Intricacies of Frustrated Magnetism in the Kondo Metal YbAgGe

The combination of localized magnetic moments, their frustration and interaction with itinerant electrons is a key challenge of condensed matter physics. Frustrated magnetic interactions promote degenerate ground states with enhanced fluctuations, a topic that is predominantly studied in magnetic insulators. The coupling between itinerant and localized electrons in metals add complexity to the problem, and presently formulated only for extreme cases in which the itinerant electrons mediate exchange between localized spins (RKKY interaction) or suppress the formation of magnetic moments (Kondo screening). Here, we report an in-depth experimental study of the distorted Kagome metal YbAgGe, unravelling the open questions of how frustration, localized magnetism and itinerant electrons are intertwined in frustrated Kondo metals. We find that coupled itinerant and localized electrons give rise to dynamic magnetic correlations below T* ~ 20 K. At lower temperature, frustrated magnetic interactions establish anisotropic magnetic short-range correlations that culminate into antiferromagnetic long-range order below TN = 0.68 K with a significantly reduced modulated magnetic moment. We show that local moment Hamiltonians can yield limited understanding of the microscopic behaviour in frustrated metals, and prompt the extension of more sophisticated model Hamiltonians incorporating itinerant effects.

Magnetic ground state and perturbations of the distorted kagome Ising metal TmAgGe

We present the magnetic orders and excitations of the distorted kagome intermetallic magnet TmAgGe. Using neutron single crystal diffraction we identify the propagation vectors $\bf{k}$ = (1/2 0 0) and $\bf{k}$ = (0 0 0) and determine the magnetic structures of the zero-field and magnetic field-induced phases for $H$ along the $a$ and [-1 1 0] crystal directions. We determine the experimental magnetic field-temperature ($H$, $T$)-phase diagram and reproduce it by Monte-Carlo simulations of an effective spin exchange Hamiltonian for one distorted kagome layer. Our model includes a strong axial single-ion anisotropy and significantly smaller exchange couplings which span up to the third-nearest neighbours within the layer. Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements reveal an almost flat, only weakly dispersive mode around 7 meV that we use alongside bulk magnetization data to deduce the crystal-electric field (CEF) scheme for the Tm$^{3+}$ ions. Random phase approximation (RPA) calculations based on the determined CEF wave functions of the two lowest quasi-doublets enable an estimation of the interlayer coupling that is compatible with the experimental INS spectra. No evidence for low-energy spin waves associated to the magnetic order was found, which is consistent with the strongly Ising nature of the ground state.

Intriguing magnetism of the topological kagome magnet TbMn_6Sn_6

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the transition-metal-based kagome magnet TbMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ using muon spin rotation, combined with local field analysis and neutron diffraction. Our results show that the system exhibits an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure $P6/mm'm'$ (comprised by Tb and Mn moments) with slow magnetic fluctuations below $T_{\rm C2}$~=~320~K. These fluctuations exhibit a slowing down below $T_{\rm C1}^{*}$~${\simeq}$~120~K, and we see the formation of static patches with ideal out-of-plane order below $T_{\rm C1}$~${\simeq}$~20~K which grow in a volume with decreasing temperature. The appearance of the static patches has a similar onset to the interesting phenomenon such as spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap and topological edge states. We further show that the temperature evolution of the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is strongly influenced by the low temperature magnetic crossover. Our presented experimental results show that the onset of the topological electronic properties tied to the Dirac band is promoted only by true static out-of-plane ferrimagnetic order in TbMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and is washed out by the slow magnetic fluctuations above $T_{\rm C1}$~${\simeq}$~20~K. Remarkably, hydrostatic pressure of 2.1 GPa stabilises static out-of-plane topological ferrimagnetic ground state in the whole volume of the sample. Therefore the exciting perspective arises of a magnetic system in which the topological response can be controlled, and thus explored, over a wide range of parameters.

Exact diagonalization study of the Hubbard-parametrized four-spin ring exchange model on a square lattice

We have used exact numerical diagonalization to study the excitation spectrum and the dynamic spin correlations in the $s=1/2$ next-next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice, with additional 4-spin ring exchange from higher order terms in the Hubbard expansion. We have varied the ratio between Hubbard model parameters, $t/U$, to obtain different relative strengths of the exchange parameters, while keeping electrons localized. The Hubbard model parameters have been parametrized via an effective ring exchange coupling, $J_r$, which have been varied between 0$J$ and 1.5$J$. We find that ring exchange induces a quantum phase transition from the $(π, π)$ ordered Neèl state to a $(π/2, π/2)$ ordered state. This quantum critical point is reduced by quantum fluctuations from its mean field value of $J_r/J = 2$ to a value of $\sim 1.1$. At the quantum critical point, the dynamical correlation function shows a pseudo-continuum at $q$-values between the two competing ordering vectors.
