Magnetic properties of Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co) investigated by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy

We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$ = Fe and Co) compounds using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRMS measurements reveal that the GdCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound has a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure with a magnetic propagation vector $\vec{\tau}$ = $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ below the N\'eel temperature ($T_N \sim$ 5.7 K). Only the Gd ions carry a magnetic moment forming an antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic representation $\Gamma_6$. For the ferromagnetic GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound, an extensive investigation was performed at low temperature and under magnetic field using XANES and XMCD techniques. A strong XMCD signal of about 12.5 $\%$ and 9.7 $\%$ is observed below the Curie temperature ($T_C \sim$ 85 K) at the Gd-$L_2$ and $L_3$ edges, respectively. In addition, a small magnetic signal of about 0.06 $\%$ of the jump is recorded at the Zn $K$-edge suggesting that the Zn 4$p$ states are spin polarized by the Gd 5$d$ extended orbitals.

Physical properties and magnetic structure of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound

In this work, we combined magnetization, pressure dependent electrical resistivity, heat-capacity, 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering experiments to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound. Our single crystals show an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ~ 16 K and the magnetic properties indicate that this compound is an Ising antiferromagnet. In particular, the low temperature magnetization data revealed a spin-flop transition at T = 5 K when magnetic fields about 5.5 T are applied along the c-axis. Moreover, the X-ray magnetic diffraction data below TN revealed a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation wavevector (0 0 1/2) with the Ce^3+ moments oriented along the c-axis. Furthermore, our heat capacity, pressure dependent resistivity and temperature dependent 63Cu NMR data suggest that CeCuBi2 exhibits a weak heavy fermion behavior with strongly localized Ce^3+ 4f electrons. We thus discuss a scenario taking into account the anisotropic magnetic interaction between the Ce^3+ ions along with the tetragonal crystalline electric field effects in CeCuBi2.

Pressure induced amorphization and collapse of magnetic order in type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30

We investigate the low temperature structural and electronic properties of the type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 under pressure using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRD measurements reveal a transition to an amorphous phase above 18 GPa. Unlike previous reports on other clathrate compounds, no volume-collapse is observed prior to the crystalline-amorphous phase transition which takes place when the unit cell volume is reduced to 81% of its ambient pressure value. Fits of the pressure-dependent relative volume to a Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) yield a bulk modulus B0 = 65+-3 GPa and a pressure derivative B'0 = 3.3+-0.5. The Eu L2-edge XMCD data shows quenching of the magnetic order at the crystalline-amorphous phase transition. The XANES spectra indicate the persistence of Eu2+ valency state up to 22 GPa, therefore the suppression of XMCD intensity is due to the loss of magnetic order as a result of frustrated exchange interactions in the amorphous phase, and not due to quenching of local moments. When compared with other clathrates, the results point to the importance of guest ion-cage interactions in determining the mechanical stability of the framework structure and the critical pressure for amorphization. Finally, the crystalline structure is not found to recover after pressure release, resulting in a novel amorphous material that is at least metastable at ambient pressure and temperature.

Probing the localized to itinerant behavior of the 4f electron in CeIn3-xSnx by Gd3+ electron spin resonance

The CeIn3-xSnx cubic heavy fermion system presents an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 10 K, for x = 0, that decreases continuously down to 0 K upon Sn substitution at a critical concentration of x_c ~ 0.65. In the vicinity of T_N -> 0 the system shows non-Fermi liquid behavior due to antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations. For a high Sn content, x > 2.2, intermediate valence effects are present. In this work we show that Gd3+-doped electron spin resonance (ESR) probes a change in the character of the Ce 4f electron, as a function of Sn substitution. The Gd3+ ESR results indicate a transition of the Ce 4f spin behavior from localized to itinerant. Near the quantum critical point, on the antiferromagnetic side of the magnetic phase diagram, both localized and itinerant behaviors coexist.

Electron spin resonance study of the LaIn3-xSnx superconducting system

The LaIn3-xSnx alloy system is composed of superconducting Pauli paramagnets. For LaIn3 the superconducting critical temperature T_c is approximately 0.7 K and it shows an oscillatory dependence as a function of Sn substitution, presenting its highest value T_c ~ 6.4 K for the LaSn3 end member. The superconducting state of these materials was characterized as being of the conventional type. We report our results for Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the LaIn3-xSnx compounds as a function of x. We show that the effective exchange interaction parameter J_fs between the Gd3+ 4f local moment and the s-like conduction electrons is almost unchanged by Sn substitution and observe microscopically that LaSn3 is a conventional superconductor.

The magnetic structures of the anisotropic inter-metallic compounds Er$_2$CoGa$_8$ and Tm$_2$CoGa$_8$

Two members of the iso-structural R$_2$CoGa$_8$ inter-metallic series, Er$_2$CoGa$_8$ and Tm$_2$CoGa$_8$, have been studied by powder neutron diffraction. Antiferromagnetic ordering of the rare-earth sublattices was confirmed to occur at 3.0 K and 2.0 K, respectively. Furthermore, determination of the critical exponent showed Er$_2$CoGa$_8$ to adopt a 3D universality class. In spite of a common magnetic easy axis and similar structural characteristics, the antiferromagnetic structures were found to be different for the erbium and thulium based compounds. The corresponding magnetic space groups were determined to be $P_{2a}mmm'$ and $P_Cmmm$. The difference in magnetic structures is discussed based on crystal electric field effects that are known to be prevalent in such materials.

Anharmonic transitions in nearly dry L-cysteine I

Two special dynamical transitions of universal character have been recently observed in macromolecules at $T_{D}\sim 180 - 220$ K and $T^{*}\sim 100$ K. Despite their relevance, a complete understanding of the nature of these transitions and their consequences for the bio-activity of the macromolecule is still lacking. Our results and analysis concerning the temperature dependence of structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of the orthorhombic polymorph of the amino acid L-cysteine (at a hydration level of 3.5%) indicated that the two referred temperatures define the triggering of very simple and specific events that govern all the biochemical interactions of the biomolecule: activation of rigid rotors ($T T_{D}$).

Cd-doping effects in Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) heavy fermion compounds

Low temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that Cd-doping enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature from TN = 2.8 K (x = 0) to TN = 4.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2RhIn8-xCdx and induces long range AFM ordering with TN = 3.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2IrIn8-xCdx. Additionally, X-ray and neutron magnetic scattering studies showed that Cd-doped samples present below TN a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,1/2,0). The resolved magnetic structures for both compounds indicate that the Cd-doping tends to rotate the direction of the ordered magnetic moments toward the ab-plane. This result suggests that the Cd-doping affects the Ce3+ ground state single ion anisotropy modifying the crystalline electrical field (CEF) parameters at the Ce3+ site. Indications of CEF evolution induced by Cd-doping were also found in the electrical resistivity measurements. Comparisons between our results and the general effects of Cd-doping on the related compounds CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh and Ir) confirms the claims that the Cd-doping induced electronic tuning is the main effect favoring AFM ordering in these compounds.

La-dilution effects in TbRhIn5 antiferromagnet

We report measurements of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (XRMS) and heat capacity on single crystals of Tb1-xLaxRhIn5 for nominal concentrations in the range 0.0 < x < 1.0. TbRhIn5 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with TN ~ 46 K, which is the highest TN values along the RRhIn5 series. We explore the suppression of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as a function of La-doping considering the effects of La-induced dilution and perturbations to the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF) on the long range magnetic interaction between the Tb$^{3+}$ ions. Additionally, we also discuss the role of disorder. Our results and analysis are compared to the properties of the undoped compound and of other members of the RRhIn5 family and structurally related compounds (R2RhIn8 and RIn3). The XRMS measurements reveal that the commensurate magnetic structure with the magnetic wave-vector (0,1/2,1/2) observed for the undoped compound is robust against doping perturbations in Tb0.6La0.4RhIn5 compound.

Magnetic structure of Sm2IrIn8

The magnetic structure of the intermetallic antiferromagnet Sm2IrIn8 was determined using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Below TN = 14.2, Sm2IrIn8 has a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,0,0). The Sm magnetic moments lie in the ab plane and are rotated roughly 18 degrees away from the a axis. The magnetic structure of this compound was obtained by measuring the strong dipolar resonant peak whose enhancement was of over two orders of magnitude at the L2 edge. At the L3 edge both quadrupolar and dipolar features were observed in the energy line shape. The magnetic structure and properties of Sm2IrIn8 are found to be consistent with the general trend already seen for the Nd-, Tb- and the Ce-based compounds from the RmMnIn3m+2n family (R = rare earth; M=Rh or Ir, m = 1, 2; n = 0, 1), where the crystalline electrical field (CEF) effects determine the direction of magnetic moments and the TN evolution in the series. The measured Neel temperature for Sm2IrIn8 is slightly suppressed when compared to the TN of the parent cubic compound SmIn3.

Physical properties and magnetic structure of TbRhIn5 intermetallic compound

In this work we report the physical properties of the new intermetallic compound TbRhIn5 investigated by means of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments. TbRhIn5 is an intermetallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 45.5 K, the highest ordering temperature among the existing RRhIn5 (1-1-5, R = rare earth) materials. This result is in contrast to what is expected from a de Gennes scaling along the RRhIn5 series. The X-ray resonant diffraction data below TN reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with a propagation vector (1/2 0 1/2) and the Tb moments oriented along the c-axis. Strong (over two order of magnitude) dipolar enhancements of the magnetic Bragg peaks were observed at both Tb absorption edges LII and LIII, indicating a fairly high polarization of the Tb 5d levels. Using a mean field model including an isotropic first-neighbors exchange interaction J(R-R) and the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF), we were able to fit our experimental data and to explain the direction of the ordered Tb-moments and the enhanced TN of this compound. The evolution of the magnetic properties along the RRhIn5 series and its relation to CEF effects for a given rare-earth is discussed.

Substrate-induced strain effects on Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films

We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport, and magnetization of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films grown on LaAlO_{3}, NdGaO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO_{3}) and tensile (NdGaO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different crystallographic symmetries than the bulk material, and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-- as opposed to tensile-- strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdGaO_{3}, which is the substrate that provides the least amount of nominal and measured, but tensile, strain. This result suggests the importance of the role played by the Mn--O--Mn bond angles in the formation of charge and orbital ordering at low temperatures. Finally, in the film grown on LaAlO_{3}, a connection between the lattice distortion associated with orbital ordering and the onset of antiferromagnetism is reported.
