A Rationale for Long-lived Quarks and Leptons at the LHC: Low Energy Flavour Theory

In the framework of gauged flavour symmetries, new fermions in parity symmetric representations of the standard model are generically needed for the compensation of mixed anomalies. The key point is that their masses are also protected by flavour symmetries and some of them are expected to lie way below the flavour symmetry breaking scale(s), which has to occur many orders of magnitude above the electroweak scale to be compatible with the available data from flavour changing neutral currents and CP violation experiments. We argue that, actually, some of these fermions would plausibly get masses within the LHC range. If they are taken to be heavy quarks and leptons, in (bi)-fundamental representations of the standard model symmetries, their mixings with the light ones are strongly constrained to be very small by electroweak precision data. The alternative chosen here is to exactly forbid such mixings by breaking of flavour symmetries into an exact discrete symmetry, the so-called proton-hexality, primarily suggested to avoid proton decay. As a consequence of the large value needed for the flavour breaking scale, those heavy particles are long-lived and rather appropriate for the current and future searches at the LHC for quasi-stable hadrons and leptons. In fact, the LHC experiments have already started to look for them.

Real and Imaginary Elements of Fermion Mass Matrices

Prompted by the recent better determination of the angles of the unitarity triangle, we re-appraise the problem of finding simple fermion mass textures, possibly linked to some symmetry principle and compatible with grand unification. In particular, the indication that the angle alpha is close to rectangle turns out to be the crucial ingredient leading us to single out fermion mass textures whose elements are either real or purely imaginary. In terms of the five parameters ascribed to the quark sector, these textures reproduce the eight experimental data on quark mass ratios and mixings within 1 sigma. When embedded in an SU(5) framework, these textures suggest a common origin for quark and lepton CP violations, also linked to the spontaneous breaking of the gauge group.

Sleptonarium (Constraints on the CP and Flavour Pattern of Scalar Lepton Masses)

The constraints on the flavour and CP structure of scalar lepton mass matrices are systematically collected. The display of the resulting upper bounds on the lepton -slepton misalignment parameters is designed for an easy inspection of very large classes of models and the formula are arranged so as to suggest useful approximations. Interferences among the different contributions to lepton flavour violating transitions and lepton electric and magnetic dipole moments of generic character can either tighten or loose the bounds. A combined analysis of all rare leptonic transitions can disentangle the different contributions to yield hints on several phenomenological issues. The possible impact of these results on the study of the slepton misalignment originated in the seesaw mechanism and grand-unified theories is emphasized since the planned experiments are getting close to the precision required in such tests.

Up Quark Masses from Down Quark Masses

The quark and charged lepton masses and the angles and phase of the CKM mixing matrix are nicely reproduced in a model which assumes SU(3)xSU(3) flavour symmetry broken by the v.e.v.'s of fields in its bi-fundamental representation. The relations among the quark mass eigenvalues, m_u/m_c \approx m_c/m_t \approx m^2_d/m^2_s \approx m^2_s/m^2_b \approx Λ^2_{GUT}/M^2_{Pl}, follow from the broken flavour symmetry. Large tan(beta) is required which also provides the best fits to data for the obtained textures. Lepton-quark grandunification with a field that breaks both SU(5) and the flavour group correctly extends the predictions to the charged lepton masses. The seesaw extension of the model to the neutrino sector predicts a Majorana mass matrix quadratically hierarchical as compared to the neutrino Dirac mass matrix, naturally yielding large mixings and low mass hierarchy for neutrinos.

On Power and Complementarity of the Experimental Constraints on Seesaw Models

We demonstrate the impact that present lepton flavour and CP violation data - neutrino oscillations, baryon asymmetry of the universe, flavour violations in charged lepton decays and lepton electric dipole moments - have on supersymmetric seesaw theories by analysing the class of models based on a U(1) flavour symmetry. The fermion U(1) charges are determined to a large extent by the data, the flavour patterns being naturally defined through their choice. The selected models generically predict mu -> e gamma within the reach of the projected experiments, which could be sensitive enough to exclude the whole class of them. By now, the present sensitivity to mu -> e gamma already provides stringent bounds on the contribution of the seesaw couplings to the lepton electric dipole moments.

Charged Lepton Flavour and CP Violations: Theoretical Impact of Present and Future Experiments

We shortly review and emphasize how l_j -> l_i gamma experiments and the searches for lepton e.d.m. are constraining New Physics model building. They are pure signals of new phenomena around the TeV scale since the SM contributions are definitely negligible. It is quite remarkable that they also give effective tests of the LFV & CPV in seesaw couplings and in grand-unified theories. In particular, the limits on d_e nicely complement the proton decay bounds in selecting O(10) models.

Minimal Scenarios for Leptogenesis and CP Violation

The relation between leptogenesis and CP violation at low energies is analyzed in detail in the framework of the minimal seesaw mechanism. Working, without loss of generality, in a weak basis where both the charged lepton and the right-handed Majorana mass matrices are diagonal and real, we consider a convenient generic parametrization of the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix and identify the necessary condition which has to be satisfied in order to establish a direct link between leptogenesis and CP violation at low energies. In the context of the LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem, we present minimal scenarios which allow for the full determination of the cosmological baryon asymmetry and the strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations. Some specific realizations of these minimal scenarios are considered. The question of the relative sign between the baryon asymmetry and CP violation at low energies is also discussed.

Intermediate Symmetries in the Spontaneous Breaking of Supersymmetric SO(10)

We study the supersymmetric spontaneous symmetry breaking of SO(10) into SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) for the most physically interesting cases of SU(5) or flipped SU(5)xU(1) intermediate symmetries. The first case is more easily realized while the second one requires a fine-tuning condition on the parameters of the superpotential. This is because in the case of SU(5) symmetry there is at most one singlet of the residual symmetry in each SO(10) irreducible representation. We also point out on more general grounds in supersymmetric GUT's that some intermediate symmetries can be exactly realized and others can only be approximated by fine-tuning. In the first category, there could occur some tunneling between the vacua with exact and approximate intermediate symmetry. The flipped SU(5)xU(1) symmetry improves the unification of gauge couplings if (B-L) is broken by (B-L)=1 scalars yielding right handed neutrino masses below 10^{14} GeV}.

Models with Inverse Sfermion Mass Hierarchy and Decoupling of the SUSY FCNC Effects

We study the decoupling of the first two squark and slepton families in order to lower the flavour changing neutral current effects. Models with inverse sfermion mass hierarchy based upon gauged U(1) flavour symmetries provide a natural framework where decoupling can be implemented. Decoupling requires a large gap between the Fermi scale and the supersymmetry breaking scale. Maintaining the electroweak symmetry breaking at the Fermi scale requires some fine-tuning that we investigate by solving the two-loop renormalization group equations. We show that the two-loop effects are governed by the anomaly compensated by the Green-Schwarz mechanism and can be determined from the quark and lepton masses. The electroweak breaking constraints lead to a small $μ$ scenario where the LSP is Higgsino-like.

Constraints on Phases of Supersymmetric Flavour Conserving Couplings

In the unconstrained MSSM, we reanalyze the constraints on the phases of supersymmetric flavour conserving couplings that follow from the electron and neutron electric dipole moments (EDM). We find that the constraints become weak if at least one exchanged superpartner mass is >O(1 TeV) or if we accept large cancellations among different contributions. However, such cancellations have no evident underlying symmetry principle. For light superpartners, models with small phases look like the easiest solution to the experimental EDM constraints. This conclusion becomes stronger the larger is the value of $\tanβ$. We discuss also the dependence of $ε_K$, $Δm_B$ and $b\to sγ$ decay on those phases.

Anomaly Matching and Syzygies in N=1 Gauge Theories

We investigate the connection between the moduli space of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories and the set of polynomial gauge invariants constrained by classical/quantum relations called syzygies. We examine the existence of a superpotential reproducing these syzygies and the link with the 't Hooft anomaly matching between the fundamental fields at high energy and the gauge invariant degrees of freedom at low energy for the flavour symmetry group. We show that the anomaly matching is equivalent to the vanishing of the flavour anomaly on the normal space to the manifold defined by the syzygies. For normal spaces in a real representation of the flavour group we strengthen the connection between the 't Hooft anomaly matching and the existence of a superpotential by constructing a flavour invariant polynomial whose gradient vanishes at least on the solutions of the syzygies. This corroborates a recent definition of confining theories. We illustrate our general result by considering two examples based on the SU(Nc) and Spin(7) gauge theories. We also examine the role of syzygies in the context of non-Abelian duality. We emphasize the relevance of non-perturbative effects in the dual magnetic theories in proving the equivalence of the electric and magnetic syzygies.

Report of the GDR working group on the R-parity violation

This report summarizes the work of the "R-parity violation group" of the French Research Network (GDR) in Supersymmetry, concerning the physics of supersymmetric models without conservation of R-parity at HERA, LEP, Tevatron and LHC and limits on R-parity violating couplings from various processes. The report includes a discussion of the recent searches at the HERA experiment, prospects for new experiments, a review of the existing limits, and also theoretically motivated alternatives to R-parity and a brief discussion on the implications of R-parity violation on the neutrino masses.

Quark flavour conserving violations of the lepton number

We study supersymmetric models of lepton and baryon number violation based on an abelian family gauge group. Due to possible lepton-Higgs mixing, the lepton violating couplings are related to the Yukawa couplings and may be generated by them even if they were absent in the original theory. Such terms may be dominant and are not given by the naive family charge counting rules. This enhancement mechanism can provide an alignment between lepton-number violating terms and Yukawa couplings: as a result they conserve quark flavour. A natural way of suppressing baryon number violation in this class of models is also proposed.

Geometrical approach to duality in N=1 supersymmetric theories

We investigate the geometry of the moduli spaces of dual electric and magnetic N=1 supersymmetric field theories. Using the SU(N_c) gauge group as a guideline we show that the electric and magnetic moduli spaces coincide for a suitable choice of the Kahler potential of the magnetic theory. We analyse the Kahler structure of the dual moduli spaces.

Phenomenology of supersymmetric models with a singlet

The supersymmetric extension of the standard model with an additional gauge singlet is analysed in detail in the light of the recent experimental bounds on supersymmetric particles. The useful part of the parameter space and the particle spectrum are displayed. We find that once the recent bounds on the chargino mass are imposed, all other new particles practically satisfy the present experimental limits. Special attention is given to particles to be searched for in the future experiments. The singlet fields tend to decouple and give rise to an effective MSSM, enlarging the validity of many phenomenological analyses based in the minimal field content. However, in some ranges of the parameters the singlino is the lightest neutralino, which modifies the signature for susy particles. Simple analytical approximations are developed that qualitatively explain the numerical results.

Abelian Flavour Symmetries in Supersymmetric Models

We propose a theory of flavour based on abelian horizontal gauge symmetries and modular invariances. We construct explicit supergravity models where the scale of the horizontal $U(1)$ symmetry breaking is fixed by the Green-Schwarz mechanism for anomaly cancellation. The supersymmetric spectrum is obtained in terms of the $U(1)$ charges which are determined by the Yukawa matrices.

Higgs Physics at LEP2

In this report we review the prospects for Higgs physics at LEP2. The theoretical aspects and the phenomenology of Higgs particles are discussed within the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The experimental search techniques are described and the discovery limits for Higgs bosons in the LEP2 energy range are summarized. In addition, opportunities of detecting Higgs particles in non-minimal extensions of the SM and the MSSM are investigated.
