B meson form factors from HQET simulations

We use simulations of heavy quark effective field theory to calculate the Isgur-Wise function, and we demonstrate the feasibility of calculating the matrix element for the $B \to π+ \leptons$ decay in the lattice heavy quark effective theory (HQET).

Lattice Calculations of Decay Constants

Lattice attempts to compute the leptonic decay constants of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons are described. I give a short historical overview of such attempts and then discuss some current calculations. I focus on three of the most important sources of systematic error: the extrapolation to the continuum, the chiral extrapolation in light quark mass, and the effects of quenching. I briefly discuss the ``bag parameters'' $B_B$ and $B_{B_s}$, and then conclude with my expectations of the precision in decay constants and bag parameters that will be possible in the next few years.

B Mixing on the Lattice: $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$ and Related Quantities

The MILC collaboration computation of heavy-light decay constants is described. Results for $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios are presented. These results are still preliminary, but the analysis is close to being completed. Sources of systematic error, both within the quenched approximation and from quenching itself, are estimated, although the latter estimate is rather crude. A sample of our results is: $f_B=153 \pm 10 {}^{+36}_{-13} {}^{+13}_{-0} MeV$, $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.10 \pm 0.02 {}^{+0.05}_{-0.03} {}^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, and $f_{B}/f_{D_s} = 0.76 \pm 0.03 {}^{+0.07}_{-0.04} {}^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic (within the quenched approximation), and systematic (of quenching), respectively. The largest source of error comes from the extrapolation to the continuum. The second largest source is the chiral extrapolation. At present, the central values are based on linear chiral extrapolations; a shift to quadratic extrapolations would for example raise $f_B$ by $\approx 20$ MeV and thereby make the error within the quenched approximation more symmetric.

SU(3) Flavor Breaking in Hadronic Matrix Elements for $B - \bar B$ Oscillations

We present an analysis, using quenched configurations at $6/g^2=$5.7, 5.85, 6.0, and 6.3 of the matrix element $\MP\equiv\langle \bar P_{hl}|\bar h γ_μ(1-γ_5)l \bar h γ_μ(1-γ_5)l|P_{hl}\rangle$ for heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons. The results are extrapolated to the physical $B$ meson states, $\Bd$ and $\Bs$. We directly compute the ratio $\MS/\MB$, and obtain the preliminary result $\MS/\MB=1.54(13)(32)$. A precise value of this SU(3) breaking ratio is important for determining $V_{td}$ once the mixing parameter $x_s$ for $\Bs-\bar\Bs$ is measured experimentally. We also determine values for the corresponding B parameters, $B_{bs}(2 \rm{GeV})=B_{bd}(2 \rm{GeV})=1.02(13)$, which we cannot distinguish in the present analysis.

Recent MILC spectrum results

We report on results from three spectrum calculations with staggered quarks: 1) a quenched calculation with the standard action for the gluons and quarks; 2) a quenched calculation with improved actions for both the gluons and quarks; and 3) a calculation with two flavors of dynamical quarks using the standard actions for the gluons and quarks.

Update on $f_B$

We describe the current status of the MILC collaboration computation of $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios. Progress over the past year includes: better statistics and plateaus at $β=6.52$ (quenched), $β=5.6$ ($N_F=2$) and $β=5.445$ ($N_F=2$), new runs with a wide range of dynamical quark masses at $β=5.5$ ($N_F=2$), an estimate of the systematic errors due to the chiral extrapolation, and an improved analysis which consistently takes into account both the correlations in the data at every stage and the systematic effects due to changing fitting ranges.

Assorted weak matrix elements involving the bottom quark

As part of a larger project to estimate the fB decay constant, we are recalculating fB_static using a variational smearing method in an effort to improve accuracy. Preliminary results for the static B_B parameter and HQET two point functions are also presented.

Thermodynamics for two flavor QCD

We conclude our analysis of the N_t=6 equation of state for two flavor QCD, first described at last year's conference. We have obtained new runs at am_q=0.025 and improved runs at am_q=0.0125. The results are extrapolated to m_q=0, and we extract the speed of sound as well. We also present evidence for a restoration of the SU(2) X SU(2) chiral symmetry just above the crossover, but not of the axial U(1) chiral symmetry.

The $N_t=6$ equation of state for two flavor QCD

We improve the calculation of the equation of state for two flavor QCD by simulating on $N_t=6$ lattices at appropriate values of the couplings for the deconfinement/chiral symmetry restoration crossover. For $am_q=0.0125$ the energy density rises rapidly to approximately 1 ${\rm GeV/fm^3}$ just after the crossover($m_π/m_ρ\approx 0.4$ at this point). Comparing with our previous result for $N_t=4$~\cite{eos}, we find large finite $N_t$ corrections as expected from free field theory on finite lattices. We also provide formulae for extracting the speed of sound from the measured quantities.

Two-flavor staggered-fermion thermodynamics at $N_t = 12$

We present new results in an ongoing study of the nature of the high temperature crossover in QCD with two light fermion flavors. These results are obtained with the conventional staggered fermion action at the smallest lattice spacing to date---approximately 0.1 fm. Of particular interest are a study of the temperature of the crossover, an important indicator of continuum scaling, a determination of the induced baryon charge and baryon susceptibility, used to study the dissolution of hadrons at the crossover, the scalar susceptibility, a signal for the appearance of soft modes, and the chiral order parameter, used to test models of critical behavior.

$f_B$ quenched and unquenched

Results for $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$, and their ratios are presented. High statistics quenched runs at $β=5.7$, $5.85$, $6.0$, and $6.3$, plus a run still in progress at $β=6.52$ make possible a preliminary extrapolation to the continuum. The data allows good control of all systematic errors except for quenching, although not all of the error estimates have been finalized. Results from configurations which include effects of dynamical quarks show a significant deviation from the quenched results and make possible a crude estimate of the quenching error.

Status and prospect for determining $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_{B_s} / f_B$ on the lattice

Preliminary results from the MILC collaboration for $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios are presented. We compute in the quenched approximation at $β=6.3$, 6.0 and 5.7 with Wilson light quarks and static and Wilson heavy quarks. We attempt to quantify all systematic errors other than quenching, and have a first indication of the size of quenching errors.

Preliminary heavy-light decay constants from the MILC collaboration

Preliminary results from the MILC collaboration for $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios are presented. We compute in the quenched approximation at $β=6.3$, 6.0 and 5.7 with Wilson light quarks and static and Wilson heavy quarks. We attempt to quantify systematic errors due to finite volume, finite lattice spacing, large $am$, and fitting and extrapolation uncertainties. The hopping parameter approach of Henty and Kenway is used to treat the heavy quarks; the sources are Coulomb gauge gaussians.

$B \to K^* + γ$ and $B_s \to ϕ+ γ$ on the Lattice

A lattice calculation of the form factors that determine the ``hadronization ratios'', such as $R_{K^*}$ and $R_ϕ$, where $R_{K^*} \equiv [Γ($B \to K^* γ$)/Γ(b \to s γ)]$, is presented in the quenched approximation. Lattice data shows strong evidence for the scaling law suggested by heavy quark symmetry for one of the form factors ({\it i.e.}\ $T_2$). The data also gives strong support for the simple pole ansatz for the $q^2$ dependence of $T_2$ in the range of available $q^2$. We thus find $T_2(0) = .10 \pm.01\pm.03$ yielding $R_{K^*} =(6.0\pm1.2\pm3.4)\%$; we also find $R_ϕ=(6.6\pm1.3\pm3.7)\%$.

We summarize results for partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and indicate an application to staggered fermion QCD in which the square root of the determinant is taken to reduce the number of flavors from four to two.

A Lattice Calculation of the Isgur-Wise Function

We calculate the Isgur-Wise function ($ξ_0$) by measuring the heavy-heavy meson transition matrix element on the lattice in the quenched approximation. The standard Wilson action is used for both the heavy and the light quarks. Our numerical results are compared with various model calculations and experimental data. In particular, using a linear fit, we find $ρ^2 = 1.24\pm .26 \pm .26 $. (The slope of $ξ_0$ at the zero-recoil point is $-ρ^2$.) Using instead the parametrization of $ξ_0$ suggested by Neubert and Rieckert and fitting the lattice data up to $v\cdot v' \sim 1.2$, we find $ρ^2_{NR}=1.41\pm.19\pm.19$

A Lattice Study of the Gluon Propagator in Momentum Space

We consider pure glue QCD at beta=5.7, beta=6.0 and beta=6.3. We evaluate the gluon propagator both in time at zero 3-momentum and in momentum space. From the former quantity we obtain evidence for a dynamically generated effective mass, which at beta=6.0 and beta=6.3 increases with the time separation of the sources, in agreement with earlier results. The momentum space propagator G(k) provides further evidence for mass generation. In particular, at beta=6.0, for k less than 1 GeV, the propagator G(k) can be fit to a continuum formula proposed by Gribov and others, which contains a mass scale b, presumably related to the hadronization mass scale. For higher momenta Gribov's model no longer provides a good fit, as G(k) tends rather to follow an inverse power law. The results at beta=6.3 are consistent with those at beta=6.0, but only the high momentum region is accessible on this lattice. We find b in the range of three to four hundred MeV and the exponent of the inverse power law about 2.7. On the other hand, at beta=5.7 (where we can only study momenta up to 1 GeV) G(k) is best fit to a simple massive boson propagator with mass m. We argue that such a discrepancy may be related to a lack of scaling for low momenta at beta=5.7. {}From our results, the study of correlation functions in momentum space looks promising, especially because the data points in Fourier space turn out to be much less correlated than in real space.

Finite-size and quark mass effects on the QCD spectrum with two flavors

We have carried out spectrum calculations with two flavors of dynamical Kogut-Susskind quarks on four lattice sizes from $8^3\times 24$ to $16^3\times24$ at couplings that correspond to chiral symmetry restoration for a lattice with 6 time slices. We estimate that the linear spatial sizes of the lattices range from 1.8 to 3.6 fm. We find significant finite size effects for all particles between the smallest and largest volume with the larger quark mass that we study, $am_q=0.025$, where $a$ is the lattice spacing. The nucleon experiences the largest effect of about 6 percent. We also study a lighter quark mass, $am_q=0.0125$, on the two largest lattices. Effects of the dynamical and valence quark masses on the hadron spectrum are studied both directly, by comparing the two simulations, and by extracting mass derivatives from the correlation functions. We do not find much improvement in the nucleon to rho mass ratio as we decrease the quark mass at this lattice spacing. Finally, we report on an unsuccessful attempt to see effects of the $ρ\rightarrow 2π$ decay on the $ρ$ mass, and on studies of Wilson and Kogut-Susskind hadron masses with large valence quark masses.
