Cosmic evolution of molecular gas mass density from an empirical relation between $\rm L_{1.4GHz}$ and $\rm L^{\prime}_{CO}$

Historically, GHz radio emission has been used extensively to characterize the star-formation activity in galaxies. In this work, we look for empirical relations amongst the radio luminosity, the infrared luminosity, and the CO-based molecular gas mass. We assemble a sample of 278 nearby galaxies with measurements of radio continuum and total infrared emission, and the $^{12}$CO (J = 1-0) emission line. We find a correlation between the radio continuum and the CO emission line (with a scatter of 0.36 dex), in a large sample of different kind of galaxies. Making use of this correlation, we explore the evolution of the molecular gas mass function and the cosmological molecular gas mass density in six redshift bins up to $z = 1.5$. These results agree with previous semi-analytic predictions and direct measurements: the cosmic molecular gas density increases up to $z=1.5$. In addition, we find a single plane across five orders of magnitude for the explored luminosities, with a scatter of 0.27 dex. These correlations are sufficiently robust to be used for samples where no CO measurements exist.

VALES V: A kinematic analysis of the molecular gas content in $H$-ATLAS galaxies at $z\sim0.03-0.35$ using ALMA

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) resolved observations of molecular gas in galaxies up to $z=0.35$ to characterise the role of global galactic dynamics on the global interstellar medium (ISM) properties. These observations consist of a sub-sample of 39 galaxies taken from the Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). From the CO($J=1-0)$ emission line, we quantify the kinematic parameters by modelling the velocity fields. We find that the IR luminosity increases with the rotational to dispersion velocity ratio ($V_{\rm rot}/σ_v$, corrected for inclination). We find a dependence between $V_{\rm rot}/σ_v$ and the [CII]/IR ratio, suggesting that the so-called `[CII] deficit' is related to the dynamical state of the galaxies. We find that global pressure support is needed to reconcile the dynamical mass estimates with the stellar masses in our systems with low $V_{\rm rot}/σ_v$ values. The star formation rate (SFR) is weakly correlated with the molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm H_2}$) in our sample, suggesting that the release of gravitational energy from cold gas may not be the main energy source of the turbulent motions seen in the VALES galaxies. By defining a proxy of the `star formation efficiency' parameter as the SFR divided by the CO luminosity (SFE$'\equiv$ SFR/L$'_{\rm CO}$), we find a constant SFE$'$ per crossing time ($t_{\rm cross}$). We suggest that $t_{\rm cross}$ may be the controlling timescale in which the star formation occurs in dusty $z\sim0.03-0.35$ galaxies.

Dissociation energy of the hydrogen molecule at 10$^{-9}$ accuracy

The ionization energy of ortho-H$_2$ has been determined to be $E^\mathrm{o}_\mathrm{I}(\mathrm{H}_2)/(hc)=124\,357.238\,062(25)$ cm$^{-1}$ from measurements of the GK(1,1)--X(0,1) interval by Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy using a narrow band 179-nm laser source and the ionization energy of the GK(1,1) state by continuous-wave near-infrared laser spectroscopy. $E^\mathrm{o}_\mathrm{I}$(H$_2$) was used to derive the dissociation energy of H$_2$, $D^{N=1}_{0}$(H$_2$), at $35\,999.582\,894(25)$ cm$^{-1}$ with a precision that is more than one order of magnitude better than all previous results. The new result challenges calculations of this quantity and represents a benchmark value for future relativistic and QED calculations of molecular energies.

VALES: IV. Exploring the transition of star formation efficiencies between normal and starburst galaxies using APEX/SEPIA Band-5 and ALMA at low redshift

In this work we present new APEX/SEPIA Band-5 observations targeting the CO ($J=2\text{-}1$) emission line of 24 Herschel-detected galaxies at $z=0.1-0.2$. Combining this sample {with} our recent new Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES), we investigate the star formation efficiencies (SFEs = SFR/$M_{\rm H_{2}}$) of galaxies at low redshift. We find the SFE of our sample bridges the gap between normal star-forming galaxies and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are thought to be triggered by different star formation modes. Considering the $\rm SFE'$ as the SFR and the $L'_{\rm CO}$ ratio, our data show a continuous and smooth increment as a function of infrared luminosity (or star formation rate) with a scatter about 0.5 dex, instead of a steep jump with a bimodal behaviour. This result is due to the use of a sample with a much larger range of sSFR/sSFR$_{\rm ms}$ using LIRGs, with luminosities covering the range between normal and ULIRGs. We conclude that the main parameters controlling the scatter of the SFE in star-forming galaxies are the systematic uncertainty of the $α_{\rm CO}$ conversion factor, the gas fraction and physical size.

Spin wave amplification using the spin Hall effect in permalloy/platinum bilayers

We investigate the effect of an electrical current on the attenuation length of a 900 nm wavelength spin-wave in a permalloy/Pt bilayer using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy. The modification of the spin-wave relaxation rate is linear in current density, reaching up to 14% for a current density of 2.3$\times10^{11} $A/m$^2$ in Pt. This change is attributed to the spin transfer torque induced by the spin Hall effect and corresponds to an effective spin Hall angle of 0.13, which is among the highest values reported so far. The spin Hall effect thus appears as an efficient way of amplifying/attenuating propagating spin waves.

Quantum Decoherence of Charge Qubit coupled to Nonlinear Nanomechanical Resonator

When the nonlinearity of nanomechanical resonator is not negligible, the quantum decoherence of charge qubit is studied analytically. Using nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model, one explores the possibility of being quantum data bus for nonlinear nanomechanical resonator, the nonlinearity destroys the dynamical quantum information-storage and maintains the revival of quantum coherence of charge qubit. With the calculation of decoherence factor, we demonstrate the influence of the nonlinearity of nanomechanical resonator on engineered decoherence of charge qubit.

Mu2e Conceptual Design Report

Mu2e at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the conceptual design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-1 approval, which was granted July 11, 2012.

Clumpy accretion onto black holes. I. Clumpy-ADAF structure and radiation

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of clumps embedded in and confined by the advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF), in which collisions among the clumps are neglected. We start from the collisionless Boltzmann equation and assume that interaction between the clumps and the ADAF is responsible for transporting angular momentum of clumps outward. The inner edge of the clumpy-ADAF is set to be the tidal radius of the clumps. We consider strong and weak coupling cases, in which the averaged properties of clumps follow the ADAF dynamics and mainly determined by the black hole potential, respectively. We get the analytical solution of the dynamics of clumps for the two cases. The velocity dispersion of clumps is one magnitude higher than the ADAF for the strong coupling case. For the weak coupling case, we find that the mean radial velocity of clumps is linearly proportional to the coefficient of the drag force. We show that the tidally disrupted clumps would lead to accumulation of the debris to form a debris disk in the Shakura-Sunyaev regime. The entire hot ADAF will be efficiently cooled down by photons from the debris disk, giving rise to collapse of the ADAF and quench the clumpy accretion. Subsequently, evaporation of the collapsed ADAF drives resuscitate of a new clumpy-ADAF, resulting in an oscillation of the global clumpy-ADAF. Applications of the present model are briefly discussed to X-ray binaries, ionization nuclear emission regions (LINERs) and BL Lac objects.

Uniaxial Phase Transition in Si : Ab initio Calculations

Based on a previously proposed thermodynamic analysis, we study the relative stabilities of five Si phases under uniaxial compression using ab initio methods. The five phases are diamond, beta-tin, sh, sc, and hcp structures. The possible phase-transition patterns were investigated by considering the phase transitions between any two chosen phases of the five phases. By analyzing the different conributions to the relative pahse stability, we identified the most important factors in reducing the phase-transition pressures at uniaxial compression. We also show that it is possible to have phase transitions occur only when the phases are under uniaxial compression, in spite of no phase transition when under hydrostatic commpression. Taking all five phases into consideration, the phase diagram at uniaxial compression was constructed for pressures under 20 GPa. The stable phases were found to be diamond, beta-tin and sh structures, i.e. the same as those when under hydrostatic condition. According to the phase diagram, direct phase transition from the diamond to the sh phase is possible if the applied uniaxial pressures, on increasing, satisfy the condition of Px>Pz. Simiilarly, the sh-to-beta-tin transition on increeasing pressures is also possible if the applied uniaxial pressures are varied from the condition of Px>Pz, on which the phase of sh is stable, to that of Px<Pz, on which the beta-tin is stable.
