Diagnosing the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly with Global Antineutrino Flux Data

We have examined the impact of new Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO measurements on global fits of reactor antineutrino flux data to a variety of hypotheses regarding the origin of the reactor antineutrino anomaly. In comparing RENO and Daya Bay measurements of inverse beta decay (IBD) yield versus $^{239}$Pu fission fraction, we find differing levels of precision in measurements of time-integrated yield and yield slope, but similar central values, leading to modestly enhanced isotopic IBD yield measurements in a joint fit of the two datasets. In the absence of sterile neutrino oscillations, global fits to all measurements now provide 3σ preference for incorrect modeling of specific fission isotopes over common mis-modeling of all beta-converted isotopes. If sterile neutrino oscillations are considered, global IBD yield fits provide no substantial preference between oscillation-including and oscillation-excluding hypotheses: hybrid models containing both sterile neutrino oscillations and incorrect $^{235}$U or $^{239}$Pu flux predictions are favored at only 1-2σ with respect to models where $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, and $^{239}$Pu are assumed to be incorrectly predicted.

Model-Independent $\barν_{e}$ Short-Baseline Oscillations from Reactor Spectral Ratios

We consider the ratio of the spectra measured in the DANSS neutrino experiment at 12.7 and 10.7~m from a nuclear reactor. These data give a new model-independent indication in favor of short-baseline $\barν_{e}$ oscillations which reinforce the model-independent indication found in the late 2016 in the NEOS experiment. The combined analysis of the NEOS and DANSS spectral ratios in the framework of 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing favor short-baseline $\barν_{e}$ oscillations with a statistical significance of $3.7σ$. The two mixing parameters $\sin^{2}2\vartheta_{ee}$ and $Δ{m}^{2}_{41}$ are constrained at $2σ$ in a narrow-$Δ{m}^{2}_{41}$ island at $Δ{m}^2_{41} \simeq 1.3 \, \text{eV}^2$, with $ \sin^{2}2\vartheta_{ee} = 0.049 \pm 0.023 $ ($2σ$). We discuss the implications of the model-independent NEOS+DANSS analysis for the reactor and Gallium anomalies. The NEOS+DANSS model-independent determination of short-baseline $\barν_{e}$ oscillations allows us to analyze the reactor rates without assumptions on the values of the main reactor antineutrino fluxes and the data of the Gallium source experiments with free detector efficiencies. The corrections to the reactor neutrino fluxes and the Gallium detector efficiencies are obtained from the fit of the data. In particular, we confirm the indication in favor of the need for a recalculation of the $^{235}\text{U}$ reactor antineutrino flux found in previous studies assuming the absence of neutrino oscillations.

Average CsI neutron density distribution from COHERENT data

Using the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data of the COHERENT experiment, we determine for the first time the average neutron rms radius of $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$. We obtain the practically model-independent value $ R_{n} = 5.5 {}^{+0.9}_{-1.1} \, \text{fm} $ using the symmetrized Fermi and Helm form factors. We also point out that the COHERENT data show a $2.3σ$ evidence of the nuclear structure suppression of the full coherence.

Reactor Fuel Fraction Information on the Antineutrino Anomaly

We analyzed the evolution data of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in terms of short-baseline active-sterile neutrino oscillations taking into account the theoretical uncertainties of the reactor antineutrino fluxes. We found that oscillations are disfavored at $2.6σ$ with respect to a suppression of the $^{235}\text{U}$ reactor antineutrino flux and at $2.5σ$ with respect to variations of the $^{235}\text{U}$ and $^{239}\text{Pu}$ fluxes. On the other hand, the analysis of the rates of the short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments favor active-sterile neutrino oscillations and disfavor the suppression of the $^{235}\text{U}$ flux at $3.1σ$ and variations of the $^{235}\text{U}$ and $^{239}\text{Pu}$ fluxes at $2.8σ$. We also found that both the Daya Bay evolution data and the global rate data are well-fitted with composite hypotheses including variations of the $^{235}\text{U}$ or $^{239}\text{Pu}$ fluxes in addition to active-sterile neutrino oscillations. A combined analysis of the Daya Bay evolution data and the global rate data shows a slight preference for oscillations with respect to variations of the $^{235}\text{U}$ and $^{239}\text{Pu}$ fluxes. However, the best fits of the combined data are given by the composite models, with a preference for the model with an enhancement of the $^{239}\text{Pu}$ flux and relatively large oscillations.

Updated Global 3+1 Analysis of Short-BaseLine Neutrino Oscillations

We present the results of an updated fit of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in the framework of 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing. We first consider $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ disappearance in the light of the Gallium and reactor anomalies. We discuss the implications of the recent measurement of the reactor $\barν_e$ spectrum in the NEOS experiment, which shifts the allowed regions of the parameter space towards smaller values of $|U_{e4}|^2$. The beta-decay constraints allow us to limit the oscillation length between about 2 cm and 7 m at $3σ$ for neutrinos with an energy of 1 MeV. We then consider the global fit of the data in the light of the LSND anomaly, taking into account the constraints from $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ disappearance experiments, including the recent data of the MINOS and IceCube experiments. The combination of the NEOS constraints on $|U_{e4}|^2$ and the MINOS and IceCube constraints on $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ lead to an unacceptable appearance-disappearance tension which becomes tolerable only in a pragmatic fit which neglects the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly. The minimization of the global $χ^2$ in the space of the four mixing parameters $Δ{m}^2_{41}$, $|U_{e4}|^2$, $|U_{\mu4}|^2$, and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$ leads to three allowed regions with narrow $Δ{m}^{2}_{41}$ widths at $ Δm^2_{41} \approx 1.7 $ (best-fit), 1.3 (at $2σ$), 2.4 (at $3σ$) eV$^2$. The restrictions of the allowed regions of the mixing parameters with respect to our previous global fits are mainly due to the NEOS constraints. We present a comparison of the allowed regions of the mixing parameters with the sensitivities of ongoing experiments, which show that it is likely that these experiments will determine in a definitive way if the reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies are due to active-sterile neutrino oscillations or not.

A White Paper on keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos.

Light sterile neutrino sensitivity of 163Ho experiments

We explore the sensitivity of $^{163}$Ho electron capture experiments to neutrino masses in the standard framework of three-neutrino mixing and in the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing with a sterile neutrino which mixes with the three standard active neutrinos, as indicated by the anomalies found in short-baseline neutrino oscillations experiments. We calculate the sensitivity to neutrino masses and mixing for different values of the energy resolution of the detectors, of the unresolved pileup fraction and of the total statistics of events, considering the expected values of these parameters in the two planned stages of the ECHo project (ECHo-1k and ECHo-1M). We show that an extension of the ECHo-1M experiment with the possibility to collect $10^{16}$ events will be competitive with the KATRIN experiment. This statistics will allow to explore part of the 3+1 mixing parameter space indicated by the global analysis of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. In order to cover all the allowed region, a statistics of about $10^{17}$ events will be needed.

Assessing the role of nuclear effects in the interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly

We study the impact of the effect of multinucleon interactions in the reconstruction of the neutrino energy on the fit of the MiniBooNE data in terms of neutrino oscillations. We obtain some improvement of the fit of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess in the framework of two-neutrino oscillations and a shift of the allowed region in the $\sin^2 2\vartheta$--$Δ{m}^2$ plane towards smaller values of $\sin^2 2\vartheta$ and larger values of $Δ{m}^2$. However this effect is not enough to solve the problem of the appearance-disappearance tension in the global fit of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data.

Light sterile neutrinos

The theory and phenomenology of light sterile neutrinos at the eV mass scale is reviewed. The reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies are briefly described and interpreted as indications of the existence of short-baseline oscillations which require the existence of light sterile neutrinos. The global fits of short-baseline oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 schemes are discussed, together with the implications for beta-decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay. The cosmological effects of light sterile neutrinos are briefly reviewed and the implications of existing cosmological data are discussed. The review concludes with a summary of future perspectives.

Appearance-Disappearance Relation in 3+$N_{s}$ Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations

We derive the relation between the amplitudes of short-baseline appearance and disappearance oscillations in 3+$N_{s}$ neutrino mixing schemes which is the origin of the appearance-disappearance tension that is found from the analysis of the existing data in any 3+$N_{s}$ neutrino mixing scheme. We illustrate the power of the relation to reveal the appearance-disappearance tension in the cases of 3+1 and 3+2 mixing using the results of global fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data.

Predictions for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in the 3+1 Sterile Neutrino Scenario

In this proceeding we present predictions of the effective Majorana mass $|m_{ββ}|$ in neutrinoless double-$β$ decay for the standard $3ν$ mixing case and for the 3+1 neutrino mixing case indicated by the short-baseline anomalies. We have taken into account the uncertainties of the neutrino mixing parameters determined by oscillation experiments. We obtained that the predictions for $|m_{ββ}|$ in the cases of $3ν$ and 3+1 mixing are quite different, in agreement with previous discussions in the literature, and that future measurements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and the total mass of the three lightest neutrinos in cosmological experiments may distinguish the $3ν$ and 3+1 cases if the mass ordering is determined by oscillation experiments.

Predictions for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in the 3+1 Sterile Neutrino Scenario

We present accurate predictions of the effective Majorana mass $|m_{ββ}|$ in neutrinoless double-$β$ decay in the standard case of $3ν$ mixing and in the case of 3+1 neutrino mixing indicated by the reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies. We have taken into account the uncertainties of the neutrino mixing parameters determined by oscillation experiments. It is shown that the predictions for $|m_{ββ}|$ in the cases of $3ν$ and 3+1 mixing are quite different, in agreement with previous discussions in the literature, and that future measurements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and of the effective light neutrino mass in $β$ decay or the total mass of the three lightest neutrinos in cosmological experiments may distinguish the $3ν$ and 3+1 cases if the mass ordering is determined by oscillation experiments. We also present a relatively simple method to determine the minimum value of $|m_{ββ}|$ in the general case of $N$-neutrino mixing.

Which is the Quantum Decay Law of Relativistic Particles?

We discuss the relation between the quantum-mechanical survival probability of an unstable system in motion and that of the system at rest. The usual definition of the survival probability which takes into account only the time evolution of an unstable system leads to a relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest which is different from the standard relation based on relativistic time dilation. This approach led other authors to claim non-standard quantum-mechanical effects which are in clear contradiction with Special Relativity. We show that an appropriate relativistic definition of the survival probability which takes into account also the space evolution of an unstable system leads to the standard relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest, in agreement with Special Relativity. We present a rigorous derivation of this result based on a wave packet treatment.

Light Sterile Neutrinos and Inflationary Freedom

We perform a cosmological analysis in which we allow the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations to assume a shape that is different from the usual power-law predicted by the simplest models of cosmological inflation. We parameterize the free primordial power spectrum with a "piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial" (PCHIP). We consider a 3+1 neutrino mixing model with a sterile neutrino having a mass at the eV scale, which can explain the anomalies observed in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that the freedom of the primordial power spectrum allows to reconcile the cosmological data with a fully thermalized sterile neutrino in the early Universe. Moreover, the cosmological analysis gives us some information on the shape of the primordial power spectrum, which presents a feature around the wavenumber $k=0.002\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$.

Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay: a Probe of Physics Beyond the Standard Model

In the Standard Model the total lepton number is conserved. Thus, neutrinoless double-beta decay, in which the total lepton number is violated by two units, is a probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this review we consider the basic mechanism of neutrinoless double-beta decay induced by light Majorana neutrino masses. After a brief summary of the present status of our knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing and an introduction to the seesaw mechanism for the generation of light Majorana neutrino masses, in this review we discuss the theory and phenomenology of neutrinoless double-beta decay. We present the basic elements of the theory of neutrinoless double-beta decay, our view of the present status of the challenging problem of the calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the process and a summary of the experimental results.

Cosmological Invisible Decay of Light Sterile Neutrinos

We introduce a cosmological invisible decay of the sterile neutrino with the eV-scale mass indicated by short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments in order to allow its full thermalization in the early Universe. We show that the fit of the cosmological data is practically as good as the fit obtained with a stable sterile neutrino without mass constraints, which has been recently considered by several authors for the explanation of the observed suppression of small-scale matter density fluctuations and for a solution of the tension between the Planck and BICEP2 measurements of the tensor to scalar ratio of large-scale fluctuations. Moreover, the extra relativistic degree of freedom corresponding to a fully thermalized sterile neutrino is correlated with a larger value of the Hubble constant, which is in agreement with local measurements.

Light Sterile Neutrinos in Cosmology and Short-Baseline Oscillation Experiments

We analyze the most recent cosmological data, including Planck, taking into account the possible existence of a sterile neutrino with a mass at the eV scale indicated by short-baseline neutrino oscillations data in the 3+1 framework. We show that the contribution of local measurements of the Hubble constant induces an increase of the value of the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom above the Standard Model value, giving an indication in favor of the existence of sterile neutrinos and their contribution to dark radiation. Furthermore, the measurements of the local galaxy cluster mass distribution favor the existence of sterile neutrinos with eV-scale masses, in agreement with short-baseline neutrino oscillations data. In this case there is no tension between cosmological and short-baseline neutrino oscillations data, but the contribution of the sterile neutrino to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom is likely to be smaller than one. Considering the Dodelson-Widrow and thermal models for the statistical cosmological distribution of sterile neutrinos, we found that in the Dodelson-Widrow model there is a slightly better compatibility between cosmological and short-baseline neutrino oscillations data and the required suppression of the production of sterile neutrinos in the early Universe is slightly smaller.
