Vacuum decay in an interacting multiverse

We examine a new multiverse scenario in which the component universes interact. We focus our attention to the process of "true" vacuum nucleation in the false vacuum within one single element of the multiverse. It is shown that the interactions lead to a collective behaviour that might lead, under specific conditions, to a pre-inflationary phase and ensued distinguishable imprints in the comic microwave background radiation.

Gravitational collapse in non-minimally coupled gravity: finite density singularities and the breaking of the no-hair theorem

In this work we study the dynamics of gravitational collapse of a homogeneous dust sphere in a model exhibiting a linear non-minimal coupling between matter and curvature. The evolution of the scale factor and the matter density is obtained for different choices of Lagrangean density of matter, highlighting the direct physical relevance of the latter in this theory. Following a discussion of the junction conditions and boundary terms in the action functional, the matching with the outer metric and event horizon is analyzed. We find that a distinct phenomenology arises when compared with standard results for the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse, namely the possibility of finite density black holes and the breaking of the no-hair theorem, due to a dependence of the end state of a black hole on the initial radius of the spherical body.

Interacting universes and the cosmological constant

We study some collective phenomena that may happen in a multiverse scenario. First, it is posed an interaction scheme between universes whose evolution is dominated by a cosmological constant. As a result of the interaction, the value of the cosmological constant of one of the universes becomes very close to zero at the expense of an increasing value of the cosmological constant of the partner universe. Second, we found normal modes for a 'chain' of interacting universes. The energy spectrum of the multiverse, being this taken as a collective system, splits into a large number of levels, some of which correspond to a value of the cosmological constant very close to zero. We finally point out that the multiverse may be much more than the mere sum of its parts.

Noncommutative Graphene

We consider a noncommutative description of graphene. This description consists of a Dirac equation for massless Dirac fermions plus noncommutative corrections, which are treated in the presence of an external magnetic field. We argue that, being a two-dimensional Dirac system, graphene is particularly interesting to test noncommutativity. We find that momentum noncommutativity affects the energy levels of graphene, but that it does not entail any kind of correction to the Hall conductivity.

Noncommutative Black Holes and the Singularity Problem

A phase-space noncommutativity in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model is considered to study the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. Due to the divergence of the probability of finding the black hole at the singularity from a canonical noncommutativity, one considers a non-canonical noncommutativity. It is shown that this more involved type of noncommutativity removes the problem of the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole.

Noncommutative Black Holes

One considers phase-space noncommutativity in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model to study the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. It is shown that the potential function of the corresponding quantum cosmology problem has a local minimum. One deduces the thermodynamics and show that the Hawking temperature and entropy exhibit an explicit dependence on the momentum noncommutativity regime and it is shown that the wave function vanishes in this limit.

Black Holes and Phase Space Noncommutativity

We use the solutions of the noncommutative Wheeler-De Witt equation arising from a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model to compute thermodynamic properties of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show that the noncommutativity in the momentum sector introduces a quadratic term in the potential function of the black hole minisuperspace model. This potential has a local minimum and thus the partition function can be computed by resorting to a saddle point evaluation in the neighbourhood of the minimum. The temperature and the entropy of the black hole are derived, and they have an explicit dependence on the inverse of the momentum noncommutative parameter, $η$. Moreover, we study the $t=r=0$ singularity in the noncommutative regime and show that in this case the wave function of the system vanishes in the neighbourhood of $t=r=0$.

Wigner Measures in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

We study the properties of quasi-distributions or Wigner measures in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a phase-space function to be a noncommutative Wigner measure, for a Gaussian to be a noncommutative Wigner measure, and derive certain properties of the marginal distributions which are not shared by ordinary Wigner measures. Moreover, we derive the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle. Finally, we show explicitly how the set of noncommutative Wigner measures relates to the sets of Liouville and (commutative) Wigner measures.

Noncommutative Quantum Cosmology

One presents a phase-space noncommutative extension of Quantum Cosmology in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs (KS) minisuperspace model. We obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation for the noncommutative system through the ADM formalism and a suitable Seiberg-Witten map. The resulting WDW equation explicitly depends on the phase-space noncommutative parameters, $θ$ and $η$. Numerical solutions of the noncommutative WDW equation are found and, interestingly, also bounds on the values of the noncommutative parameters. Moreover, we conclude that the noncommutativity in the momenta sector leads to a damped wave function implying that this type of noncommutativity can be relevant for a selection of possible initial states for the universe.

Berry Phase in the Gravitational Quantum Well and the Seiberg-Witten map

We explicitly compute the geometrical Berry phase for the noncommutative gravitational quantum well for different SW maps. We find that they lead to different partial contributions to the Berry phase. For the most general map we obtain that $Δγ(S)\simη^3$, in a segment S of the path in the configuration space where $\sqrtη$ is the fundamental momentum scale for the noncommutative gravitational quantum well. For the full closed path, we find, through an explicit computation, that $γ(C)=0$. This result is consistent with the fact that physical properties are independent of the SW map and shows that these maps do not introduce degeneracies or level crossing in the noncommutative extensions of the gravitational quantum well.

Deformation quantization of noncommutative quantum mechanics and dissipation

We review the main features of the Weyl-Wigner formulation of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we present a $\star$-product and a Moyal bracket suitable for this theory as well as the concept of noncommutative Wigner function. The properties of these quasi-distributions are discussed as well as their relation to the sets of ordinary Wigner functions and positive Liouville probability densities. Based on these notions we propose criteria for assessing whether a commutative regime has emerged in the realm of noncommutative quantum mechanics. To induce this noncommutative-commutative transition, we couple a particle to an external bath of oscillators. The master equation for the Brownian particle is deduced.
