De Sitter Special Relativity as a Possible Reason for Conformal Symmetry and Confinement in QCD

Conformal symmetry and color confinement in the infrared regime of QCD are interpreted by means of a conjectured deSitter $dS_4$ geometry of the internal space-time of hadrons, an assumption inspired by the hypothesis on deSitter special relativity. Within such a scenario, the interactions involving the virtual gluon and constituent quark degrees of freedom of hadrons are deduced from the Green functions of Laplace operators on the $dS_4$ geodesics. Then the conformal symmetry of QCD emerges as a direct consequence of the conformal symmetry of the $dS_4$ space-time, while the color confinement, understood as colorlessness of hadrons, appears as a consequence of the inevitable charge neutrality of the unique closed space-like manifold, the three dimensional hyper-sphere $S^3$, on whose geodesics the hadron's constituents are conjectured to reside when near rest frame. Mesons are now modelled as quarkish color-anticolor dipoles, whose free quantum motions on the aforementioned $S^3$ geodesic are perturbed by a potential generated by a gluon--anti-gluon color dipole. The potential predicted presents itself as the color charge analogue to the "curved" Coulomb potential, i.e. to the electric potential that defines a consistent electrostatic theory on a hyper-spherical surface. The advantage of this method is that it allows to establish a direct relationship of the potential parameters to the fundamental constants of QCD. We apply the model to the description of the spectra of the $a_1$ and $f_1$ mesons, and the pion electric charge form factor, finding fair agreement with data.

Proton's Electromagnetic Form Factors from a Non-Power Confinement Potential

The electric-charge, and magnetic-dipole form factors of the proton are calculated from an underlying constituent quark picture of hadron structure based on a potential shaped after a cotangent function, which has the properties of being both conformally symmetric and color confining, finding adequate reproduction of a variety of related data.

Rotational symmetry and degeneracy: a cotangent-perturbed rigid rotator of unperturbed level multiplicity

We predict level degeneracy of the rotational type in diatomic molecules described by means of a cotangent-hindered rigid rotator. The problem is shown to be exactly solvable in terms of non-classical Romanovski polynomials. The energies of such a system are linear combinations of t(t+1) and 1/[t(t+1)+1/4] terms with the non-negative integer principal quantum number t=n+|/bar{m}| being the sum of the degree n of the polynomials and the absolute value, |/bar{m}|, of the square root of the separation constant between the polar and azimuthal motions. The latter obeys, with respect to t, the same branching rule, |/bar{m}|=0,1,..., t, as does the magnetic quantum number with respect to the angular momentum, l, and, in this fashion, the t quantum number presents itself indistinguishable from l. In effect, the spectrum of the hindered rotator has the same (2t+1)-fold level multiplicity as the unperturbed one. For small t values, the wave functions and excitation energies of the perturbed rotator differ from the ordinary spherical harmonics, and the l(l+1) law, respectively, while approaching them asymptotically with increasing t. In this fashion the breaking of the rotational symmetry at the level of the representation functions is opaqued by the level degeneracy. The model provides a tool for the description of rotational bands with anomalously large gaps between the ground state and its first excitation.

On the exact solubility in momentum space of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential

The Schrodinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential in flat three dimensional Euclidean space, E3, and its exact solutions are shown to be also exactly transformable to momentum space, though the resulting equation is purely algebraic and can not be cast into the canonical form of an integral Lippmann-Schwinger equation. This is because the cotangent function does not allow for an exact Fourier transform in E3. In addition we recall, that the above potential can be also viewed as an angular function of the second polar angle parametrizing the three dimensional spherical surface, S3, of a constant radius, in which case the cotangent function would allow for an exact integral transform to momentum space. On that basis, we obtain a momentum space Lippmann-Schwinger-type equation, though the corresponding wavefunctions have to be obtained numerically.

Manifestation of Conformal Symmetry in the Light Flavor Baryon Sector

On the AdS_5 cone, conformally compactified to R^1xS^3, a quark-diquark model of light flavor baryons is developed. The system on this manifold is decribed in terms of a scalar conformal equation, gauged by the field of a D3 brane whose transversal dimensions have been conformally warpped over R^1xS^3. Such a system does not result exactly conformally invariant because the gauge potential slightly modifies the conformal centrifugal barrier of the free geodesic motion. Thanks to this, the model describes the correct mass ordering in the P11-S11 pairs through the N spectrum as a combined effect of conformal symmetry breaking, on the one side, and a parity change of the diquark from a scalar at low masses, to a pseudoscalar at higher masses, on the other. We calculate the number of resonances with masses below 2500 MeV needed for the completeness of the above scheme and find a total of 32 "missing" nucleon and Delta states. Their absence or presence in the respective spectra relates to the degree to which conformal symmetry is realized in the lightest flavor sector. The scheme also allows for the prediction of the dressing function of an effective instantaneous gluon propagator from the Fourier transform of the gauge potential. We find a dressing function that is finite in the infrared and tends to zero at infinity.

Conformal symmetry and light flavor baryon spectra

The degeneracy among parity pairs systematically observed in the N and Delta spectra is interpreted to hint on a possible conformal symmetry realization in the light flavor baryon sector in line with AdS_5/CFT_4. The case is made by showing that all the observed N and Delta resonances with masses below 2500 MeV distribute fairly well each over the first levels of a unitary representation of the conformal group, a representation that covers the spectrum of a quark-diquark system, placed directly on the AdS_5 cone, conformally compactified to R^1*S^3. The free geodesic motion on the S^3 manifold is described by means of the scalar conformal equation there, which is of the Klein-Gordon type. The equation is then gauged by the "curved" Coulomb potential that has the form of a cotangent function. Conformal symmetry is not exact, this because the gauge potential slightly modifies the conformal centrifugal barrier of the free geodesic motion. Thanks to this, the degeneracy between P11-S11 pairs from same level is relaxed, while the remaining states belonging to same level remain practically degenerate. The model describes the correct mass ordering in the P11-S11 pairs through the nucleon spectrum as a combined effect of the above conformal symmetry breaking, on the one side, and a parity change of the diquark from a scalar at low masses, to a pseudoscalar at higher masses, on the other. The quality of the wave functions is illustrated by calculations of realistic mean-square charge radii and electric charge form-factors on the examples of the proton, and the protonic P11(1440), and S11(1535) resonances. The scheme also allows for a prediction of the dressing function of an effective instantaneous gluon propagator from the Fourier transform of the gauge potential. We find a dressing function that is finite in the infrared and tends to zero at infinity.

Baryons from quarks in curved space and deconfinement

Detailed account is given of the fact that the Cornell potential predicted by Lattice QCD and its exactly solvable trigonometric extension recently reported by us can be viewed as the respective approximate and exact counterparts on a curved space to an 1/r flat space potential. The "curved" potential describes a confinement phenomenon because it is of infinite depth and has only bound states. It furthermore has the remarkable property of preserving both the SO(4) and SO(2,1) symmetries of the ordinary 1/r potential. We first make the case that this particular geometric version on confinement provides a remarkably adequate description of both nucleon and Delta spectra and the proton mean square charge radius as well, and suggests an intriguing venue toward quark deconfinement as shut-down of the curvature considered as temperature dependent. Next we observe that the SO(2,1) symmetry of the "curved" potential allows to place it within the context of AdS_5/CFT correspondence and to establish in this manner the algbraic link of the the latter to QCD potentiology.

Trigonometric quark confinement potential of QCD traits

We make the case that the Coulomb- plus linear quark confinement potential predicted by lattice QCD is an approximation to the exactly solvable trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential that has the property to interpolate between the Coulomb- and the infinite wells. We test the predictive power of this potential in the description of the nucleon (considered as a quark-diquark system) and provide analytic expressions for its mass spectrum and the proton electric form factor. We compare the results obtained in this fashion to data and find quite good agreement. We obtain an effective gluon propagator in closed form as the Fourier transform of the potential under investigation.

Angular Momentum Dependent Quark Potential of QCD Traits and Dynamical O(4) Symmetry

A common quark potential that captures the essential traits of the QCD quark-gluon dynamics is expected to (i) interpolate between a Coulomb-like potential (associated with one-gluon exchange) and the infinite wall potential (associated with trapped but asymptotically free quarks), (ii) reproduce in the intermediary region the linear confinement potential (associated with multi-gluon self-interactions) as established by lattice QCD calculations of hadron properties. We first show that the exactly soluble trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential possesses all these properties. Next we observe that this potential, once interpreted as angular momentum dependent, acquires a dynamical O(4) symmetry and reproduces exactly quantum numbers and level splittings of the non-strange baryon spectra in the SU(2)_I* O(4) classification scheme according to which baryons cling on to multi-spin parity clusters of the type (K/2,K/2)*[(1/2,0) + (0, 1/2)], whose relativistic image is ψ_{μ_{1}...μ_{K}}. Finally, we bring exact energies and wave functions of the levels within the above potential and thus put it on equal algebraic footing with such common potentials of wide spread as are the harmonic-oscillator- and the Coulomb potentials.

The Quantum Mechanics Problem of the Schroedinger Equation with the Trigonometric Rosen-Morse Potential

We present the quantum mechanics problem of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential. This potential is of possible interest to quark physics in so far as it captures the essentials of the QCD quark-gluon dynamics and (i) interpolates between a Coulomb-like potential (associated with one-gluon exchange) and the infinite wall potential (associated with asymptotic freedom), (ii) reproduces in the intermediary region the linear confinement potential (associated with multi-gluon self-interactions) as established by lattice QCD calculations of hadron properties. Moreover, its exact real solutions given here display a new class of real orthogonal polynomials and thereby interesting mathematical entities in their own.

The Trigonometric Rosen-Morse Potential in the Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and its Exact Solutions

The analytic solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation for the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential reported in the literature rely upon the Jacobi polynomials with complex indices and complex arguments. We first draw attention to the fact that the complex Jacobi polynomials have non-trivial orthogonality properties which make them uncomfortable for physics applications. Instead we here solve above equation in terms of real orthogonal polynomials. The new solutions are used in the construction of the quantum-mechanic superpotential.
