Vanishing RKKY interactions in Ce-based cage compounds

We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds Ce$T_{2}$Cd$_{20}$ ($T$ = Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the $Γ_7$ doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions. Consequently, for the $Γ_7$ doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited $Γ_8$ quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the millikelvin range.

Evolution of non-Kramers Doublets in Magnetic Field PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ and PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$

Praseodymium-based 1-2-20 cage compounds Pr$T_2X_{20}$ ($T$ is generally Ti, V, Nb, Ru, Rh, Ir; and $X$ is either Al, Zn or Cd) provide yet another platform to study non-trivial electronic states of matter ranging from topological and magnetic orders to unconventional multipolar orders and superconductivity. In this paper, we report measurements of the electronic heat capacity in two Pr-based 1-2-20 materials: PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ and PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$. We find that the lowest energy multiplet of the Pr $4f^2$ valence configuration is a $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet and the first excited triplet is assumed to be a magnetic $Γ_5$. By analyzing the dependence of the energy splitting between the ground and first excited singlet states on external magnetic field, we found that the maximum in the heat capacity corresponding to the Schottky anomaly in PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$, unlike PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$, shows pronounced linear dependence on external magnetic field at higher field values. This effect is associated with the exchange interactions between the field-induced magnetic dipole moments.

Quantum criticality in Ce$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$CoIn$_5$

Motivated by the possibility of observing the co-existence between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion Ce$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$CoIn$_5$ alloys, we studied how the samarium substitution on the cerium site affects the magnetic field-tuned-quantum criticality of stoicheometric CeCoIn$_5$ by performing specific heat and resistivity measurements. By applying an external magnetic field, we have observed Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid crossovers in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat normalized by temperature and of the resistivity. We obtained the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) by extrapolating to zero temperature the temperature - magnetic field dependence at which the crossovers take place. Furthermore, a scaling analysis of the electronic specific heat is used to confirm the existence of the QCP. We have found that the magnitude of the magnetic-field-induced QCP decreases with increasing samarium concentration. Our analysis of heat capacity and resistivity data reveals a zero-field QCP for $x_\textrm{cr} \approx 0.15$, which falls inside the region where Sm ions antiferromagnetism and superconductivity co-exist.

Schottky anomaly and short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in filled skutterudites Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$

By performing a series of thermodynamic measurements in an applied magnetic field $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, we investigated the effects of Eu substitution on the Pr sites in filled skutterudite compound Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($ 0 \leq x \leq 1$). A heat capacity Schottky anomaly is present over the whole doping range. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, these Schottky anomaly peaks shift to lower temperature with increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. We argue that this behavior reflects the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments, as the AFM transition is suppressed by $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. The Schottky peaks in the samples with $x \leq 0.5$ shift to higher temperatures with increasing magnetic field, signaling the presence of an internal magnetic field due to short-range AFM correlations induced by magnetic moments of neighboring Eu sites. In low $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the Schottky gaps show a non-linear relationship with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ as the magnetic moments become weakly magnetized. In high $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the magnetic moments of Eu sites become completely aligned with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. Thus, increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ does not further increase the magnetization, hence the Schottky gaps increase linearly with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$

Pressure tuned superconductivity and normal state behavior in Ba(Fe$_{0.943}$Co$_{0.057}$)$_2$As$_2$ near the antiferromagnetic boundary

Superconductivity in iron pnictides is unconventional and pairing may be mediated by magnetic fluctuations in the Fe-sublattice. Pressure is a clean method to explore superconductivity in iron based superconductors by tuning the ground state continuously without introducing disorder. Here we present a systematic high pressure transport study in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with $x=$ 0.057, which is near the antiferromagnetic instability. Resistivity $ρ=ρ_0+AT^{n}$ was studied under applied pressure up to 7.90 GPa. The parameter $n$ approaches a minimum value of $n\approx 1$ at a critical pressure $P_c =$ 3.65 GPa. Near $P_c$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ reaches a maximum value of 25.8 K. In addition, the superconducting diamagnetism at 2 K shows a sudden change around the same critical pressure. These results may be associated with a possible quantum critical point hidden inside the superconducting dome, near optimum $T_c$.

Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the superconducting state of filled skutterudite alloys Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$

Motivated by current research efforts towards exploring the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in multiband electronic systems, we have investigated the effects of Eu substitution through thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite alloys Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$. An increase in Eu concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature consistent with an increase of magnetic entropy due to Eu local moments. While the low-temperature heat capacity anomaly is present over the whole doping range, we find that in alloys with $x\leq0.5$ the Schottky peaks in the heat capacity in the superconducting state appear to be due to Zeeman splitting by an internal magnetic field. Our theoretical modeling suggests that this field is a result of the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the europium ions. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, the peaks in the heat capacity signal the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments.

Orbital and Pauli limiting effects in heavily doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We investigated the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-based lightly disordered superconductor Ba$_{0.05}$K$_{0.95}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in external magnetic field H applied along the FeAs layers (H//ab planes). The superconducting (SC) transition temperature for this doping level is T$_c$ = 6.6 K. Our analysis of the specific heat C(T,H) measured for T < T$_c$ implies a sign change of the superconducting order parameter across different Fermi pockets. We provide experimental evidence for the three components superconducting order parameter. We find that all three components have values which are comparable with the previously reported ones for the stochiometric compound KFe$_2$As$_2$. Our data for C(T,H) and resistivity rho(T,H) can be interpreted in favor of the dominant orbital contribution to the pair-breaking mechanism at low fields, while Pauli limiting effect dominates at high fields, giving rise to a gapless superconducting state with only the leading non-zero gap.

From local moment to mixed-valence regime in Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 alloys

We investigated the onset of the many-body coherence in the f-orbital single crystalline alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 through thermodynamic and magneto-transport measurements. Our study shows the evolution of the many-body electronic state as the Kondo lattice of Ce moments is transformed into an array of Ce impurities. Specifically, we observe a smooth crossover from the predominantly localized Ce moment regime to the predominantly itinerant Yb f-electronic states regime for about 50% of Yb doping. Our analysis of the residual resistivity data unveils the presence of correlations between Yb ions, while from our analysis of specific heat data we conclude that for 0.65<x<0.775, ytterbium f-electrons strongly interact with the conduction electrons while the Ce moments remain completely decoupled. The sub-linear temperature dependence of resistivity across the whole range of Yb concentrations suggest the presence of a nontrivial scattering mechanism for the conduction electrons.

Filamentary superconductivity across the phase diagram of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$

We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02<x<0.04$, the doping concentration where bulk SC emerges. Based on these results and the recent report of an electronic anisotropy maximum for 0.02 $\leq x \leq$ 0.04 [Science 329, 824 (2010)], we speculate that, besides spin fluctuations, orbital fluctuations may also play an important role in the emergence of SC in iron-based superconductors.

Evidence for filamentary superconductivity nucleated at antiphase domain walls in antiferromagnetic CaFe$_2$As$_2$

Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, are fully suppressed by $H^*\approx 15$ T, and suggest the presence of filamentary superconductivity nucleated at the antiphase domain walls in this material.

Strong magnetic fluctuations in superconducting state of CeCoIn$_5$

We show results on the vortex core dissipation through current-voltage measurements under applied pressure and magnetic field in the superconducting phase of CeCoIn$_5$. We find that as soon as the system becomes superconducting, the vortex core resistivity increases sharply as the temperature and magnetic field decrease. The sharp increase in flux flow resistivity is due to quasiparticle scattering on critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The strength of magnetic fluctuations below the superconducting transition suggests that magnetism is complimentary to superconductivity and therefore must be considered in order to fully account for the low-temperature properties of CeCoIn$_5$.

Stray field and superconducting surface spin valve effect in La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ bilayers

Electronic transport and magnetization measurements were performed on La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (LCMO/YBCO) bilayers below the superconducting transition temperature in order to study the interaction between magnetism and superconductivity. This study shows that a substantial number of weakly pinned vortices are induced in the YBCO layer by the large out-of-plane stray field in the domain walls. Their motion gives rise to large dissipation peaks at the coercive field. The angular dependent magnetoresistance (MR) data reveal the interaction between the stripe domain structure present in the LCMO layer and the vortices and anti-vortices induced in the YBCO layer by the out-of-plane stray field. In addition, this study shows that a superconducting surface spin valve effect is present in these bilayers as a result of the relative orientation between the magnetization at the LCMO/YBCO interface and the magnetization in the interior of the LCMO layer that can be tuned by the rotation of a small $H$. This latter finding will facilitate the development of superconductive magnetoresistive memory devices. These low-magnetic field MR data, furthermore, suggest that triplet superconductivity is induced in the LCMO layer, which is consistent with recent reports of triplet superconductivity in LCMO/YBCO/LCMO trilayers and LCMO/YBCO bilayers.

Anomalous Paramagnetic Magnetization in Mixed State of CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals

Magnetization and torque measurements were performed on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals to study the mixed-state thermodynamics. These measurements allow the determination of both paramagnetic and vortex responses in the mixed-state magnetization. The paramagnetic magnetization is suppressed in the mixed state with the spin susceptibility increasing with increasing magnetic field. The dependence of spin susceptibility on magnetic field is due to the fact that heavy electrons contribute both to superconductivity and paramagnetism and a large Zeeman effect exists in this system. No anomaly in the vortex response was found within the investigated temperature and field range.

Doping Dependence of Vortex Regimes in Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ Single Crystals

Magnetic relaxation measurements on a series of Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ ($x = 0.13, 0.34, 0.47$) single crystals were performed over a large field and temperature range in order to investigate the characteristics of the vortex matter across the second magnetization peak (SMP). The magnitude of the SMP varies non-monotonically with the Pr concentration; i.e., the irreversible magnetization normalized by its value at the onset field $H_{on}$ displays a maximum for the $x = 0.34$ single crystal. The two characteristic fields, $H_{on}$ and $H_{sp}$, follow different temperature $T$ dependences: $H_{on} \propto T^{ν_{on}}$ and $H_{sp} \propto [1-(T/T_{c})^{2}]^{ν_{sp}}$. The extracted values of the apparent activation energy $U^\ast$ and the creep exponent $μ$ display a maximum at a field $H_{on} < H^\ast < H_{sp}$. Their field dependences point toward the coexistence of both elastic and plastic creep for $H > H_{on}$. The degree of participation of each creep mechanism is determined by the charge carrier density, which controls both the elastic properties of the vortex matter and the pinning potential.

Pairing Symmetry of CeCoIn$_5$ Detected by In-plane Torque Measurements

In-plane torque measurements were performed on heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals in the temperature $T$ range 1.8 K $\leq T \leq 10$ K and applied magnetic field $H$ up to 14 T. The normal-state torque is given by $τ_n \propto H^4(1+T/T_K)^{-1}\sin 4ϕ$. The reversible part of the mixed-state torque, obtained after subtracting the corresponding normal state torque, shows also a four-fold symmetry. In addition, sharp peaks are present in the irreversible torque at angles of $π/$4, 3$π$/4, 5$π$/4, 7$π$/4, etc. Both the four-fold symmetry in the reversible torque and the sharp peaks in the irreversible torque of the mixed state imply $d_{xy}$ symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. The field and temperature dependences of the reversible mixed-state torque provide further evidence for $d_{xy}$ wave symmetry. The four-fold symmetry in the normal state has a different origin since it has different field and temperature dependences than the one in the mixed state. The possible reasons of the normal state four-fold symmetry are discussed.

Nonlinear paramagnetic magnetization in the mixed state of CeCoIn_5

Torque and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields $H$ up to 14 T were performed on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals. The amplitude of the paramagnetic torque shows an $H^{2.3}$ dependence in the mixed state and an $H^{2}$ dependence in the normal state. In addition, the mixed-state magnetizations for both $H\parallel c$ and $H\parallel ab$ axes show anomalous behavior after the subtraction of the corresponding paramagnetic contributions as linear extrapolations of the normal-state magnetization. These experimental results point towards a nonlinear paramagnetic magnetization in the mixed state of CeCoIn$_5$, which is a result of the fact that both orbital and Pauli limiting effects dominate in the mixed state.

Scaling Behavior of Angular Dependent Resistivity in CeCoIn$_5$: Possible Evidence for d-Wave Density Waves

In-plane angular dependent resistivity ADR was measured in the non-Fermi liquid regime of CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals at temperatures $T \le 20$ K and in magnetic fields $H$ up to 14 T. Two scaling behaviors were identified in low field region where resistivity shows T-linear dependence, separated by a critical angle $θ_{c}$ which is determined by the anisotropy of CeCoIn$_5$; i.e., ADR depends only on the perpendicular (parallel) field component below (above) $θ_c$. These scaling behaviors and other salient features of ADR are consistent with d-wave density waves.

Angular Dependent Torque Measurements on CeCoIn$_5$ Single Crystals

Angular dependent torque measurements were performed on single crystals of CeCoIn$_5$, a heavy fermion superconductor ($T_{c0}$ = 2.3 K), in the temperature, $T$, range 1.9 K $\leq T \leq $ 20 K and magnetic fields $H$ up to 14 T. A large paramagnetic effect is found in the normal state. Torque measurements in the mixed state were also performed. The torque curves show sharp hysteresis peaks at $θ= 90^{o}$ ($θ$ is the angle between $H$ and the $c-$axis of the crystal), a result of intrinsic pinning of vortices. The anisotropy $γ\equiv \sqrt{m_{c}/m_{a}}$ in the mixed state was determined from the reversible part of the vortex contribution to the torque signal using Kogan's model [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{38}, 7049 (1988)]. The anisotropy $γ$ decreases with increasing magnetic field and temperature. The fact that $γ$ is not a constant points towards a multiband scenario in this heavy fermion material.
