Spin-glass states generated in a van der Waals magnet by alkali-ion intercalation

Tuning magnetic properties in layered van der Waals (vdW) materials has captured a significant attention due to the efficient control of ground-states by heterostructuring and external stimuli. Electron doping by electrostatic gating, interfacial charge transfer and intercalation is particularly effective in manipulating the exchange and spin-orbit properties, resulting in a control of Curie temperature ($T_{\text{C}}$) and magnetic anisotropy. Here, we discover an uncharted role of intercalation to generate magnetic frustration. As a model study, we intercalate Na atoms into the vdW gaps of pristine Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT) where generated magnetic frustration leads to emerging spin-glass states coexisting with a ferromagnetic order. A series of dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements/analysis confirms the formation of magnetic clusters representing slow dynamics with a distribution of relaxation times. The intercalation also modifies other macroscopic physical parameters including the significant enhancement of $T_{\text{C}}$ from 66\,K to 240\,K and the switching of magnetic easy-hard axis direction. Our study identifies intercalation as a unique route to generate emerging frustrated spin states in simple vdW crystals.

Initial operation and data processing on a system for real-time evaluation of Thomson scattering signals on the Large Helical Device

A scalable system for real-time analysis of electron temperature and density based on signals from the Thomson scattering diagnostic, initially developed for and installed on the NSTX-U experiment, was recently adapted for the Large Helical Device (LHD) and operated for the first time during plasma discharges. During its initial operation run, it routinely recorded and processed signals for four spatial points at the laser repetition rate of 30 Hz, well within the system's rated capability for 60 Hz. We present examples of data collected from this initial run and describe subsequent adaptations to the analysis code to improve the fidelity of the temperature calculations.

Formation of Nickel-Platinum Silicides on a Silicon Substrate: Structure, Phase Stability, and Diffusion from Ab initio Computations

The formation of Ni(Pt)silicides on a Si(001) surface is investigated using an ab initio approach. After deposition of a Ni overlayer alloyed with Pt, the calculations reveal fast diffusion of Ni atoms into the Si lattice, which leads initially to the formation of Ni2Si. At the same time Si atoms are found to diffuse into the metallic overlayer. The transformation of Ni2Si into NiSi is likely to proceed via a vacancy-assisted diffusion mechanism. Silicon atoms are the main diffusing species in this transformation, migrating from the Si substrate through the growing NiSi layer into the Ni2Si. Pt atoms have a low solubility in Ni2Si and prefer Si-sites in the NiSi lattice, thereby stabilizing the NiSi phase. The diffusivity of Pt is lower than that of Ni. Furthermore, Pt atoms have a tendency to segregate to interfaces, thereby acting as diffusion barriers.
