The angular resolution of the Pierre Auger Observatory

We discuss the angular resolution obtained for events registered with the surface detector alone and for hybrid events, i.e., those observed simultaneously by both the surface and fluorescence detectors. The angular accuracy of the surface detector is directly extracted from the data itself and on an event by event basis, and is given as a function of the number of stations triggered by the event and of the zenith angle of the shower. We compare the angular resolution of the surface detector obtained from hybrid events with the one obtained from the surface detector alone.

Estimating a cosmic ray detector exposure sky map under the hypothesis of seasonal and diurnal effects factorization

The measurement of large scale patterns or anisotropies in the arrival direction of high energy cosmic rays is an important step towards the understanding of their origin. Such measurements rely on an accurate estimation of the detector relative exposure in each direction on the sky : the coverage map. To reach an accuracy on the determination of this map below the one percent level one must properly identify and correct for all the environmental effects that may induce variations in the detector exposure as a function of time. In an approach, similar to the one used in anti-sidereal time analysis, we propose a method to empirically estimate and correct for those effects under the hypothesis that seasonal and diurnal variations can be factorized. We tested this method using a model ground detector of cosmic ray air showers, whose aperture varies due to the dependence of the air shower development on the atmospheric conditions.

The Surface Detector System of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to study cosmic rays with energies greater than 10^{19} eV. Two sites are envisaged for the observatory, one in each hemisphere, for complete sky coverage. The southern site of the Auger Observatory, now approaching completion in Mendoza, Argentina, features an array of 1600 water-Cherenkov surface detector stations covering 3000 km^2, together with 24 fluorescence telescopes to record the air shower cascades produced by these particles. The two complementary detector techniques together with the large collecting area form a powerful instrument for these studies. Although construction is not yet complete, the Auger Observatory has been taking data stably since January 2004 and the first physics results are being published. In this paper we describe the design features and technical characteristics of the surface detector stations of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

A model for the time uncertainty measurements in the Auger surface detector array

The precise determination of the arrival direction of cosmic rays is a fundamental prerequisite for the search for sources or the study of their anisotropies on the sky. One of the most important aspects to achieve an optimal measurement of these directions is to properly take into account the measurement uncertainties in the estimation procedure. In this article we present a model for the uncertainties associated with the time measurements in the Auger surface detector array. We show that this model represents well the measurement uncertainties and therefore provides the basis for an optimal determination of the arrival direction. With this model and a description of the shower front geometry it is possible to estimate, on an event by event basis, the uncertainty associated with the determination of the arrival directions of the cosmic rays.

The trigger system of the Pierre Auger Surface Detector: operation, efficiency and stability

The trigger system of the Surface Detector (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory is described, from the identification of candidate showers ($E>1$ EeV) at the level of a single station, among a huge background (mainly single muons), up to the selection of real events and the rejection of random coincidences at a higher central trigger level (including the reconstruction accuracy). Efficiency of a single station trigger is evaluated using real data , and the high performance of event selection hierarchy will be demonstrated.

TANGO ARRAY An Air Shower Experiment in Buenos Aires

A new Air Shower Observatory has been constructed in Buenos Aires during 1999, and commissioned and set in operation in 2000. The observatory consists of an array of four water Čerenkov detectors, enclosing a geometrical area of $\sim$ 30.000 m$^{2}$, and is optimized for the observation of cosmic rays in the ``knee'' energy region. The array detects $\sim$ 250 to $\sim$ 1500 showers/day, depending on the selected triggering condition. In this paper, the design and construction of the array, and the automatic system for data adquisition, daily calibration, and monitoring, are described. Also, the Monte Carlo simulations performed to develop a shower database, as well as the studies performed using the database to estimate the response and the angular and energy resolutions of the array, are presented in detail.
