Characterisation of the magnetic fields of the Herbig Be stars HD 200775 and V380 0ri

The origin of the magnetic fields of the chemically peculiar main sequence Ap/Bp stars is still matter of intense debate. The recent discoveries of magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars using high resolution data obtained with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT provide a strong argument in favour of the fossil field hypothesis. Using a simple oblique rotator model of a centered dipole, we fit the Stokes V LSD profiles of two of these magnetic HAeBe stars, HD 200775 and V380 Ori, as well as their variations on timescales from days to months. We find that in both cases the dipole hypothesis is acceptable and we determine the rotation period, the angle between rotation and magnetic axes and the intensity of the magnetic field at pole.

Calibration of the pre-main sequence RS Cha binary system

Context: The calibration of binary systems with accurately known masses and/or radii provides powerful tools to test stellar structure and evolution theory and to determine the age and helium content of stars. We study the eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary system RS Cha, for which we have accurate observations of the parameters of both stars (masses, radii, luminosities, effective temperatures and metallicity). Aims: We have calculated several sets of stellar models for the components of the RS Cha system, with the aim of reproducing simultaneously the available observational constraints and to estimate the age and initial helium abundance of the system. Methods: Using the CESAM stellar evolution code, we model both components starting from the initial mass and metallicity and adjusting the input parameters and physics in order to satisfy the observational constraints. Results: We find that the observations cannot be reproduced if we assume that the abundance ratios are solar but they are satisfied if carbon and nitrogen are depleted in the RS Cha system with respect to the Sun. This is in accordance with the abundances observed in other young stars. The RS Cha system is in an evolutionary stage at the end of the PMS phase where models are not strongly sensitive to various physical uncertainties. However we show that the oscillations of these two stars, which have been detected, would be able to discriminate between different options in the physical description of this evolutionary phase.

The magnetic field of the planet-hosting star $τ$ Bootis

We have obtained high resolution spectropolarimetric data for the planet-hosting star $τ$ Bootis, using the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT. A weak but clear Stokes $V$ signature is detected on three of the four nights of June 2006 during which we have recorded data. This polarimetric signature indicates with no ambiguity the presence of a magnetic field at the star's surface, with intensity of just a few Gauss. The analysis of the photospheric lines of $τ$ Boo at ultra-high signal-to-noise reveals the presence of an 18% relative differential rotation. Tentative Zeeman-Doppler imaging, using our spectropolarimetric observations covering only a fraction of the star's rotational phase, indicates a magnetic field with a dominant potential field component. The data are best fitted when a 3.1d period of modulation and an intermediate inclination are assumed. Considering the level of differential rotation of $τ$ Boo, this implies a rotation period of 3.0d at the equator and of 3.7d at the pole, and a topology of the magnetic field where its main non-axisymmetric part is located at low latitudes. The planet is probably synchronised with the star's rotation at intermediate latitudes, while the non-axisymmetric part of the magnetic field seems located at lower latitudes. Our limited data do not provide sufficient constraints on the magnetic field to study a possible interaction of the planet with the star's magnetosphere. Investigating this issue will require data with much better phase coverage. Similar studies should also be performed for other stars hosting close-in giant planets.

The magnetic field of the pre-main sequence Herbig Ae star HD 190073

The general context of this paper is the study of magnetic fields in the pre-main sequence intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Magnetic fields are likely to play an important role in pre-main sequence evolution at these masses, in particular in controlling the gains and losses of stellar angular momentum. The particular aim of this paper is to announce the detection of a structured magnetic field in the Herbig Ae star HD 190073, and to discuss various scenarii for the geometry of the star, its environment and its magnetic field. We have used the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT in 2005 and 2006 to obtain high-resolution and signal-to-noise circular polarization spectra which demonstrate unambiguously the presence of a magnetic field in the photosphere of this star. Nine circular polarization spectra were obtained, each one showing a clear Zeeman signature. This signature is suggestive of a magnetic field structured on large scales. The signature, which corresponds to a longitudinal magnetic field of 74+- 10 G, does not vary detectably on a one-year timeframe, indicating either an azimuthally symmetric field, a zero inclination angle between the rotation axis and the line of sight, or a very long rotation period. The optical spectrum of HD 190073 exhibits a large number of emission lines. We discuss the formation of these emission lines in the framework of a model involving a turbulent heated region at the base of the stellar wind, possibly powered by magnetic accretion. This magnetic detection brings an important element for our understanding of stellar magnetism at intermediate masses.

Investigation of the magnetic field characteristics of Herbig Ae/Be stars: Discovery of the pre-main sequence progenitors of the magnetic Ap/Bp stars

We are investigating the magnetic characteristics of pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars, with the aim of (1) understanding the origin and evolution of magnetism in intermediate-mass stars, and (2) exploring the influence of magnetic fields on accretion, rotation and mass-loss at the early stages of evolution of A, B and O stars. We have begun by conducting 2 large surveys of Herbig Ae/Be stars, searching for direct evidence of photospheric magnetic fields via the longitudinal Zeeman effect. From observations obtained using FORS1 at the ESO-VLT and ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we report the confirmed detection of magnetic fields in 4 pre-main sequence A- and B-type stars, and the apparent (but as yet unconfirmed) detection of fields in 2 other such stars. We do not confirm the detection of magnetic fields in several stars reported by other authors to be magnetic: HD 139614, HD 144432 or HD 31649. One of the most evolved stars in the detected sample, HD 72106A, shows clear evidence of strong photospheric chemical peculiarity, whereas many of the other (less evolved) stars do not. The magnetic fields that we detect appear to have surface intensities of order 1 kG, seem to be structured on global scales, and appear in about 10% of the stars studied. Based on these properties, these magnetic stars appear to be pre-main sequence progenitors of the magnetic Ap/Bp stars.

Discovery of the pre-main sequence progenitors of the magnetic Ap/Bp stars?

We report the discovery, using FORS1 at the ESO-VLT and ESPaDOnS at the CFHT, of magnetic fields in the young A-type stars HD 101412, V380 Ori and HD 72106A. Two of these stars (HD 101412 and V380 Ori) are pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars, while one (HD 72106A) is physically associated with a HAeBe star. Remarkably, evidence of surface abundance spots is detected in the spectra of HD 72106A. The magnetic fields of these objects display intensities of order 1 kG at the photospheric level, are ordered on global scales, and appear in approximately 10% of the stars studied. Based on these properties, the detected stars may well represent pre-main sequence progenitors of the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. The low masses inferred for these objects (2.6, 2.8 and 2.4 solar masses) represent additional contradictions to the hypothesis of Hubrig et al. (2000), who claim that magnetic fields appear in intermediate-mass stars only after 30% of their main sequence evolution is complete. Finally, we fail to confirm claims by Hubrig et al. (2004) of magnetic fields in the Herbig Ae star HD 139614.

Preparing the COROT space mission: new variable stars in the galactic Anticenter direction

The activities related to the preparation of the asteroseismic, photometric space mission COROT are described. Photoelectric observations, wide--field CCD photometry, uvbyB calibrations and further time--series have been obtained at different observatories and telescopes. They have been planned to complete the COROT programme in the direction of the galactic Anticenter. In addition to suitable asteroseismic targets covering the different evolutionary stages between ZAMS and TAMS, we discovered several other variable stars, both pulsating and geometrical. We compared results on the incidence of variability in the galactic Center and Anticenter directions. Physical parameters have been obtained and evolutionary tracks fitting them have been calculated. The peculiarities of some individual stars alre pointed out. Paper based on observations collected at the San Pedro Martir, Sierra Nevada, Teide, La Silla, Haute-Provence and Roque de Los Muchachos (Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and Mercator telescopes) observatories.

GAUDI: a preparatory archive for the COROT mission

The GAUDI database (Ground-based Asteroseismology Uniform Database Interface, http://sdc.laeff.esa.es/gaudi/) is a preparatory archive for the COROT (COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits, http://www.astrsp-mrs.fr/projets/corot/) mission developed at LAEFF (Laboratory for Space Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics, http://www.laeff.esa.es). Its intention is to make the ground-based observations obtained in the preparation of the asteroseismology programme available in a simple and efficient way. It contains spectroscopic and photometric data together with inferred physical parameters for more than 1500 objects gathered since January 1998 in 6 years of observational campaigns. In this paper, the main functionalities and characteristics of the system are described. The observations have been collected at ESO-La Silla, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, South African Astronomical Observatory, Tautenberg Observatory and Sierra Nevada Observatory.

Abundance analysis of targets for the COROT / MONS asteroseismology missions II. Abundance analysis of the COROT main targets

One of the goals of the ground-based support program for the COROT and Roemer satellite missions is to characterize suitable target stars for the part of the missions dedicated to asteroseismology. We present the detailed abundance analysis of nine of the potential COROT main targets using the semi-automatic software VWA. For two additional COROT targets we could not perform the analysis due to the high rotational velocity of these stars. For five stars with low rotational velocity we have also performed abundance analysis by a classical equivalent width method in order to test the reliability of the VWA software. The agreement between the different methods is good. We find that it is necessary to measure abundances extracted from each line relative to the abundances found from a spectrum of the Sun in order to remove systematic errors. We have constrained the global atmospheric parameters Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] to within 70-100 K, 0.1-0.2 dex, and 0.1 dex for five stars which are slow rotators (v sin i < 15 km/s). For most of the stars stars we find good agreement with the parameters found from line depth ratios, H-alpha lines, Strömgren indices, previous spectroscopic studies, and also log g determined from the HIPPARCOS parallaxes. For the fast rotators v sin i > 60 km/s it is not possible to constrain the atmospheric parameters.

The pre-main sequence star HD 34282: A very short period delta Scuti-type pulsator

HD 34282 has been found to pulsate during a systematic search for short-term photometric variability in Herbig Ae/Be stars with the goal of determining the position and size of the pre-main sequence instability strip. Simultaneous Stromgren photometry is used in the frequency analysis, yielding two frequencies with values of nu1=79.5 and nu2=71.3 c/d. The light curve with the largest amplitude is that of the u band. This behaviour, which is not common for delta Scuti stars, is explained as pulsation in a high radial order in stars near the blue edge of the instability strip. The main period, with a value of 18.12 min, represents the shortest period observed so far for a delta Scuti-type pulsator. A seismic modelling, including instability predictions and rotation effects, has been attempted. It is found that both main sequence and pre-main sequence models predict modes in the range of 56 to 82 c/d (between 648 and 949 microHz), corresponding to oscillations of radial order n from 6 to 8. The highest of the observed frequencies only becomes unstable for models of low metallicity, in agreement with results from spectroscopic measurements.

Multi-Site observations of SU Aurigae

We present results from the 1996 MUSICOS (MUlti-SIte COntinuous Spectroscopy) campaign on the T Tauri star SU Aurigae. We find a 2.7-d periodicity in the He I (587.6 nm) line and somewhat longer, less well-pronounced periodicities in the Balmer lines and in Na D. Our observations support the suggestion that the wind and infall signatures are out of phase on SU Aur. We present Doppler images of SU Aur that have been obtained from least-squares deconvolved profiles. Images taken about one rotation apart show only limited overlap, in particular at low latitudes. This is in part due to limitations in signal-to-noise, and in part due to line profile deformations that arise from short-lived and/or non-surface features. The agreement at high latitudes is better and suggests that at least some longer-lived features are present. The analysis of Stokes V profiles yields a marginal magnetic field detection during one of the phases.

Preparing the COROT space mission: incidence and characterisation of pulsation in the Lower Instability Strip

By pursuing the goal to find new variables in the COROT field-of-view we characterised a sample of stars located in the lower part of the instability strip. Our sample is composed of stars belonging to the disk population in the solar neighbourhood. We found that 23% of the stars display multiperiodic light variability up to few mmag of amplitude. uvbyBeta photometry fixed most of the variables in the middle of the instability strip and high-resolution spectroscopy established that they have vsin i>100 km/s. The comparison with delta Sct stars in the whole Galaxy shows slightly different features, i.e., most delta Sct stars have a 0.05-mag redder (b-y)_0 index and lower vsin i values. Additional investigation in the open cluster NGC 6633 confirms the same incidence of variability, i.e., around 20%. The wide variety of pulsational behaviours of delta Sct stars (including unusual objects such as a variable beyond the blue edge or a rapidly rotating high-amplitude pulsator) makes them very powerful asteroseismic tools to be used by COROT. Being quite common among bright stars, delta Sct stars are suitable targets for optical observations from space.

Abundance analysis of targets for the COROT / MONS asteroseimology missions I. Semi-automatic abundance analysis of the gamma Dor star HD 49434

One of the goals of the ground-based support program for the COROT and MONS/Roemer satellite missions is to select and characterise suitable target stars for the part of the missions dedicated to asteroseismology. While the global atmospheric parameters may be determined with good accuracy from the Stromgren indices, careful abundance analysis must be made for the proposed main targets. This is a time consuming process considering the long list of primary and secondary targets. We have therefore developed new software called VWA for this task. The VWA automatically selects the least blended lines from the atomic line database VALD, and consequently adjusts the abundance in order to find the best match between the calculated and observed spectra. The variability of HD 49434 was discovered as part of COROT ground-based support observations. Here we present a detailed abundance analysis of HD 49434 using VWA. For most elements we find abundances somewhat below the Solar values, in particular we find [Fe/H] = -0.13(14). We also present the results from the study of the variability that is seen in spectroscopic and photometric time series observations. From the characteristics of the variation seen in photometry and in the line profiles we propose that HD 49434 is a variable star of the gamma Doradus type.

Mass-loss induced instabilities in fast rotating stars

To explain the origin of Herbig Ae/Be stars activity, it has been recently proposed that strong mass-losses trigger rotational instabilities in the envelope of fast rotating stars. The kinetic energy transferred to turbulent motions would then be the energy source of the active phenomena observed in the outer atmosphere of Herbig Ae/Be stars (Vigneron et al. 1990; Lignieres et al. 1996). In this paper, we present a one-dimensional model of angular momentum transport which allows to estimate the degree of differential rotation induced by mass-loss. Gradients of angular velocity are very close to - 2 Ω/ R (Ωbeing the surface rotation rate and R the stellar radius). For strong mass-loss, this process occurs in a short time scale as compared to other processes of angular momentum transport. Application of existing stability criteria indicates that rotational instabilities should develop for fast rotating star. Thus, in fast rotating stars with strong winds, shear instabilities are expected to develop and to generate subphotospheric turbulent motions. Albeit very simple, this model gives strong support to the assumption made by Vigneron et al. 1990 and Lignieres et al. 1996.

Line profile variations in $γ$ Doradus

We present data from high-dispersion echelle spectra and simultaneous $uvby$ photometry for $γ$~Doradus. These data were obtained from several sites during 1994 November as part of the MUSICOS-94 campaign. The star has two closely-spaced periods of about 0.75 d and is the brightest member of a new class of variable early F-type stars. A previously suspected third period, very close to the other two, is confirmed. Previous observations indicated that sudden changes could be expected in the spectrum, but none were found during the campaign. The radial velocities rule out the possibility of a close companion. The phasing between the radial velocity and light curve of the strongest periodic component rules out the starspot model. The only viable mechanism for understanding the variability is nonradial pulsation. We used the method of moments to identify the modes of pulsation of the three periodic components. These appear to be sectorial retrograde modes with spherical harmonic degrees, ($\ell, m$), as follows: $f_1$ = (3,3), $f_2$ = (1,1) and $f_4$ = (1,1). The angle of inclination of the star is found to be $i \approx 70^\circ$.
