The strong coupling constant: State of the art and the decade ahead

Theoretical predictions for particle production cross sections and decays at colliders rely heavily on perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, expressed as an expansion in powers of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. The current $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ uncertainty of the QCD coupling evaluated at the reference Z boson mass, $\alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1179 \pm 0.0009$, is one of the limiting factors to more precisely describe multiple processes at current and future colliders. A reduction of this uncertainty is thus a prerequisite to perform precision tests of the Standard Model as well as searches for new physics. This report provides a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art, challenges, and prospects in the experimental and theoretical study of the strong coupling. The current $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ world average is derived from a combination of seven categories of observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $\tau$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions fits, (iv) electroweak boson decays, hadronic final-states in (v) $e^+e^-$, (vi) e-p, and (vii) p-p collisions, and (viii) quarkonia decays and masses. We review the current status of each of these seven $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ extraction methods, discuss novel $\alpha_s$ determinations, and examine the averaging method used to obtain the world-average value. Each of the methods discussed provides a ``wish list'' of experimental and theoretical developments required in order to achieve the goal of a per-mille precision on $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ within the next decade.

Calculation of the pion-photon transition form factor using dispersion relations and renormalization-group summation

We consider the lightcone sum-rule description of the pion-photon transition form factor, based on dispersion relations, in combination with the renormalization group of QCD, in terms of the formal solution of the Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution equation, and show that the emerging scheme amounts to a certain version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory (FAPT). In order to ensure the correct asymptotic behavior of the considered physical quantity, this modified FAPT version has to be supplemented by process-specific boundary conditions---in contrast to the standard one. However, it provides the advantage of significantly improving the inclusion of radiative corrections in the low-momentum regime of QCD perturbation theory using renormalization-group summation.

Form factor $π^0 γ^* γ$ in lightcone sum rules combined with renormalization-group summation vs experimental data

We consider the lightcone sum-rule (LCSR) description of the pion-photon transition form factor in combination with the renormalization group of QCD. The emerging scheme represents a certain version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory and significantly extends the applicability domain of perturbation theory towards lower momenta $Q^2\lesssim 1$ GeV$^2$. We show that the predictions calculated herewith agree very well with the released preliminary data of the BESIII experiment, which have very small errors just in this region, while the agreement with other data at higher $Q^2$ is compatible with the LCSR predictions obtained recently by one of us using fixed-order perturbation theory.

Bjorken sum rule in QCD with analytic coupling

We present details of study of the Bjorken polarized sum rule carried out recently in [1] within the range of energies where the data were collected by JLAB collaboration, 0.05 GeV2 < Q2 < 3 GeV2. Three approaches to QCD with analytic (holomorphic) coupling are considered: Analytic Perturbation Theory (APT), Two-delta analytic QCD, and Three-delta lattice-motivated analytic QCD in the three-loop and four-loop MiniMOM schemes. The new frameworks with respective couplings give results which agree well with the experimental data for 0.5 GeV2 < Q2 < 3GeV2 already when only one higher-twist term is taken into account.

Web-based tools for the analysis of TAOS data and much more

We suggest a new web-based approach for browsing and visualizing data produced by a network of telescopes, such as those of the ongoing TAOS and the forthcoming TAOS II projects. We propose a modern client-side technology and we present two examples based on two software packages developed for different kinds of server- side database approaches. In spite our examples are specific for the browsing of TAOS light curves, the software is coded in a way to be suitable for the use in several types of astronomical projects.

Automated differential photometry of TAOS data: preliminary analysis

A preliminary data analysis of the stellar light curves obtained by the robotic telescopes of the TAOS project is presented. We selected a data run relative to one of the stellar fields observed by three of the four TAOS telescopes, and we investigate the common trend and the correlation between the light curves. We propose two ways to remove these trends and show the preliminary results. A project aimed at flagging interesting behaviors, such as stellar variability, and to set up an automated follow-up with the San Pedro Mártir Facilities is on the way.
