Nucleon-nucleus optical potential in the particle-hole approach

Feshbach's projection formalism in the particle-hole model space leads to a microscopic description of scattering in terms of the many-body self-energy. To investigate the feasibility of this approach, an optical potential for O-16 is constructed starting from two previous calculations of the self-energy for this nucleus. The results reproduce the background phase shifts for positive parity waves and the resonances beyond the mean field. The latter can be computed microscopically for energies of astrophysical interest using Green's function theory.

Effect of kinematics on final state interactions in (e,e'p) reactions

Recent data from experiment E97-006 at TJNAF using the 12C(e,e'p) reaction at very large missing energies and momenta are compared to a calculation of two-step rescattering. A comparison between parallel and perpendicular kinematics suggests that the effects of final state interactions can be strongly reduced in the former case.

Self-consistent Green's function calculation of 16O at small missing energies

Calculations of the one-hole spectral function of 16O for small missing energies are reviewed. The self-consistent Green's function approach is employed together with the Faddeev equations technique in order to study the coupling of both particle-particle and particle-hole phonons to the single-particle motion. The results indicate that the characteristics of hole fragmentation are related to the low-lying states of 16O and an improvement of the description of this spectrum, beyond the random phase approximation, is required to understand the experimental strength distribution. A first calculation in this direction that accounts for two-phonon states is discussed.

Effects of Rescattering in (e,e'p) Reactions within a Semiclassical Model

The contribution of rescattering to final state interactions in (e,e'p) cross sections is studied for medium and high missing energies using a semiclassical model. This approach considers two-step processes that lead to the emission of both nucleons. The effects of nuclear transparency are accounted for in a Glauber inspired approach and the dispersion effects of the medium at low energies are included. It is found that rescattering is strongly reduced in parallel kinematics. At high missing energy and momenta, the distortion of the short-range correlated tail of the spectral function is dominated by a rearrangement of that strength itself. In perpendicular kinematics, a further enhancement of the experimental yield is due to strength that is originally in the mean field region. This contribution becomes negligible at large missing momenta.

3C 345: the historical light curve (1967-1990) from the digitized plates of the Asiago Observatory

In the frame of a large project to digitize the plate archives of the Italian and Vatican Astronomical Observatories, we have already performed the digitization of all available plates of the field of the quasar 3C345. The plates, approximately 100, were taken with the three telescopes of the Asiago Observatory (122 cm, 182 cm, 67/90 cm Schmidt Telescope) in the period from 1967 to 1990. We present here essentially new data, mostly in the B band, about the variability of 3C 345 and also of other four objects (3 quasars and the active galaxy NGC 6212) in the same field, in that period. Beyond the well known 3C 345 itself, also the other three quasars show variability, with a range of 2.0 mag for Q1 and Q2, 1 mag for Q3. The low level variability detected for the nucleus of NGC 6212 is more suspicious, and should be confirmed by linear detector data.

Space-to-ground quantum-communication using an optical ground station: a feasibility study

We have tested the experimental prerequisites for a Space-to-Ground quantum communication link between satellites and an optical ground station. The feasibility of our ideas is being assessed using the facilities of the ASI Matera Laser Ranging Observatory (MLRO). Specific emphasis is put on the necessary technological modifications of the existing infrastructure to achieve single photon reception from an orbiting satellite.

Study of the 16O(p,gamma) Reaction at Astrophysical Energies

The Feshbach theory of the optical potential naturally leads to a microscopic description of scattering in terms of the many-body self-energy. We consider a recent calculation of this quantity for 16O and study the possibility of applying it at astrophysical energies. The results obtained for the phase shifts and the 16O(p,γ) capture suggest that such studies are feasible but the calculations require some improvement geared to this specific task.

Effects of nuclear correlations on the $^{16}$O$(e,e'pN)$ reactions to discrete final states

Calculations of the $^{16}$O$(e,e'pN)$ cross sections to the ground state and first excited levels of the $^{14}$C and $^{14}$N nuclei are presented. The effects of nuclear fragmentation have been obtained in a self-consistent approach and are accounted for in the determination of the two-nucleon removal amplitudes. The Hilbert space is partitioned in order to compute the contribution of both long- and short-range effects in a separate way. Both the two-proton and the proton-neutron emission cross sections have been computed within the same models for the reaction mechanism and the contribution from nuclear structure, with the aim of better comparing the differences between the two physical processes. The $^{16}$O$(e,e'pp)$ reaction is found to be sensitive to short-range correlations, in agreement with previous results. The $^{16}$O$(e,e'pn)$ cross section to $1^+$ final states is dominated by the $Δ$ current and tensor correlations. For both reactions, the interplay between collective (long-range) effects and short-range and tensor correlations plays an important role. This suggests that the selectivity of $(e,e'pN)$ reactions to the final state can be used to probe correlations also beyond short-range effects.

Self-consistent Green's function method for nuclei and nuclear matter

Recent results obtained by applying the method of self-consistent Green's functions to nuclei and nuclear matter are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the description of experimental data obtained from the (e,e'p) and (e,e'2N) reactions that determine one and two-nucleon removal probabilities in nuclei since the corresponding amplitudes are directly related to the imaginary parts of the single-particle and two-particle propagators. For this reason and the fact that these amplitudes can now be calculated with the inclusion of all the relevant physical processes, it is useful to explore the efficacy of the method of self-consistent Green's functions in describing these experimental data. Results for both finite nuclei and nuclear matter are discussed with particular emphasis on clarifying the role of short-range correlations in determining various experimental quantities. The important role of long-range correlations in determining the structure of low-energy correlations is also documented. For a complete understanding of nuclear phenomena it is therefore essential to include both types of physical correlations. We demonstrate that recent experimental results for these reactions combined with the reported theoretical calculations yield a very clear understanding of the properties of {\em all} protons in the nucleus. We propose that this knowledge of the properties of constituent fermions in a correlated many-body system is a unique feature of nuclear physics.

Digitatio and Scientific Exploitation of the Italian and Vatican Astronomical Plate Archives

There is a widespread interest to digitize the precious information contained in the astronomical plate archives, both for the preservation of their content and for its fast distribution to all interested researchers in order to achieve their better scientific exploitation. This paper presents the first results of our large-scale project to digitize the archive of plates of the Italian Astronomical Observatories and of the Specola Vaticana. Similar systems, composed by commercial flat-bed retro-illuminated scanners plus dedicated personal computers and acquisition and analysis software, have been installed in all participating Institutes. Ad-hoc codes have been developed to acquire the data, to test the suitability of the machines to our scientific needs, and to reduce the digital data in order to extract the astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic content. Two more elements complete the overall project: the provision of high quality BVRI CCD sequences in selected fields with the Campo Imperatore telescopes, and the distribution of the digitized information to all interested researchers via the Web. The methods we have derived in the course of this project have been already applied successfully to plates taken by other Observatories, for instance at Byurakan and at Hamburg.

Rescattering Contributions to Final State Interactions in (e,e'p) Reactions at High (p_m,E_m)

The contribution of rescattering to final state interactions in the (e,e'p) cross section is studied using a semiclassical model. This approach considers a two-step process with the propagation of an intermediate nucleon and uses Glauber theory to account for the reduction of the experimental yield due to N--N scattering. This calculation has relevance for the analysis of data at high missing energies and in particular at the kinematics of the E97-006 experiment done at JLab. It is found that rescattering is strongly reduced in parallel kinematics and that the excitation of nucleon resonances is likely to give important contributions to the final state interactions in the correlated region. For heavy nuclei, further enhancement to the rescattering is expected to be generated from the strength in the mean field region.

Effects of nuclear fragmentation on single particle and collective motions at low energy

The Faddeev technique is employed to study the influence of both particle-particle and particle-hole phonons on the one-hole spectral function of 16O. The formalism includes the effects of nuclear fragmentation and accounts for collective excitations at a random phase approximation (RPA) level. The latter are subsequently summed to all orders by the Faddeev equations to obtain the nucleon self-energy. The results indicate that the characteristics of hole fragmentation are related to the low-lying states of 16O and an improvement of the description of this spectrum is required to understand the details of the experimental strength distribution. A first calculation to improve on this includes the mixing of two-phonon configuration with particle-hole ones. It is seen that this allows to understand the formation of excited states which cannot be described by the RPA approach.

Extension of the Random Phase Approximation including the self-consistent coupling to two-phonon contributions

A microscopic formalism is developed that includes the coupling to two particle-hole phonons in the particle-hole propagator by extending the dressed random phase approximation (DRPA) equation for a finite system. The resulting formalism is applied to study the low-lying excitation spectrum of 16O. It is observed that the coupling to two-phonon states at low energy generates excited states with quantum numbers that cannot be obtained in the DRPA approach. Nevertheless, the two-phonon states mix weakly with particle-hole configurations and participate only partially in the formation of the lowest-lying positive-parity excited states. The stability of the present calculation is tested vs. the truncation of model space. It is demonstrated that when single-particle strength fragmentation is properly considered, the present formalism exhibits convergence with respect to the chosen model space within the confines of the chosen approximation scheme.

Faddeev treatment of long-range correlations and the one-hole spectral function of O16

The Faddeev technique is employed to study the influence of both particle-particle and particle-hole phonons on the one-hole spectral function of O16. Collective excitations are accounted for at a random phase approximation level and subsequently summed to all orders by the Faddeev equations to obtain the nucleon self-energy. An iterative procedure is applied to investigate the effects of the self-consistent inclusion of the fragmentation in the determination of the phonons and the corresponding self-energy. The present results indicate that the characteristics of hole fragmentation are related to the low-lying states of O16.

Faddeev Approach to the Study of One- and Two-hole Spectral Functions

Theoretical calculations of one- and two-hole spectral functions for the O16 nucleus are still failing to describe some of the important features observed experimentally. Of critical importance for the solution of these issues is to obtain an appropriate description of the interplay between hole-hole and particle-hole excitations. A formalism is reviewed here that allows the consistent treatment of such phonons at a Random Phase approximation level. Although the application of this formalism to O16 is still in the implementation stage, some preliminary results are discussed here.

1999 Quadrantids and the lunar Na atmosphere

Enhancements of the Na emission and temperature from the lunar atmosphere were reported during the Leonids meteor showers of 1995, 1997 and 1998. Here we report a search for similar enhancement during the 1999 Quadrantids, which have the highest mass flux of any of the major streams. No enhancements were detected. We suggest that different chemical-physical properties of the Leonid and Quadrantid streams may be responsible for the difference.
