Precursor superconducting effects in the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ superconductor: the confrontation between superconducting fluctuations and percolative effects revisited

The confrontation between the superconducting fluctuations and percolation effects as the origin of the in-plane paraconductivity in cuprate superconductors was earlier addressed at a quantitative level in the case of the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) compound. Using in-plane resistivity data from a high-quality YBCO thin film, we will extend these analyses to high reduced temperatures, in the case of the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the conventional superconducting fluctuations, by considering the total energy cutoff. These data will also be analysed in terms of the mean field-approach of the effective-medium theory, to probe if emergent percolative effects may account for the resistivity rounding above $T_c$. Our analyses confirm earlier conclusions: the measured paraconductivity cannot be explained in terms of emergent percolation processes, but it may be accounted for in terms of the GGL approach. These results also call into question alternative scenarios, including a recent proposal derived from emergent percolative effects.

Multiband effects on the upper critical field angular dependence of 122-family iron pnictide superconductors

Detailed measurements of the in-plane resistivity were performed in a high-quality Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x=0.065$) single crystal, in magnetic fields up to 9 T and with different orientations $θ$ relative to the crystal $c$ axis. A significant $ρ(T)_{H,θ}$ rounding is observed just above the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ due to Cooper pairs created by superconducting fluctuations. These data are analyzed in terms of a generalization of the Aslamazov-Larkin approach, that extends its applicability to high reduced-temperatures and magnetic fields. This method allows us to carry out a criterion-independent determination of the angular dependence of the upper critical field, $H_{c2}(θ)$. In spite of the relatively small anisotropy of this compound, it is found that $H_{c2}(θ)$ presents a significant deviation from the single-band 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (3D-aGL) approach, particularly for large $θ$ (typically above $\sim60^o$). These results are interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of these materials, in contrast with other proposals for similar $H_{c2}(θ)$ anomalies. Our results are also consistent with an effective anisotropy factor almost temperature independent near $T_c$, a result that differs from the ones obtained by using a single-band model.

The paraconductivity of granular Al-films at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields

The electrical conductivity induced near the superconducting transition by thermal fluctuations was measured in different granular aluminum films. The seemingly anomalous behavior at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields is explained by taking into account a total-energy cutoff in the superconducting fluctuation spectrum in both the direct (Aslamazov-Larkin) and the indirect (anomalous Maki-Thompson) contributions to the fluctuation effects. The analysis allowed a reliable determination of the coherence length amplitudes, which resulted to be much larger (20-48 nm) than the grains size (5-10 nm). This suggests that the grains are strongly Josephson-coupled, while the Tc value is still as high as twice the bulk value. These results could contribute to identify the mechanisms enhancing Tc in these materials.

The conductivity and the magnetization around Tc in optimally-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ revisited: quantitative analysis in terms of fluctuating superconducting pairs

We first present detailed measurements of the rounding behavior around the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, of the in-plane electrical conductivity, magnetoconductivity and magnetization, including the low and moderate magnetic field regimes, in a high-quality single crystal and a thin film of the prototypical optimally-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (OPT Y-123), in which the inhomogeneity effects are minimized. Then, it is presented a comparison of these experimental data with the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach that takes into account the unavoidable contribution of the fluctuating pairs, the only theoretical scenario allowing at present to analyze these roundings at the quantitative level. These analyses demonstrate that the measured rounding effects around $T_c$ may be explained quantitative and consistently in terms of the GL scenario, even up to the rounding onset temperatures if the quantum localization, associated with the shrinkage of the superconducting wavefunction, is taken into account. The implications of our results on the pseudogap physics of optimally-doped cuprates are also discussed.

Quasi-2D behavior of 112-type iron-based superconductors

Fluctuation magnetoconductivity and magnetization above the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) are measured on the recently discovered 112 family of iron-based superconductors (IBS), Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$As$_2$, which presents an extra As-As chain spacer-layer. The analysis in terms of a generalization of the Lawrence-Doniach (LD) approach to finite applied magnetic fields indicates that these compounds are among the most anisotropic IBS ($γ$ up to ~30), and provides a compelling evidence of a quasi-two-dimensional behavior for doping levels near the optimal one.

Magnetic field dependence of the precursor diamagnetism in La superconductors with magnetic Pr impurities

The interplay between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities in conventional BCS low-Tc superconductors has been studied through measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the fluctuation diamagnetism (FD) above Tc in lanthanum with praseodymium impurities. These measurements provide a crucial confirmation of our previous observation [Europhys. Lett. 73, 587 (2006)] that in the dilute impurity regime the FD increases almost linearly with the concentration of magnetic impurities. This striking effect is attributed to a variation due to the presence of the fluctuating Cooper pairs of the coupling between magnetic impurities. To describe these results at a phenomenological level, we propose a Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau model for the FD which includes an indirect contribution proportional to both the impurities concentration and the Cooper pairs density. Our approach is able to explain simultaneously the FD increase due to magnetic impurities and its decrease with the application of large magnetic fields.

Measurements of the superconducting fluctuations in optimally-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ under high magnetic fields: Probing the 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau approach

The superconducting fluctuations well inside the normal state of Fe-based superconductors were experimentally studied through the in-plane paraconductivity in several high-quality optimally-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ crystals. These measurements were performed in magnetic fields with amplitudes up to 14 T, and different orientations relative to the crystals c axis (0, 53 and 90 degrees). The results allowed a stringent check of the applicability of a recently proposed Ginzburg-Landau approach for the fluctuation electrical conductivity of 3D anisotropic materials in presence of finite applied magnetic fields.

Three-dimensional anisotropic fluctuation diamagnetism around the superconducting transition of Ba(1-x)KxFe2As2 single crystals in the finite-field (or Prange) regime

The magnetization around the superconducting transition was recently measured in a high-quality Ba(1-x)KxFe2As2 single crystal with magnetic fields applied along and transverse to the crystal Fe-layers [J. Mosqueira et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 094519 (2011)]. Here we extend this study to the finite field (or Prange) regime, in which the magnetic susceptibility is expected to be strongly dependent on the applied magnetic field. These measurements are analyzed in the framework of the three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg Landau (3D-aGL) approach generalized to the short wavelength regime through the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum. The results further confirm the adequacy of GL approaches to describe the fluctuation effects close to the superconducting transition of these materials.

Measurements of the fluctuation-induced in-plane magnetoconductivity at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields in the iron arsenide BaFe(2-x)NixAs2

The superconducting fluctuations well inside the normal state of Fe-based superconductors were studied through measurements of the in-plane paraconductivity and magnetoconductivity in high quality BaFe(2-x)NixAs2 crystals with doping levels from the optimal (x=0.10) up to the highly overdoped (x=0.20). These measurements, performed in magnetic fields up to 9 T perpendicular to the ab (Fe) layers, allowed a reliable check of the applicability to iron-based superconductors of Ginzburg-Landau approaches for 3D anisotropic compounds, even at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results also allowed us to gain valuable insights into the dependence on the doping level of some central superconducting parameters (coherence lengths and anisotropy factor).

Precursor superconducting diamagnetism in YBa2Cu3O7-d with in-plane or intercalated magnetic impurities

The magnetization around the superconducting transition was measured in YBa2Cu3O7-d with magnetic impurities in the CuO2 layers (Cu substituted by Zn or Ni) or between them (Y substituted by Gd or Pr). While some of these impurities have an important effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the precursor diamagnetism observed above Tc is not appreciably affected. This result contrasts with recent observations in a conventional BCS superconductor (La), in which the precursor diamagnetism was found to increase several orders of magnitude with the addition of a small amount (a few atomic percent) of Gd or Pr magnetic impurities.

In-plane and transverse superconducting fluctuation diamagnetism in the presence of charge-density waves in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals

The fluctuation-diamagnetism (FD) above the superconducting transition was measured in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals. The moderate uniaxial anisotropy of this compound, and some experimental improvements, allowed to measure the superconducting fluctuation effects in the two main crystallographic directions. These results reveal that the nonlocal electrodynamic effects on the FD are highly anisotropic, and they also discard a possible contribution to the FD coming from the charge-density waves (CDW) appearing below $Tcdw > Tc in 2H-NbSe2, in agreement with a phenomenological estimate.

Electric and magnetic characterization of NbSe2 single crystals: anisotropic superconducting fluctuations above Tc

Electric and magnetic characterization of NbSe2 single crystals is first presented in detail. Then, some preliminary measurements of the fluctuation-diamagnetism (FD) above the transition temperature Tc are presented. The moderate uniaxial anisotropy of this compound allowed us to observe the fluctuation effects for magnetic fields H applied in the two main crystallographic orientations. The superconducting parameters resulting from the characterization suggest that it is possible to do a reliable analysis of the FD in terms of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory.

On the interplay between Tc-inhomogeneities at long length scales and thermal fluctuations around the average superconducting transition in cuprates

We review some aspects of the interplay between inhomogeneities at long length scales and the intrinsic fluctuations of Cooper pairs above Tc in HTSC. These inhomogeneities do not directly affect the thermal fluctuations, but they may affect the measured behaviour of any observable around Tc. The emphasis is centered on the role played by the presence of Tc-inhomogeneities on the in-plane transport properties. For completeness, we will also summarize some results on this interplay when various types of inhomogeneities (i.e., structural and stoichiometric, uniformly and non-uniformly distributed) are simultaneously present.
