Update on the 2+1+1 flavor QCD equation of state with HISQ

We present recent results on the QCD equation of state with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ). We focus on three sets of ensembles with temporal extent 6, 8 and 10, that reach up to temperatures of 967, 725 and 580 MeV, respectively. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned to the physical values and the light quarks mass is set to one fifth of the strange. This corresponds to a Goldstone pion of about 300 MeV.

Heavy-meson semileptonic decays for the Standard Model and beyond

We calculate the form factors for the semileptonic decays $B_s\to K\ellν$ and $B\to K\ell\ell$ with lattice QCD. We work at several lattice spacings and a range of light quark masses, using the MILC 2+1-flavor asqtad ensembles. We use the Fermilab method for the $b$ quark. We obtain chiral-continuum extrapolations for $E_K$ up to $\sim1.2$ GeV and then extend to the entire kinematic range with the model-independent $z$ expansion.

Report of the Quark Flavor Physics Working Group

This report represents the response of the Intensity Frontier Quark Flavor Physics Working Group to the Snowmass charge. We summarize the current status of quark flavor physics and identify many exciting future opportunities for studying the properties of strange, charm, and bottom quarks. The ability of these studies to reveal the effects of new physics at high mass scales make them an essential ingredient in a well-balanced experimental particle physics program.

Semileptonic Kaon Decay in Staggered Chiral Perturbation Theory

The determination of $\vert V_{us}\vert$ from kaon semileptonic decays requires the value of the form factor $f_+(q^2=0)$, which can be calculated precisely on the lattice. We provide the one-loop partially quenched staggered chiral perturbation theory expressions that may be employed to analyze staggered simulations of $f_+(q^2)$ with three light flavors. We consider both the case of a mixed action, where the valence and sea sectors have different staggered actions, and the standard case where these actions are the same. The momentum transfer $q^2$ of the form factor is allowed to have an arbitrary value. We give results for the generic situation where the $u$, $d$, and $s$ quark masses are all different, $N_f=1+1+1$, and for the isospin limit, $N_f=2+1$. The expression we obtain for $f_+(q^2)$ is independent of the mass of the (valence) spectator quark. In the limit of vanishing lattice spacing, our results reduce to the one-loop continuum partially quenched expression for $f_+(q^2)$, which has not previously been reported in the literature for the $N_f=1+1+1$ case. Our expressions have already been used in staggered lattice analyses of $f_+(0)$, and should prove useful in future calculations as well.

Charmed and strange pseudoscalar meson decay constants from HISQ simulations

We update our determinations of $f_{D^+}$, $f_{D_s}$, $f_K$, and quark mass ratios from simulations with four flavors of HISQ dynamical quarks. The availability of ensembles with light quarks near their physical mass means that we can extract physical results with only small corrections for valence- and sea-quark mass mistunings instead of a chiral extrapolation. The adjusted valence-quark masses and lattice spacings may be determined from an ensemble-by-ensemble analysis, and the results for the quark mass ratios then extrapolated to the continuum limit. Our central values of the charmed meson decay constants, however, come from an alternative analysis, which uses staggered chiral perturbation theory for the heavy-light mesons, and allows us to incorporate data at unphysical quark masses where statistical errors are often smaller. A jackknife analysis propagated through all of these steps takes account of the correlations among all the quantities used in the analysis. Systematic errors from the finite spatial size and EM effects are estimated by varying the parameters in the analysis, and systematic errors from the assumptions in the continuum extrapolation are estimated from the spread of values from different extrapolations.

$B\toπ\ellν$ and $B\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ semileptonic form factors from unquenched lattice QCD

We update the lattice calculation of the $B\toπ$ semileptonic form factors, which have important applications to the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ and the $B\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ rare decay. We use MILC asqtad ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ sea quarks and over a range of lattice spacings $a \approx 0.045$--$0.12$ fm. We perform a combined chiral and continuum extrapolation of our lattice data using SU(2) staggered chiral perturbation theory in the hard pion limit. To extend the results for the form factors to the full kinematic range, we take a functional approach to parameterize the form factors using the Bourrely-Caprini-Lellouch formalism in a model-independent way. Our analysis is still blinded with an unknown off-set factor which will be disclosed when we present the final results.

Matrix Elements for $D$- and $B$-Mixing from 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We present the status of our calculation of hadronic matrix elements for $D$- and $B$-meson mixing. We use a large set of the MILC collaboration's $N_f=2+1$ asqtad ensembles, which includes lattice spacings in the range $a\approx0.12$-0.045 fm, and up/down to strange quark mass ratios as low as 0.05. The asqtad action is also employed for the light valence quarks. For the heavy quarks we use the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action with the Fermilab interpretation. Our calculation covers the complete set of five local operators needed to describe $B$-meson mixing in the Standard Model and Beyond. In the charm sector, our calculation of local mixing matrix elements may be used to constrain new physics models. We present final correlator fit results on the full data set for the $B$-meson mixing project and preliminary fit results for the $D$-meson mixing project.

Symanzik flow on HISQ ensembles

We report on a scale determination with gradient-flow techniques on the $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. The lattice scale $w_0/a$, originally proposed by the BMW collaboration, is computed using Symanzik flow at four lattice spacings ranging from 0.15 to 0.06 fm. With a Taylor series ansatz, the results are simultaneously extrapolated to the continuum and interpolated to physical quark masses. We give a preliminary determination of the scale $w_0$ in physical units, along with associated systematic errors, and compare with results from other groups. We also present a first estimate of autocorrelation lengths as a function of flowtime for these ensembles.

Kaon semileptonic vector form factor and determination of |V_{us}| using staggered fermions

Using staggered fermions and twisted boundary conditions, we calculate the K meson semileptonic decay vector form factor at zero momentum transfer. The HISQ formulation is used for the valence quarks, while the sea quarks are simulated with the asqtad action (MILC N_f=2+1 configurations). For the chiral and continuum extrapolation we use two-loop continuum CHPT, supplemented by partially quenched staggered CHPT at one loop. Our result is f_+^{Kπ}(0) = 0.9667+-0.0023+-0.0033, where the first error is statistical and the second is the sum in quadrature of the systematic uncertainties. This result is the first N_f=2+1 calculation with two lattice spacings and a controlled continuum extrapolation. It is also the most precise result to date for the vector form factor and, although the central value is larger than previous unquenched lattice calculations, it is compatible with them within errors. Combining our value for f_+^{Kπ}(0) with the latest experimental measurements of K semileptonic decays, we obtain |V_{us}| = 0.2238+-0.0009+-0.0005, where the first error is from f_+^{Kπ}(0) and the second one is experimental. As a byproduct of our calculation, we obtain the combination of low-energy constants [C_{12}^r+C_{34}^r-(L_5^r)^2](M_ρ) = (3.62+-1.00)x10^{-6}.

Neutral B Mixing in Staggered Chiral Perturbation Theory

I calculate, at one loop in staggered chiral perturbation theory, the matrix elements of the complete set of five local operators that may contribute to B mixing both in the Standard Model and in beyond-the-Standard-Model theories. Lattice computations of these matrix elements by the Fermilab Lattice/MILC collaborations (and earlier by the HPQCD collaboration) convert a light staggered quark into a naive quark, and construct the relevant 4-quark operators as local products of two local bilinears, each involving the naive light quark and the heavy quark. This particular representation of the operators turns out to be important in the chiral calculation, and it results in the presence of "wrong-spin" operators, whose contributions however vanish in the continuum limit. If the matrix elements of all five operators are computed on the lattice, then no additional low energy constants are required to describe wrong-spin chiral effects.

Lattice QCD ensembles with four flavors of highly improved staggered quarks

We present results from our simulations of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with four flavors of quarks: u, d, s, and c. These simulations are performed with a one-loop Symanzik improved gauge action, and the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action. We are generating gauge configurations with four values of the lattice spacing ranging from 0.06 fm to 0.15 fm, and three values of the light quark mass, including the value for which the Goldstone pion mass is equal to the physical pion mass. We discuss simulation algorithms, scale setting, taste symmetry breaking, and the autocorrelations of various quantities. We also present results for the topological susceptibility which demonstrate the improvement of the HISQ configurations relative to those generated earlier with the asqtad improved staggered action.

Leptonic decay-constant ratio f_{K^+}/f_{pi^+} from lattice QCD with physical light quarks

A calculation of the ratio of leptonic decay constants f_{K^+}/f_{π^+} makes possible a precise determination of the ratio of CKM matrix elements |V_{us}|/|V_{ud}| in the Standard Model, and places a stringent constraint on the scale of new physics that would lead to deviations from unitarity in the first row of the CKM matrix. We compute f_{K^+}/f_{π^+} numerically in unquenched lattice QCD using gauge-field ensembles recently generated that include four flavors of dynamical quarks: up, down, strange, and charm. We analyze data at four lattice spacings a ~ 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm with simulated pion masses down to the physical value 135 MeV. We obtain f_{K^+}/f_{π^+} = 1.1947(26)(37), where the errors are statistical and total systematic, respectively. This is our first physics result from our N_f = 2+1+1 ensembles, and the first calculation of f_{K^+}/f_{π^+} from lattice-QCD simulations at the physical point. Our result is the most precise lattice-QCD determination of f_{K^+}/f_{π^+}, with an error comparable to the current world average. When combined with experimental measurements of the leptonic branching fractions, it leads to a precise determination of |V_{us}|/|V_{ud}| = 0.2309(9)(4) where the errors are theoretical and experimental, respectively.

Electromagnetic contributions to pseudoscalar masses

We report on the calculation by the MILC Collaboration of the electromagnetic effects on kaon and pion masses. These masses are computed in QCD with dynamical (asqtad staggered) quarks plus quenched photons at three lattice spacings varying from 0.12 to 0.06 fm. The masses are fit to staggered chiral perturbation theory with NLO electromagnetic terms, as well as analytic terms at higher order. We extrapolate the results to physical light-quark masses and to the continuum limit. At the current stage of the analysis, most, but not all, of the systematic errors have been estimated. The main goal is the comparison of kaon electromagnetic splittings to those of the pion, i.e., an evaluation of the corrections to "Dashen's theorem." This in turn will allow us to significantly reduce the systematic errors in our determination of m_u/m_d.

Neutral B mixing from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

We present an update of the Fermilab-MILC Collaboration's calculation of hadronic matrix elements for B^0-\bar{B^0} mixing. This work is a more extended analysis than our recent publication of the SU(3)-breaking ratio xi [arXiv:1205.7013]. We use the asqtad staggered action for light valence quarks in combination with the Fermilab interpretation of the Sheikoleslami-Wohlert action for heavy quarks. The calculations use MILC's 2+1 flavor asqtad ensembles. Ensembles include four lattice spacings from approximately 0.125 fm to 0.045 fm and up/down to strange quark mass ratios as low as 0.05. Our calculation covers the complete set of five operators needed to describe B mixing in the Standard Model and beyond. In addition to an update including a fuller set of analyzed data, we comment on the form of the staggered ChPT extrapolation function.

Status of the MILC calculation of electromagnetic contributions to pseudoscalar masses

We calculate pseudoscalar masses on gauge configurations containing the effects of 2+1 flavors of dynamical asqtad quarks and quenched electromagnetism. The lattice spacings vary from 0.12 to 0.06 fm. The masses are fit with staggered chiral perturbation theory including NLO electromagnetic terms. We attempt to extract the fit parameters for the electromagnetic contributions, while taking into account the finite volume effects, and extrapolate them to the physical limit.

Two-point Correlator Fits on HISQ Ensembles

We present our methods to fit the two point correlators for light, strange, and charmed pseudoscalar meson physics with the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action. We make use of the least-squares fit including the full covariance matrix of the correlators and including Gaussian constraints on some parameters. We fit the correlators on a variety of the HISQ ensembles. The lattice spacing ranges from 0.15 fm down to 0.06 fm. The light sea quark mass ranges from 0.2 times the strange quark mass down to the physical light quark mass. The HISQ ensembles also include lattices with different volumes and with unphysical values of the strange quark mass. We use the results from this work to obtain our preliminary results of $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$, $f_{D_s}/f_{D}$, and ratios of quark masses presented in another talk [1].

Kaon semileptonic decay form factors with HISQ valence quarks

We report on the status of our kaon semileptonic form factor calculations using the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation to simulate the valence fermions. We present results for the form factor f_+^{K π}(0) on the asqtad N_f=2+1 MILC configurations, discuss the chiral-continuum extrapolation, and give a preliminary estimate of the total error. We also present a more preliminary set of results for the same form factor but with the sea quarks also simulated with the HISQ action; these results include data at the physical light quark masses. The improvements that we expect to achieve with the use of the HISQ configurations and simulations at the physical quark masses are briefly discussed.
