Perturbative instabilities in Horava gravity

We investigate the scalar and tensor perturbations in Horava gravity, with and without detailed balance, around a flat background. Once both types of perturbations are taken into account, it is revealed that the theory is plagued by ghost-like scalar instabilities in the range of parameters which would render it power-counting renormalizable, that cannot be overcome by simple tricks such as analytic continuation. Implementing a consistent flow between the UV and IR limits seems thus more challenging than initially presumed, regardless of whether the theory approaches General Relativity at low energies or not. Even in the phenomenologically viable parameter space, the tensor sector leads to additional potential problems, such as fine-tunings and super-luminal propagation.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet metrics: black holes, black strings and a staticity theorem

We find the general solution of the 6-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations in a large class of space and time-dependent warped geometries. Several distinct families of solutions are found, some of which include black string metrics, space and time-dependent solutions and black holes with exotic horizons. Among these, some are shown to verify a Birkhoff type staticity theorem, although here, the usual assumption of maximal symmetry on the horizon is relaxed, allowing exotic horizon geometries. We provide explicit examples of such static exotic black holes, including ones whose horizon geometry is that of a Bergman space. We find that the situation is very different from higher-dimensional general relativity, where Einstein spaces are admissible black hole horizons and the associated black hole potential is not even affected. In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, on the contrary, the non-trivial Weyl tensor of such exotic horizons is exposed to the bulk dynamics through the higher order Gauss-Bonnet term, severely constraining the allowed horizon geometries and adding a novel charge-like parameter to the black hole potential. The latter is related to the Euler characteristic of the four-dimensional horizon and provides, in some cases, additional black hole horizons.

Genetic Algorithms and Supernovae Type Ia Analysis

We introduce genetic algorithms as a means to analyze supernovae type Ia data and extract model-independent constraints on the evolution of the Dark Energy equation of state. Specifically, we will give a brief introduction to the genetic algorithms along with some simple examples to illustrate their advantages and finally we will apply them to the supernovae type Ia data. We find that genetic algorithms can lead to results in line with already established parametric and non-parametric reconstruction methods and could be used as a complementary way of treating SnIa data. As a non-parametric method, genetic algorithms provide a model-independent way to analyze data and can minimize bias due to premature choice of a dark energy model.

Diagrammatic Derivation of Lovelock Densities

We discuss a method of calculating the various scalar densities encountered in Lovelock theory which relies on diagrammatic, instead of algebraic manipulations. Taking advantage of the known symmetric and antisymmetric properties of the Riemann tensor which appears in the Lovelock densities, we map every quadratic or higher contraction into a corresponding permutation diagram. The derivation of the explicit form of each density is then reduced to identifying the distinct diagrams, from which we can also read off the overall combinatoric factors. The method is applied to the first Lovelock densities, of order two (Gauss-Bonnet term) and three.

Synergistic Gravity and the Role of Resonances in GRS-Inspired Braneworlds

We consider 5D braneworld models of quasi-localized gravity in which 4D gravity is reproduced at intermediate scales while the extra dimension opens up at both the very short and the very long distances, where the geometry is flat. Our main interest is the interplay between the zero mode of these models, whenever a normalizable zero mode exists, and the effects of zero energy graviton resonant modes coming from the contributions of massive KK modes. We first consider a compactified version of the GRS model and find that quasi-localized gravity is characterized by a scale for which both the resonance and the zero mode have significant contribution to 4D gravity. Above this scale, gravity is primarily mediated by the zero mode, while the resonance gives only minor corrections. Next, we consider an asymmetric version of the standard non-compact GRS model, characterized by different cosmological constants on each AdS side. We show that a resonance is present but the asymmetry, through the form of the localizing potential, can weaken it, resulting in a shorter lifetime and, thus, in a shorter distance scale for 4D gravity. As a third model exhibiting quasi-localization, we consider a version of the GRS model in which the central positive tension brane has been replaced by a configuration of a scalar field propagating in the bulk.

Pseudo-3-Branes in a Curved 6D Bulk

We consider a model involving a 4-brane in a 6D bulk which carries sigma model fields. An axion field on the 4-brane cancels the pressure along one direction leading to an effective codimension-2 3-brane. For a range of parameters of the theory, we get a transverse space which is non-compact, providing a possible solution to the cosmological constant problem. A setup with two branes in a compact space is also treated. In this case, a mild fine-tuning between the radii of the two 4-branes is necessary. Finally, we explore the 4-brane problem in the Gauss-Codazzi formulation and we discuss general aspects of gravity in the presence of additional brane sources.

Cosmic Acceleration Data and Bulk-Brane Energy Exchange

We consider a braneworld model with bulk-brane energy exchange. This allows for crossing of the w=-1 phantom divide line without introducing phantom energy with quantum instabilities. We use the latest SnIa data included in the Gold06 dataset to provide an estimate of the preferred parameter values of this braneworld model. We use three fitting approaches which provide best fit parameter values and hint towards a bulk energy component that behaves like relativistic matter which is propagating in the bulk and is moving at a speed v along the fifth dimension, while the bulk-brane energy exchange component corresponds to negative pressure and signifies energy flowing from the bulk into the brane. We find that the best fit effective equation of state parameter $w_{eff}$ marginally crosses the phantom divide line w=-1. Thus, we have demonstrated both the ability of this class of braneworld models to provide crossing of the phantom divide and also that cosmological data hint towards natural values for the model parameters.

Dark energy from bulk matter

We consider the possibility of getting accelerated expansion and w=-1 crossing in the context of a braneworld cosmological setup, endowed with a bulk energy-momentum tensor. For a given ansatz of the bulk content, we demonstrate that the bulk pressures dominate the dynamics at late times and can lead to accelerated expansion. We also analyze the constraints under which we can get a realistic profile for the effective equation of state and conclude that matter in the bulk has the effect of dark energy on the brane. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to simulate the behavior of a Chaplygin gas using non-exotic bulk matter.

Brane Cosmology with a Non-Minimally Coupled Bulk-Scalar Field

We consider the cosmological evolution of a brane in the presence of a bulk scalar field coupled to the Ricci scalar through a term f(ϕ)R. We derive the generalized Friedmann equation on the brane in the presence of arbitrary brane and bulk-matter, as well as the scalar field equation, allowing for a general scalar potential V(phi). We focus on a quadratic form of the above non-minimal coupling and obtain a class of late-time solutions for the scale factor and the scalar field on the brane that exhibit accelerated expansion for a range of the non-minimal coupling parameter.

Exact Solutions in 5-D Brane Models With Scalar Fields

In this talk we consider the problem of a scalar field, non-minimally coupled to gravity, in the presence of a Brane. A number of exact solutions, for a wide range of values of the coupling parameter, are presented. The behavior and general features of these solutions are discussed. We derive solutions for the scalar field compatible with the Randall-Sundrum metric and also geometries which can accomodate a folded kink-like scalar. Analytic and numerical results are provided for the case of a Brane or for smooth geometries, where the scalar field acts as a thick Brane. We also discuss briefly the graviton localization in our setup and demonstrate the characteristic volcano-like localizing potential for gravitons.

Brane Cosmological Evolution With Bulk Matter

We consider the cosmological evolution of a brane for general bulk matter content. In our setup the bulk pressure and the energy exchange densities are comparable to the brane energy density. Adopting a phenomenological fluid ansatz and generalizations of it, we derive a set of exact solutions of the Friedmann equation that exhibit accelerated expansion. We find that the effective equation of state parameter for the dark energy can exhibit w=-1 crossing without the presence of exotic matter.

Brane Models with a Ricci-Coupled Scalar Field

We consider the problem of a scalar field, non-minimally coupled to gravity through a $-ξϕ^{2}R$ term, in the presence of a Brane. Exact solutions, for a wide range of values of the coupling parameter $ξ$, for both $ϕ$-dependent and $ϕ$-independent Brane tension, are derived and their behaviour is studied. In the case of a Randall-Sundrum geometry, a class of the resulting scalar field solutions exhibits a folded-kink profile. We go beyond the Randall-Sundrum geometry studying general warp factor solutions in the presence of a kink scalar. Analytic and numerical results are provided for the case of a Brane or for smooth geometries, where the scalar field acts as a thick Brane. It is shown that finite geometries with warp factors that asymptotically decrease exponentially are realizable for a wide range of parameter values. We also study graviton localization in our setup and find that the localizing potential for gravitons with the characteristic volcano-like profile develops a local maximum located at the origin for high values of the coupling $ξ$.
