Studies of $\rm ^{144,148}Sm+\alpha$ potential for the $p$-process nucleosynthesis

Nucleosynthesis reaction networks leading to $p$-nuclei involve a combination of different types of photodisintegration and capture reactions, as well as $\beta^+$ decays or electron captures. Photodisintegration reactions involving $\alpha$ particles present a particular interest as they serve as branching points of the reaction networks. The cross sections of these reactions depend crucially on the $\alpha$-nucleus interaction. The $\alpha$ optical model potential (AOMP) is determined mostly by means of experimental differential elastic scattering distributions. Several previous studies have focused on the case of $\rm ^{144}Sm$, an intriguing $p$-nucleus that is semi-magic with 82 neutrons. This work presents new experimental data on $\alpha$ elastic and inelastic scattering on $\rm ^{148}Sm$, its closest stable isotope. Isotopic effects on the description of the AOMP are studied, as well as their consequences on the prediction of $\alpha$-induced reaction cross sections at astrophysical energies. It is shown that the isotopic ratio for $(\alpha,\gamma)$ cross sections can be multiplied up to a factor of two when these effects are included.

Role of interfaces in the biased composition of TbFe(Co) thin films

Ferrimagnetic TbFe or TbFeCo amorphous alloy thin films have been grown by co-evaporation in ultra-high vacuum. They exhibit an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy up to their Curie temperature with a nucleation and propagation reversal mechanism suitable for current induced domain wall motion. Rutherford back scattering experiments confirmed a fine control of the Tb depth-integrated composition within the evaporation process. However, a large set of experimental techniques were used to evidence an interface related contribution in such thin films as compared to much thicker samples. In particular, scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments evidence a depth dependent composition and perturbed top and bottom interfaces with preferential oxidation and diffusion of terbium. Despite of that, amorphous and homogeneous alloy film remains in a bulk-like part. The composition of that bulk-like part of the magnetic layer, labeled as effective composition, is biased when compared with the depth-integrated composition. The magnetic properties of the film are mostly dictated by this effective composition, which we show changes with different top and bottom interfaces.

Tailoring strain in SrTiO3 compound by low energy He+ irradiation

The ability to generate a change of the lattice parameter in a near-surface layer of a controllable thickness by ion implantation of strontium titanate is reported here using low energy He+ ions. The induced strain follows a distribution within a typical near-surface layer of 200 nm as obtained from structural analysis. Due to clamping effect from the underlying layer, only perpendicular expansion is observed. Maximum distortions up to 5-7% are obtained with no evidence of amorphisation at fluences of 1E16 He+ ions/cm2 and ion energies in the range 10-30 keV.

Accurate mass measurements of $^{26}$Ne, $^{26-30}$Na, $^{29-33}$Mg performed with the {\sc Mistral} spectrometer

The minuteness of the nuclear binding energy requires that mass measurements be highly precise and accurate. Here we report on new measurements $^{29-33}$Mg and $^{26}$Na performed with the {\sc Mistral} mass spectrometer at {\sc Cern}'s {\sc Isolde} facility. Since mass measurements are prone to systematic errors, considerable effort has been devoted to their evaluation and elimination in order to achieve accuracy and not only precision. We have therefore conducted a campaign of measurements for calibration and error evaluation. As a result, we now have a satisfactory description of the {\sc Mistral} calibration laws and error budget. We have applied our new understanding to previous measurements of $^{26}$Ne, $^{26-30}$Na and $^{29,32}$Mg for which re-evaluated values are reported.
