The Gaia-ESO Survey: the Galactic Thick to Thin Disc transition

(Abridged) We have used the atmospheric parameters, [alpha/Fe] abundances and radial velocities, determined from the Gaia-ESO Survey GIRAFFE spectra of FGK-type stars (iDR1), to provide a chemo-kinematical characterisation of the disc stellar populations. We focuss on a subsample of 1016 stars with high quality parameters, covering the volume |Z|<4.5kpc and R in the range 2-13kpc. We have identified a thin to thick disc separation in the [alpha/Fe] vs [M/H] plane, thanks to the presence of a low-density region in the number density distribution. The thick disc stars seem to lie in progressively thinner layers above the Galactic plane, as metallicity increases and [alpha/Fe] decreases. The thin disc population presents a constant value of the mean distance to the plane at all metallicities. Our data confirm the already known correlations between V_phi and [M/H] for the two discs. For the thick disc sequence, a study of the possible contamination by thin disc stars suggests a gradient up to 64km/s/dex. The distributions of V_phi, V_Z, and orbital parameters are analysed for the chemically separated samples. Concerning the gradients with galactocentric radius, we find for the thin disc a flat behaviour of V_phi, a [M/H] gradient of -0.058dex/kpc and a small positive [alpha/Fe] gradient. For the thick disc, flat gradients in [M/H] and [alpha/Fe] are derived. Our chemo-kinematical analysis suggests a picture in which the thick disc seems to have experienced a settling process, during which its rotation increased progressively, and, possibly, the V_phi dispersion decreased. At [M/H]-0.25dex and [alpha/Fe]0.1dex, the mean characteristics of the thick disc in distance to the Galactic plane, V_phi, V_phi dispersion and eccentricity agree with those of the thin disc stars, suggesting a possible connection between these populations at a certain epoch of the disc evolution.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Properties of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 4815

NGC 4815 is a populous ~500 Myr open cluster at a Galactocentric radius of 7 kpc observed in the first six months of the Gaia-ESO Survey. Located in the inner Galactic disk, NGC 4815 is an important tracer of the abundance gradient, where few intermediate age open clusters are found. We use the survey derived radial velocities, stellar atmospheric parameters, metallicity, and elemental abundances for stars targeted as potential members of this cluster to carry out an analysis of cluster properties. The radial velocity distribution of stars in the cluster field is used to define the cluster systemic velocity and derive likely cluster membership for stars observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey. We investigate the distributions of Fe and Fe-peak elements, alpha-elements, and the light elements Na and Al and characterize the cluster's internal chemical homogeneity comparing it to the properties of radial velocity non-member stars. Utilizing these cluster properties, the cluster color-magnitude diagram is analyzed and theoretical isochrones are fit to derive cluster reddening, distance, and age. NGC 4815 is found to have a mean [Fe/H]=+0.03. Elemental abundances of cluster members show typically small internal variation, with internal dispersions of ~0.05 dex. [Ca/Fe] and [Si/Fe] show solar ratios, but [Mg/Fe] is moderately enhanced, while [Ti/Fe] appears slightly deficient. As with many open clusters, [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] are enhanced, [Na/Fe] significantly so, although the role of internal mixing and the assumption of LTE in the analysis remain to be investigated. From isochrone fits to color-magnitude diagrams, we find a cluster age of 0.5 to 0.63 Gyr, a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.59 to 0.65, and a true distance modulus (m-M) = 11.95 to 12.20, depending on the choice of theoretical models, leading to a Galactocentric distance of 6.9 kpc.

Gaia FGK Benchmark Stars - Metallicity

To calibrate automatic pipelines that determine atmospheric parameters of stars, one needs a sample of stars -- ``benchmark stars'' -- with well defined parameters to be used as a reference We provide a detailed documentation of the determination of the iron abundance of the 34 FGK-type benchmark stars selected to be the pillars for calibration of the one billion Gaia stars. They cover a wide range of temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities. Up to seven different methods were used to analyze an observed spectral library of high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio. The metallicity was determined assuming a value of effective temperature and surface gravity obtained from fundamental relations, i.e. these parameters were known a priori independently from the spectra. We present a set of metallicity values obtained in a homogeneous way for our sample of Benchmark Stars. In addition to this value, we provide a detailed documentation of the associated uncertainties. Finally, we report for the first time a value of the metallicity of the cool giant psi Phe.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Reevaluation of the parameters of the open cluster Trumpler 20 using photometry and spectroscopy

Trumpler 20 is an old open cluster (OC) located toward the Galactic centre, at about 3 kpc from the Sun and $\sim$7 kpc from the Galactic centre. Its position makes this cluster particularly interesting in the framework of the chemical properties of the Galactic disc because very few old OCs reside in the inner part of the disc. For this reason it has been selected as a cluster target of the Gaia-ESO Survey, and spectra of many stars in the main sequence and red clump phases are now available. Moreover, although it has been studied by several authors in the past, no consensus on the evolutionary status of Tr 20 has been reached. The heavy contamination of field stars (the line of sight of Tr 20 crosses the Carina spiral arm) complicates a correct interpretation. Another interesting aspect of the cluster is that it shows a broadened main-sequence turn-off and a prominent and extended red-clump, characteristics that are not easily explained by classical evolutionary models. Exploiting both spectroscopic information from the Gaia-ESO Survey (and the ESO archive) and literature photometry, we obtain a detailed and accurate analysis of the properties of the cluster. We make use of the first accurate metallicity measurement ever obtained from several spectra of red clump stars, and of cluster membership determination using radial velocities. According to the evolutionary models adopted, we find that Tr 20 has an age in the range 1.35-1.66 Gyr, an average reddening $E(B-V)$ in the range 0.31-0.35 mag, and a distance modulus $(m-M)_0$ between 12.64 and 12.72 mag. The spectroscopic metallicity is [Fe/H]=+0.17 dex. We discuss the structural properties of the object and constrain possible hypotheses for its broadened upper main sequence by estimating the effect of differential reddening and its extended red clump.

Ba & Eu Abundances in M15 giant stars

To investigate the Ba and Eu abundances for a sample of 63 giant stars in the globular cluster M15. This is the largest sample of M15 giants stars for which Ba abundances have been determined and, due to the target selection of the original research programme, the Ba abundances are complete along the red giant branch. Stellar parameters were taken from the previous key study and a microturbulence-surface gravity relation was determined for precise measurement of the Ba line at 6496.898 Angstroms, which has a high sensitivity to microturbulence. Element abundances for Ba, La, Eu, Ca, Ni and Fe were calculated using spectrum synthesis and equivalent widths techniques. A bimodal distribution in Ba, Eu and La abundances was found within the sample. The low Ba,Eu,La mode had mean abundances of <[Ba/H]>=-2.41+/-0.16, <[Eu/H]>=-1.80+/-0.08 and <[La/H]>=-2.19+/-0.13 while the high Ba,Eu,La mode had mean abundances of <[Ba/H]>=-2.00+/-0.16, <[Eu/H]>=-1.65+/-0.13 and <[La/H]>=-1.95+/-0.11. Both modes are indicative of a pollution scenario dominated by the r-process, hence contributions from explosive nucleosynthesis of massive stars. There may be evidence of further enhancement by another heavy element process and of potential anticorrelations in Na-O for both modes indicating a complex formation and evolution history for M15.

Spectral matching for abundances and clustering analysis of stars on the giant branches of ω Centauri

We have determined stellar parameters and abundances for 221 giant branch stars in the globular cluster ω Centauri. A combination of photometry and lower-resolution spectroscopy was used to determine temperature, gravity, metallicity, [C/Fe], [N/Fe] and [Ba/Fe]. These abundances agree well with those found by previous researchers and expand the analysed sample of the cluster. k-means clustering analysis was used to group the stars into four homogeneous groups based upon these abundances. These stars show the expected anticorrelation in [C/Fe] to [N/Fe]. We investigated the distribution of CN-weak/strong stars on the colour-magnitude diagram. Asymptotic giant branch stars, which were selected from their position on the colour-magnitude diagram, were almost all CN-weak. This is in contrast to the red giant branch where a large minority were CN-strong. The results were also compared with cluster formation and evolution models. Overall, this study shows that statistically significant elemental and evolutionary conclusions can be obtained from lower resolution spectroscopy.

The AMBRE project: A new synthetic grid of high-resolution FGKM stellar spectra

Large grids of synthetic spectra covering a widespread range of stellar parameters are mandatory for different stellar and (extra-)Galactic physics applications. Such large grids can be used for the automatic parametrisation of stellar spectra such as that performed within the AMBRE project for which the main goal is the stellar atmospheric parameters determination for the few hundreds of thousands of archived spectra of four ESO spectrographs. To fulfil the needs of AMBRE and future similar projects, we have computed a grid of synthetic spectra over the whole optical domain for cool to very cool stars of any luminosity with metallicities varying from 10-5 to 10 times the solar metallicity, and considering large variations in the chemical content of the α-elements. New generation MARCS model atmospheres and the Turbospectrum code for radiative transfer have been used. We have also taken into account as complete as possible atomic and molecular linelists. A new grid of 16783 high resolution spectra over the wavelength range 3000 to 12000 Å has been computed with a spectral resolution always larger than 150000. Normalised and absolute flux versions are available over a wide range of stellar atmospheric parameters for stars of FGKM spectral types. The covered parameters are 2500K\leqTeff\leq8000K, -0.5\leqlog(g)\leq5.5dex, -5.0\leq[M/H]\leq+1.0 dex and five different values of the enrichment in α-elements have been considered (0.0, \pm0.2 dex and \pm0.4 dex around the standard values). This grid is made publicly available through the POLLUX database (about 50% of the spectra are already included in this database) and in FITS format upon request to the authors.

The AMBRE Project: Stellar parameterisation of the ESO:FEROS archived spectra

The AMBRE Project is a collaboration between the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) that has been established in order to carry out the determination of stellar atmospheric parameters for the archived spectra of four ESO spectrographs. The analysis of the FEROS archived spectra for their stellar parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravities, global metallicities, alpha element to iron ratios and radial velocities) has been completed in the first phase of the AMBRE Project. From the complete ESO:FEROS archive dataset that was received, a total of 21551 scientific spectra have been identified, covering the period 2005 to 2010. These spectra correspond to ~6285 stars. The determination of the stellar parameters was carried out using the stellar parameterisation algorithm, MATISSE (MATrix Inversion for Spectral SynthEsis), which has been developed at OCA to be used in the analysis of large scale spectroscopic studies in galactic archaeology. An analysis pipeline has been constructed that integrates spectral reduction and radial velocity correction procedures with MATISSE in order to automatically determine the stellar parameters of the FEROS spectra. Stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [M/H] and [alpha/Fe]) were determined for 6508 (30.2%) of the FEROS archived spectra (~3087 stars). Radial velocities were determined for 11963 (56%) of the archived spectra. 2370 (11%) spectra could not be analysed within the pipeline. 12673 spectra (58.8%) were analysed in the pipeline but their parameters were discarded based on quality criteria and error analysis determined within the automated process. The majority of these rejected spectra were found to have broad spectral features indicating that they may be hot and/or fast rotating stars, which are not considered within the adopted reference synthetic spectra grid of FGKM stars.

Medium-resolution s-process Element Survey of 47 Tuc giant stars

Medium-resolution (R~6,500) spectra of 97 giant stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc) have been used to derive the C and N abundance sensitive index, deltaC, and to infer abundances of several key elements, Fe, Na, Si, Ca, Zr and Ba for a sample of 13 of these stars with similar Teff and log g. These stars have stellar properties similar to the well-studied 47 Tuc giant star, Lee 2525, but with a range of CN excess (deltaC) values which are a measure of the CN abundance. The deltaC index is shown to be correlated with Na abundance for this sample, confirming previous studies. The Fe, Ca, Si and the light- and heavy-s process (slow neutron capture) elements, Zr and Ba respectively, have a narrow range of abundance values in these stars, indicative of a homogeneous abundance within this population of stars. The constancy of many element abundances (Fe, Si, Ca, Zr, Ba) and the deltaC and Na abundance correlation could imply that there has been a second era of star formation in this cluster that has revealed the products of CNO cycle burning via hot bottom burning (depletion of C, enhancement of N and the production of Na for high deltaC population). But there is no overall metallicity change across the range of deltaC values at a given position in the HR diagram that has been seen in some other globular clusters.

Differential chemical abundance analysis of a 47 Tuc AGB star with respect to Arcturus

This study resolves a discrepancy in the abundance of Zr in the 47 Tucanae asymptotic giant branch star Lee 2525. This star was observed using the echelle spectrograph on the 2.3 m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. The analysis was undertaken by calibrating Lee 2525 with respect to the standard giant star Arcturus. This work emphasises the importance of using a standard star with stellar parameters comparable to the star under analysis rather than a calibration with respect to the Sun (Koch & McWilliam 2008). Systematic errors in the analysis process are then minimised due to the similarity in atmospheric structure between the standard and programme stars. The abundances derived for Lee 2525 were found to be in general agreement with the Brown & Wallerstein (1992) values except for Zr. In this study Zr has a similar enhancement ([Zr/Fe] = +0.51 dex) to another light s-process element, Y ([Y/Fe] = +0.53 dex), which reflects current theory regarding the enrichment of s-process elements by nuclear processes within AGB stars (Busso et al. 2001). This is contrary to the results of Brown & Wallerstein (1992) where Zr was under-abundant ([Zr/Fe] = +0.51 dex) and Y was over-abundant ([Y/Fe] = +0.50 dex) with respect to Fe.

Inclination- and dust-corrected galaxy parameters: Bulge-to-disc ratios and size-luminosity relations

While galactic bulges may contain no significant dust of their own, the dust within galaxy discs can strongly attenuate the light from their embedded bulges. Furthermore, such dust inhibits the ability of observationally-determined inclination corrections to recover intrinsic (i.e. dust free) galaxy parameters. Using the sophisticated 3D radiative transfer model of Popescu et al. and Tuffs et al., together with Driver et al.'s recent determination of the average face-on opacity in nearby disc galaxies, we provide simple equations to correct (observed) disc central surface brightnesses and scalelengths for the effects of both inclination and dust in the B, V, I, J and K passband. We then collate and homogenise various literature data sets and determine the typical intrinsic scalelengths, central surface brightnesses and magnitudes of galaxy discs as a function of morphological type. All galaxies have been carefully modelled in their respective papers with a Sersic bulge plus an exponential disc. Using the bulge magnitude corrections from Driver et al., we additionally derive the average, dust-corrected, bulge-to-disc flux ratio as a function of galaxy type. With values typically less than 1/3, this places somewhat uncomfortable constraints on some current semi-analytic simulations. Typical bulge sizes, profile shapes, surface brightnesses and deprojected densities are provided. Finally, given the two-component nature of disc galaxies, we present luminosity-size and (surface brightness)-size diagrams for discs and bulges. We also show that the distribution of elliptical galaxies in the luminosity-size diagram is not linear but strongly curved.

s- and r-process element abundances in the CMD of 47 Tucanae using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on SALT

A recent study by Wylie et al 2006 has revealed that s-process element abundances are enhanced relative to iron in both red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars of 47 Tucanae. A more detailed investigation into s-process element abundances throughout the colour-magnitude diagram of 47 Tucanae is vital in order to determine whether the observed enhancements are intrinsic to the cluster. This paper explores this possibility through observational and theoretical means. The visibility of s- and r-process element lines in synthetic spectra of giant and dwarf stars throughout the colour magnitude diagram of 47 Tucanae has been explored. It was determined that a resolving power of 10 000 was sufficient to observe s-process element abundance variations in globular cluster giant branch stars. These synthetic results were compared with the spectra of eleven 47 Tucanae giant branch stars observed during the performance verification of the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. Three s-process elements, Zr, Ba, Nd, and one r-process element, Eu, were investigated. No abundance variations were found such that [X/Fe] = 0.0 +/- 0.5 dex. It was concluded that this resolving power, R ~ 5000, was not sufficient to obtain exact abundances but upper limits on the s-process element abundances could be determined.
