Diamagnetic Response of Normal-metal -- Superconductor Double Layers

The magnetic response of a proximity-coupled superconductor-normal metal sandwich is studied within the framework of the quasiclassical theory. The magnetization is evaluated for finite values of the applied magnetic field (linear and nonlinear response) at arbitrary temperatures and is used to fit recent experimental low-temperature data. The hysteretic behavior predicted from a Ginzburg-Landau approach and observed in experiments is obtained within the quasiclassical theory and shown to exist also outside the Ginzburg-Landau region.

Quantum-Phase Transitions of Interacting Bosons and the Supersolid Phase

We investigate the properties of strongly interacting bosons in two dimensions at zero temperature using mean-field theory, a variational Ansatz for the ground state wave function, and Monte Carlo methods. With on-site and short-range interactions a rich phase diagram is obtained. Apart from the homogeneous superfluid and Mott-insulating phases, inhomogeneous charge-density wave phases appear, that are stabilized by the finite-range interaction. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates the existence of a supersolid phase, in which both long-range order (related to the charge-density wave) and off-diagonal long-range order coexist. We also obtain the critical exponents for the various phase transitions.

Tunnel junctions of unconventional superconductors

The phenomenology of Josephson tunnel junctions between unconventional superconductors is developed further. In contrast to s-wave superconductors, for d-wave superconductors the direction dependence of the tunnel matrix elements that describe the barrier is relevant. We find the full I-V characteristics and comment on the thermodynamical properties of these junctions. They depend sensitively on the relative orientation of the superconductors. The I-V characteristics differ from the normal s-wave RSJ-like behavior.

Proximity Effect and Charging in Mesoscopic Normal Metal - Superconductor Junction Systems

Charging effects in mesoscopic junctions suppress the tunneling of electrons. In normal metal - superconductor systems they also suppress the proximity effect, thereby revealing the nature of the microscopic processes and of the ground state of the system. The effect can be made visible since the charging and proximity effect and hence the transport properties of the system can be modulated by gate voltages. If the superconducting electrode is isolated, electron number parity effect lead to an even-odd asymmetry in the proximity effect.

Charging Effects in Ultrasmall Quantum Dots in the Presence of Time-Varying Fields

The influence of charging effects on time-dependent transport in small semiconductor quantum dots with arbitrary level spectra is studied. Starting from an explicit time-dependent tunneling Hamiltonian, a non-Markovian Master equation is derived which is also valid in the nonlinear response regime. The many-body nonequilibrium distribution functions of the dot are calculated and the I-V characteristic of the structure including the displacement currents is obtained. New resonant features show up in the Coulomb oscillations and in the Coulomb staircase, and a new possibility to realize electronic pumps is described.
