Quantum Theory of Transmission Line Resonator-Assisted Cooling of a Micromechanical Resonator

We propose a quantum description of the cooling of a micromechanical flexural oscillator by a one-dimensional transmission line resonator via a force that resembles cavity radiation pressure. The mechanical oscillator is capacitively coupled to the central conductor of the transmission line resonator. At the optimal point, the micromechanical oscillator can be cooled close to the ground state, and the cooling can be measured by homodyne detection of the output microwave signal.

The single-atom box: bosonic staircase and effects of parity

We have developed a theory of a Josephson junction formed by two tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential in the regime of strong atom-atom interaction for an arbitrary total number $N$ of bosons in the condensates. The tunnel resonances in the junction are shown to be periodically spaced by the interaction energy, forming a single-atom staircase sensitive to the parity of $N$ even for large $N$. One of the manifestations of the staircase structure is the periodic modulation with the bias energy of the visibility of the interference pattern in lattices of junctions.

Measuring the Momentum of a Nanomechanical Oscillator through the Use of Two Tunnel Junctions

We propose a way to measure the momentum p of a nanomechanical oscillator. The p-detector is based on two tunnel junctions in a Aharonov-Bohm-type setup. One of the tunneling amplitudes depends on the motion of the oscillator, the other one not. Although the coupling between the detector and the oscillator is assumed to be linear in the position x of the oscillator, it turns out that the finite-frequency noise output of the detector will in general contain a term proportional to the momentum spectrum of the oscillator. This is a true quantum phenomenon, which can be realized in practice if the phase of the tunneling amplitude of the detector is tuned by the Aharonov-Bohm flux Phi to a p-sensitive value.

Density correlations in ultracold Fermi systems within the exact Richardson solution

We discuss the occupation number correlations in an ultracold system of interacting fermionic atoms. For a system with a special energy-level distribution, viz. two multiply-degenerate levels, explicit expressions for the correlation functions are derived in a canonical approach using the exact ground state wavefunction of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. We evaluate the correlators numerically for different interaction strength and find analytical expressions in some limiting cases. Due to the underlying fermionic nature of the pairs the occupations are predominantly anti-correlated and their statistics is a multinomial distribution.

Dynamic method to distinguish between left- and right-handed chiral molecules

We study quantum systems with broken symmetry that can be modelled as cyclic three-level atoms with coexisting one- and two-photon transitions. They can be selectively optically excited to any state. As an example, we show that left- and right-handed chiral molecules starting in the same initial states can evolve into different final states by a purely dynamic transfer process. That means, left- and right-handed molecules can be distinguished purely dynamically.

The connection between noise and quantum correlations in a double quantum dot

We investigate the current and noise characteristics of a double quantum dot system. The strong correlations induced by the Coulomb interaction create entangled two-electron states and lead to signatures in the transport properties. We show that the interaction parameter phi, which measures the admixture of the double-occupancy contribution to the singlet state and thus the degree of entanglement, can be directly accessed through the Fano factor of super-Poissonian shot noise.

Improved position measurement of nano electromechanical systems using cross correlations

We consider position measurements using the cross-correlated output of two tunnel junction position detectors. Using a fully quantum treatment, we calculate the equation of motion for the density matrix of the coupled detector-detector-mechanical oscillator system. After discussing the presence of a bound on the peak-to-background ratio in a position measurement using a single detector, we show how one can use detector cross correlations to overcome this bound. We analyze two different possible experimental realizations of the cross correlation measurement and show that in both cases the maximum cross-correlated output is obtained when using twin detectors and applying equal bias to each tunnel junction. Furthermore, we show how the double-detector setup can be exploited to drastically reduce the added displacement noise of the oscillator.

Generalized Stern-Gerlach Effect for Chiral Molecules

The Stern-Gerlach effect is well-known as spin-dependent splitting of a beam of atoms with magnetic moments by a magnetic-field gradient. Here, we show that an induced gauge potential may lead to a similar effect for chiral molecules. In the presence of three inhomogeneous light fields, the center-of-mass of a three-level chiral molecule is subject to an optically induced gauge potential, and the internal dynamics of the molecules can be described as an adiabatic evolution in the reduced pseudo-spin subspace of the two lowest energy levels. We demonstrate numerically that such an induced gauge potential can lead to observable pseudo-spin dependent and chirality-dependent generalized Stern-Gerlach effects for mixed left- and right-handed chiral molecules under realistic conditions.

Time-dependent Fröhlich transformation approach for two-atom entanglement generated by successive passage through a cavity

Time-dependent Fröhlich transformations can be used to derive an effective Hamiltonian for a class of quantum systems with time-dependent perturbations. We use such a transformation for a system with time-dependent atom-photon coupling induced by the classical motion of two atoms in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic field. We calculate the entanglement between the two atoms resulting from their motion through a cavity as a function of their initial position difference and velocity.

Temperature dependence of Coulomb drag between finite-length quantum wires

We evaluate the Coulomb drag current in two finite-length Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid wires coupled by an electrostatic backscattering interaction. The drag current in one wire shows oscillations as a function of the bias voltage applied to the other wire, reflecting interferences of the plasmon standing waves in the interacting wires. In agreement with this picture, the amplitude of the current oscillations is reduced with increasing temperature. This is a clear signature of non-Fermi-liquid physics because for coupled Fermi liquids the drag resistance is always expected to increase as the temperature is raised.

Role of interference in quantum state transfer through spin chains

We examine the role that interference plays in quantum state transfer through several types of finite spin chains, including chains with isotropic Heisenberg interaction between nearest neighbors, chains with reduced coupling constants to the spins at the end of the chain, and chains with anisotropic coupling constants. We evaluate quantitatively both the interference corresponding to the propagation of the entire chain, and the interference in the effective propagation of the first and last spins only, treating the rest of the chain as black box. We show that perfect quantum state transfer is possible without quantum interference, and provide evidence that the spin chains examined realize interference-free quantum state transfer to a good approximation.

Density correlations in ultracold atomic Fermi gases

We investigate density fluctuations in a coherent ensemble of interacting fermionic atoms. Adapting the concept of full counting statistics, well-known from quantum optics and mesoscopic electron transport, we study second-order as well as higher-order correlators of density fluctuations. Using the mean-field BCS state to describe the whole interval between the BCS limit and the BEC limit, we obtain an exact expression for the cumulant-generating function of the density fluctuations of an atomic cloud. In the two-dimensional case, we obtain a closed analytical expression. Poissonian fluctuations of a molecular condensate on the BEC side are strongly suppressed on the BCS side. The size of the fluctuations in the BCS limit is a direct measure of the pairing potential. We also discuss the BEC-BCS crossover of the third cumulant and the temperature dependence of the second cumulant.

Spin-transfer torque in magnetic multilayer nanopillars

We consider a quasi one-dimensional configuration consisting of two small pieces of ferromagnetic material separated by a metallic one and contacted by two metallic leads. A spin-polarized current is injected from one lead. Our goal is to investigate the correlation induced between the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets by spin-transfer torque. This torque results from the interaction between the magnetizations and the spin polarization of the current. We discuss the dynamics of a single ferromagnet, the extension to the case of two ferromagnets, and give some estimates for the parameters based on experiments.

Electrical transport through a single-electron transistor strongly coupled to an oscillator

We investigate electrical transport through a single-electron transistor coupled to a nanomechanical oscillator. Using a combination of a master-equation approach and a numerical Monte Carlo method, we calculate the average current and the current noise in the strong-coupling regime, studying deviations from previously derived analytic results valid in the limit of weak-coupling. After generalizing the weak-coupling theory to enable the calculation of higher cumulants of the current, we use our numerical approach to study how the third cumulant is affected in the strong-coupling regime. In this case, we find an interesting crossover between a weak-coupling transport regime where the third cumulant heavily depends on the frequency of the oscillator to one where it becomes practically independent of this parameter. Finally, we study the spectrum of the transport noise and show that the two peaks found in the weak-coupling limit merge on increasing the coupling strength. Our calculation of the frequency-dependence of the noise also allows to describe how transport-induced damping of the mechanical oscillations is affected in the strong-coupling regime.

Use of dynamical coupling for improved quantum state transfer

We propose a method to improve quantum state transfer in transmission lines. The idea is to localize the information on the last qubit of a transmission line, by dynamically varying the coupling constants between the first and the last pair of qubits. The fidelity of state transfer is higher then in a chain with fixed coupling constants. The effect is stable against small fluctuations in the system parameters.

Overscreening Diamagnetism in Cylindrical Superconductor-Normal Metal-Heterostructures

We study the linear diamagnetic response of a superconducting cylinder coated by a normal-metal layer due to the proximity effect using the clean limit quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. We compare the results for the susceptibility with those for a planar geometry. Interestingly, for $R\sim d$ the cylinder exhibits a stronger overscreening of the magnetic field, i.e., at the interface to the superconductor it can be less than (-1/2) of the applied field. Even for $R\gg d$, the diamagnetism can be increased as compared to the planar case, viz. the magnetic susceptibility $4πχ$ becomes smaller than -3/4. This behaviour can be explained by an intriguing spatial oscillation of the magnetic field in the normal layer.

Controlling spin in an electronic interferometer with spin-active interfaces

We consider electronic current transport through a ballistic one-dimensional quantum wire connected to two ferromagnetic leads. We study the effects of the spin-dependence of interfacial phase shifts (SDIPS) acquired by electrons upon scattering at the boundaries of the wire. The SDIPS produces a spin splitting of the wire resonant energies which is tunable with the gate voltage and the angle between the ferromagnetic polarizations. This property could be used for manipulating spins. In particular, it leads to a giant magnetoresistance effect with a sign tunable with the gate voltage and the magnetic field applied to the wire.

Site-selective adsorption of naphthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride on Ag(110): First-principles calculations

The mechanism of adsorption of the 1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA) molecule on the Ag(110) surface is elucidated on the basis of extensive density functional theory calculations. This molecule, together with its perylene counterpart, PTCDA, are archetype organic semiconductors investigated experimentally over the past 20 years. We find that the bonding of the molecule to the substrate is highly site-selective, being determined by electron transfer to the LUMO of the molecule and local electrostatic attraction between negatively charged carboxyl oxygens and positively charged silver atoms in [1-10] atomic rows. The adsorption energy in the most stable site is 0.9eV. A similar mechanism is expected to govern the adsorption of PTCDA on Ag(110) as well.
