Nuclear Structure Functions at Small x from Inelastic Shadowing and Diffraction

A model for shadowing in nuclear structure functions at small $x$ and small or moderate $Q^2$ is presented using the relation with diffraction that arises from Gribov's reggeon calculus. A reasonable description of the experimental data is obtained with no fitted parameters. A comparison with predictions from other models is performed.

Jets in heavy ion collisions

High energetic particles traversing a dense medium lose a sizable part of their energy in form of gluon radiation. As a result, the rate of high-$p_t$ particles is expected to be suppressed in heavy ion collisions with respect to the proton case. Recent experimental data from RHIC strongly support this scenario. This allows to study the properties of the medium by the amount of jet quenching it produces. The angular dependence of the radiation is modified in the medium in a characteristic way. This provides another tool to study the medium properties in a more differential measurement.

Nuclear Structure Functions at Small x from Inelastic Shadowing and Diffraction

Nuclear structure functions at small x and small or moderate $Q^2$ are studied using the relation with diffraction on nucleons which arises from Gribov's Reggeon Calculus. A reasonable description of experimental data is obtained with no fitted parameters. A comparison with other models and predictions for future lepton-ion colliders are provided. Consequences for the reduction of multiplicities in nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies of RHIC and LHC are examined.

Nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP equations in view of the HERA data

The effects of the first nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP evolution equations are studied by using the recent HERA data for the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ of the free proton and the parton distributions from CTEQ5L and CTEQ6L as a baseline. By requiring a good fit to the H1 data, we determine initial parton distributions at $Q_0^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ for the nonlinear scale evolution. We show that the nonlinear corrections improve the agreement with the $F_2(x,Q^2)$ data in the region of $x\sim 3\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2\sim 1.5$ GeV$^2$ without paying the price of obtaining a worse agreement at larger values of $x$ and $Q^2$. For the gluon distribution the nonlinear effects are found to play an increasingly important role at $x\lsim 10^{-3}$ and $Q^2\lsim10$ GeV$^2$, but rapidly vanish at larger values of $x$ and $Q^2$. Consequently, contrary to CTEQ6L, the obtained gluon distribution at $Q^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ shows a power-like growth at small $x$. Relative to the CTEQ6L gluons, an enhancement up to a factor $\sim6$ at $x=10^{-5}$, $Q_0^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ reduces to a negligible difference at $Q^2\gsim 10$ GeV$^2$.

Global DGLAP fit analyses of the nPDF: EKS98 and HKM

The DGLAP analyses of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDF) based on the global fits to the data are reviewed, and the results from EKS98 and HKM are compared. The usefulness of measuring hard probes in $pA$ collisions, at the LHC in particular, is demonstrated.

DGLAP analyses of nPDF: constraints from data

We explain how the constraints from present experimental data can be used to obtain the nPDF in the framework of LO DGLAP evolution. We will also compare the only two available sets of this type and comment on the important information that neutrino factories could provide.

Constraints for nuclear gluon densities from DIS data

The $Q^2$ dependence of the ratios of nuclear structure functions $F_2^A$ is studied by performing QCD evolution of nuclear parton distribution functions. The log $Q^2$ slope of these ratios is very sensitive to the nuclear gluon distribution function. Taking different parametrizations, we show that the NMC data on the $Q^2$ dependence of $F_2^{\rm Sn}/F_2^{\rm C}$ rule out the case where nuclear shadowing (suppression) of gluons at $x\sim 0.01$ is much larger than the shadowing observed in the ratio $F_2^A/F_2^{\rm D}$. We also take into account modifications to the DGLAP evolution by including gluon fusion terms and see that the effect is small at present energies, and, in any case, a strong gluon shadowing is not favored. The region studied ($x \sim 0.01$) is the most relevant for RHIC multiplicities.

Aspects of the unitarized soft multipomeron approach in DIS and diffraction

We study in detail the main features of the unitarized Regge model (CFKS), recently proposed to describe the small-$Q^2$ domain. It takes into account a two-component description with two types of unitarized contributions: one is the multiple Pomeron exchanges contribution, interacting with the large dipole size configurations, and the other one consists on a unitarized dipole cross section, describing the interaction with the small size dipoles. We compare the resulting dipole cross section to that from the saturation model (GBW).

Strange particle production at RHIC in the Dual Parton Model

We compute the mid-rapidity densities of pions, kaons, baryons and antibaryons in $Au$-$Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 130 GeV in the Dual Parton Model supplemented with final state interaction (comovers interaction). The ratios $B/n_{part}$ ($\bar{B}/n_{part}$) increase between peripheral ($n_{part} = 18$) and central ($n_{part} = 350)$ collisions by a factor 2.4 (2.0) for $Λ$'s, 4.8 (4.1) for $Ξ$'s and 16.5 (13.5) for $Ω$'s. The ratio $K^-/π^-$ increases by a factor 1.3 in the same centrality range. A comparison with available data is presented.

Aspects of the Unitarized Soft Multipomeron Approach in DIS and Diffraction

We study in detail the main features of the unitarized Regge model (CFKS), recently proposed to describe the small-$Q^2$ domain. It takes into account a two-component description with two types of unitarized contributions: one is the multiple pomeron exchange contribution, interacting with the large dipole configurations, and the other one consists of a unitarized dipole cross section, describing the interaction with the small size dipoles. We analyze the ratio between soft and hard pieces as a function of the virtuality, and also compare the resulting dipole cross section to that from the saturation model. Diffraction dissociation is also considered, showing the scaling violations in diffractive DIS and estimating the corresponding logarithmic slope.

Constraints for nuclear gluon shadowing from DIS data

The $Q^2$ dependence of the ratios of the cross sections of deep inelastic lepton--nucleus scattering is studied in the framework of leading twist, lowest order perturbative QCD. The $\log Q^2$ slope of the ratio $F_2^{\rm Sn}/F_2^{\rm C}$ is computed by using the DGLAP evolution equations, and shown to be sensitive to the nuclear gluon distribution functions. Four different parametrizations for the nuclear effects of parton distributions are studied. We show that the NMC data on the $Q^2$ dependence of $F_2^{\rm Sn}/F_2^{\rm C}$ rule out the case where nuclear shadowing (suppression) of gluons at $x\sim 0.01$ is much larger than the shadowing observed in the ratio $F_2^A/F_2^{\rm D}$. We also show that the possible nonlinear correction terms due to gluon fusion in the evolution equations do not change this conclusion. Some consequences for computation of RHIC multiplicities, which probe the region $x\gsim0.01$, are also discussed.

Nuclear parton distributions in the DGLAP approach

Determination of the nuclear parton distributions within the framework of perturbative QCD, the DGLAP equations in particular, is discussed. Scale and flavour dependent nuclear effects in the parton distributions are compared with the scale and flavour independent parametrizations of HIJING and of the Hard Probe Collaboration. A comparison with the data from deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering and the Drell-Yan process in proton-nucleus collisions is shown.

A geometrical estimation of saturation of partonic densities

We propose a new criterium for saturation of the density of partons both in nucleons and nuclei. It is applicable to any multiple scattering model which would be used to compute the number of strings exchanged in $ep$ and $eA$ collisions. The criterium is based on percolation of strings, and the onset of percolation is estimated from expectations coming from the study of heavy ion collisions at high energies. We interpret this onset as an indication of saturation of the density of partons in the wave function of the hadron. In order to produce quantitative results, a particular model fitted to describe present HERA data and generalized to the nuclear case is used. Nevertheless, with the number of scatterings controlled by the relation between inclusive and diffractive processes, conclusions are weakly model-dependent as long as different models are tuned to describe the experimental data. This constitutes a new approach, based on the eikonal description of soft hadronic collisions, and different from others which employ either perturbative QCD ideas or semiclassical methods. It offers an alternative picture for saturation in the small $Q^2$ region.

DIS data and the problem of saturation in small-x physics

New experimental data from HERA explore the region of very small x and small and moderate $Q^2$. We study the role of unitarity corrections in the description of these data. For that, we propose a model separating the small and large components of the $q\bar q$ fluctuation. This model gives a unified description of total and diffractive production in $γ^*p$ interactions. In this model unitarity corrections are controlled by diffraction data.

x_F-dependence of J/Psi suppression in pA collisions

Coherence effects are important in the description of collisions with extended objects as nuclei. At fixed target energies and small x_F, the coherence length of the fluctuation containing the $c\bar c$ is small and the usual nuclear absorption model is valid. However, at higher energies and/or x_F the nucleus is seen as a whole by the fluctuation. In this case, the total, not the absorptive, $c\bar c-N$ cross section controls the suppression and also shadowing of gluons appears. We propose that the growth of the coherence length can explain the x_F-dependence of present experimental data. For this, we need a ratio of absorptive over total $c\bar c-N$ cross section of 0.2.
