Axion search with a quantum-limited ferromagnetic haloscope

A ferromagnetic axion haloscope searches for Dark Matter in the form of axions by exploiting their interaction with electronic spins. It is composed of an axion-to-electromagnetic field transducer coupled to a sensitive rf detector. The former is a photon-magnon hybrid system, and the latter is based on a quantum-limited Josephson parametric amplifier. The hybrid system consists of ten 2.1 mm diameter YIG spheres coupled to a single microwave cavity mode by means of a static magnetic field. Our setup is the most sensitive rf spin-magnetometer ever realized. The minimum detectable field is $5.5\times10^{-19}\,$T with 9 h integration time, corresponding to a limit on the axion-electron coupling constant $g_{aee}\le1.7\times10^{-11}$ at 95% CL. The scientific run of our haloscope resulted in the best limit on DM-axions to electron coupling constant in a frequency span of about 120 MHz, corresponding to the axion mass range $42.4$-$43.1\,μ$eV. This is also the first apparatus to perform an axion mass scanning by changing the static magnetic field.

Tunable vortex dynamics in proximity junction arrays: a possible accurate and sensitive 2D THz detector

An array of superconducting proximity islands has been shown to be highly tunable by electric and magnetic fields. Indeed, a small change in the electric and magnetic field can tune the system from a vortex Mott insulator to a vortex metal. This transition from localized to a non-localized state can occur as soon as the density of the superconducting vortices matches the density of the pinning sites in a non defective structure. The possibility of further modulation of non-localized superconducting states via enhancement of the superconducting order parameter or modulation of the Josephson plasma frequency is discussed. Based on the non-bolometric effects associated with the occurrence of non-equilibrium phenomena in this original superconducting networks we discuss also the possible applications of this array for a conceptually new type of radiation detector.

KLASH Conceptual Design Report

The last decade witnessed an increasing interest in axions and axion-like particles with many theoretical works published and many new experimental proposals that started a real race towards their discovery. This paper is the Conceptual Design Report of the KLASH (KLoe magnet for Axion SearcH) experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF). The idea of this experiment has been stimulated by the availability of the large volume superconducting magnet, with a moderate magnetic field of 0.6 T, used in the KLOE detector at the DAFNE collider. The main conclusion we draw from this report is the possibility to build and put in operation at LNF in 2-3 years a large haloscope with the sensitivity to KSVZ axions in the low mass range between 0.2 and 1 $μ$eV, complementary to that of other experiments. Timeline and cost are competitive with respect to other proposals in the same mass region thanks to the availability of most of the infrastructure, in particular the superconducting magnet and the cryogenics plant.

Galactic axions search with a superconducting resonant cavity

To account for the dark matter content in our Universe, post-inflationary scenarios predict for the QCD axion a mass in the range $(10-10^3)\,μ\mbox{eV}$. Searches with haloscope experiments in this mass range require the monitoring of resonant cavity modes with frequency above 5\,GHz, where several experimental limitations occur due to linear amplifiers, small volumes, and low quality factors of Cu resonant cavities. In this paper we deal with the last issue, presenting the result of a search for galactic axions using a haloscope based on a $36\,\mbox{cm}^3$ NbTi superconducting cavity. The cavity worked at $T=4\,\mbox{K}$ in a 2\,T magnetic field and exhibited a quality factor $Q_0= 4.5\times10^5$ for the TM010 mode at 9\,GHz. With such values of $Q$ the axion signal is significantly increased with respect to copper cavity haloscopes. Operating this setup we set the limit $g_{aγγ}<1.03\times10^{-12}\,\mbox{GeV}^{-1}$ on the axion photon coupling for a mass of about 37\,$μ$eV. A comprehensive study of the NbTi cavity at different magnetic fields, temperatures, and frequencies is also presented.

The Klash Proposal: Status and Perspectives

Recently some of the authors proposed a search for galactic axions with mass about 0.2~$μ$eV using a large volume resonant cavity, tens of cubic meters, cooled down to 4~K and immersed in a magnetic field of about 0.6~T generated inside the superconducting magnet of the KLOE experiment located at the National Laboratory of Frascati of INFN. This experiment, called KLASH (KLoe magnet for Axion SearcH), has a potential sensitivity on the axion-to-photon coupling, $g_{aγγ}$, of about $6\times10^{-17}$ $\mbox{GeV}^{-1}$, reaching the region predicted by KSVZ\cite{KSVZ} and DFSZ\cite{DFSZ} models of QCD axions. We report here the status of the project.

Construction techniques and performances of a full-size prototype Micromegas chamber for the ATLAS muon spectrometer upgrade

A full-size prototype of a Micromegas precision tracking chamber for the upgrade of the ATLAS detector at the LHC Collider has been built between October 2015 and April 2016. This paper describes in detail the procedures used in constructing the single modules of the chamber in various INFN laboratories and the final assembly at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF). Results of the chamber exposure to the CERN SPS/H8 beam line in June 2016 are also presented. The performances achieved in the construction and the results of the test beam are compared with the requirements, which are imposed by the severe environment during the data-taking of the LHC foreseen for the next years.

Operation of a ferromagnetic axion haloscope at $m_a=58\,μ$eV

Axions, originally proposed to solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, emerge now as leading candidates of WISP dark matter. The rich phenomenology associated to the light and stable QCD axion can be described as an effective magnetic field that can be experimentally investigated. For the QUAX experiment, dark matter axions are searched by means of their resonant interactions with electronic spins in a magnetized sample. In principle, axion-induced magnetization changes can be detected by embedding a sample in an rf cavity in a static magnetic field. In this work we describe the operation of a prototype ferromagnetic haloscope, with a sensitivity limited by thermal fluctuations and receiver noise. With a preliminary dark matter search, we are able to set an upper limit on the coupling constant of DFSZ axions to electrons $g_{aee}<4.9\times10^{-10}$ at 95\% C.L. for a mass of $58\,μ$eV (i.\,e. 14\,GHz). This is the first experimental result with an apparatus exploiting the coupling between cosmological axions and electrons.

Searching for galactic axions through magnetized media: QUAX status report

The current status of the QUAX R\&D program is presented. QUAX is a feasibility study for a detection of axion as dark matter based on the coupling to the electrons. The relevant signal is a magnetization change of a magnetic material placed inside a resonant microwave cavity and polarized with a static magnetic field.

IRIDE White Book, An Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure based on Dual Electron linacs&lasers

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities.

Observation of the rare eta->e+e-e+e- decay with the KLOE experiment

We report the first observation of the rare eta->e+e-e+e- decay based on 1.7 fb^{-1} collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE phi-factory. The selection of the e+e-e+e- final state is fully inclusive of radiation. We have identified 362 +- 29 events resulting in a branching ratio of (2.4 +- 0.2_stat+bckg +- 0.1_syst) x 10^{-5}.

Measurement of $Γ(η\to π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η\to π^+π^-π^0)$ with KLOE experiment

We report the measurement of the ratio $Γ(η\to π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η\to π^+π^-π^0)$ analyzing a large sample of $ϕ\to ηγ$ decays recorded with the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+ e^-$ collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb$^{-1}$. The $η\to π^+π^-γ$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $ρ$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. The presence of the direct term affects the partial width value. Our result $R_η=Γ(η\to π^+ π^- γ)/Γ(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)= 0.1838\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0030_{syst}$ is in agreement with a recent CLEO measurement, which differs by more 3 $σ$ from the average of previous results.

Measurement of sigma(e+ e- -> pi+ pi-) from threshold to 0.85 GeV^2 using Initial State Radiation with the KLOE detector

We have measured the cross section of the radiative process e+e- -> pi+pi-gamma with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPHNE, from events taken at a CM energy W=1 GeV. Initial state radiation allows us to obtain the cross section for e+e- -> pi+pi-, the pion form factor |F_pi|^2 and the dipion contribution to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, Delta a_mu^{pipi} = (478.5+-2.0_{stat}+-5.0_{syst}+-4.5_{th}) x 10^{-10} in the range 0.1 < M_{pipi}^2 < 0.85 GeV^2, where the theoretical error includes a SU(3) ChPT estimate of the uncertainty on photon radiation from the final pions. The discrepancy between the Standard Model evaluation of a_mu and the value measured by the Muon g-2 collaboration at BNL is confirmed.

Evolutionary crystal structure prediction and novel high-pressure phases

Prediction of stable crystal structures at given pressure-temperature conditions, based only on the knowledge of the chemical composition, is a central problem of condensed matter physics. This extremely challenging problem is often termed "crystal structure prediction problem", and recently developed evolutionary algorithm USPEX (Universal Structure Predictor: Evolutionary Xtallography) made an important progress in solving it, enabling efficient and reliable prediction of structures with up to ~40 atoms in the unit cell using ab initio methods. Here we review this methodology, as well as recent progress in analyzing energy landscape of solids (which also helps to analyze results of USPEX runs). We show several recent applications - (1) prediction of new high-pressure phases of CaCO3, (2) search for the structure of the polymeric phase of CO2 ("phase V"), (3) high-pressure phases of oxygen, (4) exploration of possible stable compounds in the Xe-C system at high pressures, (5) exotic high-pressure phases of elements boron and sodium.

Measurement of the $η\to 3π^{0}$ slope parameter $α$ with the KLOE detector

We present a measurement of the slope parameter $α$ for the $η\to 3π^{0}$ decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory, based on a background free sample of $\sim$ 17 millions $η$ mesons produced in $ϕ$ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine $α= -0.0301 \pm 0.0035\,stat\;_{-0.0035}^{+0.0022}\,syst\,$. The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

A global fit to determine the pseudoscalar mixing angle and the gluonium content of the eta' meson

We update the values of the eta-eta' mixing angle and of the eta' gluonium content by fitting our measurement R_phi = BR(phi to eta' gamma)/ BR(phi to eta gamma) together with several vector meson radiative decays to pseudoscalars (V to P gamma), pseudoscalar mesons radiative decays to vectors (P to V gamma) and the eta' to gamma gamma, pi^0 to gamma gamma widths. From the fit we extract a gluonium fraction of Z^2_G = 0.12 +- 0.04, the pseudoscalar mixing angle psi_P = (40.4 +- 0.6) degree and the phi-omega mixing angle psi_V = (3.32 +- 0.09) degree. Z^2_G and psi_P are fairly consistent with those previously published. We also evaluate the impact on the eta' gluonium content determination of future experimental improvements of the eta' branching ratios and decay width.

Search for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma with the KLOE experiment

We have searched for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma, by detecting K_s pairs plus a photon and with the K_s-mesons decaying to pi^+ pi^-, in a sample of about 1.5x 10^9 phi-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAFNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f_0(980) gamma, a_0(980) gamma. We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR (phi -> K0 K0bar gamma) < 1.9x10^-8 at 90% C.L. .

Measurement of the branching ratio and search for a CP violating asymmetry in the eta -> pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay at KLOE

We have studied the eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay using about 1.7 fb^-1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE phi-factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions eta mesons produced in phi radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR(eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma)) = (26.8 +/- 0.9_Stat. +/- 0.7_Syst.) x 10^-5. We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd pipi-ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A_phi = (-0.6 +/- 2.5_Stat. +/- 1.8_Syst.) x 10^-2.
