Graphene-based topological insulator in the presence of a disclination submitted to a uniform magnetic field

In this paper we investigate quasiparticles in graphene-based topological insulator with a wedge disclination in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. In particular, we consider a massive spinless model. The Landau levels are analytically found for the described system. We show that the Landau levels are lifted for a specific range of the parameter ν. In addition, we also show that, for appropriate parameter values, one finds gapless and gapped states.

Graphene wormhole trapped by external magnetic field

In this work we study the behavior of massless fermions in a graphene wormhole and in the presence of an external magnetic field. The graphene wormhole is made from two sheets of graphene that play the roles of asymptotically flat spaces connected through a carbon nanotube with a zig-zag boundary. We solve the massless Dirac equation in this geometry and analyze its wave function. We show that the energy spectra of these solutions exhibit similar behavior to Landau levels.

A Quantum Ring in a Nanosphere

In this paper we study the quantum dynamics of an electron/hole in a two-dimensional quantum ring within a spherical space. For this geometry, we consider a harmonic confining potential. Suggesting that the quantum ring is affected by the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux and an uniform magnetic field, we solve the Schrödinger equation for this problem and obtain exactly the eigenvalues of energy and corresponding eigenfunctions for this nanometric quantum system. Afterwards, we calculate the magnetization and persistent current are calculated, and discuss influence of curvature of space on these values.

Comparative study on magnetoresistance of carbon-cobalt nanocomposite thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition

We present a comparative study on the influence of applied magnetic field on the resistance of $C_{1-x}Co_x$ thin films (with $x=0.1$, $0.15$ and $0.2$) grown on $Si$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique. It is found that the behavior of magnetoresistance (MR) drastically depends on the temperature. Namely, at low temperatures MR is positive and its behavior is governed by the field mediated weak localization scenario. While at high temperatures MR turns negative and its behavior is dominated by electron scattering on ferromagnetic cobalt atoms.

Linear confinement of a scalar particle in a Gödel-type spacetime

Based on the studies of confinement of quarks, we introduce a linear scalar potential into the relativistic quantum dynamics of a scalar particle. Then, we analyse the linear confinement of a relativistic scalar particle in a Gödel-type spacetime in the presence of a topological defect. We consider a Gödel-type spacetime associated with null curvature, i.e., the Som-Raychaudhuri spacetime, which is characterized by the presence of vorticity in the spacetime. Then, we search for analytical solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation and analyse the influence of the topology of the cosmic string and the vorticity on the relativistic energy levels.

Evidence for field induced proximity type behavior in ferromagnetic nanofluid

We report some unusual magnetic properties observed in CoFe2O4 based ferrofluid (with an average particle size of D = 6 nm). More precisely, in addition to the low-field ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition with an intrinsic Curie temperature T_Cb=350K, a second phase transition with an extrinsic Curie temperature T_Cw = 266K emerges at higher (saturating) magnetic field. The transitions meet at the crossover point T_cr = 210 K. The origin of the second transition is attributed to magnetic field induced proximity type interaction between FM particles through non-FM layers.

Evolution of Landau levels in graphene-based topological insulators in the presence of wedge disclinations

In this paper we consider modification of electronic properties of graphene-based topological insulator in the presence of wedge disclination and magnetic field by adopting the Kane-Mele model with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Using the properly defined Dirac-Weyl equation for this system, an exact solution for the Landau levels is obtained. The influence of the topological defect on the evolution of Landau levels is discussed.

Fermions in Gödel-type background space-times with torsion and the Landau quantization

In this paper, we analyze Dirac fermions in Gödel-type background space-times with torsion. We also consider the Gödel-type spacetimes embedded in a topological defect background. We show that relativistic bound states solutions to the Dirac equation can be obtained by dealing with three cases of the Gödel-type solutions with torsion, where a cosmic string passes through these three cases of the space-time. We obtain the relativistic energy levels for all cases of the Gödel-type solutions with torsion with a cosmic string, where we show that there exists an analogy with the Landau levels for Dirac particles. We also show that the presence of torsion in the space-time yields new contributions to the relativistic spectrum of energies and that the presence of the topological defect modifies the degeneracy of the relativistic energy levels.

Analogue of the quantum Hall effect for neutral particles with magnetic dipole moment

In this paper we investigate a possibility for the existence of an analog of the Quantum Hall Effect for neutral particles with a permanent magnetic moment $μ$ in the presence of crossed inhomogeneous magnetic and electric fields. We predict the appearance of Hall conductivity $σ_H=(e^2/h)ν(μ)$ with the Landau filling factor $ν(μ)\propto μ^2$. The estimates of the model parameters suggest quite an optimistic possibility to experimentally verify this prediction in optically trapped clouds of atomic BEC.

On a relativistic scalar particle subject to the Klein-Gordon oscillator, the Coulomb potential and a linear scalar potential

The relativistic quantum dynamics of an electrically charged particle subject to the Klein-Gordon oscillator and the Coulomb potential is investigated. By searching for relativistic bound states, a particular quantum effect can be observed: a dependence of the angular frequency of the Klein-Gordon oscillator on the quantum numbers of the system. The meaning of this behaviour of the angular frequency is that only some specific values of the angular frequency of the Klein-Gordon oscillator are permitted in order to obtain bound state solutions. As an example, we obtain both the angular frequency and the energy level associated with the ground state of the relativistic system. Further, we analyse the behaviour of an electrically charged particle subject to the Klein-Gordon oscillator, the Coulomb potential and a linear scalar potential.

Lorentz symmetry breaking effects on relativistic EPR correlations

Lorentz symmetry breaking effects on relativistic EPR (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) correlations are discussed. From the modified Maxwell theory coupled to gravity, we establish a possible scenario of the Lorentz symmetry violation and write an effective metric for the Minkowski spacetime. Then, we obtain the Wigner rotation angle via the Fermi-Walker transport of spinors and consider the WKB ((Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin) approximation in order to study the influence of Lorentz symmetry breaking effects on the relativistic EPR correlations.

Wigner rotation via Fermi-Walker transport and relativistic EPR correlations in the Schwarzschild spacetime

The Wigner rotation angle for a particle in a circular motion in the Schwarzschild spacetime is obtained via the Fermi-Walker transport of spinors. Then, by applying the WKB approximation, a possible application of the Fermi-Walker transport of spinors in relativistic EPR correlations is discussed, where it is shown that the spins of the correlated particle undergo a precession in an analogous way to that obtained by Terashima and Ueda [H. Terashima and M. Ueda, Phys. Rev. A {\bf69}, 032113 (2004)] via the application of successive infinitesimal Lorentz transformations. Moreover, from the WKB approach, it is also shown that the degree of violation of the Bell inequality depends on the Wigner rotation angle obtained via the Fermi-Walker transport. Finally, the relativistic effects from the geometry of the spacetime and the accelerated motion of the correlated particles is discussed in the nonrelativistic limit.

On the Klein-Gordon oscillator subject to a Coulomb-type potential

By introducing the scalar potential as modification in the mass term of the Klein-Gordon equation, the influence of a Coulomb-type potential on the Klein-Gordon oscillator is investigated. Relativistic bound states solutions are achieved to both attractive and repulsive Coulomb-type potentials and the arising of a quantum effect characterized by the dependence of angular frequency of the Klein-Gordon oscillator on the quantum numbers of the system is shown.

On the interaction of the Dirac oscillator with the Aharonov-Casher system in topological defect backgrounds

In this paper, we study the influence of the Aharonov-Casher effect [Y. Aharonov and A. Casher, Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 319 (1984).] on the Dirac oscillator in three different scenarios of general relativity: the Minkowski spacetime, the cosmic string spacetime and the cosmic dislocation spacetime. In this way, we solve the Dirac equation and obtain the energy levels for bound states and the Dirac spinors for positive-energy solutions. We show that the relativistic energy levels depend on the Aharonov-Casher geometric phase. We also discuss the influence of curvature and torsion on the relativistic energy levels and the Dirac spinors due to the topology of the cosmic string and cosmic dislocation spacetimes.

Persistent spin currents in an elastic Landau system

We consider a neutral particle with permanent magnetic dipole moment in an elastic medium with the presence of a uniform distribution of screw dislocations interacting with a radial electric field. We show that the uniform distribution of dislocations plays the role of an effective uniform magnetic field, and obtain a spectrum of energy which depends on the Aharonov-Casher geometric phase [Y. Aharonov and A. Casher, Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 319 (1984)]. Moreover, from the dependence of energy levels on the Aharonov-Casher geometric phase, we calculate the persistent spin currents in this elastic Landau system.

The aether-modified gravity and the Godel metric

We formulate the nonminimal aether-modified gravity whose action represents itself as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action and the CPT-even Lorentz-breaking aether-like gravity term proposed by Carroll. For this theory, we show that the Gödel metric solves the modified Einstein equations under a corresponding modification of the matter, while, for the small Lorentz-breaking corrections, the matter turns out to be usual. On the other side, if the matter is suggested to be the same as in the usual general relativity, the Gödel metric is modified by additive aether terms.

Kaluza-Klein description of geometric phases in graphene

In this paper, we use the Kaluza-Klein approach to describe topological defects in a graphene layer. Using this approach, we propose a geometric model allowing to discuss the quantum flux in $K$-spin subspace. Within this model, the graphene layer with a topological defect is described by a four-dimensional metric, where the deformation produced by the topological defect is introduced via the three-dimensional part of metric tensor, while an Abelian gauge field is introduced via an extra dimension. We use this new geometric model to discuss the arising of topological quantum phases in a graphene layer with a topological defect.
