AGN in Gaia Alerts: from flares to Changing Look Quasars

The Gaia Alerts system is providing alerts on a variety of objects displaying a significant photometric change detected by the Gaia satellite from one passage to the next one over the same region of the sky. Among the over 22000 alerts published until the end of 2022, around 13 percent concern AGN or quasar candidates. We have embarked on a spectroscopic ground-based follow-up of some of those (including some selected by a different method specifically in galactic nuclei), to establish their true nature, and reveal the various phenomena leading to a change in magnitude of those AGN. The present paper deals with radio-quiet objects, while the radio-loud ones will be described in a companion paper. We confirm, on one hand, the AGN/quasar nature of 64 new candidates alerted by Gaia, and, on the other hand, obtained second-epoch spectra of over 200 known AGN also alerted for large photometric variations. The observed phenomena show a large variety: from Flares to Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) and a large number of Changing Look Quasars (CLQs, 56 secure ones, plus 23 probable ones), not forgetting some rarer events like SNe, microlensing events or Extreme Coronal Line Emitters. This sample shows that variability is an excellent tool to detect new quasars, especially radio-quiet ones that otherwise would be undetected, and that a significant fraction of variable AGN/quasars, around 10 percent, presents the CLQ phenomenon. Some of the new CLQs are followed-up to monitor further changes and measure time scales.

Turing patterns on polymerized membranes: a coarse-grained lattice modelling with internal degree of freedom for polymer direction

We numerically study Turing patterns (TPs) on two-dimensional surfaces with a square boundary in ${\bf R}^3$ using a surface model for polymerized membranes. The variables used to describe the membranes correspond to two distinct degrees of freedom: an internal degree of freedom for the polymer directions in addition to the positional degree of freedom. This generalised surface model enables us to identify a non-trivial interference between the TP system and the membranes. To this end, we employ a hybrid numerical technique, utilising Monte Carlo updates for membrane configurations and discrete time iterations for the FitzHugh-Nagumo type Turing equation. The simulation results clearly show that anisotropies in the mechanical deformation properties, particularly the easy axes associated with the stretching and bending of the membranes, determine the direction of the TPs to be perpendicular or parallel to the easy axes. Additionally, by calculating the dependence of the maximum entropy on the internal degree of freedom, we can obtain information on the relaxation with respect to the polymer structure. This crucial information serves to remind us that non-equilibrium configurations can be captured within the canonical Monte Carlo simulations.

Multi-purpose InSTRument for Astronomy at Low-resolution: MISTRAL@OHP

MISTRAL is the new Faint Object Spectroscopic Camera mounted at the folded Cassegrain focus of the 1.93m telescope of Haute-Provence Observatory. We describe the design and components of the instrument and give some details about its operation. We emphasise in particular the various observing modes and the performances of the detector. A short description is also given about the working environment. Various types of objects, including stars, nebulae, comets, novae, galaxies have been observed during various test phases to evaluate the performances of the instrument. The instrument covers the range of 4000 to 8000A with the blue setting, or from 6000 to 10000A with the red setting, at an average spectral resolution of 700. Its peak efficiency is about 22% at 6000A. In spectroscopy, a limiting magnitude of 19.5 can be achieved for a point source in one hour with a signal to noise of 3 in the continuum (and better if emission lines are present). In imaging mode, limiting magnitudes of 20-21 can be obtained in 10-20mn (with average seing conditions of 2.5 arcsec at OHP). The instrument is very users-friendly and can be put into operations in less than 15mn (rapid change-over from the other instrument in use) if required by the science (like for Gamma-Rays Bursts). Some first scientific results are described for various types of objects, and in particular for the follow-up of GRBs. While some further improvements are still under way, in particular to ease the switch from blue to red setting and add more grisms or filters, MISTRAL is ready for the follow-up of transients and other variable objects, in the soon-to-come era of e.g. the SVOM satellite and of the Rubin telescope.

On existence of some special pair of primitive elements over finite fields

In this paper we generalize the results of Sharma, Awasthi and Gupta (see \cite{SAG}). We work over a field of any characteristic with $q = p^k$ elements and we give a sufficient condition for the existence of a primitive element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{p^k}$ such that $f(α)$ is also primitive in $\mathbb{F}_{p^k}$, where $f(x) \in \mathbb{F}_{p^k}(x)$ is a quotient of polynomials with some restrictions. We explicitly determine the values of $k$ for which such a pair exists for $p=2,3,5$ and $7$.

Effect of oxygen incorporation on normal and superconducting properties of MgB2 films

Oxygen was systematically incorporated in MBE grown MgB2 films using in-situ post-growth anneals in an oxygen environment. Connectivity analysis in combination with measurements of the critical temperature and resistivity indicate that oxygen is distributed both within and between the grains. High values of critical current densities in field (~4x10^5 A/cm^2 at 8 T and 4.2 K), extrabolated critical fields (>45 T) and slopes of critical field versus temperature (1.4 T/K) are observed. Our results suggest that low growth temperatures (300oC) and oxygen doping (>0.65%) can produce MgB2 with high Jc values in field and Hc2 for high-field magnet applications.

Brane Lorentz Symmetry from Lorentz Breaking in the Bulk

We propose the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of a bulk vector field as a way to generate the selection of bulk dimensions invisible to the standard model confined to the brane. By assigning a non-vanishing vacuum value to the vector field, a direction is singled out in the bulk vacuum, thus breaking the bulk Lorentz symmetry. We present the condition for induced Lorentz symmetry on the brane, as phenomenologically required.

Near orders and codes

Hoholdt, van Lint and Pellikaan used order functions to construct codes by means of Linear Algebra and Semigroup Theory only. However, Geometric Goppa codes that can be represented by this method are mainly those based on just one point. In this paper we introduce the concept of near order function with the aim of generalize this approach in such a way that a of wider family of Geometric Goppa codes can be studied on a more elementary setting.
