The Dielectric Skyrme model

We consider a version of the Skyrme model where both the kinetic term and the Skyrme term are multiplied by field-dependent coupling functions. For suitable choices, this "dielectric Skyrme model" has static solutions saturating the pertinent topological bound in the sector of baryon number (or topological charge) $B=\pm 1$ but not for higher $|B|$. This implies that higher charge field configurations are unbound, and loosely bound higher skyrmions can be achieved by small deformations of this dielectric Skyrme model. We provide a simple and explicit example for this possibility. Further, we show that the $|B|=1$ BPS sector continues to exist for certain generalizations of the model like, for instance, after its coupling to a specific version of the BPS Skyrme model, i.e., the addition of the sextic term and a particular potential.

Inflationary Twin Models

We introduce the concept of inflationary twin models, that is, a class of generalized (kinetic or "K-inflation") field theories which lead exactly to the same cosmological evolution during the inflationary period as a given standard scalar field theory of inflation. The twin concept permits to introduce generalized, K-inflation theories in a controlled manner, maintaining some inflationary predictions unaltered. Further, this concept allows to extend analytical tools like the slow-roll expansion to the realm of K-inflation theories, facilitating their investigation. Twins of a standard scalar field model of inflation still may result in different results for some inflationary observables, because of their nontrivial scalar speed of sound. This implies that non-standard twins may lead to completely viable models of inflation, even if their standard twin is ruled out by observations. We provide some explicit examples of this possibility, including the physical case of a dilaton--Dirac-Born-Infeld theory.

Kink-antikink scattering in the $ϕ^4$ model without static intersoliton forces

Kink-antikink scattering in the $ϕ^4$ model is investigated in the limit when the static inter-soliton force vanishes. We observe the formation of spectral walls and, further, identify a new phenomenon, the vacuum wall, whose existence gives rise to a bouncing structure for the annihilating solitons. Furthermore, we discover higher order spectral walls, i.e., spectral walls which form when higher harmonics enter the continuous spectrum. These higher order spectral walls not only deform the soliton trajectories, they also can be observed easily as very intense radiation bursts.

The superpotential method in cosmological inflation

Scalar field cosmological inflation has a first integral relating the Hubble function and the lagrangian of the scalar field(s), which is known under the names of "Hamilton-Jacobi approach" or "superpotential equation". Here we exploit the simplicity of this superpotential equation and use it as an alternative but equivalent cosmological evolution equation during inflation, replacing the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) equations. It turns out that all inflationary observables can be calculated directly from its solution (the superpotential). Further, the superpotential equation allows for a simple and direct calculation of the slow-roll expansion to arbitrary order and, in many cases, for an exact determination of the slow-roll attractor. It also allows for a power series expansion in the inflaton field which permits to estimate the radius of convergence of the slow-roll expansion. We consider several examples of single-field inflationary models to demonstrate the simplicity and usefulness of the method.

Spectral Walls in Soliton Collisions

During defect-antidefect scattering, bound modes frequently disappear into the continuous spectrum before the defects themselves collide. This leads to a structural, nonperturbative change in the spectrum of small excitations. Sometimes the effect can be seen as a hard wall from which the defect can bounce off. We show the existence of these spectral walls and study their properties in the $ϕ^4$ model with BPS preserving impurity, where the spectral wall phenomenon can be isolated because the static force between the antikink and the impurity vanishes. We conclude that such spectral walls should surround all solitons possessing internal modes.

Solvable self-dual impurity models

We find a family of (half) self-dual impurity models such that the self-dual (BPS) sector is exactly solvable, for any spatial distribution of the impurity, both in the topologically trivial case and for kink (or antikink) configurations. This allows us to derive the metric on the corresponding one-dimensional moduli space in an analytical form. Also the generalized translational symmetry is found in an exact form. This symmetry provides a motion on moduli space which transforms one BPS solution into another. Finally, we analyse exactly how vibrational properties (spectral modes) of the BPS solutions depend on the actual position on moduli space. These results are obtained both for the nontrivial topological sector (kinks or antikinks) as well as for the topologically trivial sector, where the motion on moduli space represents a kink-antikink annihilation process.

Domain walls that do not get stuck on impurities

We present a field theoretical model which allows for domain walls that do not get stuck on impurities. For this purpose, we consider a generalized chiral magnet domain wall action with an impurity which couples both to a potential term as well as to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction energy. We show that in the so-called critical coupling limit the interaction energy between two types of domain walls and the impurity vanishes. Therefore, at low velocity, such domain walls pass freely through the impurity with almost no loss of energy.

BPS soliton-impurity models and supersymmetry

We find supersymmetric extensions of the half-BPS soliton-impurity models in (1+1) dimensions which preserve half of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. This is related to the fact that in the bosonic sector (i.e., the half-BPS soliton-impurity model), only one soliton (for example, the kink) is a BPS configuration which solves the pertinent Bogomolnyi equation and saturates the topological energy bound. On the other hand, the topological charge conjugate state (the antikink) is not a BPS solution. This means that it obeys the full Euler-Lagrange equation and does not saturate the topological energy bound. The supersymmetric approach also allows us to construct half-BPS soliton-impurity models in (2+1) dimensions. Concretely, in the case of the $CP^1$ model, its BPS impurity generalisation preserves one-quarter of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY, while for the Abelian Higgs model at critical coupling both impurity generalisations preserving one-quarter (the case of a new, so-called Higgs impurity) as well as one-half of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY (the case of the previously known magnetic impurity) are possible. We also discuss a possible relation between the BPS $CP^1$-impurity model and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction energy.

The $ϕ^4$ model with the BPS preserving defect

The $ϕ^4$ model is coupled to an impurity in a way that preserves one-half of the BPS property. This means that the antikink-impurity bound state is still a BPS solution, i.e., a zero-pressure solution saturating the topological energy bound. The kink-impurity bound state, on the other hand, does not saturate the bound, in general. We found that, although the impurity breaks translational invariance, it is, in some sense, restored in the BPS sector where the energy of the antikink-impurity solution does not depend on their mutual distance. This is reflected in the existence of a generalised translational symmetry and a zero mode. We also investigate scattering processes. In particular, we compare the antikink-impurity interaction close to the BPS regime, which presents a rather smooth, elastic like nature, with other scattering processes. However, even in this case, after exciting a sufficiently large linear mode on the incoming antikink, we can depart from the close-to-BPS regime. This results, for example, in a backward scattering.

The BPS property and its breaking in 1+1 dimensions

We show that the BPS property is a generic feature of field theories in (1+1) dimensions, which does not put any restriction on the action. Here, by BPS solutions we understand static solutions which i) obey a lower-order Bogomolny-type equation in addition to the Euler-Lagrange equation, ii) have an energy which only depends on a topological charge and the global properties of the fields, but not on the local behaviour (coordinate dependence) of the solution, and iii) have zero pressure density. Concretely, to accomplish this program we study the existence of BPS solutions in field theories where the action functional (or energy functional) depends on higher than first derivatives of the fields. We find that that the existence of BPS solutions is a rather generic property of these higher-derivative scalar field theories. Hence, the BPS property in 1+1 dimensions can be extended not only to an arbitrary number of scalar fields and k-deformed models, but also to any (well behaved) higher derivative theory. We also investigate the possibility to destroy the BPS property by adding an impurity which breaks the translational symmetry. Further, we find that there is a particular impurity-field coupling which still preserves {\it one-half} of the BPS-ness. An example of such a BPS kink-impurity bound state is provided.

Exactly solvable gravitating perfect fluid solitons in (2+1) dimensions

The Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) baby Skyrme model coupled to gravity is considered. We show that in an asymptotically flat space-time the model still possesses the BPS property, i.e., admits a BPS reduction to first order Bogomolnyi equations, which guarantees that the corresponding proper energy is a linear function of the topological charge. We also find the mass-radius relation as well as the maximal mass and radius. All these results are obtained in an analytical manner, which implies the complete solvability of this selfgravitating matter system. If a cosmological constant is added, then the BPS property is lost. In de Sitter (dS) space-time both extremal and non-extremal solutions are found, where the former correspond to finite positive pressure solutions of the flat space-time model. For the asymptotic anti-de Sitter (AdS) case, extremal solutions do not exist as there are no negative pressure BPS baby Skyrmions in flat space-time. Non-extremal solutions with AdS asymptotics do exist and may be constructed numerically. The impact of the negative cosmological constant on the mass-radius relation is studied. We also found two potentials for which exact multi-soliton solutions in the external AdS space can be obtained. Finally, we elaborate on the implications of these findings for certain three-dimensional models of holographic QCD.

The BPS sectors of the Skyrme model and their non-BPS extensions

Two recently found coupled BPS submodels of the Skyrme model are further analyzed. Firstly, we provide a geometrical formulation of the submodels in terms of the eigenvalues of the strain tensor. Secondly, we study their thermodynamical properties and show that the mean-field equations of state coincide at high pressure and read $p=\barρ/3$. We also provide evidence that matter described by the first BPS submodel has some similarity with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Moreover, we show that extending the second submodel to a non-BPS model by including certain additional terms of the full Skyrme model does not spoil the respective ansatz, leading to an ordinary differential equation for the profile of the Skymion, for any value of the topological charge. This allows for an almost analytical description of the properties of Skyrmions in this model. In particular, we analytically study the breaking and restoration of the BPS property. Finally, we provide an explanation of the success of the rational map ansatz.

Roper resonances and quasi-normal modes of Skyrmions

Radial vibrations of charge one hedgehog Skyrmions in the full Skyrme model are analysed. We investigate how the properties of the lowest resonance modes (quasi normal modes) - their frequencies and widths - depend on the form of the potential (value of the pion mass as well as the addition of further potentials) and on the inclusion of the sextic term. Then we consider the inverse problem, where certain values for the frequencies and widths are imposed, and the field theoretic Skyrme model potential giving rise to them is reconstructed. This latter method allows to reproduce the physical Roper resonances, as well as further physical properties of nucleons, with high precision.

Radial velocity measurements and orbit determination of eight single-lined spectroscopic binary systems

Since early 2015 a new radial velocity monitoring campaign is going on at the University Observatory Jena. The aim of this project is to obtain current radial velocity measurements of selected single-lined spectroscopic binary systems, to redetermine and/or constrain their orbital solutions. In this paper we characterize the properties of the target sample of the project, describe the spectroscopic observations, the data-reduction and analysis and present the first results of the project, taken with the fiber-linked astronomical spectrograph FLECHAS. We present 391 radial velocity measurements of eight spectroscopic binaries, which were taken within an epoch difference of 1.6 years. These radial velocities were used to determine the spectroscopic orbital elements of the observed binary systems, which exhibit orbital periods in the range between nearly one up to several dozens of days. We could constrain the orbital solutions of seven of these binary systems, and redetermine the orbital solution of phi Dra, whose orbit exhibits >4 times longer orbital period and is more eccentric than given in the 9th Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits.

Gauged BPS baby Skyrmions with quantised magnetic flux

A new type of gauged BPS baby Skyrme model is presented, where the derivative term is just the Schroers current (i.e., gauge invariant and conserved version of the topological current) squared. This class of models has a topological bound saturated for solutions of the pertinent Bogomolnyi equations supplemented by a so-called superpotential equation. In contrast to the gauged BPS baby Skyrme models considered previously, the superpotential equation is linear and, hence, completely solvable. Furthermore, the magnetic flux is quantized in units of $2π$, which allows, in principle, to define this theory on a compact manifold without boundary, unlike all gauged baby Skyrme models considered so far.

The volume of a vortex and the Bradlow bound

We demonstrate that the geometric volume of a soliton coincides with the thermodynamical volume also for field theories with higher-dimensional vacuum manifolds (e.g., for gauged scalar field theories supporting vortices or monopoles). We apply this observation to understand Bradlow type bounds for general abelian gauge theories supporting vortices. In the case of SDiff BPS models (being examples of perfect fluid models) we show that the geometric "volume" (area) of the vortex, which is base-space independent, is exactly equal to the Bradlow volume (a minimal volume for which a BPS soliton solution exists). This can be finite for compactons or infinite for infinitely extended solitons (in flat Minkowski space-time).

BPS submodels of the Skyrme model

We show that the standard Skyrme model without pion mass term can be expressed as a sum of two BPS submodels, i.e., of two models whose static field equations, independently, can be reduced to first order equations. Further, these first order (BPS) equations have nontrivial solutions, at least locally. These two submodels, however, cannot have common solutions. Our findings also shed some light on the rational map approximation. Finally, we consider certain generalisations of the BPS submodels.

Hairy black holes in the general Skyrme model

We study the existence of hairy black holes in the generalized Einstein-Skyrme model. It is proven that in the BPS model limit there are no hairy black hole solutions, although the model admits gravitating (and flat space) solitons. Furthermore, we find strong evidence that a necessary condition for the existence of black holes with Skyrmionic hair is the inclusion of the Skyrme term $\mathcal{L}_4$. As an example, we show that there are no hairy black holes in the $\mathcal{L}_2+\mathcal{L}_6+\mathcal{L}_0$ model and present a new kind of black hole solutions with compact Skyrmion hair in the $\mathcal{L}_4+\mathcal{L}_6+\mathcal{L}_0$ model.
