Quantum criticality in the cubic heavy-fermion system CeIn_{3-x}Sn_x

We report a comprehensive study of CeIn$_{3-x}$Sn$_x$ $(0.55 \leq x \leq 0.8)$ single crystals close to the antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) at $x_c\approx 0.67$ by means of the low-temperature thermal expansion and Grüneisen parameter. This system represents the first example for a {\it cubic} heavy fermion (HF) in which $T_{\rm N}$ can be suppressed {\it continuously} down to T=0. A characteristic sign change of the Grüneisen parameter between the AF and paramagnetic state indicates the accumulation of entropy close to the QCP. The observed quantum critical behavior is compatible with the predictions of the itinerant theory for three-dimensional critical spinfluctuations. This has important implications for the role of the dimensionality in HF QCPs.

Quantum Criticality in doped CePd_1-xRh_x Ferromagnet

CePd_1-xRh_x alloys exhibit a continuous evolution from ferromagnetism (T_C= 6.5 K) at x = 0 to a mixed valence (MV) state at x = 1. We have performed a detailed investigation on the suppression of the ferromagnetic (F) phase in this alloy using dc-(χ_dc) and ac-susceptibility (χ_ac), specific heat (C_m), resistivity (ρ) and thermal expansion (β) techniques. Our results show a continuous decrease of T_C (x) with negative curvature down to T_C = 3K at x*= 0.65, where a positive curvature takes over. Beyond x*, a cusp in cac is traced down to T_C* = 25 mK at x = 0.87, locating the critical concentration between x = 0.87 and 0.90. The quantum criticality of this region is recognized by the -log(T/T_0) dependence of C_m/T, which transforms into a T^-q (~0.5) one at x = 0.87. At high temperature, this system shows the onset of valence instability revealed by a deviation from Vegard's law (at x_V~0.75) and increasing hybridization effects on high temperature χ_dc and ρ. Coincidentally, a Fermi liquid contribution to the specific heat arises from the MV component, which becomes dominant at the CeRh limit. In contrast to antiferromagnetic systems, no C_m/T flattening is observed for x > x_cr rather the mentioned power law divergence, which coincides with a change of sign of β. The coexistence of F and MV components and the sudden changes in the T dependencies are discussed in the context of randomly distributed magnetic and Kondo couplings.

Quasiquartet CEF ground state with possible quadrupolar ordering in the tetragonal compound YbRu$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$

e have investigated the magnetic properties of YbRu$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ by means of magnetic susceptibility $χ$(T), specific heat C(T) and electrical resistivity $ρ$(T) measurements performed on flux grown single crystals. The Curie-Weiss behavior of $χ$(T) along the easy plane, the large magnetic entropy at low temperatures and the weak Kondo like increase in $ρ$(T) proves a stable trivalent Yb state. Anomalies in C(T), $ρ$(T) and $χ$(T) at T$_{0}$ = 10.2 K, T$_{1}$ = 6.5 K and T$_{2}$ = 5.7 K evidence complex ordering phenomena, T$_{0}$ being larger than the highest Yb magnetic ordering temperature found up to now. The magnetic entropy just above T$_{0}$ amounts to almost Rln4, indicating that the crystal electric field (CEF) ground state is a quasiquartet instead of the expected doublet. The behavior at T$_{0}$ is rather unusual and suggest that this transition is related to quadrupolar ordering, being a consequence of the CEF quasiquartet ground state. The combination of a quasiquartet CEF ground state, a high ordering temperature, and the relevance of quadrupolar interactions makes YbRu$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ a rather unique system among Yb based compounds.

Non-Fermi liquid states in the pressurized $CeCu_2(Si_{1-x}Ge_x)_2$ system: two critical points

In the archetypal strongly correlated electron superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and its Ge-substituted alloys CeCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$ two quantum phase transitions -- one magnetic and one of so far unknown origin -- can be crossed as a function of pressure \cite{Yuan 2003a}. We examine the associated anomalous normal state by detailed measurements of the low temperature resistivity ($ρ$) power law exponent $α$. At the lower critical point (at $p_{c1}$, $1\leqα\leq 1.5$) $α$ depends strongly on Ge concentration $x$ and thereby on disorder level, consistent with a Hlubina-Rice-Rosch scenario of critical scattering off antiferromagnetic fluctuations. By contrast, $α$ is independent of $x$ at the upper quantum phase transition (at $p_{c2}$, $α\simeq 1$), suggesting critical scattering from local or Q=0 modes, in agreement with a density/valence fluctuation approach.

Anisotropy, disorder, and superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 under high pressure

Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a small but significant change in Tc for different orientations with respect to the tetragonal c-axis. Coexistence of superconductivity and residual resistivity close to the Ioffe-Regel limit around 5 GPa provides a compelling argument for the existence of a valence-fluctuation mediated pairing interaction at high pressure in CeCu2Si2.

Ferromagnetic quantum critical fluctuations in YbRh_2(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_2

The bulk magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,B)$ of YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$ has been investigated %by ac-and dc-magnetometry at low temperatures and close to the field-induced quantum critical point at $B_c=0.027$ T. For $B\leq 0.05$ T a Curie-Weiss law with a negative Weiss temperature is observed at temperatures below 0.3 K. Outside this region, the susceptibility indicates ferromagnetic quantum critical fluctuations: $χ(T)\propto T^{-0.6}$ above 0.3 K, while at low temperatures the Pauli susceptibility follows $χ_0\propto (B-B_c)^{-0.6}$ and scales with the coefficient of the $T^2$ term in the electrical resistivity. The Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio is highly enhanced and increases up to 30 close to the critical field.

Hall-effect evolution across a heavy-fermion quantum critical point

A quantum critical point (QCP) develops in a material at absolute zero when a new form of order smoothly emerges in its ground state. QCPs are of great current interest because of their singular ability to influence the finite temperature properties of materials. Recently, heavy-fermion metals have played a key role in the study of antiferromagnetic QCPs. To accommodate the heavy electrons, the Fermi surface of the heavy-fermion paramagnet is larger than that of an antiferromagnet. An important unsolved question concerns whether the Fermi surface transformation at the QCP develops gradually, as expected if the magnetism is of spin density wave (SDW) type, or suddenly as expected if the heavy electrons are abruptly localized by magnetism. Here we report measurements of the low-temperature Hall coefficient ($R_H$) - a measure of the Fermi surface volume - in the heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 upon field-tuning it from an antiferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state. $R_H$ undergoes an increasingly rapid change near the QCP as the temperature is lowered, extrapolating to a sudden jump in the zero temperature limit. We interpret these results in terms of a collapse of the large Fermi surface and of the heavy-fermion state itself precisely at the QCP.

Scaling of the magnetic entropy and magnetization in YbRh_2(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_2

The magnetic entropy of YbRh_2(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_2 is derived from low-temperature ($T\geq 18$ mK) specific heat measurements. Upon field-tuning the system to its antiferromagnetic quantum critical point unique temperature over magnetic field scaling is observed indicating the disintegration of heavy quasiparticles. The field dependence of the entropy equals the temperature dependence of the dc-magnetization as expected from the Maxwell relation. This proves that the quantum-critical fluctuations affect the thermal and magnetic properties in a consistent way.

Low temperature magnetic phase diagram of the cubic non-Fermi liquid system CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x

In this paper we report a comprehensive study of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), resistivity (ρ), and specific heat (C_P), down to 0.5 K of the cubic CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x alloy. The ground state of this system evolves from antiferromagnetic (AF) in CeIn_3(T_N=10.2 K) to intermediate-valent in CeSn_3, and represents the first example of a Ce-lattice cubic non-Fermi liquid (NFL) system where T_N(x) can be traced down to T=0 over more than a decade of temperature. Our results indicate that the disappearance of the AF state occurs near x_c ~ 0.7, although already at x ~ 0.4 significant modifications of the magnetic ground state are observed. Between these concentrations, clear NFL signatures are observed, such as ρ(T)\approx ρ_0 + A T^n (with n<1.5) and C_P(T)\propto -T ln(T) dependencies. Within the ordered phase a first order phase transition occurs for 0.25 < x < 0.5. With larger Sn doping, different weak ρ(T) dependencies are observed at low temperatures between x=1 and x=3 while C_P/T shows only a weak temperature dependence.

Effect of Hydrostatic Pressure on the Kondo Effect in the Heavy Fermion System Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$

We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the resistivity of the heavy fermion Kondo lattice compound Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ in the temperature range 2-300 K and in pressures upto 10 Kbar. At ambient pressure the resistivity shows a prominent Kondo effect. The Kondo minimum shifts from 22.5 K at ambient pressure to 19.2 K at a pressure of 10 Kbar. The depth of the Kondo minimum also progressively decreases with pressure. These results suggest a possible weakening of the Kondo effect with the application of pressure.

Exotic superconductivity in the coexistent phase of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeCu2(Si0.98Ge0.02)2: A Cu-NQR study under hydrostatic pressure

We report a pressure ($P$) effect on CeCu$_2$(Si$_{0.98}$Ge$_{0.02}$)$_2$ where an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T_N \sim$ 0.75 K coexists with superconductivity below $T_c \sim$ 0.4 K\@. At pressures exceeding $P = 0.19$ GPa, the AFM order is suppressed, which demonstrates that the sudden emergence of AFM order due to the Ge doping is ascribed to the intrinsic lattice expansion. The exotic superconductivity at $P = 0$ GPa is found to evolve into a typical heavy-fermion one with a line-node gap above $P = 0.91$ GPa\@. We highlight that the anomalous enhancement in nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ that follows a $T_1T$ = const. behavior well below $T_c$ at $P$ = 0 GPa is characterized by the persistence of low-lying magnetic excitations, which may be inherent to the coexistent state of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity.

Divergence of the Grueneisen Ratio at Quantum Critical Points in Heavy Fermion Metals

We present low-temperature volume thermal expansion, $β$, and specific heat, $C$, measurements on high-quality single crystals of CeNi2Ge2 and YbRh2(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$ which are located very near to quantum critical points. For both systems, $β$ shows a more singular temperature dependence than $C$, and thus the Grueneisen ratio ${Γ\propto β/C}$ diverges as T --> 0. For CeNi2Ge2, our results are in accordance with the spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional critical spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in YbRh2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$ cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW theory but is qualitatively consistent with a locally quantum critical picture.

The break up of heavy electrons at a quantum critical point

The point at absolute zero where matter becomes unstable to new forms of order is called a quantum critical point (QCP). The quantum fluctuations between order and disorder that develop at this point induce profound transformations in the finite temperature electronic properties of the material. Magnetic fields are ideal for tuning a material as close as possible to a QCP, where the most intense effects of criticality can be studied. A previous study on theheavy-electron material $YbRh_2Si_2$ found that near a field-induced quantum critical point electrons move ever more slowly and scatter off one-another with ever increasing probability, as indicated by a divergence to infinity of the electron effective mass and cross-section. These studies could not shed light on whether these properties were an artifact of the applied field, or a more general feature of field-free QCPs. Here we report that when Germanium-doped $YbRh_2Si_2$ is tuned away from a chemically induced quantum critical point by magnetic fields there is a universal behavior in the temperature dependence of the specific heat and resistivity: the characteristic kinetic energy of electrons is directly proportional to the strength of the applied field. We infer that all ballistic motion of electrons vanishes at a QCP, forming a new class of conductor in which individual electrons decay into collective current carrying motions of the electron fluid.

Tuning Heavy Fermion Systems into Quantum Criticality by Magnetic Field

We discuss a series of thermodynamic, magnetic and electrical transport experiments on the two heavy fermion compounds CeNi2Ge2 and YbRh2Si2 in which magnetic fields, B, are used to tune the systems from a Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) into a field-induced FL state. Upon approaching the quantum-critical points from the FL side by reducing B we analyze the heavy quasiparticle (QP) mass and QP-QP scattering cross sections. For CeNi2Ge2 the observed behavior agrees well with the predictions of the spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional (3D) critical spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in YbRh2Si2 cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW theory for neither 3D nor 2D critical spinfluctuations. Furthermore, we investigate the magnetization M(B) at high magnetic fields. For CeNi2Ge2 a metamagnetic transition is observed at 43 T, whereas for YbRh2Si2 a kink-like anomaly occurs at 10 T in M vs B (applied along the easy basal plane) above which the heavy fermion state is completely suppressed.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in the Kondo lattice system Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$

Compounds belonging to the R$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ series exhibit unusual superconducting and magnetic properties. Although a number of studies have been made on the first reentrant antiferromagnet superconductor Tm$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$, the physical properties of Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ are largely unexplored. In this work, we attempt to provide a comprehensive study of bulk properties such as, resistivity, susceptibility and heat-capacity of a well characterized polycrystalline Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$. Our measurements indicate that Yb$^{3+}$ moments order antiferromagnetically below 1.7 K. Moreover, the system behaves as a Kondo lattice with large Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ$) of 0.5~J/Yb mol K$^{2}$ at 0.3 K, which is well below T$_N$. The absence of superconductivity in Yb$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ down to 0.3 K at ambient pressure is attributed to the presence of the Kondo effect.

Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9: quasi one-dimensional spin-systems with an anomalous low temperature susceptibility

The magnetic behaviour of the low-dimensional Vanadium-oxides Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9 was investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. In both compounds, the results can be very well described by an S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with an intrachain exchange of J = 82 K and J = 94 K in Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9, respectively. In Sr2V3O9, antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 5.3 K indicate a weak interchain exchange of the order of J_perp ~ 2 K. In contrast, no evidence for magnetic order was found in Ba2V3O9 down to 0.5 K, pointing to an even smaller interchain coupling. In both compounds, we observe a pronounced Curie-like increase of the susceptibility below 30 K, which we tentatively attribute to a staggered field effect induced by the applied magnetic field. Results of LDA calculations support the quasi one-dimensional character and indicate that in Sr2V3O9, the magnetic chain is perpendicular to the structural one with the magnetic exchange being transferred through VO4 tetrahedra.

Divergence of the Heavy Quasiparticle Mass at the Antiferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point in YbRh_2Si_2

We report low temperature specific heat, C, magnetization, M, susceptibility, chi, and electrical resistivity, rho, measurements on high-quality single crystals of the heavy-fermion system YbRh_2(Si_{1-x} Ge_x)_2 (x=0 and 0.05). The undoped compound shows weak antiferromagnetic (AF) order at T_N=70 mK which is suppressed to below 10 mK by a tiny volume expansion in the x=0.05 system. In the latter pronounced deviations from Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) behavior occur, e.g. Delta rho ~ T over three decades in T. Both thermodynamic and magnetic properties show a crossover at about 0.3 K: At 0.3 K <= T <= 10 K we observe C/T ~ log(T_0/T) and a "non-Curie" behavior chi^{-1} ~ T^alpha with alpha<1 similar to what was found for the prototypical system CeCu_{5.9} Au_{0.1}. Below 0.3 K, chi turns into a Curie-Weiss dependence chi^{-1} ~ (T-Theta) indicating large unscreened Yb^{3+} moments whereas in C(T)/T a pronounced upturn occurs. In the undoped compound the AF order is suppressed continuously by critical fields B_{c0} ~= 0.06 T and 0.7 T applied perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively. For B>B_{c0} a LFL state with Delta rho = A(B)T^2 and C(T)/T = gamma_0(B) is induced, that fulfills the Kadowaki-Woods scaling A ~ gamma_0^2. Upon reducing the magnetic field to B_{c0} a 1/(B-B_{c0}) dependence of A(B) and gamma_0^2(B) indicates singular scattering at the whole Fermi surface and a divergence of the heavy quasiparticle mass.
