Observation of a phonon avalanche in highly photoexcited hybrid perovskite single crystals

In hybrid lead halide perovskites, the coupling between photogenerated charges and the ionic degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in defining the intrinsic limit of carrier mobility and lifetime. However, direct investigation of this fundamental interaction remains challenging because its relevant dynamics occur on ultrashort spatial and ultrafast temporal scales. Here, we unveil the coupled electron-lattice dynamics of a CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal upon intense photoexcitation through a unique combination of ultrafast electron diffraction, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-dependent ab initio calculations. We observe the structural signature of a hot-phonon bottleneck effect that prevents rapid carrier relaxation, and we uncover a phonon avalanche mechanism responsible for breaking the bottleneck. The avalanche involves a collective emission of low-energy phonons - mainly associated with the organic sub-lattice - that proceeds in a regenerative manner and correlates with the accumulation and confinement of photocarriers at the crystal surface. Our results indicate that in hybrid perovskites carrier transport and spatial confinement are key to controlling the electron-phonon interaction and their rational engineering is relevant for future applications in optoelectronic devices.

Spin entanglement in atoms and molecules

We investigate the effects of inhomogeneities on spin entanglement in many-electron systems from an ab-initio approach. The key quantity in our approach is the local spin entanglement length, which is derived from the local concurrence of the electronic system. Although the concurrence for an interacting systems is a highly nonlocal functional of the density, it does have a simple, albeit approximate expression in terms of Kohn-Sham orbitals. We show that the electron localization function -- well known in quantum chemistry as a descriptor of atomic shells and molecular bonds -- can be reinterpreted in terms of the ratio of the local entanglement length of the inhomogeneous system to the entanglement length of a homogenous system at the same density. We find that the spin entanglement is remarkably enhanced in atomic shells and molecular bonds.

Electron-Electron Interactions in Artificial Graphene

Recent advances in the creation and modulation of graphene-like systems are introducing a science of "designer Dirac materials". In its original definition, artificial graphene is a man-made nanostructure that consists of identical potential wells (quantum dots) arranged in a adjustable honeycomb lattice in the two-dimensional electron gas. As our ability to control the quality of artificial graphene samples improves, so grows the need for an accurate theory of its electronic properties, including the effects of electron-electron interactions. Here we determine those effects on the band structure and on the emergence of Dirac points.

Photo-excitation of a light-harvesting supra-molecular triad: a Time-Dependent DFT study

We present the first time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) calculation on a light harvesting triad carotenoid-diaryl-porphyrin-C60. Besides the numerical challenge that the ab initio study of the electronic structure of such a large system presents, we show that TDDFT is able to provide an accurate description of the excited state properties of the system. In particular we calculate the photo-absorption spectrum of the supra-molecular assembly, and we provide an interpretation of the photo-excitation mechanism in terms of the properties of the component moieties. The spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data, and provides useful insight on the photo-induced charge transfer mechanism which characterizes the system.
