. The competition between the optical lattice period and the spin-orbit coupling length -- which can be made comparable in experiments -- along with the spin hybridization induced by a transverse field (i.e., Rabi coupling) and interparticle interactions create a rich variety of quantum phases including uniform, non-uniform and phase-separated superfluids, as well as Mott insulators. The spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena at the transitions between them are explained by a two-order-parameter Ginzburg-Landau model with multiparticle umklapp processes. Finally, in order to characterize each phase, we calculated their experimentally measurable crystal momentum distributions.

Superfluid Phases of Dipolar Fermions in Harmonically Trapped Optical Lattices

We describe the emergence of superfluid phases of ultracold dipolar fermions in optical lattices for two-dimensional systems. Considering the many-body screening of dipolar interactions at intermediate and larger filling factors, we show that several superfluid phases with distinct pairing symmetries naturally arise in the singlet channel: local s-wave $(sl)$, extended s-wave $(se)$, d-wave $(d)$ or time-reversal-symmetry breaking $(sl + se \pm id)$-wave. We obtain the temperature versus filling factor phase diagram and show that d-wave pairing is favored near half-filling, that $(sl + se)$-wave is favored near zero or full filling, and that time-reversal-breaking $(sl + se \pm id)$-wave is favored in between. The inclusion of a harmonic trap reveals that a sequence of phases can coexist in the cloud depending on the filling factor at the center of the trap. Most notably in the spatial region where the $(sl + se \pm id)$-wave superfluid occurs, spontaneous currents are generated, and may be detected using velocity sensitive Bragg spectroscopy.

Parity violation in ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures with strong spin-orbit coupling

We study spectroscopic properties of ferromagnetic-superconductor heterostructures with strong spin-orbit coupling of the Rashba type and in the presence of exchange fields. The superconducting layer (film) experiences both an intrinsic spin-orbit field and an exchange field due to the proximity to ferromagnetic layers (films). We analyse the temperature dependence of the order parameter for superconductivity at various values of exchange field and spin-orbit coupling, and describe momentum-dependent properties that exhibit parity violation. Furthermore, we show that parity violation can be probed in tunneling experiments of the single-particle density of states and in photoemission experiments of the momentum distribution.

Wigner Crystallization in Two Dimensions: Evolution from Long- to Short-Ranged Forces

We study fermions in two dimensions interacting via a long-ranged 1/r potential for small particle separations and a short-ranged 1/r^3 potential for larger separations in comparison to a length scale ξ. We compute the energy of the Wigner crystal and of the homogeneous Fermi liquid phases using a variational approach, and determined the phase diagram as a function of density and ξat zero temperature. We discuss the collective modes in the Fermi liquid phase, finite temperature effects on the phase diagram, and possible experimental realizations of this model.

Parity violating superfluidity in ultra-cold fermions under the influence of artificial non-Abelian gauge fields

We discuss the creation of parity violating Fermi superfluids in the presence of non-Abelian gauge fields involving spin-orbit coupling and crossed Zeeman fields. We focus on spin-orbit coupling with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus (ERD) strengths which has been realized experimentally in ultra-cold atoms, but we also discuss the case of arbitrary mixing of Rashba and Dresselhaus (RD) and of Rashba-only (RO) spin-orbit coupling. To illustrate the emergence of parity violation in the superfluid, we analyze first the excitation spectrum in the normal state and show that the generalized helicity bands do not have inversion symmetry in momentum space when crossed Zeeman fields are present. This is also reflected in the superfluid phase, where the order parameter tensor in the generalized helicity basis violates parity. However, the pairing fields in singlet and triplet channels of the generalized helicity basis are still parity even and odd, respectively. Parity violation is further reflected on ground state properties such as the spin-resolved momentum distribution, and in excitation properties such as the spin-dependent spectral function and density of states.

Quantum Degenerate Fermi Gas with Spin-orbit Coupling and Crossed Zeeman Fields

We study quantum degenerate ultra-cold Fermi gases in the presence of artificial spin-orbit coupling and crossed Zeeman fields. We emphasize the case where parity is violated in the excitation spectrum and compare it with the simpler situation where parity is preserved. We investigate in detail spectroscopic properties such as the excitation spectrum, the spectral function, momentum distribution and density of states for the cases where parity is preserved or violated. Similarly, we show that thermodynamic properties such as pressure, chemical potential, entropy, specific heat, isothermal compressibility and induced spin polarization become anisotropic as a function of Zeeman field components, when parity is violated. Lastly, we discuss the effects of interactions and present results for the pairing temperature as the precursor for the transition to a superfluid state. In particular, we find that the pairing temperature is dramatically reduced in the weak interaction regime as parity violation gets stronger, and that the momentum dependence of the order parameter for superfluidity violates parity when crossed Zeeman fields are present for finite spin-orbit coupling.

Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of candidate topological superconductor Cu0.25Bi2Se3

We perform a point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopic study of the topological superconducting material, Cu0.25Bi2Se3, in the ballistic regime using a normal-metal gold tip. We observe distinct point-contact spectra on the superconducting and non-superconducting regions of the crystal surface: the former shows a marked zero-bias conductance peak, indicative of unconventional superconductivity, while the latter exhibits a pseudogap-like feature. In both cases the measured differential conductance spectra exhibit a large linear background, preventing direct quantitative comparison with theory. We attribute this background to inelastic scattering at the tip-sample interface, and compare the background-subtracted spectra with a single-band p-wave model.

We analyze several thermodynamic properties to characterize different superfluid phases including pressure, compressibility, induced polarization, and spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we compute the momentum distribution and construct topological invariants for each of the superfluid phases.

Who is the Lord of the Rings: Majorana, Dirac or Lifshitz? The Spin-Orbit-Zeeman Saga in Ultra-cold Fermions

We discuss the emergence of rings of zero-energy excitations in momentum space for superfluid phases of ultra-cold fermions when spin-orbit, Zeeman fields and interactions are varied. We show that phases containing rings of nodes possess non-trivial topological invariants, and that phase transitions between distinct topological phases belong to the Lifshitz class. Upon crossing phase boundaries, existing massless Dirac fermions in the gapless phase anihilate to produce bulk zero-mode Majorana fermions at phase boundaries and then become massive Dirac fermions in the gapped phase. We characterize these tunable topological phase transitions via several spectroscopic properties, including excitation spectrum, spectral function and momentum distribution. Since the emergence or disappearance of rings leads to topological transitions in momentum space, we conclude that Lifshitz is the lord of the rings.

Artificial spin-orbit coupling in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids

We develop a theory for interacting fermions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields, and show that many new superfluids phases, which are topological in nature, emerge. Depending on values of spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman fields, and interactions, initially gapped s-wave superfluids acquire p-wave, d-wave, f-wave and higher angular momentum components, which produce zeros in the excitation spectrum, rendering the superfluid gapless. Several multi-critical points, which separate topological superfluid phases from normal or non-uniform, are accessible depending on spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman fields or interactions, setting the stage for the study of tunable topological superfluids.
