Neutrinoless $\beta\beta$-Decay in DCEQTDA

We have recently developed a nuclear model, which is a natural extension of the $pn$-QRPA model, specially designed to describe double charge exchange (DCE) processes generated by two-body DCE transition operators. It is based on the Quasiparticle Tamm-Dancoff Approximation (QTDA) for $pn$ and $2p2n$ excitations in intermediate and final nuclei, respectively, and will be called DCEQTDA. As such, this model, having the same number of free parameters as the $pn$-QRPA, also brings into play the excitations of four quasiparticles to build up the final nuclear states, which are then used to evaluate the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for all $0^+$ and $2^+$ final states, including resonances, and not just for the ground state as in $pn$-QRPA. In addition, it allows us to evaluate: (a) the values of $Q_{\beta\beta}$, (b) the excitation energies in final nuclei, and (c) the DCE sum rules, which are fulfilled in the DCEQTDA. So far, this model has been used mainly to calculate double beta decays with the emission of two neutrinos ($2\nu\beta\beta$-decay). Here, we extend it to the study of these processes when no neutrinos are emitted ($0\nu\beta\beta$-decay), evaluating them in a series of nuclei, but paying special attention to (i) $^{76}$Se, which have been measured recently in the GERDA and MAJORANA experiments, and (ii) $^{124}$Te, for which the first direct observation of the double electron capture $2\nu$ has been performed with the XENON1T dark matter detector. We obtain good agreement with the data for both the ground state and the excited states. The validity of the DCEQTDA model is checked by comparing the calculation with the experimental data for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ NMEs, and for the $Q_{\beta\beta}$, in a series of nuclei.

Relativistic model for the nonmesonic weak decay of single-lambda hypernuclei

Having in mind its future extension for theoretical investigations related to charmed nuclei, we develop a relativistic formalism for the nonmesonic weak decay of single-$Λ$ hypernuclei in the framework of the independent-particle shell model and with the dynamics represented by the $(π,K)$ one-meson-exchange model. Numerical results for the one-nucleon-induced transition rates of ${}^{12}_Λ\textrm{C}$ are presented and compared with those obtained in the analogous nonrelativistic calculation. There is satisfactory agreement between the two approaches, and the most noteworthy difference is that the ratio $Γ_{n}/Γ_{p}$ is appreciably higher and closer to the experimental value in the relativistic calculation. Large discrepancies between ours and previous relativistic calculations are found, for which we do not encounter any fully satisfactory explanation. The most recent experimental data is well reproduced by our results. In summary, we have achieved our purpose to develop a reliable model for the relativistic calculation of the nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei, which can now be extended to evaluate similar processes in charmed nuclei.

Pauli blocking and medium effects in nucleon knockout reactions

We study medium modifications of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections and their influence on the nucleon knockout reactions. Using the eikonal approximation, we compare the results obtained with free NN cross sections with those obtained with a purely geometrical treatment of Pauli-blocking and with NN obtained with more elaborated Dirac-Bruecker methods. The medium effects are parametrized in terms of the baryon density. We focus on symmetric nuclear matter, although the geometrical Pauli-blocking allows for the treatment of asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that medium effects can change the nucleon knockout cross sections and momentum distributions up to 10% in the energy range E=50-300 MeV/nucleon. The effect is more evident in reactions involving halo nuclei.

Kinematical and nonlocality effects on the nonmesonic weak hypernuclear decay

We derive in detail the transition potential for nonmesonic lambda-hypernuclear decay in a one-meson-exchange model involving the full pseudoscalar and vector meson octets and including two effects that have been systematically omitted in the literature. These are the kinematical effects due to the difference between the lambda and nucleon masses and the first-order nonlocality corrections. Numerical results for $^{12}_Λ$C and $^5_Λ$He are presented and they show that the combined kinematical plus nonlocal corrections have an appreciable influence on the partial decay rates. However, this is somewhat diminished in the main decay observables: the total nonmesonic rate, the neutron-to-proton branching ratio, and the asymmetry parameter. The latter two still cannot be reconciled with the available experimental data. The existing theoretical predictions for the sign of the asymmetry parameter in $^5_Λ$He are confirmed.

Toward a global description of the nucleus-nucleus interaction

Extensive systematization of theoretical and experimental nuclear densities and of optical potential strengths exctracted from heavy-ion elastic scattering data analyses at low and intermediate energies are presented. The energy-dependence of the nuclear potential is accounted for within a model based on the nonlocal nature of the interaction. The systematics indicate that the heavy-ion nuclear potential can be described in a simple global way through a double-folding shape, which basically depends only on the density of nucleons of the partners in the collision. The poissibility of extracting information about the nucleon-nucleon interaction from the heavy-ion potential is investigated.

Rho-Nucleon Tensor Coupling and Charge-Exchange Resonances

The Gamow-Teller resonances are discussed in the context of a self-consistent RPA, based on the relativistic mean field theory. We inquire on the possibility of substituting the phenomenological Landau-Migdal force by a microscopic nucleon-nucleon interaction generated from the rho-nucleon tensor coupling. The effect of this coupling turns out to be very small when the short range correlations are not taken into account, but too large when these correlations are simulated by the simple extraction of the contact terms from the resulting nucleon-nucleon interaction.

Relativistic RPA for Isobaric Analogue and Gamow-Teller Resonances in Closed Shell Nuclei

We perform a self-consistent relativistic RPA calculation for the isobaric analogue and Gamow-Teller resonances based on relativistic mean field theory results for the ground states of $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb. We use the parameter set NL1 for the $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons, and experimental values for the pion and nucleon. An extra parameter, related to the intensity of the contact term in the pion-exchange interaction, is crucial to reproduce the latter resonances.
