Dirac zero-modes in compact U(1) gauge theory

We study properties of the zero and near-zero eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator in compact U(1) gauge theory. In the confinement phase the exact zero-modes are localized as found by studying the values of the inverse participation ratio and other features. Non-zero-eigenmodes are less localized in the confinement phase. In the Coulomb phase no zero-modes are observed and the eigenmodes show no localization at all.

Masses of excited baryons from chirally improved quenched lattice QCD

Whereas ground state spectroscopy for quenched QCD is well understood, it is still a challenge to obtain results for excited hadron states. In our study we present results from a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. In order to be able to approach physical quark masses we work with the chirally improved Dirac operator, i.e., approximate Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. Since these are computationally expensive we restrict ourselves to a few quark sources. We use Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths and combine them to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. This allows us to identify the Roper state and other excited baryons, also in the strange sector.

Excited hadrons from improved interpolating fields

The calculation of quark propagators for Ginsparg-Wilson-type Dirac operators is costly and thus limited to a few different sources. We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We study the Roper state and excited rho and pion mesons.

Spatially improved operators for excited hadrons on the lattice

We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators that can be used for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We use the variational method to determine those linear combinations of operators that have optimal overlap with ground and excited states. The details of the new approach are discussed and we demonstrate the power of the method using examples from quenched baryon and meson spectroscopy. In particular we study the Roper state and rho(1450) and discuss some physical implications of our tests.

Excited nucleons with chirally improved fermions

We study positive and negative parity nucleons on the lattice using the chirally improved lattice Dirac operator. Our analysis is based on a set of three operators chi_i with the nucleon quantum numbers but in different representations of the chiral group and with different diquark content. We use a variational method to separate ground state and excited states and determine the mixing coefficients for the optimal nucleon operators in terms of the chi_i. We clearly identify the negative parity resonances N(1535) and N(1650) and their masses agree well with experimental data. The mass of the observed excited positive parity state is too high to be interpreted as the Roper state. Our results for the mixing coefficients indicate that chiral symmetry is important for N(1535) and N(1650) states. We confront our data for the mixing coefficients with quark models and provide insights into the physics of the nucleon system and the nature of strong decays.

Quenched spectroscopy with fixed-point and chirally improved fermions

We present results from quenched spectroscopy calculations with the parametrized fixed-point and the chirally improved Dirac operators. Both these operators are approximate solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and have good chiral properties. This allows us to work at small quark masses and we explore pseudoscalar-mass to vector-mass ratios down to 0.28. We discuss meson and baryon masses, their scaling properties, finite volume effects and compare our results with recent large scale simulations. We find that the size of quenching artifacts of the masses is strongly correlated with their experimentally observed widths and that the gauge and hadronic scales are consistent.

Quenched QCD with fixed-point and chirally improved fermion

In this contribution we present results from quenched QCD simulations with the parameterized fixed-point (FP) and the chirally improved (CI) Dirac operator. Both these operators are approximate solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and have good chiral properties. We focus our discussion on observables sensitive to chirality. In particular we explore pion masses down to 210 MeV in light hadron spectroscopy, quenched chiral logs, the pion decay constant and the pion scattering length. We discuss finite volume effects, scaling properties of the FP and CI operators and performance issues in their numerical implementation.

Improving the Dirac Operator in Lattice QCD

Recently various new concepts for the construction of Dirac operators in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) have been introduced. These operators satisfy the so-called Ginsparg-Wilson condition (GWC), thus obeying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and violating chiral symmetry only in a modest and local form. Here we present studies in 4-d for SU(3) gauge configurations with non-trivial topological content. We study the flow of eigenvalues and we compare the numerical stability and efficiency of a recently suggested chirally improved operator with that of others in this respect.

Comparing lattice Dirac operators in smooth instanton backgrounds

We compare the behavior of different lattice Dirac operators in gauge backgrounds which are lattice discretizations of a classical instanton. In particular we analyze the standard Wilson operator, a chirally improved Dirac operator and the overlap operators constructed from these two operators. We discuss the flow of real eigenvalues as a function of the instanton size. An analysis of the eigenvectors shows that overlap fermions with the Wilson operator as input operator have difficulties with reproducing the continuum zero mode already for moderately small instantons. This problem is greatly reduced when using the chirally improved operator for the overlap projection.

Chirally improved Dirac operators: Studying the sensitivity to topological excitations for zero and finite temperature

We discuss the construction and properties of an approximate solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation, the so-called chirally improved lattice Dirac operator. In particular we study the behavior of its eigenmodes in smooth instanton backgrounds as well as for thermalized gauge configurations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. We compare with results from other Dirac operators including the overlap operator. The results support the picture of chiral symmetry breaking being closely related to instantons.

The zeros of the QCD partition function

We establish a relationship between the zeros of the partition function in the complex mass plane and the spectral properties of the Dirac operator in QCD. This relation is derived within the context of chiral Random Matrix Theory and applies to QCD when chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken. Further, we introduce and examine the concept of normal modes in chiral spectra. Using this formalism we study the consequences of a finite Thouless energy for the zeros of the partition function. This leads to the demonstration that certain features of the QCD partition function are universal.

Bound states for Overlap and Fixed Point Actions close to the chiral limit

We study the overlap and the fixed point Dirac operators for massive fermions in the two-flavor lattice Schwinger model. The masses of the triplet (pion) and singlet (eta) bound states are determined down to small fermion masses and the mass dependence is compared with various continuum model approximations. Near the chiral limit, at very small fermion masses the fixed point operator has stability problems, which in this study are dominated by finite size effects,

Approximate Ginsparg-Wilson fermions: A first test

We construct a 4-d lattice Dirac operator D using a systematical expansion in terms of simple operators on the lattice. The Ginsparg-Wilson equation turns into a system of coupled equations for the expansion coefficients of D. We solve these equations for a finite parametrization of D and find an approximate solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation. We analyze the spectral properties of our D for various ensembles of quenched SU(3) configurations. Improving the gauge field action considerably improves the spectral properties of our D.

Microscopic Universality and the Chiral Phase Transition in two Flavor QCD

We re-analyze data from available finite-temperature QCD simulations near the chiral transition, with the help of Chiral Random Matrix Theory (chRMT). Statistical properties of the lowest-lying eigenvalues of the staggered Dirac operator for SU(3) lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions are examined. We consider temperatures below, near, and above the critical temperature $T_c$ for the chiral phase transition. Below and above $T_c$ the statistics are in agreement with the exact analytical predictions in the microscopic scaling regime. Above $T_c$ we observe a gap in the spectral density and a distribution compatible with the Airy distribution. Near $T_c$ the eigenvalue correlations appear inconsistent with chRMT.

Effects of Topology in the Dirac Spectrum of Staggered Fermions

We compare the lower edge spectral fluctuations of the staggered lattice Dirac operator for the Schwinger model with the predictions of chiral Random Matrix Theory (chRMT). We verify their range of applicability, checking in particular the role of non-trivial topological sectors and the flavor symmetry of the staggered fermions for finite lattice spacing. Approaching the continuum limit we indeed find clear signals for topological modes in the eigenvalue spectrum. These findings indicate problems in the verification of the chRMT predictions.
