Hydrodynamic force on a small squirmer moving with a time-dependent velocity at small Reynolds numbers

We calculate the hydrodynamic force on a small spherical, unsteady squirmer moving with a time-dependent velocity in a fluid at rest, taking into account convective and unsteady fluid inertia effects in perturbation theory. Our results generalise those of Lovalenti and Brady (1993) from passive to active spherical particles. We find that convective inertia changes the history-contribution to the hydrodynamic force, as it does for passive particles. We determine how the hydrodynamic force depends on the swimming gait of the unsteady squirmer. Since swimming breaks the spherical symmetry of the problem, the force is not completely determined by the outer solution of the asymptotic matching problem, as it is for passive spheres. There are additional contributions due to the inhomogeneous solution of the inner problem. We also compute the disturbance flow, illustrating convective and unsteady effects when the particle experiences a sudden start followed by a sudden stop.

Tree crowns grow into self-similar shapes controlled by gravity and light sensing

Plants have developed different tropisms: in particular, they re-orient the growth of their branches towards light (phototropism) or upwards (gravitropism). How these tropisms affect the shape of a tree crown remains unanswered. We address this question by developing a propagating front model of tree growth. This model being length-free, it leads to self-similar solutions, independent of the initial conditions, at long time. Varying the intensities of each tropism, different self-similar shapes emerge, including singular ones. Interestingly, these shapes bear similarities with existing tree species. It is concluded that the core of specific crown shapes in trees relies on the balance between tropisms.

Triadic instability of a non-resonant precessing fluid cylinder

Flows forced by a precessional motion can exhibit instabilities of crucial importance, whether they concern the fuel of a flying object or the liquid core of a telluric planet. So far, stability analyses of these flows have focused on the special case of a resonant forcing. Here, we address the instability of the flow inside a precessing cylinder in the general case. We first show that the base flow forced by the cylinder precession is a superposition of a vertical or horizontal shear flow and an infinite sum of forced modes. We then perform a linear stability analysis of this base flow by considering its triadic resonance with two free Kelvin modes. Finally, we derive the amplitude equations of the free Kelvin modes and obtain an expression of the instability threshold and growth rate.
