The skyrmion switch: turning magnetic skyrmion bubbles on and off with an electric field

Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are considered as potential information carriers for future spintronics memory and logic devices. Such applications will require the control of their local creation and annihilation, which involves so far solutions that are either energy consuming or difficult to integrate. Here we demonstrate the control of skyrmion bubbles nucleation and annihilation using electric field gating, an easily integrable and potentially energetically efficient solution. We present a detailed stability diagram of the skyrmion bubbles in a Pt/Co/oxide trilayer and show that their stability can be controlled via an applied electric field. An analytical bubble model, with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction imbedded in the domain wall energy, account for the observed electrical skyrmion switching effect. This allows us to unveil the origin of the electrical control of skyrmions stability and to show that both magnetic dipolar interaction and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction play an important role in the skyrmion bubble stabilization.

Tunability versus deviation sensitivity in a non-linear vortex oscillator

Frequency modulation experiments were performed on a spin torque vortex oscillator for a wide range of modulation frequency, up to 10 % of the oscillator frequency. A thorough analysis of the intermodulation products shows that the key parameter that describes these experiments is the deviation sensitivity, which is the dynamical frequency-current dependence. It differs significantly from the oscillator tunability discussed so far in the context of spin-transfer oscillators. The essential difference between these two concepts is related to the response time of the vortex oscillator, driven either in quasi-steady state or in a transient regime.

Parametric oscillator based on non-linear vortex dynamics in low resistance magnetic tunnel junctions

Radiofrequency vortex spin-transfer oscillators based on magnetic tunnel junctions with very low resistance area product were investigated. A high power of excitations has been obtained characterized by a power spectral density containing a very sharp peak at the fundamental frequency and a series of harmonics. The observed behaviour is ascribed to the combined effect of spin transfer torque and Oersted-Ampère field generated by the large applied dc-current. We furthermore show that the synchronization of a vortex oscillation by applying a ac bias current is mostly efficient when the external frequency is twice the oscillator fundamental frequency. This result is interpreted in terms of a parametric oscillator.

Spin-current vortices in current-perpendicular-to-plane nanoconstricted spin-valves

The charge and spin diffusion equations taking into account spin-flip and spin-transfer torque were numerically solved using a finite element method in complex non-collinear geometry with strongly inhomogeneous current flow. As an illustration, spin-dependent transport through a non-magnetic nanoconstriction separating two magnetic layers was investigated. Unexpected results such as vortices of spin-currents in the vicinity of the nanoconstriction were obtained. The angular variations of magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque are strongly influenced by the structure geometry.

Half-integer Shapiro steps at the 0-pi crossover of a ferromagnetic Josephson junction

We investigate the current-phase relation of S/F/S junctions near the crossover between the 0 and the pi ground states. We use Nb/CuNi/Nb junctions where this crossover is driven both by thickness and temperature. For a certain thickness a non-zero minimum of critical current is observed at the crossover temperature. We analyze this residual supercurrent by applying a high frequency excitation and observe the formation of half-integer Shapiro steps. We attribute these fractional steps to a doubling of the Josephson frequency due to a sin(2*phi) current-phase relation. This phase dependence is explained by the splitting of the energy levels in the ferromagnetic exchange field.

Andreev Reflection Enhanced Shot Noise in Mesoscopic SNS Junctions

Current noise is measured with a SQUID in low impedance and transparent Nb-Al-Nb j unctions of length comparable to the phase breaking length and much longer than the thermal length. The shot noise amplitude is compared with theoretical predictions of doubled shot noise in diffusive normal/superconductor (NS) junctions due to the Andreev reflections. We discuss the heat dissipation away from the normal part through the NS interfaces. A weak applied magnetic field reduces the amplitude of the 1/f noise by a factor of two, showing that even far from equilibrium the sample is in the mesoscopic regime.

SQUID based resistance bridge for shot noise measurement on low impedance samples

We present a resistance bridge which uses a SQUID to measure the shot noise in low impedance samples. The experimental requirements are high DC bias currents (typically 10mA) together with high AC sensitivity (pA/VHz). This system is used to investigate the shot noise in Superconductor/Normal/Superconductor junctions where Andreev reflection enhanced shot noise is expected. Because our setup has an intrinsic noise much smaller than the thermal noise of the resistance bridge at 4.2K, reliable results can be obtained on impedances out of the range of classical measurement schemes.
