Local spin resonance and spin-Peierls-like phase transition in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet

Using inelastic magnetic neutron scattering we have discovered a localized spin resonance at 4.5 meV in the ordered phase of the geometrically frustrated cubic antiferromagnet $\rm ZnCr_2O_4$. The resonance develops abruptly from quantum critical fluctuations upon cooling through a first order transition to a co-planar antiferromagnet at $T_c=12.5(5)$ K. We argue that this transition is a three dimensional analogue of the spin-Peierls transition.

Triplet Waves in a Quantum Spin Liquid

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin-1/2 alternating bond antiferromagnet Cu(NO_3)_2. 2.5D_2O for 0.06<k_BT/J_1<1.5. For k_BT/J_1 << 1 the excitation spectrum is dominated by a coherent singlet-triplet mode centered at J_1=0.442(2) meV with sinusoidal dispersion and a bandwidth of J_2=0.106(2) meV. A complete description of the zero temperature contribution to the scattering function from this mode is provided by the Single Mode Approximation. At finite temperatures we observe exponentially activated band narrowing and damping. The relaxation rate is thermally activated and wave vector dependent with the period icity of the reciprocal lattice.

Anisotropic spin freezing in the S=1/2 zigzag ladder compound SrCuO2

Using magnetic neutron scattering we characterize an unusual low temperature phase in orthorhombic SrCuO2. The material contains zigzag spin ladders formed by pairs of S=1/2 chains (J=180 meV) coupled through a weak frustrated interaction |J'|<0.1J. At T<Tc1=5.0(4)K an elastic peak develops in a gapless magnetic excitation spectrum indicating spin freezing on a time scale larger than 200 picoseconds. While the frozen state has long range commensurate antiferromagnetic order along the chains with the correlation length exceeding 200 lattice periods along the c-axis and a substantial correlation length of 60(25) spacings along the a-axis perpendicular to the zigzag plane, only 2 lattice units are correlated along the b-axis which is the direction of the frustrated interactions. The frozen magnetic moment of each Cu ion is very small, 0.033(7) Bohr magneton even at T=0.35K, and has unusual temperature dependence with a cusp at Tc2=1.5K reminiscent of a phase transition. We argue that slow dynamics of stripe-like cooperative magnetic defects in tetragonal a-c planes yield this anisotropic frozen state.

Magnetic correlations and quantum criticality in the insulating antiferromagnetic, insulating spin liquid, renormalized Fermi liquid, and metallic antiferromagnetic phases of the Mott system V_2O_3

Magnetic correlations in all four phases of pure and doped vanadium sesquioxide V_2O_3 have been examined by magnetic thermal neutron scattering. While the antiferromagnetic insulator can be accounted for by a Heisenberg localized spin model, the long range order in the antiferromagnetic metal is an incommensurate spin-density-wave, resulting from a Fermi surface nesting instability. Spin dynamics in the strongly correlated metal are dominated by spin fluctuations in the Stoner electron-hole continuum. Furthermore, our results in metallic V_2O_3 represent an unprecedentedly complete characterization of the spin fluctuations near a metallic quantum critical point, and provide quantitative support for the SCR theory for itinerant antiferromagnets in the small moment limit. Dynamic magnetic correlations for energy smaller than k_BT in the paramagnetic insulator carry substantial magnetic spectral weight. However, the correlation length extends only to the nearest neighbor distance. The phase transition to the antiferromagnetic insulator introduces a sudden switching of magnetic correlations to a different spatial periodicity which indicates a sudden change in the underlying spin Hamiltonian. To describe this phase transition and also the unusual short range order in the paramagnetic state, it seems necessary to take into account the orbital degrees of freedom associated with the degenerate d-orbitals at the Fermi level in V_2O_3.

Characterization of a Quasi-One Dimensional Spin-1/2 Magnet which is Gapless and Paramagnetic for g mu_B H <= J and k_B T << J

High field mangetization, field-dependent specific heat measurements, and zero field inelastic magnetic neutron scattering have been used to explore the magnetic properties of copper pyrazine dinitrate (Cu(C4H4N2)(NO3)2). The material is an ideal one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest neighbor exchange constant J=0.90(1) meV and chains extending along the orthorhombic a-direction. As opposed to previosly studied molecular-based spin-1/2 magnetic systems, coppyer pyrazine dinitrate remains gapless and paramagnetic for g mu_B H/J at least up to 1.4 and for k_B T/J at least down to 0.03 this makes the material an excellent model system for exploring the T=0 critical line which is expected in the H - T phase diagram on the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. As a first example of such a study we present accurate measurements of the Sommerfeld constant of the spinon gas versus g mu_B H/J < 1.4 which reveal a decrease of the averages spinon velocity by 32% in that field range. The results are in excellent agreement with numerical calculations based on the Bethe ansatz with no adjustable parameters.

Tuning the spin Hamiltonian of NENP by external pressure: a neutron scattering study

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of antiferromagnetic spin dynamics in the Haldane chain compound Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2ClO4 (NENP) under external hydrostatic pressure P = 2.5 GPa. At ambient pressure, the magnetic excitations in NENP are dominated by a long-lived triplet mode with a gap which is split by orthorhombic crystalline anisotropy into a lower doublet centered at $Δ_\perp\approx$ 1.2meV and a singlet at $Δ_\parallel\approx$ 2.5meV. With pressure we observe appreciable shifts in these levels, which move to $Δ_\perp{(2.5GPa)}\approx$ 1.45 meV and $Δ_\parallel(2.5GPa)\approx$ 2.2meV. The dispersion of these modes in the crystalline c-direction perpendicular to the chain was measured here for the first time, and can be accounted for by an interchain exchange J'_c approximately 3e-4*J which changes only slightly with pressure. Since the average gap value $Δ_H\approx$ 1.64 meV remains almost unchanged with P, we conclude that in NENP the application of external pressure does not affect the intrachain coupling J appreciably, but does produce a significant decrease of the single-ion anisotropy constant from D/J = 0.16(2) at ambient pressure to D/J = 0.09(7) at P = 2.5 GPa.

Spin gap in the Quasi-One-Dimensional S=1/2 Antiferromagnet: Cu2(1,4-diazacycloheptane)2Cl4

Cu_{2}(1,4-diazacycloheptane)_{2}Cl_{4} contains double chains of spin 1/2 Cu^{2+} ions. We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on this material. The magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, shows a rounded maximum at T = 8 K indicative of a low dimensional antiferromagnet with no zero field magnetic phase transition. We compare the $χ(T)$ data to exact diagonalization results for various one dimensional spin Hamiltonians and find excellent agreement for a spin ladder with intra-rung coupling $J_1 = 1.143(3)$ meV and two mutually frustrating inter-rung interactions: $J_2 = 0.21(3)$ meV and $J_3 = 0.09(5)$ meV. The specific heat in zero field is exponentially activated with an activation energy $Δ= 0.89(1)$ meV. A spin gap is also found through inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples which identify a band of magnetic excitations for $0.8 < \hbarω< 1.5$ meV. Using sum-rules we derive an expression for the dynamic spin correlation function associated with non-interacting propagating triplets in a spin ladder. The van-Hove singularities of such a model are not observed in our scattering data indicating that magnetic excitations in Cu_{2}(1,4-diazacycloheptane)_{2}Cl_{4} are more complicated. For magnetic fields above $H_{c1} \simeq 7.2$ T specific heat data versus temperature show anomalies indicating a phase transition to an ordered state below T = 1 K.

Less than 50% sublattice polarization in an insulating S=3/2 kagome' antiferromagnet at low T

We have found weak long range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-two-dimensional insulating oxide $ KCr_3(OD)_6(SO_4)_2$ which contains Cr$^{3+}$ S=3/2 ions on a kagomé lattice. In a sample with $\approx$ 76% occupancy of the chromium sites the ordered moment is 1.1(3)$μ_B$ per chromium ion which is only one third of the Néel value $gμ_BS=3μ_B$. The magnetic unit cell equals the chemical unit cell, a situation which is favored by inter-plane interactions. Gapless quantum spin-fluctuations ($Δ/k_B <0.25$K) with a bandwidth of 60K >> $T_N$ = 1.6K are the dominant contribution to the spin correlation function, $S(Q,ω)$ in the ordered phase.

Direct Observation of Field-Induced Incommensurate Fluctuations in a One-Dimensional S=1/2 Antiferromagnet

Neutron scattering from copper benzoate, Cu(C6D5COO)2 3D2O, provides the first direct experimental evidence for field-dependent incommensurate low energy modes in a one-dimensional spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnet. Soft modes occur for wavevectors q=π+- dq(H) where dq(H) ~ 2 πM(H)/gμ_B as predicted by Bethe ansatz and spinon descriptions of the S = 1/2 chain. Unexpected was a field-induced energy gap $Δ(H) \propto H^α$, where $α= 0.65(3)$ as determined from specific heat measurements. At H = 7 T (gμ_B H/J = 0.52), the magnitude of the gap varies from 0.06 - 0.3 J depending on the orientation of the applied field.

Two routes to metallic behavior for a Kondo insulator

Cold neutron spectroscopy was performed on CeNi_{1-x}Cu_xSn to investigate how the magnetic gap in the 'Kondo insulator' CeNiSn is destroyed by temperature (T), chemical substitution (x), and external magnetic field. Upon doping, the spin gap collapses and magnetic Bragg peaks occur initially (x = 0.13) at the commensurate wave vectors Q = (0,m/2,l) (m,l integer) where the higher-energy (4.1 meV) gap is located for x = 0. A magnetic field smooths the sharp spin gap structure in both momentum and energy, while leaving the associated static susceptibility unchanged, as does raising T.

Dramatic Switching of Magnetic Exchange in a Classic Transition Metal Oxide: Evidence for Orbital Ordering

Spin correlations in metallic and insulating phases of $V_2O_3$ and its derivatives are investigated using magnetic neutron scattering. Metallic samples have incommensurate spin correlations varying little with hole doping. Paramagnetic insulating samples have spin correlations only among near neighbors. The transition from either of these phases into the low temperature insulating antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by an abrupt change of dynamic magnetic short range order. Our results support the idea that the transition into the antiferromagnetic insulator is also an orbital ordering transition.
