kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production

We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the comparison of our findings to recent related work.

Photon Pair Production with Soft Gluon Resummation in Hadronic Interactions

The production rate and kinematic distributions of isolated photon pairs produced in hadron interactions are studied. The effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission to the scattering subprocesses q-qbar, qg, and gg to gamma gamma X are resummed with the Collins-Soper-Sterman soft gluon resummation formalism. The effects of fragmentation photons from qg to gamma q, followed by q to gamma X, are also studied. The results are compared with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A prediction of the production rate and kinematic distributions of the diphoton pair in proton-nucleon reactions is also presented.

Comment on the $W + 1$ jet to $W + 0$ jets ratio

To offer a possible resolution to the apparent discrepancy between the experimental and the theoretical values of the $W + 1$ jet to $W + 0$ jets ratio reported by the \D0 group, we examine the effects of the multiple soft gluon radiation on the $W$ boson production at the Tevatron. Based on the calculation of the $W$ boson transverse momentum ($Q_T$) distribution in the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism, we conclude that the effect of the soft gluon radiation is important in the region of $Q_T < 50$ GeV, and it can be better tested by a more inclusive observable $R_{CSS}(Q_T^{\min})\equiv \frac{σ(Q_T>Q_T^{\min})}{σ_{Total}}$.

Soft gluon effects on lepton pairs at hadron colliders

With a large integrated luminosity expected at the Tevatron, a next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation is no longer sufficient to describe the data which yield the precision measurement of $M_W$, etc. Thus, we extend the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism, for on-shell vector boson production, to correctly include the effects of the polarization and the width of the vector boson to the distributions of the decay leptons. We show how to test the rich dynamics of the QCD multiple soft gluon radiation, for example, by measuring the ratio $R_{CSS} \equiv \frac{σ(Q_T>Q_T^{\min})}{σ_{Total}}$. ($Q_T$ is the transverse momentum of the vector boson.) We conclude that both the total rates and the distributions of the lepton charge asymmetry predicted by the resummed and the NLO calculations are different when kinematic cuts are applied.

Testing Multiple Gluon Dynamics at the Tevatron

We propose the measurement of the ratio $R_{CSS}(Q_T^{\min}) \equiv \frac{σ(Q_T>Q_T^{\min})}{σ_{Total}}$ to study the effects of the multiple soft gluon radiation, predicted by QCD, on the transverse momentum ($Q_T$) distribution of the weak gauge bosons $W^{\pm }$ and $Z^0$ produced at the Tevatron. We compare the prediction of the extended Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism with the next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order calculations. We show that both the rich dynamics of the QCD multiple soft gluon radiation and the non-perturbative sector of QCD can be tested by measuring $R_{CSS}$.
