Search for Charged Strange Quark Matter Produced in 11.5 A GeV/c Au + Pb Collisions

We present results of a search for strange quark matter (strangelets) in 11.5 A GeV/c Au+Pb collisions from the 1994 and 1995 runs of experiment E864 at Brookhaven's AGS. We observe no strangelet candidates and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of approximately 3x10**-8 per 10% central interaction for the production of |Z|=1 and |Z|=2 strangelets over a large mass range and with metastable lifetimes of about 50 ns or more. These results place constraints primarily on quark-gluon plasma based production models for strangelets.

Neutron--Antineutron Oscillations at the Surface of Nuclei

We discuss some aspects of possible neutron--antineutron oscillations in nuclei. The phenomenon occurs mostly at the surface of nuclei, and hence {\sl i)} is not very sensitive to medium corrections and {\sl ii)} makes use of the antinucleon-nucleus interaction in a region probed by experiments at CERN.

Modeling Cluster Production at the AGS

Deuteron coalescence, during relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, is carried out in a model incorporating a minimal quantal treatment of the formation of the cluster from its individual nucleons by evaluating the overlap of intial cascading nucleon wave packets with the final deuteron wave function. In one approach the nucleon and deuteron center of mass wave packet sizes are estimated dynamically for each coalescing pair using its past light-cone history in the underlying cascade, a procedure which yields a parameter free determination of the cluster yield. A modified version employing a global estimate of the deuteron formation probability, is identical to a general implementation of the Wigner function formalism but can differ from the most frequent realisation of the latter. Comparison is made both with the extensive existing E802 data for Si+Au at 14.6 GeV/c and with the Wigner formalism. A globally consistent picture of the Si+Au measurements is achieved. In light of the deuteron's evident fragility, information obtained from this analysis may be useful in establishing freeze-out volumes and help in heralding the presence of high-density phenomena in a baryon-rich environment.

Limits on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time from the stability of nuclei

We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free--space neutron--antineutron oscillation time $τ_{n\bar n}$ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate $τ_{n\bar n}>2(T_0/Γ)^{1/2}$, where $T_0$ is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and $Γ\sim 100$ MeV is a typical antineutron-nucleus annihilation width.

Widths of $Ξ$ Hypernuclear States

The $Λ$ and neutron decay widths of $Ξ$ hypernuclear states, based on calculated $ΞN \to \lala$ mixing amplitudes, are estimated. The widths which result from using the Nijmegen Model D interaction are sufficiently small, of order 1.5 MeV, that experiments to observe $Ξ$ hypernuclear states using the $(K^-,K^+)$ reaction may be feasible.
